Abstract:While visualization has been widely used as a data presentation tool in both desktop and mobile devices, the rapid visualization of information from images is still underexplored. In this work, we present a smartphone image acquisition and visualization approach for text-based data. Our prototype, ShotVis, takes images of text captured from mobile devices and extracts information for visualization. First, scattered characters in the text are processed and interactively reformulated to be stored as structured data (i.e., tables of numbers, lists of words, sentences). From there, ShotVis allows users to interactively bind visual forms to the underlying data and produce visualizations of the selected forms through touch-based interactions. In this manner, ShotVis can quickly summarize text from images into word clouds, scatterplots, and various other visualizations all through a simple click of the camera. In this way, ShotVis facilitates the interactive exploration of text data captured via cameras in smartphone devices. To demonstrate our prototype, several case studies are presented along with one user study to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:Interpersonal ties, such as strong ties and weak ties, describe the information carried by an edge in social network. Tracking the dynamic changes of interpersonal ties can thus enhance our understanding of the evolution of a complex network. Nevertheless, existing studies in dynamic network visualization mostly focus on the temporal changes of nodes or structures of the network without an adequate support of analysis and exploration of the temporal changes of interpersonal ties. In this paper, we introduce a new visual analytics method that enables interactive analysis and exploration of the dynamic changes of interpersonal ties. The method integrates four well-linked visualizations, including a scatterplot, a pixelbar chart, a layered graph, and a node–link diagram, to allow for multi-perspective analysis of the evolution of interpersonal ties. The scatterplot created by multi-dimensional scaling can help reveal the clusters of ties and detect abnormal ties, while other visualizations allow users to explore the clusters of ties interactively from different perspectives. Abstract:The VAST 2018 company communication dataset reflects current challenges in analyzing specific sub-group within a large dynamic network. We apply multiple visual analytic techniques. This also includes a traceability system, a custom visualization tool enable tracing a focused group on multivariate dynamic networks. We manage to tackle the tasks of abstracting group structural features and discovering other groups tied closely.

Abstract:In VAST Challenge 2017, we propose an interactive and collaborative visual analytic system for the analysis of traffic sensor data. Our system fully incorporates the power of spatial-temporal visualization, sequence mining techniques and collaborative analysis. It allows users to conduct multi-facet and interactive data analysis in a highly efficient way. Abstract:Images in visualization publications contain rich information, such as novel visual designs, model details, and experiment results. Constructing such an image corpus can contribute to the community in many aspects, including literature analysis from the perspective of visual representations, empirical studies on visual memorability, and machine learning research for chart detection. This study presents VisImages, a high-quality and large-scale image corpus collected from visualization publications. VisImages contain fruitful and diverse annotations for each image, including captions, types of visual representations, and bounding boxes. First, we algorithmically extract the images associated with captions and manually correct the errors. Second, to categorize visualizations in publications, we extend and iteratively refine the existing taxonomy through a multi-round pilot study. Third, guided by this taxonomy, we invite senior visualization practitioners to annotate visual representations that appear in each image. In this process, we borrow techniques such as "gold standards" and majority voting for quality control. Finally, we recruit the crowd to draw bounding boxes for visual representations in the images. The resulting corpus contains 35,096 annotated visualizations from 12,267 images with 12,057 captions in 1397 papers from VAST and InfoVis. We demonstrate the usefulness of VisImages through the following four use cases: 1) analysis of color usage in VAST and InfoVis papers across years, 2) discussion of the researcher preference on visualization types, 3) spatial distribution analysis of visualizations in visual analytic systems, and 4) training visualization detection models.

Abstract:We are building an interactive, visual text analysis tool that aids users in analyzing a large collection of text. Unlike existing work in text analysis, which focuses either on developing sophisticated text analytic techniques or inventing novel visualization metaphors, ours is tightly integrating state-of-the-art text analytics with interactive visualization to maximize the value of both. In this paper, we focus on describing our work from two aspects. First, we present the design and development of a time-based, visual text summary that effectively conveys complex text summarization results produced by the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model. Second, we describe a set of rich interaction tools that allow users to work with a created visual text summary to further interpret the summarization results in context and examine the text collection from multiple perspectives. As a result, our work offers two unique contributions. First, we provide an effective visual metaphor that transforms complex and even imperfect text summarization results into a comprehensible visual summary of texts. Second, we offer users a set of flexible visual interaction tools as the alternatives to compensate for the deficiencies of current text summarization techniques. We have applied our work to a number of text corpora and our evaluation shows the promise of the work, especially in support of complex text analyses.

Abstract:Air pollution has become a serious public health problem for many cities around the world. To find the causes of air pollution, the propagation processes of air pollutants must be studied at a large spatial scale. However, the complex and dynamic wind fields lead to highly uncertain pollutant transportation. The state-of-the-art data mining approaches cannot fully support the extensive analysis of such uncertain spatiotemporal propagation processes across multiple districts without the integration of domain knowledge. The limitation of these automated approaches motivates us to design and develop AirVis, a novel visual analytics system that assists domain experts in efficiently capturing and interpreting the uncertain propagation patterns of air pollution based on graph visualizations. Designing such a system poses three challenges: a) the extraction of propagation patterns; b) the scalability of pattern presentations; and c) the analysis of propagation processes. To address these challenges, we develop a novel pattern mining framework to model pollutant transportation and extract frequent propagation patterns efficiently from large-scale atmospheric data. Furthermore, we organize the extracted patterns hierarchically based on the minimum description length (MDL) principle and empower expert users to explore and analyze these patterns effectively on the basis of pattern topologies. We demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach through two case studies conducted with a real-world dataset and positive feedback from domain experts.

Abstract:Effective analysis of large text collections remains a challenging problem given the growing volume of available text data. Recently, text mining techniques have been rapidly developed for automatically extracting key information from massive text data. Topic modeling, as one of the novel techniques that extracts a thematic structure from documents, is widely used to generate text summarization and foster an overall understanding of the corpus content. Although powerful, this technique may not be directly applicable for general analytics scenarios since the topics and topic–document relationship are often presented probabilistically in models. Moreover, information that plays an important role in knowledge discovery, for example, times and authors, is hardly reflected in topic modeling for comprehensive analysis. In this paper, we address this issue by presenting a visual analytics system, VISTopic, to help users make sense of large document collections based on topic modeling. VISTopic first extracts a set of hierarchical topics using a novel hierarchical latent tree model (HLTM) (Liu et al., 2014). In specific, a topic view accounting for the model features is designed for overall understanding and interactive exploration of the topic organization. To leverage multi-perspective information for visual analytics, VISTopic further provides an evolution view to reveal the trend of topics and a document view to show details of topical documents. Three case studies based on the dataset of IEEE VIS conference demonstrate the effectiveness of our system in gaining insights from large document collections.

Abstract:The analysis for images helps people to gain insights by extracting the inner features and variances between them. However, it is hard to analyze the underlying events further without users participation. We proposes a visual analytic system based on collaborative tagging techniques to allow users to identify features and changes from multi-spectral images. We evaluate our system with mini challenge 3 of VAST Challenge 2017. The exploration results validate the efficiency and effectiveness of our system.

Abstract:Reading literature is essential to research. However, the explosive growth, the multidimensional attributes, and the complex relationships pose a tremendous challenge for researchers to understand and analyze literature efficiently. We propose LitVis, a visual analysis approach to help users manage and explore literature based on its metadata. LitVis allows users to select literature collection of interest and analyze them from their attributes, text, and citation networks. From the perspective of attribute values, LitVis supports users in understanding the distribution of literature and filtering individuals of interest. From the perspective of the text, LitVis uses the Latent Dirichlet Allocation model to extract topics from the literature and allows users to adjust the topic extraction results interactively. From the citation network perspective, LitVis enables users to analyze citation relationships within and between topics to help them understand research development. One use case and carefully designed interviews with domain experts validate the effectiveness of LitVis in the management and analysis of the literature. The results show that LitVis help users comprehensively identify the literature collection of interest and efficiently analyze the evolution of research topics.
VIStory: interactive storyboard for exploring visual information in scientific publications

Abstract:Many visual analytics have been developed for examining scientific publications comprising wealthy data such as authors and citations. The studies provide unprecedented insights on a variety of applications, e.g., literature review and collaboration analysis. However, visual information (e.g., figures) that is widely employed for storytelling and methods description are often neglected. We present VIStory, an interactive storyboard for exploring visual information in scientific publications. We harvest a new dataset of a large corpora of figures, using an automatic figure extraction method. Each figure contains various attributes such as dominant color and width/height ratio, together with faceted metadata of the publication including venues, authors, and keywords. To depict these information, we develop an intuitive interface consisting of three components: (1) Faceted View enables efficient query by publication metadata, benefiting from a nested table structure, (2) Storyboard View arranges paper rings—a well-designed glyph for depicting figure attributes, in a themeriver layout to reveal temporal trends, and (3) Endgame View presents a highlighted figure together with the publication metadata. We illustrate the applicability of VIStory with case studies on two datasets, i.e., 10-year IEEE VIS publications, and publications by a research team at CVPR, ICCV, and ECCV conferences. Quantitative and qualitative results from a formal user study demonstrate the efficiency of VIStory in exploring visual information in scientific publications.

WildVis: Open Source Visualizer for Million-Scale Chat Logs in the Wild

Abstract:The increasing availability of real-world conversation data offers exciting opportunities for researchers to study user-chatbot interactions. However, the sheer volume of this data makes manually examining individual conversations impractical. To overcome this challenge, we introduce WildVis, an interactive tool that enables fast, versatile, and large-scale conversation analysis. WildVis provides search and visualization capabilities in the text and embedding spaces based on a list of criteria. To manage million-scale datasets, we implemented optimizations including search index construction, embedding precomputation and compression, and caching to ensure responsive user interactions within seconds. We demonstrate WildVis's utility through three case studies: facilitating chatbot misuse research, visualizing and comparing topic distributions across datasets, and characterizing user-specific conversation patterns. WildVis is open-source and designed to be extendable, supporting additional datasets and customized search and visualization functionalities.

Context preserving dynamic word cloud visualization

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a visualization method that couples a trend chart with word clouds to illustrate temporal content evolutions in a set of documents. Specifically, we use a trend chart to encode the overall semantic evolution of document content over time. In our work, semantic evolution of a document collection is modeled by varied significance of document content, represented by a set of representative keywords, at different time points. At each time point, we also use a word cloud to depict the representative keywords. Since the words in a word cloud may vary one from another over time (e.g., words with increased importance), we use geometry meshes and an adaptive force-directed model to lay out word clouds to highlight the word differences between any two subsequent word clouds. Our method also ensures semantic coherence and spatial stability of word clouds over time. Our work is embodied in an interactive visual analysis system that helps users to perform text analysis and derive insights from a large collection of documents. Our preliminary evaluation demonstrates the usefulness and usability of our work.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWe are building a topic-based, interactive visual analytic tool that aids users in analyzing large collections of text. To help users quickly discover content evolution and significant content transitions within a topic over time, here we present a novel, constraint-based approach to temporal topic segmentation. Our solution splits a discovered topic into multiple linear, non-overlapping sub-topics along a timeline by satisfying a diverse set of semantic, temporal, and visualization constraints simultaneously. For each derived sub-topic, our solution also automatically selects a set of representative keywords to summarize the main content of the sub-topic. Our extensive evaluation, including a crowd-sourced user study, demonstrates the effectiveness of our method over an existing baseline.

Abstract:With the emergence of massive texts, information overload and data redundancy raise great challenges for information processing. To address these issues, text visualization has been proposed for understanding the content, structure and patterns hidden behind complicated textual information. Text visualization integrates several techniques including text analysis, data mining, data visualization, computer graphics, human computer interaction, cognitive science and so on. In this paper, we first introduce the concepts of text visualization. Afterwards, we present the research achievements according to different visualization objects, and introduce typical visualization methods and schemes.
