Abstract:There are two claims concerning the role of cognition in emotion, namely those who claim that cognitive appraisal preconditions the elicitation of emotions, and those who claims that the latter does not necessarily call for the participation of the former. The authors of this paper argue that the diverging claims originate from a lack of consensus on the content of and cognitive appraisal processes in emotion, etc. On the basis of research and analysis, the paper makes it clear that the first claim can be both conceptually stated and empirically verified. It also accounts for the phenomenon of emotion seemingly predating cognitive appraisal. In general, its supports the claim that appraisal preconditions the elicitation of emotion.
