Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the rigorous theory of nonlinear geometric optics for a contact discontinuity and a shock wave to the Euler system for one-dimensional gas dynamics. For the problem of a contact discontinuity and a shock wave perturbed by a small amplitude, high frequency oscillatory wave train, under suitable stability assumptions, we obtain that the perturbed problem has still a shock wave and a contact discontinuity, and we give their asymptotic expansions.

Abstract:This note is devoted to the rigorous theory of nonlinear geometric optics for multiple shocks to a general N x N conservation law in one space variable. For the problem of multiple weak shocks perturbed by small amplitude, high frequency oscillatory waves, we obtain that the leading profiles of oscillatory shocks are solutions to an integro-differential system with free boundaries, the leading terms of shock fronts don't oscillate, and oscillations only appear in the leading terms of shock speeds.

Abstract:In this paper, the stability of supersonic contact discontinuities in the three-dimensional compressible isentropic steady Euler flows is investigated by using the nonlinear geometric optics. We construct the asymptotic expansions of highly oscillatory contact discontinuities when a planar contact discontinuity is perturbed by a small amplitude high frequency oscillatory incident wave, and deduce there exists a large amplification of amplitudes in the reflected and refracted oscillatory waves when the high frequency oscillatory wave strikes the contact discontinuity front at three critical angles. Moreover, we obtain that the leading profiles of highly oscillatory waves are described by an initial boundary value problem of Burgers-transport equations, and the leading profile of contact discontinuity front satisfies an initial value problem of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation, respectively. The amplification phenomenon shows that this supersonic contact discontinuity is only weakly stable in the sense of Wang and Yu [“Stability of contact discontinuities in three-dimensional compressible steady flows,” J. Differ. Equ. 255, 1278–1356 (2013)].

Abstract:Dispersive shock waves in thermal optical media are nonlinear phenomena whose intrinsic irreversibility is described by time asymmetric quantum mechanics. Recent studies demonstrated that the nonlocal wave breaking evolves in an exponentially decaying dynamics ruled by the reversed harmonic oscillator, namely, the simplest irreversible quantum system in the rigged Hilbert spaces. The generalization of this theory to more complex scenarios is still an open question. In this work, we use a thermal third-order medium with an unprecedented giant Kerr coefficient, the m-cresol/nylon mixed solution, to access an extremely nonlinear, highly nonlocal regime and realize anisotropic shock waves with internal gaps. We compare our experimental observations to results obtained under similar conditions but in hemoglobin solutions from human red blood cells, and found that the gap formation strongly depends on the nonlinearity strength. We prove that a superposition of Gamow vectors in an ad hoc rigged Hilbert space, that is, a tensorial product between the reversed and the standard harmonic oscillators spaces, describes the beam propagation beyond the shock point. The anisotropy turns out from the interaction of trapping and antitrapping potentials. Our work furnishes the description of novel intriguing shock phenomena mediated by extreme nonlinearities.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of nonlinear geometric optics in Colombeau algebras of generalized functions in the case of Cauchy problems for semilinear hyperbolic systems in one space variable. Extending classical results, we establish a generalized variant of nonlinear geometric optics. As an application, a nonlinear superposition principle is obtained when distributional initial data are perturbed by rapid oscillations.

Abstract:The non-linear non-equilibrium nature of shock waves in gas dynamics is investigated for the planar case. Along each streamline, the Euler equations with non-equilibrium pressure are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations defining a slow–fast system, and geometric singular perturbation theory is applied. The proposed theory shows that an orbit on the slow manifold corresponds to the smooth part of the solution to the Euler equation, where non-equilibrium effects are negligible; and a relaxation motion from the unsteady to the steady branch of the slow manifold corresponds to a shock wave, where the flow relaxes from non-equilibrium to equilibrium. Recognizing the shock wave as a fast motion is found to be especially useful for shock wave detection when post-processing experimental measured or numerical calculated flow fields. Various existing shock detection methods can be derived from the proposed theory in a rigorous mathematical manner. The proposed theory provides a new shock detection method based on its non-linear non-equilibrium nature, and may also serve as the theoretical foundation for many popular shock wave detection techniques.

Abstract:In the first half of the paper we consider interaction between the small amplitude travelling waves ("sound") and the shock waves in the transmission line containing both nonlinear capacitors and nonlinear inductors. We calculate the "sound" wave coefficient of reflection from (coefficient of transmission through) the shock wave. These coefficients are expressed in terms of the speeds of the "sound" waves relative to the shock and the wave impedances. In the second half of the paper we explicitly include into consideration the dissipation in the system, introducing ohmic resistors shunting the inductors and also in series with the capacitors. This allows us to justify the conditions on the shocks, postulated in the first half of the paper. This also allows us to describe the shocks as physical objects of finite width and study their profiles. In some particular cases the profiles were obtained in terms of elementary functions.

Abstract:We experimentally study dispersive shock waves in nonlinear waveguide arrays. In contrast with gap solitons, the nonlinearity here pushes the propagation constant further into the transmission bands, facilitating Bloch mode coupling and energy transport. We directly observe this coupling, both within and between bands, by recording intensity in position space and power spectra in momentum space.

Abstract:We address shock waves generated upon the interaction of tilted plane waves with negative refractive index defect in defocusing media with linear gain and two-photon absorption. We found that in contrast to conservative media where one-dimensional dispersive shock waves usually exist only as nonstationary objects expanding away from defect or generating beam, the competition between gain and two-photon absorption in dissipative medium results in the formation of localized stationary dispersive shock waves, whose transverse extent may considerably exceed that of the refractive index defect. One-dimensional dispersive shock waves are stable if the defect strength does not exceed certain critical value.

Abstract:We present a new approach to analyze the validation of weakly nonlinear geometric optics for entropy solutions of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws whose eigenvalues are allowed to have constant multiplicity and corresponding characteristic fields to be linearly degenerate. The approach is based on our careful construction of more accurate auxiliary approximation to weakly nonlinear geometric optics, the properties of wave front-tracking approximate solutions, the behavior of solutions to the approximate asymptotic equations, and the standard semigroup estimates. To illustrate this approach more clearly, we focus first on the Cauchy problem for the hyperbolic systems with compact support initial data of small bounded variation and establish that the L-1-estimate between the entropy solution and the geometric optics expansion function is bounded by O(E-2), independent of the time variable. This implies that the simpler geometric optics expansion functions can be employed to study the behavior of general entropy solutions to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. Finally, we extend the results to the case with non-compact support initial data of bounded variation.

Abstract:We study generation of two-dimensional dispersive shock waves and oblique dark solitons upon interaction of tilted plane waves with negative refractive index defects embedded into defocusing material with linear gain and two-photon absorption. Different evolution regimes are encountered including the formation of well-localized disturbances for input tilts below critical one, and generation of extended shock waves containing multiple intensity oscillations in the "upstream" region and gradually vanishing oblique dark solitons in "downstream" region for input tilts exceeding critical one. The generation of stable dispersive shock waves is possible only below certain critical defect strength.

Abstract:In this companion paper to our study of amplification of wavetrains J.-F. Coulombel, O. Guès and M. Williams, Semilinear geometric optics with boundary amplification, Anal. PDE7(3) (2014) 551–625, we study weakly stable semilinear hyperbolic boundary value problems with pulse data. Here weak stability means that exponentially growing modes are absent, but the so-called uniform Lopatinskii condition fails at some boundary frequency in the hyperbolic region. As a consequence of this degeneracy there is again an amplification phenomenon: outgoing pulses of amplitude O(ε 2 ) and wavelength ε give rise to reflected pulses of amplitude O(ε), so the overall solution has amplitude O(ε). Moreover, the reflecting pulses emanate from a radiating pulse that propagates in the boundary along a characteristic of the Lopatinskii determinant. In the case of N × N systems considered here, a single outgoing pulse produces on reflection a family of incoming pulses traveling at different group velocities. Unlike wavetrains, pulses do not interact to produce resonances that affect the leading order profiles. However, pulse interactions do affect lower-order profiles and so these interactions have to be estimated carefully in the error analysis. Whereas the error analysis in the wavetrain case dealt with small divisor problems by approximating periodic profiles by trigonometric polynomials (which amounts to using a high frequency cutoff), in the pulse case we approximate decaying profiles with nonzero moments by profiles with zero moments (a low frequency cutoff). Unlike the wavetrain case, we are now able to obtain a rate of convergence in the limit describing convergence of approximate to exact solutions.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of shock formation of the 3-dimensional quasilinear wave equation-(1 + 3G ''(0)(partial derivative(t)phi)(2))partial derivative(2)(t)phi + Delta phi = 0,where is a non-zero constant. We will exhibit a family of smooth initial data and show that the foliation of the incoming characteristic hypersurfaces collapses. Similar to 1-dimensional conservational laws, we refer this specific type breakdown of smooth solutions as shock formation. Since satisfies the classical null condition, it admits global smooth solutions for small data. Therefore, we will work with large data (in energy norm). Moreover, no symmetry condition is imposed on the initial datum. We emphasize the geometric perspectives of shock formation in the proof. More specifically, the key idea is to study the interplay between the following two objects: (1) the energy estimates of the linearized equations of ; (2) the differential geometry of the Lorentzian metric . Indeed, the study of the characteristic hypersurfaces (implies shock formation) is the study of the null hypersurfaces of g. The techniques in the proof are inspired by the work (Christodoulou in The Formation of Shocks in 3-Dimensional Fluids. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2007) in which the formation of shocks for 3-dimensional relativistic compressible Euler equations with small initial data is established. We also use the short pulse method which is introduced in the study of formation of black holes in general relativity in Christodoulou (The Formation of Black Holes in General Relativity. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2009) and generalized in Klainerman and Rodnianski (Acta Math 208(2):211-333, 2012).

We study the nondiffusive Westervelt equation in the weakly nonlinear regime and show that the leading profile equation is of Burgers' type. We show that a compactly supported nonlinearity coefficient [math] can be reconstructed from the tilt of the transmitted high frequency wave packets sent from different directions, by demonstrating that those tilts are proportional to the X-ray transform of [math].
