Abstract:Conventional analysis of buried reinforced concrete structures subjected to severe blast loading usually fails to incorporate randomness in both applied loads and structural characteristics. If this randomness is not accounted for, then the computed response presents only results in a deterministic sense. This paper presents a theoretical procedure to analyze shallow-buried reinforced concrete box-type structures using a stochastic single-degree-of-freedom model. The structural resistance functions that describe the effects of flexure, shear and inplane thrust are considered as random variables. Fragility is expressed as a function of the peak load. Failure is assumed to occur when the response exceeds a pre-established failure surface which is derived based on a probabilistic analysis of random variables. Damping is also considered as a random parameter. A Monte Carlo simulation is employed to obtain statistical results to compare with theoretical results.
