Abstract:Under the background of the new curriculum reform,the orientations of educational periodicals remain as they were.According to the reform,the writing and publishing of research papers on teaching is an important index of the professional development of basic-education staff,and so educational periodicals should play a part,as they used to,in facilitating the teacher development.At present,most of the educational periodicals meant for primary and secondary school teachers adhere to the basic principle of practicality in accepting contributions,which involves three priorities,i.e.: "priority of micro-over macro-study","priority of direct over indirect study" and "priority of general over particular study".It is,therefore,quite necessary to help primary and secondary school teachers to understand this practicality intention of the educational periodicals.The intention can be addressed from four perspectives,namely,"problem-solving","comparison","generalization" and "innovation";while each of the four perspectives covers its own connotation of practicality,they share the same purpose of providing insight to the teachers and facilitating the latter's professional development via the study of teaching.

Abstract:We are about to publish in the Routledge Editor's Choice series a collection called The Philosophy, Methodology and Pedagogy of Collective Writing. This collection of collections represents the development of the philosophy, methodology and pedagogy of collective writing as it informs members of the Editors' Collective (EC) who also edit, write, review and contribute to Educational Philosophy and Theory (EPAT) and also now to PESA Agora (<a class="ext-link" href="https://pesaagora.com/">https://pesaagora.com/</a>, Editor: Tina Besley) and Access (<a class="ext-link" href="https://pesaagora.com/access-journal/">https://pesaagora.com/access-journal/</a>, Editor: Nina Hood), two 'journals' recently developed by PESA members of EC. In my thinking as the editor of EPAT for over twenty years, I have been concerned with the narrowness of the status of the academic article and the conventions that tightly structure it as a product of industrial culture. Not much has changed in the form of the academic article in the last twenty-five years. If anything, the conventions have hardened and solidified. I have been interested in experimenting with the journal and the academic article, which in the humanities and social sciences still tends to emulate to old model of the lonely scholar operating on their own – an individual author responsible for 'research' who publishes an article of six to seven thousand words with abstract, keywords, introduction, analysis or argument, often methodology, results and conclusion. Copyright is generally signed over to a publisher, and the article, once published after blind peer review, ends up in a journal that then becomes the basis for tenure or promotion in a 'publish or perish' culture. It's a system that drains every last drop of creativity from academic writing forced to focus on the phenomenon of pure information or data. After the digitisation of publishing that occurred in the 1990s academic journals began to offer new possibilities for publishing formats, different distributive forms of collaboration, new multiple forms of collective authorship and also new forms of open review.

Abstract:Ruyu HungNational Chiayi University, TaiwanThis is a collective writing experiment of PESA members, orchestrating the Philosophy of Education in a New Key regarding East Asia. In 2016 the pioneering article 'Towards a philosophy of academic publishing' (Peters et al., 2016) was published. It sheds a new light on collective writing that can make great contribution to the academia by creating 'new knowledge ecologies and the global ecosystem of scholarly communication'. By the experiment of collective writing, novel and interesting works are produced, including: 'Antipodean Theory for Educational Research' (Stewart et al., 2017), 'Ten theses on the shift from (Static) Text to (Moving) Image' (Peters et al., 2018a), 'Is Peer Review in Academic Publishing still working?' (Jackson et al., 2018), and 'Experimenting with academic subjectivity: collective writing, peer production and collective intelligence' (Peters et al., 2019). In the year of 2020, the project of the collective writing on the theme 'Philosophy of education in a new key' (Peters, 2020) was launched to explore possibilities of thinking philosophy of education through collective efforts and intelligence. Its leading tone 'Harmonic Cadence' (Peters, 2020) means that the new field for philosophy of education in the times of the post-truth world (Peters et al., 2018b) is open for more participation and partaking. 'The Philosophy of Education in a New Key: East Asia', the collectively written piece by East Asian scholars, aims to answer to the call of the 'Harmonic Cadence' by introducing East Asian sagacity.

Abstract:Journal editors serve as gatekeepers of knowledge, a role critical to preserving the quality and standards of good research. Some scholars have questioned whether editors have taken advantage of their position to publish their own work. To understand the extent to which editors of public administration journals self‐publish, we examined publishing patterns over a 20‐year period. We collected the names of editors from the mastheads of 13 generalist public administration journals from 1997 to 2016 and used data indexed from Web of Science to look at articles published in those journals during the same time. We found that while self‐publishing behaviour is not common across the entire field, it is a trend for certain journals and individuals. We also found the practice of self‐publishing is influenced by whether an individual served in a primary editorial role (e.g., editor‐in‐chief), length of editorial service, and overall scholarly productivity. We discuss appropriateness and ethical implications of the practice.

Abstract:The editors approached the 40th anniversary of the International Journal of Lifelong Education as an opportunity to consider the field by exploring how a corpus of 1462 articles (the first 40 volumes of the journal) questioned and shaped the field. A subset of advisory board members and the editors gathered in 2021 in groups to analyse major topics. The records of the reading, analyses and discussions of these groups offer a unique snapshot of the field and the journal's place in it. In this paper, the editors draw three topics from that work which delineate fundamental debates of lifelong education and reveal how the journal's authors have contributed to them. The topics are: citizenship and its learning; learning in, through and for work; and widening participation and higher education. Comparing the works contributing to these topical areas indicates how the field is evolving. It becomes clear that research and theory in lifelong education should remain vigilant, critical and robust if the field is to continue as a site of hope for future citizens, workers and students, rather than appropriated as an object for measurement, calculation and deployment for relatively narrow, less-than-human interests.

Abstract:This year, 2023, marks the 75th anniversary of Educational Review, one of the longest established and most authoritative education journals that has, from the beginning, reflected and portrayed the evolution of scholarship in the field. In the spirit of retrospection and commemoration as Executive Editor, I am taking this opportunity to provide snapshots of the categories of intellectual and professional shifts, pressures and continuities since the journal began its life in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham in 1948. In doing this, I am mindful that the construction of this text that makes an argument using the contribution of some people as illustrative points should be viewed as one endeavour, among many possible, to relate the work of the journal to contemporary questions and struggles. A construction that not only reveals aspects of my biography, experience, and the kinds of things I'm interested in writing about, but the pressure of events in the wider social and political arenas also.

Abstract:This editorial was written during a structured, facilitated writing retreat, organised by my colleagues at Bath Spa University, UK. The emphasis was on the structured nature of the experience, involving as it did goal and sub-goal setting, strict adherence to writing times, no distractions, and collaborative working. People aimed to work on chapters, papers, theses, as well as policy documents and research proposals. Unsurprisingly, I was the only one whose goal was to write this editorial. This is something I do five times each year, unless there is a guest editor for a special edition. I have a set way of working, but I have never aimed to do it all in one day. The first task was to define our main goal and four sub-goals, which would correspond to the work we aimed to do in the four one-hour writing periods. We then broke into small group discussions to share and refine these. In sharing my main goal, I mentioned that I have never received any feedback on the JET editorials that I have written. The collaborative nature of the retreat was immediately manifested as one helpful colleague recommended that I take to social media, using well-chosen keywords to promote the editorial. This is something we have been trying to do with JET for the past few years, but this was a timely reminder of the power and impact of the instant global communication possible with a few clicks. In this spirit, please may I encourage the JET faithful to 'follow' the Twitter feeds @JournalJET and @lindalavelle.

Ecosocial Philosophy of Education: Ecologizing the Opinionated Self

Abstract:Abstract While human beings generally act prosocially towards one another — contra a Hobbesian “war of all against all” — this basic social courtesy tends not to be extended to our relations with the more-than-human world. Educational philosophy is largely grounded in a worldview that privileges human-centered conceptions of the self, valuing its own opinions with little regard for the ecological realities undergirding it. This hyper-separation from the ‘society of all beings’ is a foundational cause of our current ecological crises. In this paper, we develop an ecosocial philosophy of education (ESPE) based on the idea of an ecological self. We aspire to consolidate voices from deep ecology and ecofeminism for conceptualizing education in terms of being responsible to and for, a complex web of interdependent relations among human and more-than-human beings. By analyzing the notion of opinions in light of Gilles Deleuze’s critique of the ‘dogmatic image of thought,’ we formulate three aspects of ESPE capable of supporting an ecological as opposed to an egoistic conception of the self: (i) rather than dealing with fixed concepts, ESPE supports adaptable and flexible boundaries between the self and the world; (ii) rather than fixating on correct answers, ESPE focuses on real-life problems shifting our concern from the self to the world; and (iii) rather than supporting arrogance, EPSE cultivates an epistemic humility grounded in our ecological embeddedness in the world. These approaches seek to enable an education that cultivates a sense of self that is less caught up with arbitrary, egoistic opinions of the self and more attuned to the ecological realities constituting our collective life-worlds.

Abstract:I have been writing Editorials in this journal for 14 years now, the little fellows amounting to the amazing number of 112, if I calculated correctly. After having taken over the editorship in 2010, the original idea was to comment on something that was part of the respective issue, be it a general topic or a specific contribution. This soon gave way to the occasional ramification dealing with a spontaneous thought or experience—the report on our travels through Assynt, for instance.[1] An initial feeling of unease if something like this did belong into a scientific medical journal was attenuated by unsolicited positive and encouraging feedback by numerous readers. Over time, growing insight into the mechanisms of publishing and extended networking with editorial colleagues made me realize that the Editorial as such has been scientifically analyzed. Was I doing the right thing? A very comprehensive and insightful analysis was published by Peh and Ng in 2010.[2] They list the common purposes of an editorial: Personal message from the editor to journal readers. Commentary on a published article in the same issue. Concise review on a topic of current interest (not warranting a full invited review). Drawing readers' attention to very recent developments or innovations. Commentary on nonscientific topics, for example, health policy, economics, law, or ethics .[2] Their Summary very nicely puts it all in a nutshell[2]: Although originally a means to deliver the editor's message, editorials have evolved to fulfil various purposes. As there is typically a limited space in which to deliver its contents, the message contained in the editorial needs to be well thought out and concisely delivered. It should contain the correct sequence of the elements of critical argument, ideally supported by evidence, with a clear conclusion. The venerable British Journal of Anaesthesia gives sound advice on how to write an Editorial, focusing on its practice of invited ones accompanying and commenting papers published in the journal.[3] There I learnt that you can even win a Pulitzer Prize for such efforts.[4] The prevailing practice regarding the purpose of Editorials is definitely that of opinion pieces related to a current paper, but, as shown, there are others. Independent of their focus, the most critical point seems to be the lack of peer review, which may allow placement of ideas that otherwise would not have made it into the journal. In a healthy scientific community, this will not go unnoticed or uncommented and stir an open discussion.[5] [6] [7] A critical evaluation of any Editorial by the reader is essential. "Opinions," as one says today on social media, are after all "my own." Interestingly, this special genre of academic writing with a definitive potential to influence the community seems to be utilized only rather sporadically by most journals.[8] In her in-depth analysis trying to answer the question "How do editors use editorials to lead their journals?" Maria Plakhotnik states that " Editorials represent a platform for editors to directly communicate with their readers and shape a unique character of the journal ."[8] I could not agree more. Editorials are highly personal. No wonder that their authors may undergo scrutiny. Phyllis Noerager Stern was the Editor-in-Chief of Health Care for Women International from 1983 to 2001. She wrote distinctly idiosyncratic Editorials, which became the subject of a detailed analysis.[9] Aside from medical topics, she was very outspoken about cultural issues and women's rights. This earned her the title of a " Living Legend " of the American Academy of Nursing in 2008. Thomas describes her as " irreverent, droll, and even a bit risqué at times ."[9] "Sounds familiar," I thought when reading this characterization. Stern wrote about how it feels to break a rib,[10] or getting health care in Thailand,[11] gave advice on how to publish or edit medical papers,[12] [13] mourned the murder of her beloved car "Pearly May" by an SUV,[14] and vividly described her cultural experience during a sea cruise to Alaska.[15] The wording of the titles alone! Finally, it looked like I had found a soulmate. Trying to establish contact, I found out that, unfortunately, Phyllis Stern had died in 2014 at 88 years of age. Just by reading her editorials, however, you gain an impression of this Editor as a living person, and, in this case, of someone I would have loved to meet. Reflecting my own practice, this implies that readers of my Editorials who do not know me in person either would possibly like to do so, or would rather not touch me -Abstract Truncated-

Guideposts and Roadblocks to the Career-Long Scholarly Engagement of Physical Education Teacher Education Faculty

Abstract:Purpose: Scholarship is essential for the growth and development of the physical education field. Over time, scholarship expectations have changed, forcing faculty members to alter time spent for research, teaching, and service. Social-cognitive career theory (SCCT) presents a model for understanding performance and persistence in an occupational environment. The interconnected aspects of SCCT have different emphasis related to self-efficacy, outcome expectations, or personal goals pursuit. This study explored physical education teacher education (PETE) faculty members' continuing engagement in scholarly activity through SCCT. Method: Data collection included interviews with 9 senior PETE faculty members who met the criteria for "productive scholars over time." Curriculum vitae were collected to verify productivity. Results: Data analysis revealed guidepost themes that included collaborating, finding balance, defining a research process, and maintaining a strong work ethic. Roadblocks encountered included other obligations and lack of support for research. Conclusions: Participants demonstrated strong self-efficacy; held high, positive expectations for success; and set very specific, clear, and deliberate goals. Participant behavior was moderated by their personal attributes (capacity to build relationships, set goals, and maintain interest and passion) and was tempered by the environments in which they worked. Fostering similar behaviors has the potential to guide future and current PETE faculty members in creating supportive and encouraging atmospheres for sustained productivity. The lack of literature relating to this topic warrants the need for more research exploring the influential factors and benefits gained from sustained scholarly productivity over time for PETE faculty members.

Abstract:This editorial is in support of an issue of the Journal that has a focus on educational technology (EdTech). With this in mind, this editorial will provide advice on how the editorial team for this section feels that educational technology will evolve into the latter part of the 2020’s, especially given the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Examples are given of how writing in this space has changed over the years of the pandemic, with a history of EdTech given, followed by an argument for the need for technology to be used in context. This is followed by descriptions of good practice around theoretical framing, methodology rigour, inclusion of the people element, and the need for the technology to serve a purpose. The piece concludes with a summary of where the editorial teams feels the field will go from here into the future. Throughout, practical examples of submissions made over the last few years are given to help illustrate a coherent direction. It is anticipated that this editorial will serve as a guide for future authors to use in service of better educational technology outputs in the future.

Abstract:The second issue of Seminar.net contains four articles and a book review – which all address the main interest of this journal. It has taken time to stabilize and make reliable the technology that drives this journal, because we do attempt to make images and texts co-operate to some extent. Our next step, technology-wise, is to make articles containing references to video hyperlinked. We hope that prospective authors will look forward to the option of using live images to support the conventional textual message. Our other feature – introducing each paper with a brief video – requires that authors that have papers accepted turn in a two-three minutes long video. Some readers have given us strong acclaim for this particular feature. We hope you find this useful for introducing the topic, to tempt you to read the full paper, and to read the paper with an image of the person who wrote it. We believe that giving a face to an otherwise quite anonymous academic, from a university or college somewhere in the world, is of additional value to the reader. Since the last issue our journal has received acceptance as a peer-reviewed journal from the Norwegian Council for Higher Education, meaning that Norwegian academics publishing here will be awarded the same credentials as for publishing in ordinary printed journals. In our national system a small number of journals have been elected to count as “high prestige journals”. One can agree or not with what at any time counts as prestigious or highly ranked journals. To some extent the auditors have used the ISI “impact factor” as their main indicator for prestige and status. In the field of educational research this might be of some interest, but on the whole the publishing pattern of educationalists differs from other academic areas, let’s say that of medical research or chemistry. How big the difference is, is debatable.As the North American historian Ellen Condliffe Lagemann has described in her book: “An elusive science : the troubling history of education research” (2000), - when educational research wants to become less elusive, it approaches neighbouring disciplines: psychology, medicine, sociology, political science. These academic areas have vitally different patterns of publication: higher frequency, shorter articles, higher degree of co-authorship etc.. Subsequently, authors need to accommodate to the genres that are specific for them. A brief look at the list of journals that gained a high “impact factor” in the field of education gives the impression that they are not what the general educationalist considers “an important journal”. Educationalists who succeed in publishing material that is relevant for neighbouring disciplines – in journals that operate in the border zone towards other disciplines – might have a stronger impact – not because they are read by educationists, but by sociologists, psychologists, etc. – Now, let this stand as a challenging thought, or a hypothesis to be developed. As Lagemann suggests, it is a difficult task to gain the status, support and independence of our neighbouring disciplines. So what is an important publication? In a lifetime of reading one might come across a handful of articles that becomes influential and even formative for oneself. In a lifetime of writing it is difficult to become an influential writer. To become widely read, and also make it to the “high impact”-list, one needs to succeed in many areas. Only a minority can claim: “I wrote something important”, and support that claim by a high scoreboard of citations. If one needs a quick check on your own impact, just take a quick check on “Google Scholar”, type your own name and you will get a fairly good picture of how frequently you are being quoted or referred in scholarly publishing sites. This editor did, and was not impressed by the result. But one dimension is important in the present picture of international publishing. Making your writing available on the Internet speeds up the process of becoming accessible. It has been calculated that articles, which are quickly available on the Internet, reach three times as many potential readers, and have a similarly increased chance of being referred or quoted. Simply being on the Internet increases the chances of making a difference. This is a very important argument in itself for establishing more journals in the format we are suggesting here in “Seminar.net”. A second issue is that readers who want exact and timely searches most often use dedicated databases. To reach a significant position in that respect, it is important to become indexed by the right sources. It is pivotal to supply indexing agencies with good data in this respect, and that is a task we are dedicated to. But first of all we try to publish pieces that make a difference. Our first article, by Professor John Olson, poses a type of question rarely raised in the field of educational technology nowadays. He addresses ethical concerns, issues that teachers are dealing with on a daily basis. In many respects teachers are still blamed for not letting ICT have the full effect on teaching as it allegedly has the potential for. Olson interprets this resistance as a positive phenomenon: as a will to ethically scrutinize the claims made by the proponents of ICT. It is striking that the debate of ICT-implementation in education resembles the debate of the 1970-ies. It seems that the Research-Development-Diffusion-cycle has not gone out of fashion in this field. Therefore the technocratic approach remains, and teachers are still blamed. Professor Alison Carr-Chellman's paper suggests a different approach to this question. We- and teachers too – are rightly resisting anything that affects our sense of control and grip on our own lives. Her depiction of technology is a critical account of how technocratic approaches are intruding into everyday technological environments. Using examples from popular culture she displays the need for an alternative to specialization, exact measurement, atomistic thinking and notions like “learning per second”. Dr. Kristen Snyder's paper is an explorative paper. It proposes to see the introduction of ICT in schools in a larger perspective. Organisational development is not entirely about making it function more optimally, and implementing ICT is not solely a question of making students learn more effectively. While a generation of “school development” has implemented organisational analysis, trying to optimise flow of information, breaking up old patterns of authority etc., implementing ICT has been seen as a question of classroom learning. It’s about time we join those efforts in a more holistic sense. Our last paper, by dr. Stephen Dobson, writes about literacy and narratives. He argues that narrative competence is a necessary prerequisite for understanding and knowing, and that this has been neglected in educational policies. He outlines different ways of describing narrative literacy related to various technologies and media and suggests a way to investigate these matters in a research programme. The editorial board is pleased to announce that Professor Lars Qvortrup of the University of Southern Denmark has joined us as a full member. His wide experience and his skills in the academic field of media, technology and lifelong learning injects a significant amount of wisdom and reflexivity to the enthusiastic group of editors. His joining-in is a very welcome development of a long-lasting cooperation with us at the Lillehammer University College.

Abstract:Reflecting on 50 years of educational technology research, a content and authorship analysis was conducted of 1777 research article titles and abstracts, published in the British Journal of Educational Technology (BJET) from 1970 to Issue 3, 2018. A text‐mining tool (Leximancer) was used to identify key concepts and themes emerging throughout each of the five decades, which were then compared to those found in a previous analysis of Computers & Education, as well as the most cited BJET publications in each decade. The framework of West and Rich (2012) was then used to provide guidance on BJET’s rigour, impact and prestige. Common themes in BJET throughout the past 50 years have included the evolution of teaching and learning in distance education, the emergence of instructional design, misunderstanding between practitioners and learning designers, issues of pre and in‐service teacher education and technology uptake by educators and students, including the confidence to do so, the technology skills of educators and students, as well as a lack of institutional support to provide space and time for training and integration to occur. The authorship analysis revealed an encouraging increase in international identity over time, with 60% of articles in BJET published by an author outside of the UK over the past 50 years, and 79% in the past decade. Despite this, contributions from South America, the Middle East and Africa are vastly underrepresented, and authors from these regions need further support from the field. Suggested future research areas include finding alternative models of educator professional development, further exploration of the role of theory and policy, as well as the rise of co‐authorship and collaborative research.

Abstract:Within the rough ground that is the field of education there is a complex web of ethical obligations: to prepare our students for their future work; to be ethical as educators in our conduct and teaching; to the ethical principles embedded in the contexts in which we work; and given the Southern context of this work, the ethical obligations we have to this land and its First Peoples. We put out a call to colleagues whose work has been concerned with the pedagogies of professional ethics, the ethical burdens of institutional injustice, and the application of ethical theory to education's applied fields. In the responses we received it can be seen that ethical concerns in education are broad ranging, covering terrain varying from the preparation of preservice teachers, ethics in higher education, early childhood and care, educational leadership, relational and communicative ethics. Perhaps it could also be argued that this paper demonstrates Gibbon's observation that 'Assumptions about the particularity of this time as new and ripe with opportunity to make a difference through philosophy of education are not new and there's much to learn from the persistence of wanting to imagine that they are' (in Peters et al., 2020 Peters, M. However, while the field of ethics is perennially concerned with human relations and pedagogical interventions to improve these, the responses collected here show that educational ethics is far from static. Educational ethics is a field that continues to develop in response to changing contexts.

Abstract:Purpose : Utilizing social constructivist learning theory and a conceptual framework for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), this self-study explores how I as a teacher-researcher intentionally evolved my approach to teaching SEL in a high school Physical Education setting. Method : Data were collected over twenty 75-min lessons over 15 weeks. One critical friend interview, 20 postteaching reflections, 18 observations, and 22 journal entries were conducted. A deductive and inductive approach utilizing the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana Framework for Qualitative Data Analysis was implemented. Results : Findings demonstrate how aligning my teaching with a contemporary framework led to a more explicit and intentional focus on SEL within my already utilized repertoire of pedagogies. Discussion/Conclusion : Incorporating self-study structure as a teacher-researcher led me to understand how I evolved and felt better equipped to teach for targeted SEL competencies and skills to further compliment the teaching of core Physical Education content.

Abstract:In 2011 the Journal of Moral Education (JME) celebrated its 40th anniversary of publication. It seemed appropriate to examine and reflect on the JME’s achievements by reviewing its evolution and contribution to the emerging field of moral education and development. Moral education trends, as reflected in the 945 articles published in JME from 1971 to 2011, were investigated by content analysis. The research objectives were: to discover the trends in moral education as represented by published articles and special issues (by analysis of disciplinary approaches, key topics, research methodologies and age-related educational levels) and to examine the international and gender-related development of the journal and the influence of its contributors (by analysis of first authors and editorial board members). The findings identify important concerns, key research topics and neglected areas in moral education and development. Analysis offers an insight into the contribution of JME as the main international interdisciplinary journal in this field, to the history of moral education, to theory and practice and in the changing socio-cultural contexts of the past 40 years. Discussion of the findings is offered, limitations are acknowledged and implications for future directions for the journal considered.

Abstract:Although the Philosophy for/with Children (P4wC) movement seems to have overcome two major points of criticism, these critical concerns can still be found in the literature today. The first question is whether P4wC can be placed in the field of philosophy at all, and the second asks whether children possess the cognitive abilities necessary to engage in philosophical discourse. One of the more recent articles voicing these concerns is authored by Caroline Heinrich, who describes P4wC as “an assault on philosophy and an assault on children” and argues that P4wC is a “concept imposed by adults on children.” She maintains that P4wC ignores “children’s thinking, questioning and play.” Furthermore, Heinrich states that P4wC cannot be called philosophy because children are not able to philosophize. In most of her argumentation, refering to Jan Piaget’s theoretical account of the cognitive development of children. Although the P4wC discourse has already dealt with these questions over the last few decades, it seems that there is still a need for further clarification. This paper provides an overview of the main points of criticism, which form the starting point of the author’s Polylogical Process Model of (Elementary-)Philosophical Education (PPEE model). This interdisciplinary approach, which is based on the constructivist conceptual change/growththeory of Stella Vosniadou and William Brewer, attempts to add new perspectives to two central questions addressing the P4wC movement: first, can P4wC actually be called philosophy?; second, do children have the cognitive abilities to engage in philosophical discourse? In addition, the question arises as to which pedagogical considerations based on constructivist learning theory could be added to P4wC methodology? The aim of the interdisciplinary PPEE model is to build a broader scientific foundation that has the potential to reduce the main points of criticism of the P4wC movement.

Abstract:In this year's editorial I would like to touch upon the concepts of self-worth and purpose within the context of ourselves as individuals and our participation within academic communities. As academics we will find at least some of our identity within the pursuit of academic research and university teaching. These 'career-goals' are the culmination of years spent studying our subject areas which have grown out of a love for the topic, as well as a love for wanting to know more and understand how it all fits together. Of course, the 'magic sauce' in this is how we have come to our subject in the first instance and developed a deep, life-spanning, journey to learn and understand more. For me, this began at high school where I realised there is a physical landscape that is a palimpsest for a vast range of processes that operate upon it, and this is expressed through the features we see on the Earth's surface. As a keen mountaineer, this connection with my subject came not only from academic inquisitiveness, but also from actively engaging within the landscape.
