Abstract:Recycling and reusing of wastewater from diversified industries by adopting a simple dynamic of process intensification (PI) has emerged as a promising development route for the chemical process industry due to its potential to offer innovative and sustainable alternatives. This review article briefs about the routes for recycling wastewater by various processes and separation techniques which can be implemented at different scales such as the phenomena scale and the task scale. Recent trends in process intensification have highlighted the importance of widespread adoption of membrane-based processes for cost savings, its compactness, energy efficiency, and modularity and sustainable operation. Various intensifying approaches such as membrane-based, reactive separations, hybrid separations, intensification of various types of membrane systems, including liquid, vapor and gas separation steps like pervaporation, and vapor permeation, while covering wide ranges of their operations and other processes for wastewater treatment are presented in this review article. In broad sense as per the literature the advantages of PI in the sense of industrial application include: cost reduction, increased safety, reduced emissions and environmental footprints, and improved resource efficiency by using energy and water resources more efficiently. Overall, the current manuscript provides a comprehensive overview of recycling and reusing steps by using process intensification route from an engineering perspective with a focused strategy on the membrane-based techniques in a sustainable strategy using a hybrid and integrated technology. Keywords: Hybrid Separation, Pervaporation, membrane distillation, Nanofiltration-Electrodialysis, Process intensification.
