Abstract:We establish a Cauchy type inequality for the geometric intersection number between two 1-dimensional submanifolds in a surface. Some of the basic results in Thurston's theory of measured laminations on surfaces are derived from the Cauchy inequality.

Abstract:In this paper a novelty filter is introduced which allows a robot operating in an un structured environment to produce a self-organised model of its surroundings and to detect deviations from the learned model. The environment is perceived using the rob ot's 16 sonar sensors. The algorithm produces a novelty measure for each sensor scan relative to the model it has learned. This means that it highlights stimuli which h ave not been previously experienced. The novelty filter proposed uses a model of hab ituation. Habituation is a decrement in behavioural response when a stimulus is pre sented repeatedly. Robot experiments are presented which demonstrate the reliable o peration of the filter in a number of environments.

Abstract:In this paper, we produce an elementary approach to Thurston's theory of measured laminations on compact surfaces with non-empty boundary. We show that the theory can be derived from a simple inequality for geometric intersection numbers between arcs inside an octagon.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the sharp constants of quantitative Hardy and Rellich inequalities on nonreversible Finsler manifolds equipped with arbitrary measures. In particular, these inequalities can be globally refined by adding remainder terms like the Brezis–Vázquez improvement, if Finsler manifolds are of strictly negative flag curvature, vanishing S-curvature and finite uniformity constant. Furthermore, these results remain valid when Finsler metrics are reversible.

Abstract:We introduce a natural stratification of the space of projective classes of measured laminations on a complete hyperbolic surface of finite area. We prove a rigidity result, namely, the group of self-homeomorphisms of the space of projective measured laminations that preserve such a stratification is in general identified with the extended mapping class group of the corresponding surface. We use this approach to fill a gap in the proof of the rigidity of the action of the extended mapping class group on the unmeasured laminations space.

Abstract:We study functional and geometric inequalities on complete Finsler measure spaces with the weighted Ricci curvature bounded below. We first obtain some local uniform Poincaré inequalities and Sobolev inequalities. Then, we prove a mean value inequality for nonnegative subsolutions of elliptic equations. Further, we derive local and global Harnack inequalities for positive harmonic functions. Finally, we establish a global gradient estimate for positive harmonic functions on forward complete non-compact Finsler measure spaces. Besides, as an application of the mean value inequality, we prove a Liouville type theorem for harmonic functions.

Abstract:Given a compact orientable surface $\Sigma$, let $\Cal S(\Sigma)$ be the set of isotopy classes of essential simple loops on $\Sigma$. We determine a complete set of relations for a function from $\Cal S(\Sigma)$ to $\bold Z$ to be a geometric intersection number function. As a consequence, we obtain explicit equations in $\bold R^{\Cal S(\Sigma)}$ and $P(\bold R^{\Cal S(\Sigma)})$ defining Thurston's space of measured laminations and Thurston's compactification of the Teichm\"uller space. These equations are not only piecewise integral linear but also semi-real algebraic.

Abstract:We prove that a nonvanishing weak limit of Riemannian metrics in surfaces with an integral curvature bound admits only weak cusp singularities. The result is useful toward generalizing classical uniformization theory to surfaces with boundary.

Abstract:The art of analysis involves the subtle combination of approximation, inequalities, and geometric intuition as well as being able to work at different scales. With this subtlety in mind, we present this paper in a manner designed for wide accessibility for both advanced undergraduate students and graduate students. The main results include a singular integral for measuring the level sets of a $C^{1,1}$ function mapping from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}$, that is, one whose derivative is Lipschitz continuous. We extend this to measure embedded submanifolds in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that are merely $C^1$ using the distance function and provide an example showing that the measure does not hold for general rectifiable boundaries.

The Poincaré Problem for a foliated surface

Abstract:Let $\mathcal F$ be a foliation on a smooth projective surface $S$ over the complex number $\mathbb{C}$. We introduce three birational non-negative invariants $c_1^2(\mathcal F)$, $c_2(\mathcal F)$ and $\chi(\mathcal F)$, called the Chern numbers. If the foliation $\mathcal F$ is not of general type, the first Chern number $c_1^2(\mathcal F)=0$, and $c_2(\mathcal F)=\chi(\mathcal F)=0$ except when $\mathcal F$ is induced by a non-isotrivial fibration of genus $g=1$. If $\mathcal F$ is of general type, we obtain a slope inequality when $\mathcal F$ is algebraically integral. As a corollary, $\mathcal F$ is always transcendental if the slope is less than $2$. On the other hand, we also prove three sharp Noether type inequalities if $\mathcal F$ is of general type. As applications, we obtain a criterion for foliations to be transcendental using Noether type inequalities, and we also give a partial positive answer to the question on the lower bound on the volume of a foliation of general type.

The induced metric and bending lamination on the boundary of convex hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:Let $S$ be a closed hyperbolic surface and $M = \left ( 0,1 \right )$. Suppose $h$ is a Riemannian metric on $S$ with curvature strictly greater than $-1$, $h^{*}$ is a Riemannian metric on $S$ with curvature strictly less than $1$, and every contractible closed geodesic with respect to $h^{*}$ has length strictly greater than $2\pi$. Let $L$ be a measured lamination on $S$ such that every closed leaf has weight strictly less than $\pi$. Then, we prove the existence of a convex hyperbolic metric $g$ on the interior of $M$ that induces the Riemannian metric $h$ (respectively $h^{*}$) as the first (respectively third) fundamental form on $S \times \left\{ 0\right\}$ and induces a pleated surface structure on $S \times \left\{ 1\right\}$ with bending lamination $L$. This statement remains valid even in limiting cases where the curvature of $h$ is constant and equal to $-1$. Additionally, when considering a conformal class $c$ on $S$, we show that there exists a convex hyperbolic metric $g$ on the interior of $M$ that induces $c$ on $S \times \left\{ 0\right\}$, which is viewed as one component of the ideal boundary at infinity of $(M,g)$, and induces a pleated surface structure on $S \times \left\{ 0\right\}$ with bending lamination $L$. Our proof differs from previous work by Lecuire for these two last cases. Moreover, when we consider a lamination which is small enough, in a sense that we will define, and a hyperbolic metric, we show that the metric on the interior of M that realizes these data is unique.

Abstract:The combinatorial Mandelbrot set is a continuum in the plane, whose boundary is defined as the quotient space of the unit circle by an explicit equivalence relation. This equivalence relation was described by Douady (1984) and, separately, by Thurston (1985) who used quadratic invariant geolaminations as a major tool. We showed earlier that the combinatorial Mandelbrot set can be interpreted as a quotient of the space of all limit quadratic invariant geolaminations with the Hausdorff distance topology. In this paper, we describe two similar quotients. In the first case, the identifications are the same but the space is smaller than that used for the Mandelbrot set. The resulting quotient space is obtained from the Mandelbrot set by ıpinching" the transitions between adjacent hyperbolic components. In the second case we identify renormalizable geolaminations that can be ırenormalized" to the same hyperbolic geolamination while no two non-renormalizable geolaminations are identified.

An $\infty$-Laplacian for differential forms, and calibrated laminations

Abstract:Motivated by Thurston and Daskalopoulos--Uhlenbeck's approach to Teichmüller theory, we study the behavior of $q$-harmonic functions and their $p$-harmonic conjugates in the limit as $q \to 1$, where $1/p + 1/q = 1$. The $1$-Laplacian is already known to give rise to laminations by minimal hypersurfaces; we show that the limiting $p$-harmonic conjugates converge to calibrations $F$ of the laminations. Moreover, we show that the laminations which are calibrated by $F$ are exactly those which arise from the $1$-Laplacian. We also explore the limiting dual problem as a model problem for the optimal Lipschitz extension problem, which exhibits behavior rather unlike the scalar $\infty$-Laplacian. In a companion work, we will apply the main result of this paper to associate to each class in $H^{d - 1}$ a lamination in a canonical way, and study the duality of the stable norm on $H_{d - 1}$.

Abstract:We obtain sharp quantitative Laplacian upper and lower estimates under no assumption on curvatures. As a result, we derive quantitative Laplacian, area and volume comparison theorems for tubes in Riemannian and Kähler manifolds under weak integral curvature assumptions. We also give some applications, such as a general Bonnet-Myers theorem and Cheng's eigenvalue estimate under weak integral curvature assumptions.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish two families of sharp geometric inequalities for closed hypersurfaces in space forms or other warped product manifolds. Both families of inequalities compare three distinct geometric quantities. The first family concerns the $k$-th boundary momentum, area, and weighted volume, and has applications to Weinstock-type inequalities for Steklov or Wentzell eigenvalues on star-shaped mean convex domains. This generalizes the main results of [12]. The second family involves a weighted $k$-th mean curvature integral and two distinct quermassintegrals and extends the authors' recent work [33] with G. Wheeler and V.-M. Wheeler.

On Teichmüller Spaces of Surfaces with Boundary

Abstract:We characterize hyperbolic metrics on compact triangulated surfaces with boundary using a variational principle. As a consequence, a new parameterization of the Teichmüller space of a compact surface with boundary is produced. In the new parameterization, the Teichmüller space becomes an explicit open convex polytope. Our results can be considered as a generalization of the simplicial coordinate of Penner [P1], [P2] for hyperbolic metrics with cusp ends to the case of surfaces with geodesic boundary. It is conjectured that the Weil-Petersson symplectic form can be expressed explicitly in terms of the new coordinate.
A Poincaré Inequality on Loop Spaces

Abstract:We investigate properties of measures in infinite dimensional spaces in terms of Poincaré inequalities. A Poincaré inequality states that the $L^2$ variance of an admissible function is controlled by the homogeneous $H^1$ norm. In the case of Loop spaces, it was observed by L. Gross that the homogeneous $H^1$ norm alone may not control the $L^2$ norm and a potential term involving the end value of the Brownian bridge is introduced. Aida, on the other hand, introduced a weight on the Dirichlet form. We show that Aida's modified Logarithmic Sobolev inequality implies weak Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities with precise estimates on the order of convergence. The order of convergence in the weak Sobolev inequalities are related to weak $L^1$ estimates on the weight function. This and a relation between Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities lead to a Poincaré inequality on the loop space over certain manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a logarithmic Sobolev inequality in complete Finsler measure spaces. As its applications, we prove the existence of solutions of eigenvalue problem for the Finsler Laplacian. Finally, we obtain a Lichnerowicz type theorem which shows that for a complete Finsler measure space with Ric∞≥K>0, the first eigenvalue has lower bound K2.

Abstract:We present an extension of several results on pairs and varieties to foliated surface pairs. We prove the boundedness of local complements, the local index theorem, and the uniform boundedness of minimal log discrepancies (mlds), as well as establishing the existence of uniform rational lc polytopes. Furthermore, we address two questions posed by P. Cascini and C. Spicer on foliations, providing negative responses. We also demonstrate that the Grauert-Riemenschneider type vanishing theorem generally fails for lc foliations on surfaces. In addition, we determine the set of minimal log discrepancies for foliated surface pairs with specific coefficients, which leads to the recovery of Y.-A. Chen's proof on the ascending chain condition conjecture for mlds for foliated surfaces.
