Compensatory Mechanism in Adult Patients with Skeletal Class III Malocclusion

Abstract:Objective To investigate skeletal and dental compensatory mechanism in adult class Ⅲ malocclusion.Methods 93 adult patients with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion were included in the study.The patients were considered requiring orthognathic surgery.According to the mandibular plane angle,the patients was divided into three groups including high angle group(above 40°,n=27) average angle group(29° to 40°,n=50) and low angle group(less than 29°,n=16).Lateral skull radiographs were taken before treatment and cephalometric analysis was carried out to investigate the skeletal and dental compensatory mechanism.Correlation and multiply regressive analyses were performed.Results For the relationship of dental measurements to sagittal jaw,the highest,relationship,was found between the angles SN/AB and SN/L1(r=0.61,P0.01).The regression analyses show that,as SN/AB changes by 1°,SN/U1 changes by 0.11°,SN/L1 changes by 0.51° and SN/OP changes 0.11° in low angle group,changes separately by 0.14°,0.40°,0.18° in average group and by 0.50°,0.95°,0.19° in high angle group.Conclusion As class Ⅲ skeletal discrepancy becomes worse,the maxillary incisors inclines more labially,the mandibular incisors more lingually,and the occlusal plane continued to flatten.
