Abstract:The adjacent vertex-distinguishing total chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\chi_{at}(G)$, is the smallest $k$ for which $G$ has a proper total $k$-coloring such that any two adjacent vertices have distinct sets of colors appearing on the vertex and its incident edges. In regard of this number, there is a famous conjecture (AVDTCC) which states that for any simple graph $G$, $\chi_{at}(G) \leq \Delta(G)+3$. In this paper, we study this number for the generalized Mycielski graph $\mu_m(G)$ of a graph $G$. We prove that the satisfiability of the conjecture AVDTCC in $G$ implies its satisfiability in $\mu_m(G)$. Particularly we give the exact values of $\chi_{at}(\mu_m(G))$ when $G$ is a graph with maximum degree less than $3$ or a complete graph. Moreover, we investigate $\chi_{at}(G)$ for any graph $G$ with only one maximum degree vertex by showing that $\chi_{at}(G) \leq \Delta(G)+2$ when $\Delta(G) \leq 4$.
Vertex-distinguishing and sum-distinguishing edge coloring of regular graphs

Abstract:Given an integer $k\ge1$, an edge-$k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is an assignment of $k$ colors $1,\ldots,k$ to the edges of $G$ such that no two adjacent edges receive the same color. A vertex-distinguishing (resp. sum-distinguishing) edge-$k$-coloring of $G$ is an edge-$k$-coloring such that for any two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$, the set (resp. sum) of colors taken from all the edges incident with $u$ is different from that taken from all the edges incident with $v$. The vertex-distinguishing chromatic index (resp. sum-distinguishing chromatic index), denoted $\chi'_{vd}(G)$ (resp. $\chi'_{sd}(G)$), is the smallest value $k$ such that $G$ has a vertex-distinguishing-edge-$k$-coloring (resp. sum-distinguishing-edge-$k$-coloring). Let $G$ be a $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices, where $n$ is even and sufficiently large. We show that $\chi'_{vd}(G) =d+2$ if $d$ is arbitrarily close to $n/2$ from above, and $\chi'_{sd}(G) =d+2$ if $d\ge \frac{2n}{3}$. Our first result strengthens a result of Balister et al. in 2004 for such class of regular graphs, and our second result constitutes a significant advancement in the field of sum-distinguishing edge coloring. To achieve these results, we introduce novel edge coloring results which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let G be a simple graph. A total coloring f of G is called an E-total coloring if no two adjacent vertices of G receive the same color, and no edge of G receives the same color as one of its endpoints. For an E-total coloring f of a graph G and any vertex u of G let C f (u) or C(u) denote the set of colors of vertex u and of the edges incident to u. We call C(u) the color set of u. If C(u) ≠ C(v) for any two different vertices u and v of V(G) then we say that f is a vertex-distinguishing E-total coloring of G or a VDET coloring of G for short. The minimum number of colors required for a VDET coloring of G is denoted by ${\chi_{vt}^e(G)}$ and is called the VDET chromatic number of G. In this paper, we find the VDET chromatic number for some special families of graphs, such as the path P n , the cycle C n , the complete bipartite graphs K 1, n and K 2, n the complete graph K n , and wheels and fans, and we also propose a related conjecture.

Abstract:In 1971, Tomescu conjectured [Le nombre des graphes connexes $k$-chromatiques minimaux aux sommets étiquetés, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 273 (1971), 1124--1126] that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $\chi(G) = k \geq 4$ has at most $k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ $k$-colourings, where equality holds if and only if the graph is formed from $K_k$ by repeatedly adding leaves. In this note we prove (a strengthening of) the conjecture of Tomescu when $k=5$.

Abstract:A total coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of its vertices and edges such that adjacent or incident vertices and edges are not colored with the same color. A total $[k]$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a total coloring of $G$ by using the color set $[k]=\{1,2,\ldots ,k\}$. Let $f(v)$ denote the sum of the colors of a vertex $v$ and the colors of all incident edges of $v$. A total $[k]$-neighbor sum distinguishing-coloring of $G$ is a total $[k]$-coloring of $G$ such that for each edge $uv\in E(G)$, $f(u)\ne f(v)$. Let $G$ be a graph which can be embedded in a surface of nonnegative Euler characteristic. In this paper, it is proved that the total neighbor sum distinguishing chromatic number of $G$ is $\Delta (G)+2$ if $\Delta (G)\ge 14$, where $\Delta (G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$.
On the multicolor Turán conjecture for color-critical graphs

Abstract:A {\it simple $k$-coloring} of a multigraph $G$ is a decomposition of the edge multiset as a disjoint sum of $k$ simple graphs which are referred as colors. A subgraph $H$ of a multigraph $G$ is called {\it multicolored} if its edges receive distinct colors in a given simple $k$-coloring of $G$. In 2004, Keevash-Saks-Sudakov-Verstraëte introduced the {\it $k$-color Turán number} $ex_k(n,H)$, which denotes the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex multigraph that has a simple $k$-coloring containing no multicolored copies of $H$. They made a conjecture for any $r\geq 3$ and $r$-color-critical graph $H$ that in the range of $k\geq \frac{r-1}{r-2}(e(H)-1)$, if $n$ is sufficiently large, then $ex_k(n, H)$ is achieved by the multigraph consisting of $k$ colors all of which are identical copies of the Turán graph $T_{r-1}(n)$. In this paper, we show that this holds in the range of $k\geq 2\frac{r-1}{r}(e(H)-1)$, significantly improving earlier results. Our proof combines the stability argument of Chakraborti-Kim-Lee-Liu-Seo with a novel graph packing technique for embedding multigraphs.

Abstract:Analyzing chromatic number in coloring problem is a tough topic in graph analysis. We focus on the basic theory for a particular type of chromatic number. This will give us insights on the basic topological structure guiding lots of networks in the coming trend of big data era. An adjacent vertex-distinguishing total k-coloring is a proper total k-coloring of a graph G such that for any two adjacent vertices, the set of colors appearing on the vertex and its incident edges are different. The smallest k for which such a coloring of G exists is called the adjacent vertex-distinguishing total chromatic number, and denoted by ?at(G). It has been proved that if the graph G satisfies ?(G)=3, then ?at(G)= 6. However, it is very difficult to determine whether ?at(G)= 5. In this paper, we focus on a special class of 3-regular graphs, the generalized Petersen graphs P(n, k), and show that ?at(P(n, k)) = 5, which improves the bound ?at (P(n, k))= 6.
A note on graphs of $k$-colourings

Abstract:For a graph $G$, the $k$-colouring graph of $G$ has vertices corresponding to proper $k$-colourings of $G$ and edges between colourings that differ at a single vertex. The graph supports the Glauber dynamics Markov chain for $k$-colourings, and has been extensively studied from both extremal and probabilistic perspectives. In this note, we show that for every graph $G$, there exists $k$ such that $G$ is uniquely determined by its $k$-colouring graph, confirming two conjectures of Asgarli, Krehbiel, Levinson and Russell. We further show that no finite family of generalised chromatic polynomials for $G$, which encode induced subgraph counts of its colouring graphs, uniquely determine $G$.

Total coloring graphs with large maximum degree

Abstract:We prove that for any graph $G$, the total chromatic number of $G$ is at most $\Delta(G)+2\left\lceil \frac{|V(G)|}{\Delta(G)+1} \right\rceil$. This saves one color in comparison with a result of Hind from 1992. In particular, our result says that if $\Delta(G)\ge \frac{1}{2}|V(G)|$, then $G$ has a total coloring using at most $\Delta(G)+4$ colors. When $G$ is regular and has a sufficient number of vertices, we can actually save an additional two colors. Specifically, we prove that for any $0<\varepsilon <1$, there exists $n_0\in \mathbb{N}$ such that: if $G$ is an $r$-regular graph on $n \ge n_0$ vertices with $r\ge \frac{1}{2}(1+\varepsilon) n$, then $\chi_T(G) \le \Delta(G)+2$. This confirms the Total Coloring Conjecture for such graphs $G$.

Abstract:Given a multigraph, suppose that each vertex is given a local assignment of k colours to its incident edges. We are interested in whether there is a choice of one local colour per vertex such that no edge has both of its local colours chosen. The least k for which this is always possible given any set of local assignments we call the single-conflict chromatic number of the graph. This parameter is closely related to separation choosability and adaptable choosability. We show that single-conflict chromatic number of simple graphs embeddable on a surface of Euler genus g is O ( g 1 ∕ 4 log g ) as g → ∞ . This is sharp up to the logarithmic factor.

Abstract:Inspired by the phenomenon of co-channel interference in communication network, a novel graph parameter, called $r$-vertex-strongly-distinguishing total coloring (abbreviate as $D(r)$-VSDTC), is proposed in this paper. Given a graph $G$, an $r$-VSDTC is an assignment of $k$ colors to $V(G)\cup E(G)$ such that any two adjacent or incident elements receive different colors and any two vertices with distance at most $r$ have distinct color-set, where the color-set of a vertex $u$ is the set of colors assigned on $u$ and its neighborhoods and incident edges. The \emph{$r$-vertex-strongly-distinguishing total chromatic number} of $G$, denoted by $\chi_{r-vsdt}(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ for which $G$ admits a $k$-$D(r)$-VSDTC. We show that $\chi_{1-vsdt}(G)\leq 4\Delta(G)$ for every graph $G$ without isolated edges and $\chi_{1-vsdt}(G)\le k\Delta(G)+3$ for a $k$-degenerated graph $G$ without isolated edges, where $1\le k\le 3$.

Abstract:Let G be a vertex-colored graph. We call a vertex cut S of G a monochromatic vertex cut if the vertices of S are colored with the same color. The graph G is monochromatically vertex-disconnected if any two nonadjacent vertices of G has a monochromatic vertex cut separating them. The monochromatic vertex-disconnection number of G, denoted by mvd(G), is the maximum number of colors that are used to make G monochromatically vertex-disconnected. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to compute mvd(G) and give an mvd-coloring of the graph G. We run this algorithm with an example written in Java. The main part of the code is shown in Appendix B and the complete code is given on Github: <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://github.com/fumiaoT/mvd-coloring.git" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>. Secondly, inspired by the previous localization principle, we obtain a upper bound of mvd(G) for some special classes of graphs. In addition, when mvd(G) is large and all blocks of G are minimally 2-connected triangle-free graphs, we characterize G. On these bases, we show that any graph whose blocks are all minimally 2-connected graphs of small order, can be computed mvd(G) and given an mvd-coloring in polynomial time.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we consider those graphs that have maximum degree at least 1/ k times their order, where k is a (small) positive integer. A result of Hajnal and Szemerédi concerning equitable vertex‐colorings and an adaptation of the standard proof of Vizing's Theorem are used to show that if the maximum degree of a graph G satisfies Δ( G ) ≥ | V ( G )/ k , then X ″( G ) ≤ Δ( G ) + 2 k + 1. This upper bound is an improvement on the currently available upper bounds for dense graphs having large order.

Abstract:For a graph $G$ and an integer $k\geq 2$, a $\chi'_{k}$-coloring of $G$ is an edge coloring of $G$ such that the subgraph induced by the edges of each color has all degrees congruent to $1 ~ (\mod k)$, and $\chi'_{k}(G)$ is the minimum number of colors in a $\chi'_{k}$-coloring of $G$. In ["The mod $k$ chromatic index of graphs is $O(k)$", J. Graph Theory. 2023; 102: 197-200], Botler, Colucci and Kohayakawa proved that $\chi'_{k}(G)\leq 198k-101$ for every graph $G$. In this paper, we show that $\chi'_{k}(G) \leq 177k-93$.

Abstract:We consider proper edge colorings of a graph G using colors of the set {1,…,k}. Such a coloring is called neighbor sum distinguishing if for any uv∈E(G), the sum of colors of the edges incident to u is different from the sum of the colors of the edges incident to v. The smallest value of k in such a coloring of G is denoted by ndiΣ(G). Let mad(G) and Δ(G) denote the maximum average degree and the maximum degree of a graph G, respectively. In this paper we show that, for a graph G without isolated edges, if mad(G)<83, then ndiΣ(G)≤max{Δ(G)+1,7}; and if mad(G)<3, then ndiΣ(G)≤max{Δ(G)+2,7}.

Abstract:A local k-coloring of a graph G is a function f:V(G)→{1,2,⋯,k} such that for each S⊆V(G), 2≤|S|≤3, there exist u,v∈S with |f(u)−f(v)| at least the size of the subgraph induced by S. The local chromatic number of G is χℓ(G)=min⁡{k:G has a local k-coloring}. Chartrand et al. [2] asked: does there exist a graph Gk such that χℓ(Gk)=χ(Gk)=k? Furthermore, they conjectured that for every positive integer k, there exists a graph Gk with χℓ(G)=k such that every local k-coloring of Gk uses all of the colors 1,2,⋯,k. In this paper we give a affirmative answer to the problem and confirm the conjecture.

Abstract:A path in a vertex-colored graph is called a \emph{vertex-monochromatic path} if its internal vertices have the same color. A vertex-coloring of a graph is a \emph{monochromatic vertex-connection coloring} (\emph{MVC-coloring} for short), if there is a vertex-monochromatic path joining any two vertices in the graph. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{monochromatic vertex-connection number}, denoted by $mvc(G)$, is defined to be the maximum number of colors used in an \emph{MVC-coloring} of $G$. These concepts of vertex-version are natural generalizations of the colorful monochromatic connectivity of edge-version, introduced by Caro and Yuster. In this paper, we mainly investigate the Erdős-Gallai-type problems for the monochromatic vertex-connection number $mvc(G)$ and completely determine the exact value. Moreover, the Nordhaus-Gaddum-type inequality for $mvc(G)$ is also given.

Abstract:The recursive maximal planar graphs can be obtained from K4, by embedding a 3-vertex in a triangular face continuously. A total k-coloring of a graph G is a coloring of its vertices and edges such that no two adjacent or incident elements receive the same color. The Total Coloring Conjecture, in short, TCC, states that every simple graph G is totally (Δ+2)-colorable, where Δ is the maximum degree of G. In this paper, we prove that TCC holds for recursive maximal planar graphs, especially, a main class of recursive maximal planar graphs, named (2,2)-recursive maximal planar graphs, are totally (Δ+1)-colorable. Moreover, we give linear time algorithms for total coloring of recursive maximal planar graphs and (2,2)-recursive maximal planar graphs, respectively.

Abstract:A graph G is uniquely k-colourable if the chromatic number of G is k and G has only one k-colouring up to permutation of the colours. Aksionov [On uniquely 3-colorable planar graphs, Discrete Math. 20 (1977), pp. 209-216] conjectured that every uniquely 3-colourable planar graph with at least four vertices has two adjacent triangles. However, in the same year, Melnikov and Steinberg [L.S. Mel'nikov and R. Steinberg, One counter example for two conjectures on three coloring, Discrete Math. 20 (1977), pp. 203-206.] disproved the conjecture by constructing a counterexample. In this paper, we prove that if a uniquely 3-colourable planar graph G has at most 4 triangles then G has two adjacent triangles. Furthermore, for any k > 5, we construct a uniquely 3-colourable planar graph with k triangles and without adjacent triangles.
