Abstract:The nonlinear equation governing both the nonpropagating soliton and kink soliton in a channel with slowly varying depth of water has been derived using the perturbation method of multiple scales. Both nonpropagating soliton and kink soliton solutions for the special case of a mildly sloping channel have been given. The effects of the surface tension of water on solitons have been taken into account. The results obtained show that the two types of solitons always move slowly toward the shallow end of the channel with uniform accelerations, and the soliton's average drift velocities as well as accelerations are proportional to the channel slope and slightly reduced by the surface tension.

Abstract:The interaction of solitary wave with the boundary of the parametrically excited water trough is studied numerically. Four cases of the interaction found experimentally are verified by the numerical simulation using the Miles' equation. The physical origin of the interaction is also discussed, and a force between the soliton and the boundary is obtained.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the recent experimental data, a new equation governing the motion of the solitons in a small rectangular water trough is proposed by using multiple-scale method. Both analytical and numerical analyses reveal that the equation gives a good explanation for some of the typical experimental observations on the evolution of the single and double solitons as well as the effect of surface tension on both breather and kink solitons. It also predicts the reflection of double-soliton at the end walls of the trough.

Abstract:In a long and narrow trough parametrically excited by two frequency modes along vertical direction, the irrotational movement of an incompressible inviscid fluid has been investigated. Using the methods of multi-scale and average variational principle a nonlinear partial differential equations have been derived, that the complex displacement of the movement of fluid surface must satisfy. Under certain conditions, the solution of that equation can be obtained, it's a solitary wave with the waveform as hyperbolic secant function. Correspondingly the relations between the water parameters and the exciting variables have been discussed.

Abstract:The evolution equation governing the positions of two interacting nonpropagating solitons is found by using the variational principle approach. Furthermore, the potential which characterizes the interaction between solitons is derived, from which some important results are obtained: (1) Two solitons with the same polarity always attract each other, while those with opposite polarity repel. (2) The repulsion is much weaker than the attraction and both attraction and repulsion are of short distance. (3) The period of mutual oscillation caused by interaction between two solitons with the same polarity increases as the drive amplitude rises; especially, the period can spread from zero to infinity as the initial distance between solitons increases. All the above results are well coincident with experiments.

Abstract:The chaotic behaviors of the time series of the breather (soliton) amplitude have been observed experimentally in the shallow water in the trough subjected to parametric exciting vertically. The results predict that the water solitary waves should be described by some chaotic equations in the higher order approximations as well as by the nonlinear Schordinger equation in the first order.

Abstract:Some new features of parametrically excited single and double standing solitons in a rectangular water trough are revealed experimentally, including the periodical reflections of a soliton near an end wall of the trough and the existence of the "mirror effect" at the boundaries as well as the further study of the collision dynamics of two like polarity solitons. Abstract:The motivation of this paper is to investigate some new soliton solutions and the trajectory problem of hybrid behavior for the (2+1)-dimensional Hirota-Satsuma-Ito equation. Firstly, based on the bilinear form and a new test function, a novel soliton solution and lump solution are obtained by employing parameter limit method. Secondly, based on Hirota's direct method and the long-wave limit method, the N -soliton solution, the high-order breather solution and the high-order lump solution are studied. More importantly, we studied the trajectory equations of lump solutions before and after collisions with some different solitons, such as collisions between l-lump and N solitons ( ), and collisions between l-lump and breathers. We also used a large number of two-dimensional and three-dimensional plots to display the results of the paper's research.

Abstract:The critical instability of the hydrodynamic solitons from a free and stationary surface has been systemically measured for various depths, breadths, and the ratio of the mixture solution of glycerin and water. The experiment shows that increasing the depth and breadth, and decreasing the ratio of the mixture mainly lead to the decreasing of the onset exciting acceleration. The experimental results have been qualitatively explained by linear stability theory in which the horizontal wave number has to be quantized due to the finite boundary of the small-aspect-ratio container.

Abstract:This paper investigates the weakly nonlinear isotropic bi-directional Benney--Luke (BL) equation, which is used to describe oceanic surface and internal waves in shallow water, with a particular focus on soliton dynamics. Using the Whitham modulation theory, we derive the modulation equations associated with the BL equation that describe the evolution of soliton amplitude and slope. By analyzing rarefaction waves and shock waves within these modulation equations, we derive the Riemann invariants and modified Rankine--Hugoniot conditions. These expressions help characterize the Mach expansion and Mach reflection phenomena of bent and reverse bent solitons. We also derive analytical formulas for the critical angle and the Mach stem amplitude, showing that as the soliton speed is in the vicinity of unity, the results from the BL equation align closely with those of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili (KP) equation. Corresponding numerical results are obtained and show excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, as a far-field approximation for the forced BL equation -- which models wave and flow interactions with local topography -- the modulation equations yield a slowly varying similarity solution. This solution indicates that the precursor wavefronts created by topography moving at subcritical or critical speeds take the shape of a circular arc, in contrast to the parabolic wavefronts observed in the forced KP equation.

Abstract:The propagation and runup of the double solitary waves propagating in water of constant depth and climbing along a plane slope are studied experimentally and numerically. Well-designed run-up experiment and numerical simulation of double solitary waves are carried out. Time series of the surface elevation and waterline movement, are obtained. With regard to double solitary waves with same height, the runup amplification coefficient of the latter wave is less than that of the leading one when the relative wave crest distance is reduced to a certain threshold value. The detailed velocity field and energy budget are obtained using the numerical model and discussed in terms of characteristics of velocity field at the runup process of the double solitary waves.
On a New Type of Solitary Surface Waves in Finite Water Depth

Abstract:In this paper, a new type of solitary surface waves in a finite water depth is found by analytically solving the fully nonlinear wave equations. Using a new type of base functions which decays exponentially in the horizontal direction, this new type of solitary surface waves is gained first by means of linear wave equations, and then confirmed by the fully nonlinear wave equations. The new type of solitary surface waves have many unusual characteristics. First, it has a peaked crest. Secondly, it may be in the form of depression, which has been often reported for internal solitary waves but never for free-surface solitary ones, to the best of author’s knowledge. Third, its phase speed has nothing to do with wave height, say, the peaked solitary waves are non-dispersive. Finally, its horizontal velocity at bottom is always larger than that on surface. All of these are so different from the traditional periodic and solitary waves that they clearly indicate the novelty of the peaked solitary waves. Based on the new peaked solitary surface waves, a new explanation to the so-called rogue waves and some theoretical predictions are given. All of these are helpful to deepen our understandings and enrich our knowledge about solitary waves.

Abstract:<p>The variable-coefficient modified Gardner equation is proposed to describe large amplitude internal solitary waves (ISWs) propagating over slope-shelf topography. The model is adapted from weakly nonlinear Gardner equation by adjusting its original coefficients such that the model is capable of representing the crucial characteristics of large amplitude ISWs, including the effective wavelength and wave speed. To numerically solve the nonlinear equation, the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is applied for temporal discretization, second-order central finite difference numerical scheme is implemented for the space discretization and the iterative scheme is applied to treat the coupling term of time and space. The numerical method is then verified by comparing fairly with laboratory experiments. It's found the variable-coefficient modified Gardner model is a reliable theoretical tool to describe the behavior of large amplitude internal solitary waves passing through bottom topography.</p>

Abstract:Multiple solitons in a water trough resonator are observed to organize into some ordered and symmetrical one-dimensional patterns that can exhibit spatiotemporal oscillations at certain excitations of the system. Experimental details including the ordering rules for the generations of stable multisoliton chains are described, and the phenomena are numerically simulated with the parametrically driven, damped nonlinear Schrodinger equation.

Abstract:Previous experiments have shown that the onset to chaos would occur at points outside the stability region of the hydrodynamic nonpropagating soliton generated in a Faraday’s oscillating water tank driven harmonically [Wei et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 88, 469–472 (1990)]. The purpose of the present paper will put emphasis for the first time on the study of the same phenomenon which occurred inside the stability region for those states that have strong stability. The present experiment is conducted in a rectangular water tank driven harmonically at (0,1) mode. Some observations include a single soliton in a very short tank, a double soliton, and a multisoliton, etc. Some porous materials were used at both ends of the tank to quench undesired resonant modes. For several tanks 10–35 cm long and 3 cm wide filled with water to a depth of 2 cm, a typical set of frequency spectrums have been obtained which show the transition from simple periodic to bifurcate, even to chaotic state intermittently. This experiment gives additional support to the idea that the chaos is out of order and the soliton is a form of order out of the potential chaos. Abstract:A theoretical model for interaction of a submerged moving body with the conjugate flow in a three-layer fluid is proposed to depict the internal flat solitary wave, which is observed in experiments conducted by the present authors. A set of coupled nonlinear algebraic equations is derived for the interfacial displacements. The numerical results indicate that (a) the conjugate flow clue to a two-dimensional body moving at the bottom possesses an apparent behaviour with two convex interfaces; (b) the solution satisfying the existence criterion is always unique near the relatively stable state of system. Theoretical analysis is qualitatively consistent with the experimental results obtained.

Abstract:The self-consistent spatiotemporal evolution of a drift-wave (DW) radial envelope and a zonal-flow (ZF) amplitude is investigated in a slab model. The stationary solution of the coupled partial differential equations in a simple limit yields the formation of DW-ZF soliton structures, which propagate radially with speed depending on the envelope peak amplitude. Additional interesting physics, e.g., the generation, destruction, collision, and reflection of solitons, as well as turbulence bursting can also be observed due to the effects of linear growth or damping, dissipation, equilibrium nonuniformities and soliton dynamics. The propagation of soliton causes significant radial spreading of DW turbulence and therefore can affect transport scaling with the system size by broadening of the turbulent region. The correspondence of the present analysis with the description of DW-ZF interactions in toroidal geometry is also discussed.

Abstract:In this research, we focus on some novel exact solutions of the new (2 + 1)-dimensional shallow water wave equation (SWWE). First, the soliton molecules on the (x,y)-, (x,t)- and (y,t)-planes are constructed via assigning the velocity resonance conditions to the multiple soliton solutions (MSSs) that can be derived via the Hirota method. Second, the periodic wave solutions are explored by means of the new homoclinic approach. Finally, the other diverse wave solutions including the kink wave, singular wave and the singular periodic wave solutions are also plumbed by the sub-equation approach (SEA). The dynamic performances of the extracted solutions are presented graphically to unveil the nonlinear physical characteristics. As we know, the extracted solutions in this paper are all new and have not been investigated in other literature, which can help us make sense of the nonlinear dynamics of the new (2 + 1)-dimensional SWWE better.
