Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the Internet usage status among Chinese college students and how personal differences impact students' online activities. Quantitative research was employed and the findings were descriptive in nature. Results showed that the majority (80%) of participating Zhejiang University (ZJU) students (n=596) currently owned PCs. On an average, ZJU students spent 3.11 hrs per day using computer, within which 2.51 hrs with online activities. The main purposes of their online activities were study, communication and entertainment. Most ZJU students participated in nine of the fifteen listed online activities frequently. Half of students used study related websites and browsed online programs frequently. Only 39% used major related websites frequently. Most students did not think that they: 1) used English websites frequently; 2) used Internet to communicate with teachers frequently; or 3) knew how to make web page. Gender and other five factors had different impact on students' different online activities.

Abstract:The present study investigates Chinese EFL learners’ use of articles in an oral test. The material used in this study was the transcripts of the performance of 60 second-year Chinese English majors in the 2001 TEM-4 oral test, which were taken from the Spoken English Corpus of Chinese Learners. The analyses of the article used by the learners reveal the following findings: Chinese EFL learners as a whole can use articles fairly well in the oral English test situation, but there are considerable variations within the learners. The accuracy rate of article use in oral performance is much higher than that in the article knowledge test. The accuracy rates of the three kinds of articles show that the learners use the definite article best, the zero article worst, and the indefinite article in between. The omission of the/a(n) and the overuse of the are the two major problems the learners have when using articles. The learners seldom monitor article use in their oral performance.

Abstract:This is a corpus-based study of errors of English non-finite verbs committed by Chinese college non-English major learners.In the study,the error frequencies of English non-finite verbs between two sub-corpora of CLEC have been compared.Through classification and analysis,the sources of errors of English non-finite verbs have been found out,which include hypercorrection,false analogy,misanalysis,literal translation and teacher talk.

Abstract:Scholars have conducted research on the errors made by language learners in writing both theoretically and practically, and they have made considerable breakthroughs in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) with respect of writing. The learners’ use of articles in English writing displays a certain pattern with factors such as influence from a learner’s mother language, personal idiosyncracy or common misunderstanding. Thus it is feasible to judge whether an article is used correctly in a certain context on a rule basis. This paper adopts a rule-based method, which lets the computer learn how to use articles from empirical sources and automatic correct the Definite Article Redundancy Errors (DAREs) committed by students in their English compositions. With the help of both grammatical and contextual information, the rules in our system are deduced from authentic examples and possess authority and accuracy. The system also allows teachers to add or alter these rules flexibly by either examining the actual cases or updating their professional knowledge as they wish. By doing this, we hope the quality and efficiency of marking compositions in Chinese colleges will be improved.
Variation of Nonstandard English Articles Among Chinese Speakers of English

Abstract:Article use is highly variable and known as a cause of frequent problems among nonnative speakers of English. This study investigated the variation of article omission and overuse in academic writing among Chinese speakers of English. The researcher collected 188 short class reflection essays and used variable rule analysis to analyze them. The quantitative findings revealed that countable plural nouns favored the the omission. Also, NPs assumed to be known to the hearer and in the initial clause position favored a/an omission. NPs assumed to be known by the hearer favored overuse of the for zero articles. These results indicated that universal discourse property, L1 transfer, and information structure influenced article variation as the patterns were systematic rather than chaotic. The study concludes that variable rule analysis could provide interlanguage variation studies with valuable insights. Using the results, practitioners will be better equipped to understand why nonstandard articles occur. They will also be able to direct their learners' attention to the relationship between influential factors and nonstandard uses, increasing the learners' awareness of how to use articles correctly.

Abstract:What matters for a learner of English for academic purposes is to possess the ability to present results and achievements in international top journals. The ability is related to degrees of informality, vocabulary richness, and lexical complexity in academic writing. This study takes Chinese master degree candidates and advanced writers as research objects and concentrates on two research questions: (1) To what extent do Chinese master degree candidates and advanced writers differ in the use of informal features in their writings? (2) In what ways do Chinese master degree candidates and advanced writers differ in vocabulary choices? The results are based on studying two datasets of the research objects. However, our results show that there is a complex picture for each informality indicator. Finally yet importantly, advanced writers show a higher level of vocabulary richness and complexity.

Abstract:This study aims to examine 40 Chinese English majors’ use of locative prepositions in English writing. The students were randomly selected from the English department of a private university in Fujian, China. They were first informed of the purpose of the study, followed by being required to participate in an English writing activity. Through the analysis of the collected 40 writing samples, the researchers of the study discovered that the prepositions “on”, “in” and “by” are the most frequently used in the participants’ writing; the prepositions “above”, “under” and “among” are the least frequently used. The locative preposition “in” has the highest frequency of use and also has the highest error frequency. Moreover, the error types that occur in the 40 Chinese college students’ use of prepositions (including locative prepositions) in English writing mainly include preposition redundancy, preposition omission, and misuse of prepositions.

Abstract:Writing skill is essential in English learning.The present thesis makes an attempt to explore the universal features of English coordinators in argumentative essays of the students in Pre-departure Training Department of BLCU.This is accomplished by conducting a contrastive analysis between the native speaker corpus and a self-built corpus based on the computerized corpora and database software tools.It will also find the difference and the degree of difference between the two corpora.And,it will be detecting the problems behind these performances and the relevant causes,while offering some corresponding solutions from the qualitative perspective.The study turns out that the Chinese English learners misuseand overuse English coordinators to a certain extent in the writing of argumentative essays compared with the native English speakers,which is mainly attributed to such factors as:language transfer,overgeneralization,the lack of the awareness of stylistic and different ways of thinking between eastern and western people.

Abstract:With the advancements in science and technology, the learning methods of college students, especially college foreign language learners, are constantly evolving. The rapid development of Internet technology and artificial intelligence software has contributed to the diversification of students' learning modes. Nowadays, mobile-assisted language learning based on application software and network platform is gradually becoming an important mode for foreign language students. Considering the rapid update and iteration of mobile applications and the popularity of novel artificial intelligence technologies such as ChatGPT, this study aims to explore the current situation of English major students' usage of English learning tools, investigate the specific method of using different software, and briefly analyze their advantages and disadvantages in combination with pedagogical theories. The research combines quantitative and qualitative research patterns, with questionnaires and interviews as the main operating methods. The main participants were 34 students from Shandong Universitys Class of 2020, majoring in English oriented in business. The finding suggests that contemporary English majors have a high use rate of English learning tools, mainly focusing on online learning platforms, artificial intelligence technology and dictionary apps; However, the number of users of exam-oriented apps and oral communication software is relatively small. According to the analysis of corresponding pedagogy theories, those learning tools based on constructivism are more popular than the software based on behaviorism. Moreover, a small minority of software are not favored by students because of their own limitations. It is important to note that our study has some limitations, in terms of small sample size and restricting to English major students. Future research should involve a more diverse sample to better understand the impact of the various English learning tools on students critical thinking skills.

Abstract:Message-oriented element plays the role of content expression and information transmission.This study focuses on the message-oriented elements in college non-English majors' oral English in the COLSEC,the results have indicated that the students of different proficiency groups have differences in the overall discourse contribution and in the use of the message-oriented elements,and that the students have inadequate use of communicative strategies.It has thus been concluded that our teaching of spoken English could benefit from shifting its focus from on single-word centered approach to word chunks and use of organizational strategies.

Abstract:This study,based on corpora and a cognitive framework,investigates the use of the English preposition in by the Chinese EFL learners.It generates the following findings: 1) Chinese EFL learners overuse in,particularly those with the core meaning,those with the simple metaphorical meaning and those in set phrases and idioms;2) Compared with native speakers,Chinese students underuse those with more extended metaphorical meanings;the in-phrases and in-idioms used are significantly less varied than those used by the native students;3) the error rate of Chinese EFL students is not high except when the learners use in to express more extended metaphorical meaning.As the learners' English proficiency improved,the error rate gets obviously lower.

Abstract:This article reports on a study that investigates how Chinese-speaking learners of English acquire the English third person singular agreement marker -s and the copular/auxiliary is. The results show that the learners had a better mastery of is than -s as well as the present tense irregular verbs has and does. Factors predicting accurate use of the zero article in oral English:A study of tertiary-level Chinese EFL learners

Abstract:This paper reports on a study of factors that are capable of predicting accuracy of the zero article use by Chinese EFL learners. The data were taken from the Spoken English Corpus of Chinese Learners. An examination of the predicting power of seven factors shows that, overall, accuracy of the zero article use is better predicted by the language-ability-related factors than by the noun-phrase-related factors. Among the noun-phrase-related factors, the semantic factors possess less significant predicting power than the syntactic factors. Five factors have been identified to significantly correlate with accurate use of the zero article. They are the NP structure, the NP position, the semantic function, learners’ oral fluency and accuracy in using the past tense, among which the semantic function and the past tense accuracy exhibit positive correlation whereas the NP structure, the NP position and oral fluency demonstrate negative correlation.

Abstract:This paper first presents in rather detail the project of a survey on the problems existing in English writing.The data are collected from 537 Chinese students of three colleges.The survey was conducted following Hasan's theory of Generic Structure Potential.The result confirms our hypothesis that Chinese college students do not have strong genre awareness apart from having problems in lexis,grammar and other aspects.This strengthens our belief that students need to start writing at the discourse level and to be exposed to more practical genres,and that both teachers and students need particularly to build up genre awareness.

Abstract:This study describes the natural dictionary-using behaviors of a group of first-year English majors at Fudan University, Shanghai. It aims to gain some insights into how Chinese students as competent English learners actually use and view their dictionaries in the highly digitalized era, as well as the most common problems they encounter in finding contextual meanings for the looked-up words and the possible causes. The students were set a dictionary consultation assignment which was a near replication of Nesi and Haill’s (Int J Lexicogr 15(4):277–305, 2002 ) study of the dictionary-using habits of international students at a British university. Observations are made on what types of dictionaries and which dictionaries these Chinese students normally use, revealing a general tendency among the students to use multiple dictionaries in the digital medium. The outcomes of dictionary consultation are closely examined to map out the dictionary look-up patterns by the Chinese students and to identify various look-up problems. The findings demonstrate a preference of reading L1 translations over L2 definitions for the looked-up word, certain unrealistic expectations for L1 translations offered in the dictionaries, and the consequent difficulty experienced in identifying the dictionary sub-entry appropriate for the word’s contextual meaning. Also manifest is the growing confidence of a younger generation of dictionary users regarding the critical opinions they have formed of dictionaries despite a minimum exposure to dictionary teaching. These firsthand data on dictionary use under natural conditions will also be applied in the design of an introductory course on lexicography for undergraduates at the English department, Fudan University.
A Corpus-Based Study on the Semantic Use of Reporting Verbs in English Majors’ Undergraduate Thesis Writing

Abstract:This study aims to add further pedagogical knowledge on students’ academic writing by investigating the semantic patterns of reporting verbs (RVs) in L1 Chinese undergraduate English majors’ theses in a southern Chinese university based on the semantic categories by Hunston et al. (1996) and Charles (2006a). A comparative analysis was conducted across L2 and L1 students’ academic writing in the discipline of applied linguistics. The study yielded two major findings: 1) there was a significantly insufficient employment of RVs in general, particularly among three categories (Argue, Show, Find) by L2 students, who also presented a strong reliance on argumentation by intuition; 2) L2 students illustrated a restricted vocabulary repertoire of colloquial RVs and their usage of RVs was misrepresented in context, diverging from the intended rhetorical functions. These findings indicate that evidence-based argumentative writing practice and targeted lexical and rhetorical instructions on vocabulary knowledge require further promotion in L2 English learners’ academic writing training.

Abstract:This article explores Chinese university students' ability to differentiate between different English accents, their learning preferences, and attitudes towards different accents using a combination of qualitative (questionnaires and interviews) and quantitative (subjective projection tests) methods.Additionally, the study examines differences in accent evaluation among students with varying majors and educational levels.The results show that students generally have a strong comprehension of both local and standard English variants, and their learning preferences are affected by factors such as their major, learning motivation, and practicality.Overall, students have a positive attitude towards the nine English variants studied, with English majors having a higher evaluation of non-standard English variants compared to non-English majors.Graduate students tend to have higher requirements for the authority and formality of English variants.This research is significant in enriching the theoretical knowledge of future English variants in China, promoting respect and tolerance for English accent diversity among Chinese university students, and advancing English teaching construction in China.
