Abstract:In order to get the maximum power from the wind, the variable-speed wind turbine should run at different speed when wind speed changes. In this paper a control system is introduced to get this purpose base on establishing the three-mass model of the wind turbine. The control system consists of two parts: one is a speed controller for generator control; the other is a PI controller for pitch control. Simulation results by using actual detailed parameters for wind turbine show the effectiveness and robustness of this control system.

Abstract:Wind energy is a viable option to complement other types of pollution-free generation. In the past constant-speed wind turbine is used for the limitation of the control technology and manufacturing technology. But this kind wind turbine has low efficiency and small operation range. Recently, more and more people make their focus on studying the MW variable-speed wind turbine for its high efficiency in using wind energy and large operation range. In this paper, base on the study of the model for the variable-speed wind turbine, a multimode power control system is proposed. This control system is consisting of two controllers: the speed controller and the pitch controller. By judging the different power point, the control system use different controller to make the wind turbine run at different mode. Simulation results by using actual detailed parameters for wind turbine show the effectiveness and robustness of this control system.

Abstract:A novel pitch angle control system is proposed to smooth output power and drive-train torque fluctuations for wind turbine. This system is characterized by an outer open control loop for enhancing the direct pitching motion and an intrinsic hydro-mechanical position control loop offering the benefit of sensor-less pitch control. A pragmatic design procedure is provided and several key design parameters are determined or optimized. Modeling, stability analysis and dynamic characteristics of this pitch control system are also presented. Comparative experimental results have validated the effectiveness and efficiency of this system in power and torque regulations.

Abstract:Based oil the control requirement of power regulation, spindle brake and yaw, the electro-hydraulic proportional integrated system of wind turbine was designed. Then the semi-physical simulation test-bed combined with the design software (BLADED) of wind turbine was formed. The piecewise PID pitch-controlled algorithm and the control strategy for the switchover between variable speed constant frequency (VSCF) and pitch control were used in the test-bed. The results show that when the wind Speed is higher than the rating, the output power through the piecewise PID control is more stable compared with normal PID control. And when the wind speed is kept around the rating, the switchover between VSCF and pitch control runs well and the demand of power control and optimal energy capture is satisfied.

Abstract:Since the importance of research on wind turbine power control technology,the electrohydraulic proportional pitch-controlled actuator was designed and combined with BLADED software to set up the semi-physical simulation test- bed.Then the piecewise PID pitch-controlled algorithm and the control strategy for transition between variable speed con- stant frequency(VSCF)and pitch control were used in the test-bed.Test results show that when the wind speed is above the rated one,the output power the rated one by PID control is kept more stable than that by normal PID control.And when the wind speed is up/down the rated one,the pitch control and VSCF can be well switched to satisfy with the de- mand of power control and optimal energy capture.

Abstract:The variable pitch control system,as a decision system,is very important to limit the output power and brake the speed in wind energy conversion system.The characteristics of megawatt-scale wind turbine,the process of variable pitch and the principle of variable pitch control system are researched,the load torque of blade is calculated.Then the overall structure of variable pitch control system,electric servo control system and backup power system are designed,and the software of pitch control system is designed using finite state machine.Finally the platform of vari-able pitch control system is built.The experimental results show that the electric variable pitch control system possess-es the ability of fast dynamic response and can achieve precise position control.

Abstract:A novel pitch control system is proposed for wind turbine to stabilize the drive-train power and torque fluctuations.This system is based on a constant pressure network and a hydraulic motor with variable displacement.The desired pitch control motions and directions can be achieved by regulating the displacement of the hydraulic motor to adapt to the varying loads acting on the blade.Mathematical model and a detailed analysis for the control characteristics of the system are provided.Further,a double control loop for position feedback is proposed to accurately track the desired pitch angle which is obtained based on fuzzy reasoning.Experimental results have demonstrated that this system can effectively control the power and driver torque,and consequently maintain the output power and torque on the rated values.In addition,this novel system has the advantages of high power versus volume,energy-saving and is particularly suitable for large scaled individual pitch controlled wind turbine.

Abstract:Hydraulic variable pitch system and electric variable pitch system were studied with pitch actuator.The two variable pitch systems were studied from the aspects of structure,principle and controller design,and the models were set up by SimHydraulics and Simulink separately.The simulation results verified the correctness of mod-els and design,and reflected the dynamic characteristics of the variable pitch control system,and provided the basis of the simulation of large-scale wind energy generation system under all kind of working conditions.The design of pitch controller offered theory support for the development of large-scale wind energy generation system,and provided the references for pitch controller system in actual wind fields.

Abstract:The variable-speed constant-frequency pitch-controlled law was obtained by analysis of wind turbine aerodynamics.The electromagnetic damping torque regulation of brushless doubly generator was used for variable-speed constant-frequency control and the piecewise PID with weight number algorithm was applied for individual pitch control.Because of large inertia and hysteresis of wind turbine,pitch control and variable-speed constant-frequency control were switched at predictive power instead of rated power to decease output power fluctuation.All these control strategies were used in the semi-physical simulation test-bed.Test result shows that when the wind speed is up the rated one,the blade flapwise is greatly deceased and the output power is kept around the rated.When the wind speed is varied around the rated one,the output power fluctuation is reduced.

Abstract:This paper mainly focuses on the challenging problem of fixed-time adaptive neural pitch angle control for variable-speed wind turbines. Firstly, a switching continuous fixed-time sliding mode variable is adopted to avoid the singularity problem. Then, an adaptive sigmoid function neural network is introduced to approximate the unknown nonlinear function of wind tur-bines. On this basis, a fixed-time adaptive neural pitch angle controller is systematically developed, such that the tracking error can converge to a small neighborhood of the origin in fixed-time, thereby improving the power generation efficiency of wind turbines. Finally, the fixed-time stability of the whole closed-loop system is analyzed with rigorous theoretical proof, and the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified through a 1.5-MW three-blade wind turbine in Matlab/Simulink.

Abstract:The operating principle of an electric pitch system of wind turbine is introduced in this paper, and three-phase PMSM (permanent magnetism synchronous motor) is chosen as the executive motor of the proposed system. TMS320F2812 is designed as the core of the electric propeller servo control system hardware based on the analysis of the servo variable pitch control system's principle, and a system software programming is carried out. Simulation and experiment studies are performed using MATLAB. Simulation studies indicated that the new system generate superior results over conventional system such as the dynamic response of the servo system speed is fast, and efficiency can be effective in the proposed system.

Abstract:Although wind power has gained tremendous development in recent years, how to achieve mechanical loads optimization to extend service life-time of wind turbines is still a hot and challenging topic. In this study, artificial intelligence and advanced control techniques are combined to approach this objective for variable-speed wind turbine systems operating in high-speed region. First, the real-time information of effective wind speed is extracted and predicted via support vector regression (SVR) by exploiting data stream acquired online. Optimization of the support vector regression's parameters is completed by the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Subsequently, the predicted wind speed is routed to a novel feedforward mechanism designed to build a nonlinear relationship between wind speed and pitch angle. Additionally, an uncertainty and disturbance estimator (UDE) based feedback controller is implemented to deal with the model uncertainties and external disturbances. Both loads optimization and rotor speed/generator power regulation are achieved via strict math analysis. Finally, extensive comparison studies between the proposed scheme and traditional pitch angle controllers are conducted on GH bladed platform to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Modern wind turbines are controlled in varying wind speed by blade pitching for power control. To satisfy the requirement of large driving forces and torques, fast response and high stiffness, hydraulic technology is usually used in the variable-pitch mechanism. The model of the hydraulic variable-pitch mechanism (HVPM) is simplified by a first-order inertia system in most literature. This simplified representation neglects the actual characteristics of the HVPM, and it is not precise and reasonable. Therefore, HVPM modelling is implemented and analyzed in this paper. Simulation results show that consequently the variable-speed wind turbine performs well at above-rated wind speeds.

Abstract:As wind energy becomes one of the fastest growing renewable energy resources, the control of large‐scale wind turbines remains a challenging task due to its system model nonlinearities and high external uncertainties. In this paper, an adaptive neural pitch angle control strategy is proposed for the variable‐speed wind turbines (VSWT) operating in pitch control region. The control objective is to maintain the rotor speed and generator power at the prescribed reference values in the presence of external disturbance, without the need of the information of system parameters and aerodynamics. First, the order of the system dynamics is increased by defining a filtered regulation error. By this means, the non‐affine characteristics of the VSWT model is transformed into a simple affine control problem and thus the feedback linearization technique can be employed. The continuousness of control signal is also guaranteed to relax the requirement on the bandwidth of actuators, and the mechanical load on pitching systems is reduced. Subsequently, an online learning approximator (OLA) is utilized to estimate the unknown nonlinear aerodynamics of the wind turbine and extend the practicability of the proposed adaptive parameter‐free controller. In addition, a high‐gain observer is implemented to obtain an estimation of rotor acceleration, which rejects the need of additional sensors. Rigid theoretical analysis guarantees the tracking of rotor speed/generator power and the boundedness of all other signals of the closed‐loop system. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is testified via the Wind Turbine Blockset simulation package in Matlab/Simulink environment. Moreover, comparison results reveal that the introduced solution is able to provide better regulation performance than the conventional PI counterpart.

Abstract:The appropriate pitch rate was investigated based on the wind turbine aerodynamic characteristics in order to improve the stability of output power and decrease the wind turbine vibration.A semi-physical simulation test-bed was built by designing a real electro-hydraulic proportional pitch-controlled system combined with the BLADED software for wind turbine design.Pitch-controlled tests were carried out at different pitch rates by changing the output flux of pump.The experimental results show that when the pitch rate is from 8°/s to 10°/s,the demand of power control is satisfied and the vibration amplitude of blades and tower are low.

Abstract:In recent years, with the development of economy and construction, clean energy has become the main development direction in the future. The wind energy has clean, renewable and pollution-free advantages, which make it more widely applied than other renewable energy. How to effectively improve the utilization rate of wind energy has become a major problem. This paper takes the permanent magnet direct-drive wind power generation system as the research object, and researches on the maximum power point tracking and pitch control of machine side. By using variable step hill-climbing searching method to track the maximum power point and pitch control with power compensation, the simulation model is established by using Matlab/Simulink and the simulation results and analysis are given. The wind power generation units can fulfill maximum wind energy capture function and variable pitch control.

Effective Wind Speed Estimation Based Maximum Power Point Tracking Control for Variable-Speed Wind Turbine

Abstract:With the rapid development of wind power generation technology, how to enhance the capture efficiency of wind turbines is still a challenging problem due to the stochastic characteristics of wind speed. In this paper, an effective wind speed estimation (EWSE) based Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller for variable-speed wind turbines (VSWT) is presented. A wind speed estimation model is firstly developed via support vector regression (SVR), the training of which is conducted by utilizing data acquired through the existing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. After training, the estimate of effective wind speed is obtained from the SVR model in an online manner. A low-pass filter is utilized to remove the high-frequency components of the estimate signal, which can highly mitigate the incurred mechanical loads. Thereafter, a simple proportional-integral (PI) controller is designed to maneuver the rotor speed to its desired value by combining the EWSE module. Finally, the feasibility and performances of the proposed controller are validated and demonstrated with WP 1.5MW wind turbines on the platform of FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) code and Simulink.

Abstract:In the paper, a MIMO linear model of wind turbine individual pitch system was established based on aerodynamics, and the loads of blade roots ware transferred into a mean value and variations on two orthogonal axis using d-a axis transformation. Fuzzy PID controllers were designed to control the loads components on the two orthogonal axes. To verify the controller, a semi-physical test bed has been built, and the test results show the individual controller can eliminate the imbalance loads effectively. Compare to collective pitch control, the for aft torque is decreased 68.1%, yaw torque is decreased 52.3%, and the value of output power changes little.

Abstract:Above rated wind speed, the wind turbine speed and output power are maintained near the rated values through the coordinative control of torque and pitch angle. Due to the non-linear behavior of the wind turbine, the traditional PID control is not effective in the pitch control. And accurate mathematical model of wind turbine is very difficult to get. In order to solve the problem, the fuzzy adaptive tuning PID control algorithm is proposed in the paper. About torque control strategy, constant torque control mode and constant power control mode are simulated respectively. Based on the analysis and comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of both modes, a mix control mode is proposed in order to give consideration to both torque and power. Simulation was carried out with the proposed torque control and pitch control strategy in MATLAB and GH Bladed software. The results proved that output power is optimized and the response of the wind turbine is good.
