Abstract:The direct-lit LED backlight is a key component in large-area LCD displays. The existing methods which rely on point source assumption and irradiance feedback are less effective in compact designs in near field, and designing thin and high-quality back-lit LED backlights still remains a challenging issue. In this paper, we develop a direct method for designing thin and high-quality back-lit LED backlight systems. The étendue of LED light sources is considered in the numerical calculation of the lens profiles without cumbersome Monte Carlo ray tracing, which allows us to obtain compact LED lighting modules and achieve accurate control of the near-field irradiance distribution of the backlight system. Two examples are presented to demonstrate the elegance of this method in designing thin and high-quality back-lit LED backlights.

Abstract:In the backlight design, a major goal and challenge is to ensure that light efficiency has been enhanced in the direction that is perpendicular to the propagation direction of light. In the backlight module, this process is achieved through the light guide plates. The key of the design is to find a reasonable distribution of nodes to obtain uniform brightness distribution. Optical software can automatically optimize and simplify this design process.

Abstract:The unceasing flat light source is used in the conventional Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) as the backlight, the dynamic contrast ratio of LCD is limited due to light leakage. The implementation of High Dynamic Range (HDR) LCD is introduced based on LED backlight with area control technology, which can not only acquire high contrast ratio and large color gamut but also save power efficiently. According to practical algorithm flow, there are three important aspects described individually: driving value of LED, distribution of backlight and compensation of LCD panel. The development of display device is summarized based on LED backlight.

Abstract:Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have become main stream in the flat panel display industry [1]. Currently, most LCDs have a continuous white backlight and use red, green, and blue color filters forming three sub-pixels to make a pixel. With such a widely used approach, two-thirds of the light is absorbed in the color filters. See Fig. 1(a). Several approaches are proposed and some of them efficiently save the power consumption, like the local dimming technology [2] and the field sequential color displays [3]. Both of these technologies required the change of the backlight. The application of local dimming LCD requires a locally controllable backlight unit; Field sequential color LCD requires a temporally controllable backlight unit. The combination of these two technologies improves the light efficiency 3 times higher than normal and reduces the power consumption to less than one-third. So a kind of spatially and temporally controllable backlight unit is on demand for the future LCDs. Fig. 1(b) shows an example of such backlight unit based on LED matrix [3]. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Direct dynamic backlights have significant advantages over static backlights for liquid crystal display (LCD). This study introduced a structure of direct dynamic backlights based on LEDs,in which the light emission of every LED was restricted to a smaller area on the diffuser film and every LED was only responsible to illuminate one part of LCD. Based on this structure,a 240 mm×180 mm backlight model was analyzed theoretically. The simulation results showed that the uniformity of luminance can reach as high as 93.1%,and ΔU′V′ can decrease to 0.003 545,which completely satisfies the requests of backlight's applications.

Abstract:Currently,more and more liquid crystal displays are towards to the low-power,which the effective method is reducing the number of LEDs as the light source.However,as the decrease of LED pixel,hot spot will increase fast.To solve above problem,without changing the distance between LED and guide plate,and with increasing the distance between LED and LED as well as incident angles of guide light plate,light in guide light plat is completely mixed by using this method,and light uniformity is much more improved.Hot spot in the LED backlight module are also solved.This research has good significance for LCD display.

Abstract:As a high quality and efficient lighting source,the extensive application of LED light will provide environmental protection lighting environment that has higher efficience and energy saving and good lighting quality for modern society.Because of complete differents of luminous principle,structure mode and the characteristics of usages of both LED light and incandescent light,we need to study and discuss the alternative application.To begin the structure of the incandescent lamp,the characteristics of LED light and with the specific application,this article mainly analyses the construction of light distribution,the structure mode of heat dissipation and the characteristics of the drive power supply,and also puts forward some existing problems.At the same time,the article points out the requirements of the application environment and the choice of the alternative application.These will have more positive significance to obtain more extensive application of LED light in future.

Abstract:For current light source of projector - UHP lamp, the disadvantages of short lifetime, high colour temperature, having harmful light, high heat density etc., restrict the application of projector in home entertainment. Recent development of LED provides the possibility of LED being a substitute light source of UHP lamp. A LED-based lighting unit composed of a LED, a collimating lens, a front fly-lens and a back fly-lens is brought forward. Several such lighting units make a basic lighting system of projector. The divergence angle of light beam from LED is compressed by collimator lens. Then the light beam is divided into several tiny light beams by the front fly-lens, and each tiny light beam will be converged to micro-display panel by converging lens. So, the light energy is gathered and the light field is redistributed. The requirements of projector on light flux and homogeneity could be met. The back fly-lens is used to match with following optical elements. As an application of the lighting unit, a signal panel liquid crystal on silicon projector is analyzed.

Abstract:In recent years,LED market has been promoted and rapidly improved by emergence of new application areas.The optical design used in different stages of LED product fabricating is important.This paper introduced the first optical design in isolated and integrated package of LEDs,the process of the secondary optical design as well as the methods including reflection mode,refraction mode,and the mixed mode of reflection and refraction,and briefly described the follow-up optical design.Finally,some prospects were proposed for optical designs in different stages.

Abstract:Illumination is essential for modern life as colorful world is perceived by human visionary system. Display technology has been developing rapidly in recent decades, and the basic principle is related to the way that the image is illuminated and light is emanated. Traditional illumination is provided by different types of light sources, and the display image is visible in large viewing space until the emanating light decays to zero. This work proposes and demonstrates a novel illumination scheme for a display in which the displaying images are visible only in specific spatial regions. The directional backlight ensures the image propagating to specific direction while imaging visibility can be controlled to terminate abruptly at certain distance from the display screen while exerting no influence to nearby regions. The working principle for such an illumination scheme is the use of the modulated coherent directional backlight through an axicon lens. It is shown that the illumination scheme can robustly deliver carried image information to the designated viewing region. This new illumination scheme has many advantages over conventional illumination, including its usage for personal display, very lower energy consumption, as well as minimizing light hazard pollution.

Abstract:As a new_fashioned solid state lighting source,LED has many unique advantages such as nearly no pollution of the product and in the production process;resistance to vibration;easily dimmering from 0 to 100%;operating under safe extra low voltage;continuously operating under the condition of switch_off;having a fixed direction of the light output etc.In recent years,LED's obvious improvement of luminous efficacy and photometric characteristic let it be applied for commercial purpose.But for the influence of our country's plan_economics industry arrangement and for the lack of the popularization of LED professional knowledge and comprehensive knowledge of lighting equipments in the professional personnel,LED is not appropriately applied in practical design and application according to its characteristics and there appear many unreasonable and unqualified application products.This passage analyzes the problems occurring in LED's application in the luminaries for road and street lighting and also put forward some ideas and examples for solving the problems,as reference to professional colleagues.

Abstract:A new structure of side-emitting LED was designed. Using internal total reflection,parabolic reflector and conical reflector,the original light of LED could be guided to the sides of the structure. And peak value of the intensity distribution can be controlled by changing the apex cone angle of the conical reflector. Furthermore,the designed side-emitting LED was used in the direct-lighting backlight whose length×width is 228 mm×150 mm. When thickness of light box changes from 20 mm to 30 mm,the brightness uniformity is all over 85%. By using lightguide with conical dots,when side-emitting rays pass through the bottom of the lightguide,the rays will experience refraction and total internal reflection. So the side-emitting rays are guided to the front of the backlight,and the luminance of the front is enhanced.

Abstract:Miniaturized-light-emitting diode (mini-LED) backlights have emerged as the state-of-the-art technology for liquid crystal display (LCD), facilitating the improvement in a high dynamic range (HDR) and power saving. The local dimming technology divides the backlight into several dimming zones. Employing mini-LEDs, whose size ranges from 100 to 200 μm, as the light sources can enlarge the number of zones in the local dimming backlight, fulfilling the requirement for HDR. However, the halo effect still acts as one of the primary technological bottlenecks for mini-LED backlights. In this review, packaging technology of LEDs, color conversion, and the driving scheme of mini-LED backlights have been discussed. The strategies to reduce optical crosstalk in adjacent areas by various improved optical structures or to suppress the halo effect of LCDs by mini-LED backlights are summarized. The development trends of mini-LED backlights are also discussed.

Abstract:In light-emitting diode (LED) applications, it is becoming a big issue that how to optimize light intensity distribution curve (LIDC) and design corresponding optical component to achieve uniform illumination when distance-height ratio (DHR) is given. A new reversing design method is proposed to solve this problem, including design and optimization of LIDC to achieve high uniform illumination and a new algorithm of freeform lens to generate the required LIDC by LED light source. According to this method, two new LED modules integrated with freeform lenses are successfully designed for slim direct-lit LED backlighting with thickness of 10mm, and uniformities of illuminance increase from 0.446 to 0.915 and from 0.155 to 0.887 when DHRs are 2 and 3 respectively. Moreover, the number of new LED modules dramatically decreases to 1/9 of the traditional LED modules while achieving similar uniform illumination in backlighting. Therefore, this new method provides a practical and simple way for optical design of LED uniform illumination when DHR is much larger than 1. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America
