Abstract:As the product of multicultural syncretism, the decoration of the caves of the later Xi Xia Dynasty in the Yulin Grottoes, Anxi Prefecture, mainly preserved the same character as that of the Central Plains in the Northern Song Dynasty. The decorative patterns are valuable surviving examples for comparison with those in the Yingzaofashi (Handbook of Criteria for Construction) of the 12th century. Through on-site investigation of three later caves at Yulin (Caves 2, 3 and 10), this paper identifies and compares the decorative motifs from the late Xi Xia Dynasty with those recorded in Yingzaofashi.
