Abstract:The examination of forged and altered document is an important part in judicial expertise. The traditional examination methods need professional testers and devices, the disadvantages include high cost, long testing time, damage on the documents, etc. In recent years, the digital passive lossless forensics on forged and altered document has been developed which only uses scanner and computer. In this paper, we first introduce the life-cycle of document and its forging and altering methods. Then, we summarize the passive lossless forensics on forged and altered document, and describe the technologies on device identiifcation, copy paper identiifcation and authenticity detection, respectively. We give a detailed description on the characteristics introduced by devices and altering methods, and their forensics methods. Finally, we describe the questions and challenges on digital passive lossless forensics on documents.

Abstract:Tampering related to document forgeries is often accomplished by copy-pasting or add-printing. These tampering methods introduce character distortion mutation in documents. We present a method of exposing document forgeries using distortion mutation of geometric parameters. We estimate distortion parameters, which consist of translation and rotation distortions, through image matching for each character. Detection of tampered characters with distortion mutation occurs based on a distortion probability, which is calculated from character distortion parameters. The introduction of a visualized probability map describes the degree of distortion mutation for a full page. The proposed method exposes the forgeries based on individual characters and applies to English and Chinese document examinations. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on low JPEG compression quality and low resolution. (C) 2015 SPIE and IS&T

Abstract:This paper describes a method to distinguish documents produced by laser printers, inkjet printers, and electrostatic copiers, three commonly used document creation devices. The proposed approach can distinguish between documents produced by these sources based on features extracted from the characters in the documents. Hence, it can also be used to detect tampered documents produced by a mixture of these sources. We analyze the characteristics associated with laser/inkjet printers and electrostatic copiers and determine the signatures created by the different physical and technical processes involved in each type of printing. Based on the analysis of these signatures, we computed the features of noise energy, contour roughness, and average gradient. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to distinguish documents produced by laser printer, inkjet printer, and copier based on features extracted from individual characters in the documents. Experimental results show that this method has an average accuracy of 90% and works with JPEG compression.

Abstract:In order to authenticate the image integrality,a new and effective fragile watermarking algorithm is proposed based on the analysis of previous watermarking algorithm.Watermark in this algorithm is generated by using DCT coefficients via a look-up table.By using this algorithm,invisibility feature of watermark and anti-attack ability of the marked image are both greatly improved.Moreover,the proposed algorithm can not only be easily embedded into JPEG,but is very suitable for the hardware implementation.

Abstract:In this paper, puts forward a kind of video forensic method based on the source of authenticity and integrity using hash computation and multiple digital watermarking. The research including two parts, the first is the design of hash algorithm and multiple digital watermarking methods, the second is video sources of authenticity and integrity of judgment. Using hash value consistency to ensure the authenticity of the video data, using multiple digital watermarking methods to verify the integrity of the video file is an effective method for video forensics.
A Watermarking Algorithm for Image Content Authentication in Double-Compression Environment

Abstract:Malicious tampering of digital image content may lead to serious consequences. As image resolution increases and its circulations on the network grows rapidly, images undergo double compression in the following environment: compression (JPEG/JPEG2000) for first release, decoding, application processing (conventional signal processing/security attacks/malicious content tampering), and compression (JPEG2000/JPEG) for rerelease before detection. Effectively determining whether the image content has been tampered and to locate the tampering position in a double-compression environment is an urgent problem. In this paper, a novel watermark expression method based on rotating vector and its modulation algorithm is proposed. Based on this method, a semi-fragile watermarking scheme is established for the image content authentication. The stability of watermarked data is analyzed theoretically, providing the watermark scheme with a theoretical basis. The authentication schemes with feature extraction and reconstruction, watermark embedding and extraction, and tamper detection and localization are mainly elaborated. The robustness of watermark, its security, and related detection performance are analyzed. Theoretical analysis and experiments show that the scheme features a good watermark transparency, good robustness, and stable distribution for different attacks and can effectively distinguish malicious tampering from content-preserving operators and locate tampering area under double-compression environment. In addition, the proposed scheme can resist watermark attacks, collage attacks, and forge attacks. Compared with related schemes, the proposed scheme has superior comprehensive performance and is suitable for content authentication in double-compression environment, which expands the application scope of watermark-based content authentication.

Abstract:In the ultrasonic auto inspection of complex form aircraft forging component,scanning program is hard to automatically recognize defect by the A-wave of each scanning point because of concavo-convex surface and variation thickness of the forging piece.To solve this problem,a thicknessgray ultrasonic imaging method based on thickness variation of workpiece was presented,and template matching method was adopted to improve the defect recognizing ability.Test results demonstrate these methods can improve test efficiency and defect recognizing ability.

Analysis and Extraction of Structural Features of Alphabetic and Digital Characters on Vehicle License Plate

Abstract:In this paper the structural properties of alphabetic and digital characters on vehicle license plate are analyzed in detail and three types of feature are extracted for their recognition. These features include (a) global ones, i.e. closed curve in character, which can be used for character coarse classification; (b) minutiae, which are some key points in thinned image such as endings, bifurcations and crossings of strokes and can be used for character precise classification, (c) corners in strokes which can be used to discriminate similar characters. Algorithms for fast detection of closed curve based on theory of graph and minutiae and for corner finding based on external contour lines of binary image are also discussed. The recognition rate of alphabetic and digit character of the system based on these structural features is approximate to 96% and the time for feature extraction and character recognition is about 20ms/character. This shows that the proposed structural features have good discriminating power of similar characters and can be used for the fast classification and recognition of characters on vehicle license plate.
Blurring and lens distortion free scanning for large area painting and calligraphy

Abstract:Typically, there are two ways (photographing based and linear CCD scanning based) to acquire ancient paintings and calligraphy. These two kinds of solutions are compared in terms of cost, fidelity, flexibility and maintenance. The first solution is more promising. But blurring and lens distortion, which can be eliminated by proposed algorithm, are the main disadvantages when compared with the linear CCD scanning based acquisition. This paper will introduce the selection of optimal aperture and lens distortion correction. For the former, the theory of depth of field and diffraction is employed to model the blur blurring effect under different apertures. For the latter, Plumb Bob model is used to correct the lens distortion. This paper will also show the scanning experiment including high precision criteria, workflow of scanning and results. © 2009 Binary Information Press.

Abstract:In this paper,a Registration method of two seal imprints is proposed for Chinese seal identification.The seal imprint is divided into rings and the intrinsic features are extracted.Therefore,the cyclic shift of one-dimensional ring projecting vectors is adopted instead of rotatation of two-dimentional images.Then the Multiscale Wavelet analysis is processed.The registration result of high precision obtained by the experiment shows that the proposed approach is of adaptability and reliability.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel seal imprint verification method with difference image based statistical feature extraction and symbolic representation based classification. After several image processing procedures including seal imprint extraction and seal registration with the model seal imprint, the statistical feature was extracted from difference images for the pattern classification system of seal verification. Symbolic representation method which requires only genuine samples in the learning phase was used to classify genuine and fake seal imprints. We built up a seal imprint image database for training the seal verification algorithms and testing the proposed verification system. Experiments showed that the symbolic representation method was superior to traditional SVM classifier in this task. Experiments also showed that our statistical feature was very powerful for seal verification application.

Seal Image Registration Based on Shape and Layout Characteristics

Abstract:A novel seal registration method for Chinese seal verification is proposed in this paper using shape and layout characteristics. Seal registration is the process that aligns the sample seal imprint with the model seal imprint geometrically. The proposed method firstly classifies the seal imprints into one of the three shapes (rectangle, ellipse and circle) which are most common in China. Rotation angle of rectangular or elliptical seal imprint is estimated simultaneously with the shape classification procedure. Secondly, layout analysis and character distribution characteristics are used to estimate the rotation angle if the input is considered as a circular seal imprint. Finally, the input seal imprint image is rotated to horizontal direction and the best alignment between the sample seal image and the model seal image is made by translation transform. Experiments show that this proposed method performs very well in seal image registration. And the speed is much faster than the correlation-like methods proposed by other researchers.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method to segment seals and evaluate their quality. Seals with inferior qualities are not suitable for verification. To enhance the robustness of seal system, we put forward a strategy to assess the quality of extracted seal images. First we propose a method to segment seals and get the characters. Then by human assessment, we assign different characters with proper scores as ground-truth. We utilize a series of features and the SVR regression to predict the quality. Finally we use Optical Character Recognition rates to test the effectiveness. Experimental results prove that our proposed method is very effective.

Abstract:<p>Determining the sequence of intersection lines is a challenge in forensic document examination. To explore more advanced technology and meet the needs of practical applications, this study proposes a method based on the characteristics of the molten state to examine crossing‐line sequences. This state can be considered as a melting state of solid laser toner through a dissolution process. Experimental results demonstrate that the molten state is always visible at intersections when a particular ink is stamped after laser printing; however, the presence of the molten state when the seal is stamped before laser printing largely depends on the time interval between printing and stamping. The degree of error obtained through blind tests indicates that this approach has its limitations; however, a high accuracy, which refers to the ability of an examiner, was achieved with respect to determining the sequence of strokes when using a fluorescence method in conjunction with this method. This further indicated the limitation of a single method and the importance of combining multiple methods for document examinations.</p>

A New Method on the Segmentation and Recognition of Chinese Characters for Automatic Chinese Seal Imprint Retrieval.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method on the segmentation and recognition of Chinese characters in both circular and elliptical seals for automatic Chinese seal imprint retrieval. The seal identification system compares an input seal image with its model seal. However, the model seal is usually found manually, which costs quite a lot of time and this manual stage has become the bottleneck of automatic seal identification. In addition, traditional automatic methods which were designed for circular seal imprint retrieval cannot work well for elliptical seal images. In order to overcome these shortcomings, our method first fits the contour of seal images and then automatically classifies them into either circular seal shape or elliptical seal shape. After that, we apply different methods for Chinese character segmentation and skew correction with circular and elliptical seal shape images respectively. Finally, we use our classifier combination strategy to recognize the Chinese characters on Chinese seal images. Once optical character recognition (OCR) is done, a model seal imprint corresponding to its input sample seal image is retrieved for verification from the seal imprint database. Experimental results show that our method has better performance than traditional ones.
Determination of Crossing Sequences Between Laser Printed Text and Seal Impression by Ultraviolet Fluorescence

Abstract:Objective This paper aims to demonstrate a new, non-destructive, quick and reliable way for determining crossing sequence of laser printed text and stamped seal impression using ultraviolet fluorescence. Methods A Video Spectral Comparator(VSC5000) was applied. 72 document samples, prepared with 6 brands of laser printer and 3 types of inkpad, were examined under ultraviolet light with adjustment of parameters including color filter, contrast, brightness and others. Then fluorescence reflection on overlapping region of seal impression and printed text was observed. Results There was great difference at two crossing sequences, that is, printed text over seal impression and seal impression over printed text. In the crossing region of seal impression over printed text, the text was darker and wider, but the strokes maintained continuous and complete. In the crossing region of printed text over seal impression, the text kept the same color and width with those separated from the stamp impression, but some of them were interrupted or incomplete. Conclusions The ultraviolet fluorescence method is a very effective and attractive technique for determining the sequence of laser printed text and stamped seal impression. Some challenging samples such as year-long documents, unclear stamps, and those not covered yet here, can be detected in further study.

Abstract:Sealing wax is used for maintaining the integrity and authenticity of a document or physical evidence. Any tampering with the seal calls into question the overall integrity and authenticity of the tangible evidence or document. In these circumstances, determining the authenticity of the sealing material (physical and chemical) becomes imperative. In this study, ATR‐FTIR spectroscopy supported by chemometrics has been used to differentiate sealing wax samples belonging to 12 different brands available across India. All the samples were first melted, cooled, and then analyzed using ATR‐FTIR spectroscopy in the mid‐infrared region (4000–600 cm−1). The obtained spectra were first examined visually for the presence of different functional groups. Principal component analysis (PCA) and principal component analysis‐linear discriminant analysis (PCA‐LDA) were employed to analyze the sample clustering patterns and to categorize them into their respective groups, respectively. For classification, a PCA‐LDA training model was applied, and it demonstrated 95.83% accuracy. The validation test resulted in an accuracy of 83.33%. PCA‐LDA model offered 100% accurate prediction for samples on various substrates, including cloth, cardboard, and paper. A blind study was also performed using five unknown samples, which were accurately classified into their respective groups. PCA‐LDA model will be helpful in providing investigative leads by linking a questioned sealing wax sample with its respective group.
