Abstract:Novel pi-conjugated polymer-protected metal (M = Pd, Au, Pt) nanoparticles of narrow size distribution and high dispersity were prepared via reduction of the metal ions by a pi-conjugated poly(dithiafulvene) (PDF) having strong electron-donating properties. The oxidized polymer protected the metal nanoparticles as stable colloidal forms without any precipitation for more than a month at room temperature under air. Due to the effect of the positively charged PDF, the absorption spectrum of the protected gold nanoparticle assigned to the surface plasmon resonance was found to display a strong red shift. The absorption band of the oxidized PDF assigned to the pi-pi* transition also showed a strong red shift compared with that of the pure PDF due to the effective expansion of T-conjugation of the oxidized PDF by charge transfer. The influences of the reaction temperature and PDF concentration were investigated on the metal nanoparticle size with the Pt nanoparticle as an example. The protected metal nanoparticles were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, the UV-vis absorption spectrum, and X-ray diffraction. The redox behavior of the metal nanoparticle dispersed pi-conjugated PDF was elucidated with cyclic voltammetry measurement.

Abstract:Reversibly photo-cross-linkable pH-responsive block copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly((2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-4-methyl-[7-(methacryloyl)oxyethyloxy] coumarin)) (PEO-b-P(DEA-co-CMA)) was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Block copolymer nanogels could be easily prepared by first photo-cross-linking of the micelles at pH>7 and then adjusting the solution to pH<7. The photo-cross-linking was proved to be reversibly controlled under alternative irradiation of UV light at 365nm and 254nm. As a result, the cross-linking degrees and sizes of the nanogels can be easily controlled by alternatively UV light irradiation. Finally, the nanogels can serve as nanoreactors for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. The protonated DEA units were first coordinated with HAuCl4, and then the electrostatically bounded AuCl4− anions were reduced to gold nanoparticles by NaBH4. The nanogel-supported gold nanoparticles were used in chemical catalysis. The pH-responsive photo-cross-linked nanogels have been characterized using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis spectra and 1H NMR spectroscopy measurements, respectively.

Abstract:Well-stable anionic polyelectrolyte-protected small gold nanoparticles were prepared by in situ reduction of HAuCl_4 with NaBH_4. UV-vis-near infrared spectrophotometer,transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra, X-ray diffraction and electrochemical instrument were used to characterize the sample. The results indicate that both pH and space hindrance of polymer chain play important role in the formation of stable gold nanoparticles.

Abstract:A method for the direct one-pot synthesis of amine-stabilized gold nanoparticles using 3-(trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine (TMSP dien) is described. The amine groups of this bifunctional molecule act as a stabilizer for gold nanoparticles as they form by reduction of HAuCl4. Highly stable gold nanoparticles with sizes tunable between 8 and 20 nm can be readily obtained. This method is quite simple to implement and environmentally benign as there is no need to add an external reducing reagent. The incorporated siloxy functionality was subsequently used to form a silica shell around the gold particle.

Abstract:Gold core–polythiophene shell composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 6–8 nm have been prepared via a two-step process. The morphology and structures of the obtained nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopies. The nanoparticles can be stably dispersed in usual organic solvents such as ethanol. Thus, they can be easily processed and have potential applications in nanoscale buildings and development of novel electronic devices.

Abstract:A novel hyperbranched multiarm copolymer of HBPO-star-PDEAEMA with a hydrophobic poly(3-ethyl-3-(hydroxymethyl) oxetane) (HBPO) core and many cationic poly(2-(N,N-diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) arms has been synthesized through an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method, and been applied to spontaneously reduce and stabilize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in water without other additional agents. The size of the nanoparticles could be effectively controlled at about 4 nm, and the nanoparticles are extremely stable in solution without aggregation even for one year. It was found that solution pH and the molar ratio of N/Au have certain effects on the size and stability of AuNPs. This work provides a simple method for the synthesis of uniform and highly stable AuNPs.

Abstract:A novel kind of redissolvable gold nanoparticles was prepared by using a poly(phenylene vinylene)-based hyperbranched conjugated polymer as stabilizing agent. The complexation between the surface gold atoms and the bipyridyl groups at the periphery of the hyperbranched polymer prevents the nanoparticles from aggregation. The surface plasmon band of the nanoparticles is insensitive to surrounding media due to the capping with organic layer. The fluorescence of the surface-attached conjugated macromolecule is significantly quenched by the gold nanocore. Solvent polarity effect suggests the occurrence of a photo-induced electron transfer process from the excited bound fluorophore to the nanocore.

Abstract:Stable gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are synthesized in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) by using amphiphilic multiblock copolymer (P4VP–PS–P4VP)n containing multiple trithiocarbonate moieties or amphiphilic triblock copolymer (HS–P4VP–PS–P4VP–SH) with thiol end groups as protecting agents. Only isolated gold nanoparticles are obtained, which indicate that the multiple functional groups of a single polymer chain are grafted at the same time to the same nanoparticle. The sizes of the AuNPs are slightly increased with raising the concentration of gold salt for a given concentration of the copolymers, leading to the red shift of the surface plasmon resonance of the AuNPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and scanning force microscopy (SFM) images confirm that the AuNPs are indeed wrapped by the block copolymers. With the amphiphilic characteristic of the block copolymers, the AuNPs can be successfully transferred from DMF into aqueous solution. An unexpected red shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the AuNPs after solvent transfer is observed, which is mainly attributed to the dense protecting polymer layers on the surfaces of the AuNPs in aqueous solutions. Both the size and structure of nanoparticles are maintained after solvent transfer. The AuNPs in aqueous solutions can be stable for a wide range of pH value up to pH≈9. At strong basic condition with pH>10, the AuNPs will aggregate. The effect of pH value on the stability of the AuNPs is reversible. The optical property of the AuNPs also slightly depends on the pH value.

Abstract:We describe here a one-step synthesis of hybrid metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and polymer composites on glass substrates using poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as both the reducing agent and polymer matrix. With this method, it takes only one minute to produce a nanocomposite thin film that contains MNPs with controlled size and morphology. The size and morphology of gold nanoparticles can be manipulated by simply modulating the ratio between the PVP and the Au precursor, while the nearly monodispersed spherical silver nanoparticles are insensitive to the reaction conditions, which is believed to result from a better control over the crystal structure of the Ag seeds than that of the Au seeds in the presence of PVP. Moreover, the resulting MNP-polymer composites are high-quality thin films with tunable optical properties-the lambda(max) of absorption spectra changes from 480 nm to greater than 580 nm (from blue to red color). This environmentally friendly synthetic technique may open up a new avenue for facile nanomaterial synthesis that is not accessible by conventional solution chemistry.

Abstract:In this article, we present a systematic, controlled synthesis of water-dispersed, polymer-stabilized Au nanoparticles with different sizes by either self-reduction or ultraviolet (UV) irradiation-enhanced reduction in the presence of double hydrophilic block copolymers with different functional patterns. The morphology of the particles was found to be spherical, triangular, truncated triangular, and hexagonal under various conditions. In addition, both the particle size and shape could be controlled by variation of the functional group pattern of the block copolymers. With a hexacyclen functional block, we achieved a perfect match to the Au (111) face, resulting in extremely thin free-standing triangular and hexagonal nanoplatelets that show interference patterns in the electron beam due to deformations in the sub-Angstrom range. UV-visible spectra show that the plasmon absorption band can be fine tuned, depending on the type of the polymer and the irradiation power. The influence of the functional polymer groups and the irradiation on the formation of gold nanciparticles was investigated in more detail.

Abstract:Polyelectrolyte-protected gold nanoparticles have been facilely obtained by heating an amine-containing polyelectrolyte/HAuCl4 aqueous solution without the additional step of introducing other reducing agents. All experimental data indicate that different initial molar ratio of polyelectrolyte to gold can lead to the formation of dispersed nanoparticles, quasi one-dimensional aggregates of nanoparticles or bulk metal deposits. More importantly, the growth kinetics of gold particles thus formed can be tuned by changing the initial molar ratio of polyelectrolyte to gold.

Abstract:This paper deals with the preparation of nanogold colloid by chemical reducing gold from relatively with a solution of HAuO4 With HC2O4 as a reduction reagent and PVP as dispersion and stabilizer. The gold particles size of 20 nm - 25 mn were obtained under the given conditions. Some factors such as pH value, adding way, the amount of the HC2O4 and the PVP etc which affecting the particle size and shape of the nanogold in the colloids, are discussed, respectively. Optimal conditions obtained for making nanogold colloid with particle size less than 20nm are: pH = 4 similar to 5, Na2C2O4/Au = 3, PVP/Au = 1: 1, and at 343K. Adding HAuCl4 into the mixture of Na2S2O4 and PVP aqueous solution is a better way of operation. The new process is characterized by its simple operation, high productivity and lower cost.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles protected by a novel pi-conjugated polymer [poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) containing pendent disulfide and bipyridine groups] are synthesized and characterized. The polymer can stabilize the gold nanoparticles effectively. The nonlinear optical properties of the gold nanoparticle colloid solutions in toluene are investigated by using the Z-scan technique at a wavelength of 532 nm and pulse width of 4 ns. The gold-nanoparticle colloid solutions show an exceptional nonlinear absorption effect, which simultaneously contains the saturated absorption resulting from third-order nonlinearity and a large reverse-saturated absorption resulting from fifth-order nonlinearity. In addition, asymmetric self-focusing refractive effects are investigated in the colloid solutions.

Abstract:A stable colloidal form of novel pi-conjugated polydithiafulvene (PDF)-protected PbS nanoparticles was first prepared in a nonaqueous solution at room temperature. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images demonstrated that the synthesized PbS nanoparticles of stable colloidal form were of cubic rock-salt structure with narrow size distribution. The average diameters of PDF-protected PbS nanoparticles were controllable by varying the initial concentrations of the lead and sulfur sources in the reaction, systems. The absorption spectra and electrochemical properties of the protected PbS nanoparticles have been investigated. It was found that the PDF influenced strongly the excitonic absorption peaks of the protected PbS nanoparticles.

Abstract:Two water soluble conjugated polymers, poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and ammonium ion stabilized poly(phenylene vinylene) (P2), are found to be able to reduce noble metal ions to zero-valent metals via a direct chemical deposition technique. Au nanoparticle clusters can be obtained through reduction of Au3+ ions by PEDOT:PSS and the electronic coupling between them can be controlled by HAuCl4 concentration. Core/shell Ag/polymer nanostructures are prepared from reduction of Ag+ ions by P2, which have a ppb detection limit for 4-MBA using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). This conjugated polymer mediated synthesis of metal nanoparticles may open a new avenue for fabricating nanomaterials and nanocomposites with tunable optical properties that are dominated by their structure and electronic coupling between nanoparticles.

Abstract:Au narroparticles were prepared by reduction of HAuCl4 with NaBH4 in the presence of generation 1.5 poly(amidoamine) dendrimers with surface hydroxyl groups (OH-PAMAM-1.5). By optimizing the conditions of the preparation, stable, and uniform Au nanoparticles of 2.7 +/- 0.5 nm were obtained. UV-Vis absorption, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) have been used to study the structure and characterization of the nanocomposites. From which, it could be suggested that Au nanoparticles were surrounded by OH-PAMAM-1.5 and the size distribution of Au nanoparticles is narrow. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Polyelectrolytes have been widely used as building blocks for the creation of thickness-controllable multilayer thin films in a layer-by-layer fashion, and also been used as flocculants or stabilizer of colloids. This paper reports novel finding that a kind of polyelectrolyte, polyamines, can facilely induce HAuCl4 to spontaneously form well-stabilized gold nanoparticles without the additional step of introducing a reducing reagent during the elevation of temperature, even at room temperature in some cases. The polymer chain-confined microenvironment and the acid-induced evolution of amide of such kind of polyelectrolyte solution play an important role in the nucleation and growth of gold nanoparticles. This method would not only be helpful to gain an insight into the formation of gold nanoparticles in polyelectrolyte systems, but also provide a novel and facile one-step polyelectrolyte-based synthetic route to polyelectrolyte protected gold nanoparticles in aqueous media for potential applications. More importantly, this strategy will be general to the preparation of other nanoparticles.
