Abstract:We analyze the spectral and dynamical stability of solitary wave solutions to the Lugiato–Lefever equation on . Our interest lies in solutions that arise through bifurcations from the phase-shifted bright soliton of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. These solutions are highly nonlinear, localized, far-from-equilibrium waves, and are the physical relevant solutions to model Kerr frequency combs. We show that bifurcating solitary waves are spectrally stable when the phase angle satisfies , while unstable waves are found for angles . Furthermore, we establish asymptotic orbital stability of spectrally stable solitary waves against localized perturbations. Our analysis exploits the Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction method, the instability index count developed for linear Hamiltonian systems, and resolvent estimates.

Abstract:The $abcd$-Boussinesq system is a model of two equations that can describe the propagation of small-amplitude long waves in both directions in the water of finite depth. Considering the Hamiltonian regimes, where the parameters $b$ and $d$ in the system satisfy $b=d>0$, small solutions in the energy space are globally defined. Then, a variational approach is applied to establish the existence and nonlinear stability of the set of solitary-wave solutions for the generalized $abcb$-Boussinesq system. The main point of the analysis is to show that the traveling-wave solutions of the generalized $abcb$-Boussinesq system converge to nontrivial solitary-wave solutions of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. Moreover, if $p$ is the exponent of the nonlinear terms for the generalized $abcb$-Boussinesq system, then the nonlinear stability of the set of solitary-waves is obtained for any $p$ with $ 0 < p < p_0$ where $p_0 $ is strictly larger than $4$, while it has been known that the critical exponent for the stability of solitary waves of the generalized KdV equations is equal to $ 4$.

Abstract:In this note, we extend the detailed study of the linearized dynamics obtained for cnoidal waves of the Korteweg--de Vries equation in \cite{JFA-R} to small-amplitude periodic traveling waves of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations that are not subject to Benjamin--Feir instability. With the adapted notion of stability, this provides for such waves, global-in-time bounded stability in any Sobolev space, and asymptotic stability of dispersive type. When doing so, we actually prove that such results also hold for waves of arbitrary amplitude satisfying a form of spectral stability designated here as dispersive spectral stability.

Weak stability of the sum of $K$ solitary waves for Half-wave equation

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the subcritical half-wave equation in the one-dimensional case. Let $R_k(t,x)$ be $K$ solitary wave solutions of the half-wave equation with different translations $x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_K$. If the relative distances of the solitary waves $x_k-x_{k-1}$ are large enough, we prove that the sum of the $R_k(t)$ is weakly stable. To prove this result, we use an energy method and the local mass monotonicity property. However, unlike the single-solitary wave or NLS cases, different waves exhibit the strongest interactions in dimension one. In order to obtain the local mass monotonicity property to estimate the remainder of the geometrical decomposition, as well as non-local effects on localization functions and non-local operator $|D|$, we utilize the Carlderón estimate and the integration representation formula of the half-wave operator.

Abstract:In this paper, we first introduce the long-time behavior stability of solitary waves for the weakly damped Korteweg–de Vries equation. More concretely, solutions of the dissipative system with the initial values near a -speed solitary wave, are approximated by a long curve on the family of solitary waves with the time-varying speed being small, in the long-time period (i.e., ). Meanwhile, the approximation difference in a suitably weighted space is of the order of the damping coefficient and of some kind of exponential weight form. As a comparison, we also study the long-time behavior stability, i.e., for , the solutions are approximated by a long curve on the family of solitary waves with the exponential decay speed ( ), when the initial values are near a -speed solitary wave. However, here, the approximation difference merely defined in depends on the damping coefficient ε and the exponential decay coefficient β .

Abstract:We propose a numerical method for finding solitary wave solutions of generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations by solving the nonlinear eigenvalue problem on an unbounded domain. The artificial boundary conditions are obtained to make the domain finite. We specially discuss the soliton solutions of the K(m,n) equation and KdV–K(m,n) equation. Furthermore for the mixed models of linear and nonlinear dispersion, the collision behaviors of soliton–soliton and soliton–antisoliton are observed.

Abstract:We consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation $\partial_t u = -\partial_x(\partial_x^2 u + f(u))$, where $f(u)$ is an odd function of class $C^3$. Under some assumptions on $f$, this equation admits \emph{solitary waves}, that is solutions of the form $u(t, x) = Q_v(x - vt - x_0)$, for $v$ in some range $(0, v_*)$. We study pure two-solitons in the case of the same limit speed, in other words global solutions $u(t)$ such that \begin{equation} \label{eq:abstract} \tag{$\ast$} \lim_{t\to\infty}\|u(t) - (Q_v(\cdot - x_1(t)) \pm Q_v(\cdot - x_2(t)))\|_{H^1} = 0, \qquad \text{with}\quad\lim_{t \to \infty}x_2(t) - x_1(t) = \infty. \end{equation} Existence of such solutions is known for $f(u) = |u|^{p-1}u$ with $p \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus \{5\}$ and $p > 2$. We describe the~dynamical behavior of any solution satisfying \eqref{eq:abstract} under the assumption that $Q_v$ is linearly unstable (which corresponds to $p > 5$ for power nonlinearities). We prove that in this case the sign in \eqref{eq:abstract} is necessarily "$+$", which corresponds to an attractive interaction. We also prove that the~distance $x_2(t) - x_1(t)$ between the solitons equals $\frac{2}{\sqrt v}\log(\kappa t) + o(1)$ for some $\kappa = \kappa(v) > 0$.

A Direct Construction of Solitary Waves for a Fractional Korteweg-de Vries Equation With an Inhomogeneous Symbol

Abstract:We construct solitary waves for the fractional Korteweg-De Vries type equation $u_t + (\Lambda^{-s}u + u^2)_x = 0$, where $\Lambda^{-s}$ denotes the Bessel potential operator $(1 + |D|^2)^{-\frac{s}{2}}$ for $s \in (0,\infty)$. The approach is to parameterise the known periodic solution curves through the relative wave height. Using a priori estimates, we show that the periodic waves locally uniformly converge to waves with negative tails, which are transformed to the desired branch of solutions. The obtained branch reaches a highest wave, the behavior of which varies with $s$. The work is a generalisation of recent work by Ehrnström-Nik-Walker, and is as far as we know the first simultaneous construction of small, intermediate and highest solitary waves for the complete family of (inhomogeneous) fractional KdV equations with negative-order dispersive operators. The obtained waves display exponential decay rate as $|x| \to \infty$.

Stable periodic waves in coupled Kuramoto-Sivashinsky - Korteweg-de Vries equations

Abstract:Periodic waves are investigated in a system composed of a Kuramoto-Sivashinsky - Korteweg-de Vries (KS-KdV) equation, which is linearly coupled to an extra linear dissipative equation. The model describes, e.g., a two-layer liquid film flowing down an inclined plane. It has been recently shown that the system supports stable solitary pulses. We demonstrate that a perturbation analysis, based on the balance equation for the field momentum, predicts the existence of stable cnoidal waves (CnWs) in the same system. It is found that the mean value U of the wave field u in the main subsystem, but not the mean value of the extra field, affects the stability of the periodic waves. Three different areas can be distinguished inside the stability region in the parameter plane (L,U), where L is the wave's period. In these areas, stable are, respectively, CnWs with positive velocity, constant solutions, and CnWs with negative velocity. Multistability, i.e., the coexistence of several attractors, including the waves with several maxima per period, appears at large value of L. The analytical predictions are completely confirmed by direct simulations. Stable waves are also found numerically in the limit of vanishing dispersion, when the KS-KdV equation goes over into the KS one.

Abstract:Families of symmetric embedded solitary waves of a perturbed Fifth-order order Korteweg–de Vries (FKdV) system were treated in Choudhury et al. (2022) using perturbative and reversible systems techniques. Here, the stability of those solutions, which was not considered in the earlier paper, is detailed. In addition, the results of Choudhury et al. (2022) are extended to the case of asymmetric solitary waves, as well as their stability. Finally, other novel multi-humped regular solitary waves of this system are derived using convergent infinite series solutions for the homoclinic orbits of the FKdV-traveling wave equation.

Abstract:In this work, we consider the generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation $$\partial_t u+\partial_x u+\partial_x( |u|^pu)-\partial_t \partial_x^{2}u=0, \quad(t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}, $$ with $p>4$. This equation has the traveling wave solutions $\phi_{c}(x-ct), $ for any frequency $c>1.$ It has been proved by Souganidis and Strauss \cite{Strauss-1990} that, there exists a number $c_{0}(p)>1$, such that solitary waves $\phi_{c}(x-ct)$ with $1<c<c_{0}(p) $ is orbitally unstable, while for $c>c_{0}(p), $ $\phi_{c}(x-ct)$ is orbitally stable. The linear exponential instability in the former case was further proved by Pego and Weinstein \cite{Pego-1991-eigenvalue}. In this paper, we prove the orbital instability in the critical case $c=c_{0}(p)$.

Abstract:The modified Korteweg-de Vries-type equations can be used to describe the interfacial waves in a fluid, elastic quasi-plane waves in a lattice, and Alfvén waves in a collisionless plasma. In this paper, we investigate a coupled extended modified Korteweg-de Vries system in a fluid. We construct a Lax pair and obtain some infinitely-many conservation laws under our Lax pair. The first-order breathers and first-order breather-to-soliton transition condition are derived. Under the first-order breather-to-soliton transition condition, we derive the W-shaped solitons, M-shaped solitons, anti-dark solitons and periodic waves. Finally, we discuss the modulation instability for the aforementioned system via the linear stability analysis.

Stability and instability of solitary waves in fractional generalized KdV equation in all dimensions

Abstract:We study stability of solitary wave solutions for the fractional generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation $$ \partial_t u- \partial_{x_1} D^{\alpha}u+ \tfrac{1}{m}\partial_{x_1}(u^m)=0, ~ (x_1,\dots,x_d)\in \mathbb{R}^d, \, \, t\in \mathbb{R}, \, \, 0<\alpha <2, $$ in any spatial dimension $d\geq 1$ and nonlinearity $m>1$. The arguments developed here are independent of the spatial dimension and rely on the new estimates for spatial decay of ground states and their regularity. In the $L^2$-subcritical case, we prove the orbital stability of solitary waves using the concentration-compactness argument, the commutator estimates and expansions of nonlocal operator $D^\alpha$ in several variables. In the $L^2$-supercritical case, we show that solitary waves are unstable. More precisely, the instability is obtained by constructing an explicit sequence of initial conditions that move away from a soliton orbit in finite time, this is shown in conjunction with the modulation and truncation arguments, and incorporating the decay and regularity of the ground states. As a consequence, in 1D we show the instability of solitary waves of the supercritical generalized Benjamin-Ono equation ($\alpha=1$) and the dispersion-generalized Benjamin-Ono equation ($1<\alpha<2$); furthermore, new results on the instability are obtained in the weaker dispersion regime when $\frac{1}{2}<\alpha<1$. This work should be of interest in studying stability of solitary waves and other coherent structures in a variety of dispersive equations that involve nonlocal operators.

Asymptotic stability of fast solitary waves to the Benjamin Equation

Abstract:We prove the asymptotic stability of the high speed solitary waves to the Benjamin equation. This is done by establishing a Liouville property for the nonlinear evolution of the Benjamin equation around these solitary waves. To do this, inspired by Kenig-Martel-Robbiano 2011, we make use of the KdV limit of the Benjamin equation together with known rigidity property of the KdV flow. The main difficulties are linked to the presence of the Hilbert transform, that is a non-local operator, as well as the non-positivity of the quadratic part of the energy in the case $ \gamma<0$ which is the physical case.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the unsteady korteweg-de vries equation that plays an important role in describing the shallow water. Two analytical techniques namely the Sardar-subequation method and the energy balance method are employed to seek the abundant traveling wave solutions for the first time. By these two methods, plenty of traveling wave solutions such as the bright solitary wave solutions, dark solitary wave solutions, singular periodic wave solutions and perfect periodic wave solution that expressed in terms of the generalized hyperbolic functions, generalized trigonometric functions and the cosine function are obtained. Finally, the dynamic behaviors of the solutions are described through the 3D plot and 2D curve. The results in this paper demonstrate that the proposed methods are powerful and effective to construct the traveling wave solutions of the nonlinear evolution equations in ocean engineering and science.

Abstract:This work studies an inhomogeneous generalized Hartree equation with inverse square potential. The purpose is to prove the existence and strong instability of inter-critical standing waves. This means that there are infinitely many data near to the ground state, such that the associated solution blows-up in finite time. The proof combines a variational analysis with the standard variance identity. The challenge is to deal with three difficulties: the singular potential |x|−2, an inhomogeneous term |x|−λ, and a non-local source term.

Stability and instability of the quasilinear Gross--Pitaevskii dark solitons

Abstract:We study a quasilinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero conditions at infinity. In previous works, we obtained a continuous branch of traveling waves, given by dark solitons indexed by their speed. Neglecting the quasilinear term, one recovers the Gross--Pitaevskii equation, for which the branch of dark solitons is stable. Moreover, Z.~Lin showed that the Vakhitov--Kolokolov~(VK) stability criterion (in terms of the momentum of solitons) holds for general semilinear equations with nonvanishing conditions at infinity. In the quasilinear case, we prove that the VK stability criterion still applies, by generalizing Lin's arguments. Therefore, we deduce that the branch of dark solitons is stable for weak quasilinear interactions. For stronger quasilinear interactions, a cusp appears in the energy-momentum diagram, implying the stability of fast waves and the instability of slow waves.
