Abstract:Objective To explore the association between air sulfur dioxide(SO2) level and population mortality of respiratory disease in Beijing. Methods After adjustment for the effects of long-term trend, weather conditions and weekdays' effect, generalized additive models was used to explore the relationship between the level of SO2 and the respiratory disease mortality, based on the daily data of air SO2 monitoring and cause-specific population mortality during 1st Jan 2006 to 31st Dec 2009 in Beijing. Results SO2 concentrations in air were significantly associated with daily respiratory disease mortality and daily pneumonia mortality in Beijing. An increase of 10 μg/m3 in SO2 was associated with 0.88%(95%CI: 0.34%-1.41%) of increase in daily respiratory disease mortality and 1.43%(95%CI: 0.51%-2.35%) daily pneumonia mortality, respectively. Conclusion The levels of SO2 in air were positively associated with daily respiratory disease mortality and daily pneumonia mortality in Beijing.
