Abstract:Rapid urban expansion may cause a decline in land-use efficiency and result in a series of social and ecological problems. Economic transition has significantly influenced urban land development, and provides a good perspective for analyzing changes in land-use efficiency. This paper primarily discusses the theoretical influence of economic transition on urban land-use efficiency. Using 126 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Zone as examples, we explore the spatial-temporal characteristics of changes in land-use efficiency, and estimate the relationship between land-use efficiency and economic transition with econometric models. The results show that the land-use efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Zone has generally been improved over time, and presented significant clustering effects around urban agglomerations. Panel data analysis suggests that foreign direct investment in the globalization process and tax burdens, which were further aggravated by the reform of the responsibility and revenue assignment between local and central government, have had a significant negative effect on land-use efficiency. On the contrary, marketization, urbanization, and fiscal expenditure decentralization have exerted significant positive effects. We also found that agglomeration effects and location advantages did play a positive role in improving land-use efficiency, which accounted for the spatial inequality. This paper concludes with policy proposals to improve the intensification and economization level of urban land use.

Abstract:Growing populations and rapid urbanization have put tremendous pressure on the food supply. The rural hinterland around cities is an important source of the urban food supply chain. Facing the constraints of China’s land stock, reasonable use of land space and optimization of agricultural crop structure is crucial to meet the food demand. Von Thünen Model, which is fronted by a 19th-century German economist, outlines a rural landscape of commercial farmers growing agricultural products for local markets while proposing basic patterns and principles of land use in agriculture. Using data from China’s OVOP (“One village, One product”), this paper analyzes the agricultural location and crop choices around two levels of cities (provincial capital cities, and county-level cities) by using Thünen’s theory. The results showed that crop density did decrease as the distance to urban increased. Crop rings are present in the vicinity of both metropolitan and county-level cities, distributed according to crop intensity. Evidence from China suggests that agricultural location and crop selection still follow the basic principles of the Thünen model. Planners and policymakers should refocus on the Von Thünen model to utilize land space and optimize agricultural production scientifically and efficiently.

Abstract:There are three main contradictions associated with urbanization: population growth and food demand, urban sprawl and production space, and production patterns and energy consumption. The pressure of urbanization has led to a mismatch between production and consumption in space and pattern. The current status and trends in urban food system planning illustrated that sustainable consumption and production were closely related to their spatial layout. The paper took a simulated sustainable food system in urban community as an example. It formulated a rational spatial planning strategy based on urban agriculture of different scales, technologies, and efficiencies, quantified productive community metrics to accommodate different scales of urban space, and wrote algorithms to develop a spatial model of a meta-cellular automaton that coupled consumer housing with productive surfaces. Finally, by comparing and optimizing the spatial patterns of multiple solutions, urban agriculture-oriented urban community planning was developed. The model was only a preliminary attempt at food system planning, but it explored the distribution patterns of housing and agriculture within a given territory in three steps: theoretical strategy-morphological simulation-planning design while meeting urban and productivity indicators. It demonstrated the feasibility of productive spaces and explored a planning strategy for urban communities that supports sustainable consumption and production.

Abstract:It points that to develop urban agriculture would be an opportunity in promoting the construction of new countryside.The author sorts out the conceptions of urban agriculture used in the literature domestically and internationally.It is argued that urban agriculture should represent a new mode of upgrading the agriculture in China under the background of rapid urbanization.However,based on the observation of rural policies and practices in Beijing,the author criticizes that in some rural area,to develop urban agriculture is isolated from the participation of common villagers and the regeneration of rural communities.In conclusion,it is suggested that urban agriculture should play its comprehensive role economically,socially and ecologically,so that the villagers' income could be increased collectively and the ecological conditions in agricultural production and rural community could be improved simultaneously.

Abstract:This paper develops a framework to measure the impact of agricultural research on urban poverty. Increased investments in agricultural R&D can lower food prices by increasing food production, and lower food prices benefit the urban poor because they often spend more than 60% of their income on food. Application of the framework to China shows that these food price effects are large and that the benefits for the urban poor have been about as large as the benefits for the rural poor.

Abstract:The integrated development of urban and rural areas requires that the government take responsibility for the overall development of the countryside. Chinese agricultural and rural policies characterized by state intervention and government leadership have played an important role in promoting agricultural development and increasing farmers' incomes as well as balancing development in urban and rural areas. However, the effectiveness of current agricultural policies in promoting agricultural productivity is now clearly leveling off. Given this situation, the authors argue that it is imperative to construct a new analytical framework featuring government regulation and guidance of agricultural and rural development. In this framework, the government must clearly define the boundaries between its activities and those of the market and rural social organizations. While fully respecting the fundamental role of the market in allocation of resources and rural self-management, the government should exercise its power as a backstop. Further, the government needs to establish a logical sequence for government functions such as formulating the basic operating system of the market and society, correcting market failure and social dysfunction and cultivating market/social entities. To use this new analytical framework to strengthen and improve its regulation and guidance of agricultural and rural development, the government needs to reform the basic rural management and agricultural support and protection systems and to pay attention to the cultivation of market entities in agricultural production on the basis of agricultural marketization. Furthermore, it needs to construct a basic urban-rural integrated public service system with the government as the leading actor, carry out innovations in the management system of rural society and fully mobilize the social forces to take part in the administration of public affairs. It also needs to reconstruct the system of government administration and management to ensure the thorough implementation of agricultural and rural development policies.

Leisure agriculture is the most distinctive part of distinction between urban agriculture and rural agriculture. Leisure agriculture is the most important part of new forms of urban agriculture and innovation. Abstract:Fuzzy on the concept of "urban agriculture" largely hampered the development of research.The reason of the fuzzy and dispute is because this concept is used to summarize three kinds of different essentially agricultural activity in different occasions.Considering on the need to clarify the concepts,"urban agriculture" and "agriculture on rural suburb of city" and "agriculture characterized by city" can be used to summarize these three kinds of agricultural activity respectively,and we should focus research on "agriculture characterized by city"."Agriculture characterized by city" is the ideal agricultural pattern which is based on "agriculture on rural suburb of city " which is existing agriculture in natural."Agriculture characterized by city" is the concept which emphasizes functional characteristics as well as being based on the region,and which emphasize macroscopic system as well as being based on micro unit.The issue on development of "agriculture characterized by city" is essentially optimizing allocation of city resources which is adapt to the development of the urban.So,the basic research methods should be optimization on agriculture production structure on rural suburb of city from the perspective of agricultural location.Research on "agriculture characterized by city" should focus on city resources and environment condition,micro unit production structure mode,macro industrial structure and regional layout,technology integration and innovation,and organization model and support policy,etc.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization globally has set food security under the spotlight, with urban agriculture emerging as a pivotal strategy to address the challenge. In the context of Chinese cities, urban agriculture is revealed in three distinct forms: small-scale, capital-intensive, and tourism-oriented agricultural practices, each influenced by the local socio-economic milieu and governmental directives. This paper examines the multifaceted benefits of urban agriculture, which include supporting social cohesion, advancing public health, fostering environmental stewardship, and creating economic avenues. Despite its numerous advantages, urban agriculture in China contends with obstacles such as land scarcity, capital acquisition, market access, and require more supportive government frameworks. The study delves into the ongoing evolution of the Nature-Based Solutions in urban agricultural practices in China, examining the existing barriers and proposing robust strategies to address them. Drawing upon successful models from the Global North, exemplified by initiatives in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Singapore, the paper outlines a comprehensive set of recommendations aimed at integrating urban agriculture in Chinese cities. The recommendations span four key areas: the integration of agricultural spaces within urban areas, innovative approaches to land and resource utilisation, enhanced governmental support and policy-making, and the establishment of effective planning and regulatory mechanisms. The implementation of these strategies promises to elevate the quality of life for Chinese urban dwellers, pave the way for eco-friendlier urban landscapes, and fortify food security. The ultimate goal is to cultivate a healthier urban future and a resilient agricultural framework that reaps enduring benefits for the populace of China.

Abstract:In order to plan agricultural land in urban scientifically,it was necessary to establish the concept of urban agricultural areas,and research the basic connotation of urban agricultural areas,the spatial characteristics and geographical type.Urban agricultural area was one type of urban function region which consists of agricultural land in urban,and generally limited to the municipal districts.One idealized spatial scale of urban agricultural area was around 200 hm 2,which could be well integrated into the general urban functional groups in optimal spatial form in small concentration and large distribution.The types of urban agricultural area could be characterized 5 types,as follows:urban agricultural area in urbanized area,urban agricultural area in quasi-urban areas,urban agricultural area in semi-urban areas,urban agricultural area in shallow urbanized areas,and urban agricultural area in urban ecologically sensitive areas.In a word,it was an important new task for urban planning to form the new pattern of the integration of urban and rural economic and social development,which based on the differences of the urban agriculture areas location characteristics,resource endowments and functional requirements,and on the allocation of multi-functional agriculture relying on urban and services urban rationally.

Abstract:Founded on agricultural civilization, the traditional China was indisputably a "rural society" in the farming era. On this basis, the article takes ancient Chinese cities of feudal times as research objects, and explores the influence of farming activities and rural relations on these cities. Mainly through literature review and deductive reasoning, and partly using typological analysis and ideological analysis methods, it finds out that whether in watercourses, vestibules, backyards or gardens, the urban space in ancient China was saturated with various kinds of "farming elements", such as livestock, grains, fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc. Through analyzing their existence, spatial distribution and values, the article tries to interpret the characteristics and significance of these urban farming elements and spaces that were deeply shaped by the Chinese philosophy of "Unity of Man and Nature" and profoundly influenced by agricultural civilization. Such an urban farming tradition enlightens that it can be a useful method to mix farming elements into modern Chinese cities so as to integrate the separated urban-rural relationship.

Abstract:With its early start in urbanization, Europe has accumulated a wealth of practical experience in urban agriculture (UA), exploring various development models. This paper compares and analyzes the characteristic patterns of UA in Europe and China through theoretical research, academic frontier exploration, and case analysis. In order to investigate and analyze theoretical developments and the current state of academic frontiers in a systematic, accessible, and comprehensive approach, the methodology of bibliometric analysis has been utilized. A bibliometric method is applied to analyze relevant data from the Web of Science (WoS) core collection database and 2230 CNKI publications. The case study section conducts separate field research on nine representative European practices of urban food gardening and urban farming. Additionally, the study scrutinizes UA research development and its implementation in Hangzhou, China. Based on the findings of this study, the authors recommend that European approaches to the development of UA in China's future UA practice be taken into account, in particular their methods and strategies for realizing social and cultural benefits. It is imperative to integrate UA projects into urban green space system planning and to rationalize their construction types. Simultaneously, Chinese scholars are encouraged to explore the socio-cultural functions of UA, with a particular focus on urban agricultural heritage conservation.

Abstract:Agricultural Eco-efficiency improvement is essential to achieve high-quality and sustainable agricultural development. Based on panel data of 126 cities or autonomous prefectures in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2007 to 2021, under the requirements of high-quality agricultural development in the new era, this study first evaluated the agricultural Eco-efficiency with the super-slack-based measurement (SBM)-undesirable model and then examined the extemporization heterogeneity. Subsequently, the leading influencing factors of spatial heterogeneity in agricultural Eco-efficiency and their interactions were determined with the geographical detector method. The findings indicated that the average agricultural Eco-efficiency value of majority of cities was above 0.6, and the agricultural Eco-efficiency of most cities still had room for improvement. The agricultural Eco-efficiency of the several cities varied significantly. Overall, the middle reaches had higher agricultural Eco-efficiency than the upper and lower reaches. The north had higher agricultural Eco-efficiency than the south. Finally, the spatial heterogeneity in the agricultural Eco-efficiency in the Yangtze River Economic Belt was mainly influenced by the planting structure, farming machinery input intensity and urbanization level, and the interaction among these influencing factors enhanced the spatial heterogeneity. Therefore, it is of great significance to give attention to these influencing factors and regional coordination and cooperation for sustainable agricultural development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
