Abstract:Octane number (ON) is an empirical index to evaluate fuel auto-ignition tendency at end gases in spark-ignited (SI) engines. Traditional methods for ON measurement require substantial expertise and costly experimentation. In this study, a predictive model that combined the active subspace method and the quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) method was developed to evaluate the ONs of hydrocarbons. The database contained measured research octane numbers (RONs) and motor octane numbers (MONs) of 186 hydrocarbons, covering chemical classes of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, naphthenes, and aromatics. Based on 85 topological indices, a one-dimensional active subspace model was established to predict fuel RONs and MONs. The correlation coefficients (R-2) between the predicted and measured values are 0.97 and 0.95 for RONs and MONs, respectively, with the average absolute errors (AAE) being 3.3 and 3.7, respectively. Further, the relative contribution of each descriptor to the output was obtained according to the components of active variable. By neglecting less important descriptors, simplified models that excluded 10 descriptors were established. Based on this simplified model, the R-2 between the predicted results and experimental data are 0.95 and 0.93 for RONs and MONs, respectively, and the AAE are 4.1 and 4.5, respectively. This work demonstrates that the prediction models established by the active subspace method are able to reduce calculation cost to a certain extent, while does not significantly increase the prediction error.
