Abstract:Objective To study difference between age and gender in postural tachycardia syndrome(POTS).Methods 66 patients of POTS were diagnosed from 316(male 119 and female 197) ones with syncope and dizziness by head-up tilt table test(HUTT).They were 4 to 70 years old(mean 23.92±16.36 years). The patients were divided into adults group(18 years old) and children group(≤18 years old)according to the age.The course of disease, diagnostic rate, changes of heart rate in POTS and their relationship with age and gender were analysed. Results ①The course and onset age in POTS: The course was 1.00 to 11.33(mean 5.22±4.33)years in adults, which was slightly shorter in male than that in female(3.00±4.24 years vs 5.71±4.44 years,P0.05).In children group, the course was 0.08 to 4.00(mean 0.73±1.13)years and male's was longer than female's(1.21±1.46 years vs 0.46±0.81 years,P0.05).The adults'onset age in POTS was 18 to 49 years old(mean 25.75±8.33 years old),and female was younger than male(P0.05).It was 4 to 16 years old(mean 11.73±2.54 years old)in children group without significant difference in gender(P0.05).②The diagnostic rate and changes of heart rate in POTS: The diagnostic rate in POTS was not different in age but female patients was higher in adults than in children(P0.05).There was no difference in heart rate increment within 10 minutes during HUTT between age groups and gender ones(P0.05).Conclusions There were no differences of age and gender in the course and heart rate increment within 10 minutes during HUTT of POTS.Female patients are more than male ones in adults. There were also no difference of age in the diagnostic rate, but female's was higher in adults than in children. That was of instructive significance to the diagnosis and treatment of POTS in clinic.
