Abstract:Recently,a class of bipolar pulses is of great interest to the lightning community because their associated powerful VHF radiation is the source of satelliteobserved TIPPs(Trans-Ionosphere Pulse Pairs) which are an order stronger than that of normal lightning discharges. In the present paper we report the measurements of 78 such events observed in Shanghai.Typical narrow bipolar pulses are characterized in waveforms by a sharp rise of 1.2 μs,an initial peak width of 2-3 μs,and a total duration of about 15 μs.These pulses are comparable to the initial return strokes of ground flashes in strength and the overshoot is about one third of the initial peak. Two delayed reflections of the pulse from the ionosphere and Earth surface are utilized here to estimate the source height by assuming the ionosphere top of 85 km.Among 11 negative pulses(it is defined here that discharge between an upper negative charge region and a lower positive charge region produces the electric field of negative polarity),10 occurred at altitudes between 14.0 and 16.0 km above MSL,and one at the breakdown stage of a ground flash at the height of about 6.4 km.67 positive pulses occurred at altitudes between 7 and 12 km above MSL,with a mean of 9.4 km.Calculations indicate that these pulses might be produced by the current moment of the order of 5 kA·km,and took about 1 μs to reach the top of the channel.we conclude that the discharge involves a spatial extent of 100-300 m,a peak current of 20 kA in order, and a current traveling velocity of 108 m/s in order.
