Abstract:Heavy oil is an important component of global petroleum resources and it is widely distributed in China. Bleaching of red beds, enrichment of ferrous-iron, alterations of clay mineral and carbonate, and botanical anomalies caused by hydrocarbon leakage of heavy oil reservoirs exhibit diagnostic spectral features that allow detection by remote sensing techniques. ETM+ image was used to identify anomalous area caused by hydrocarbon leakage in study area. Three enhancement techniques including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), band ratio, and False Colour Composition (FCC) were used. Based on the detailed analysis of eigenvectors and eigenvalues derived from different combinations of PCA in two typical region (Zhalaite and Fula'erji) and the whole western slope zone, four principal components (PCs) including 1345-PC3 (the third component of the PCA on band 1, 3, 4, 5), 1357-PC3, 2357-PC3 and 3457-PC4 showed steady spectral enhancement for the hydrocarbon-induced minerals. The PCs were combined with band ratios of 3/1, 4/3, (4/3)-(2/3) and 7/5 for FCC. According to the tonal characteristics of wells and the visual expression, some FCC images were selected to delineate hydrocarbon-induced area. The result reveals that the distribution of tone anomaly of images is consistent with the field data in most area.

Abstract:Rock physics has proven its credibility for the quantitative seismic interpretation of reservoir and reservoir characterization. In this study, we implemented K-means clustering to group data points more objectively and without prior misconceptions into clusters. Furthermore, we used the grouping suggested by the algorithm for our study. We integrated rock physics and K-means cluster analysis to determine a possible hydrocarbon reservoir using three well logs data. Initially, K-means clustering was implemented on density logs and based on the arithmetic mean of each density log cluster, sandstone and shale-dominant parts were identified and separated. Then, rock physics parameters were computed for the sandstone-dominant part of the well logs. Based on the cross-plots of Lame's constants with density product, and Lame's constants ratio, additional lithology discrimination was done for the identification of a clean gas-sand zone. In the clean gas-sand zone, two different pore fluids zones were identified based on V-p/V-s ratio, Poisson ratio, P- and S-wave impedances. Finally, statistical analysis was carried out to observe the underlying frequency distribution of rock physics parameters. The integration of cluster analysis and rock physics gave us significant information about the presence of different fluids and the existence of a potential hydrocarbon reservoir.

Ultramicroscopic organic petrology and potential of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion of quality marine source rocks in South China

Abstract:Choosing samples of quality marine source rocks in various strata in South China,we make a study of mineral composition,correlation between organic matter and mineral composition,occurrences of organic matter,hydrocarbon-generating organism and features of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion by ways such as whole rock X-ray diffraction,combined scanning electron microscope and energy spectrum,and simulated experiment of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion.The results show that minerals such as quartz,calcite and dolomite in these source rocks are mainly biogenetic or related to biogenetic origin.The total organic carbon content has a positive correlation with the quartz content but a negative correlation with clay minerals content.We believe that organic matter in these source rocks have three main occurrences: 1) organic matter associated with siliceous matter.It is the major occurrence in the quality marine source rocks in South China;2) organic matter associated with calcareous matter.It is the main occurrence in some quality calcareous source rocks in the Permian;3) organic matter associated with clay,or coated by flaky clay particles and associated with siliceous and calcareous bioclastics.In this case,the occurrence of organic matter is mainly controlled by depositional setting and sedimentary facies.There are mainly three kinds of hydrocarbon-generating organisms: algae,benthos and fungus.Samples from the same layer of source rocks commonly contain multiple parent materials.According to the simulated experiments,the hydrocarbon-generating potential of floating algae is the same as Type Ⅰ kerogen,while that of benthos is the same as Type Ⅱ kerogen.Super thin siliceous or calcareous layers rich in organic matters are easy to expel early-generated heavy oil,and thus a giant heavy oil pool may be formed.In contrast,organic matter coated by flaky clay particles are hard to expel early-generated heavy oil,and thus a light oil pool may be formed.
Remote Sensing Interpretation of Areas with Hydrocarbon Microseepage in Northeast China Using Landsat-7/ETM+ Data Processing Techniques

Abstract:Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images were used to interpret hydrocarbon-induced alterations in the northwestern part of the Songliao Basin, northeast China. Spectral enhancements for locating hydrocarbon-related minerals on images included principal component analysis (PCA), band ratioing, optimum index factor (OIF) and false colour composite (FCC). Four principal component (PC) and four band ratio images showed outstanding spectral response of hydrocarbon-induced mineral and sediment assemblages: 1345-PC3 (third PC image on bands 1, 3, 4 and 5), 1357-PC3, 2357-PC3 and 3457-PC4, and band ratios 3/1, 4/3, 7/5 and 4/3-2/3. Five OIF-defined FCCs were informative and clear for anomaly interpretation. Consequently, heavy oil prospect areas totalling 159 km(2) were delineated. Acidolysis hydrocarbon measurements of ground soil samples suggest high soil concentrations of light hydrocarbons, indicating that the tonal anomalies in the images have a geological origin. Thus, remote sensing interpretation can be a useful primary exploration tool in hydrocarbon-altered areas, provided that techniques are adapted to site characteristics.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for and consumption of crude oils, oil spill accidents happen frequently during the transportation of crude oils and oil products, and the environmental hazard they pose has become increasingly serious in China. The exact identification of the source of spilled oil can act as forensic evidence in the investigation and handling of oil spill accidents. In this study, a weathering simulation experiment demonstrates that the mass loss of crude oils caused by short-term weathering mainly occurs within the first 24 h after a spill. and is dominated by the depletion of low-molecular weight hydrocarbons (< C-18 n-alkanes). Short-term weathering has no significant effect on delta C-13 values of individual n-alkanes (C-12-C-33), suggesting that a stable carbon isotope profile of n-alkanes can be a useful tool for tracing the source of an oil spill, particularly for weathered oils or those with a relatively low concentration or absence of sterane and terpane biomarkers. Abstract:The study of petroleum inclusions,which has been made great progress in last 20 years,has played very important role in the evaluation of potential petroleum system.Because of its unique feature,it has become an effective tool for determining the oil migration and accumulation histories,the formation time of the oil reservoirs and the source and maturity of oil.The most significant progress recently in petroleum inclusion research field is pVT modeling,which could estimate the trapping p-T conditions of petroleum by using isochors intersection of coeval petroleum inclusions and aqueous inclusions.This technique could provide an independent and more accurate way for appraising the formation environment(trapping pressure and temperature) and compositional evolution history of petroleum system.Although the pVT modeling is still in its early stage as the present precision and accuracy of two kinds of software(VTFlinc and FIT) needs to be improved,it will be more and more applied to the quantitative analysis of petroleum reservoir formation by combining with traditional fluid-inclusion petrography and thermodynamic study.

Abstract:The identification and classification of petroliferous unit is the key to the success in the exploration for oil-gas fields with geophysical knowledge that are the main means and ways to reduce exploration risk and improve exploration efficiency. In this paper, it analyzes geophysical response characteristics under conditions of gas, oil and water through the establishment of horizontal layered medium model. Then it extracts and analyzes seismic abnormal characteristics of the data structure combining the method of grey system theory based on the experiment, which are considered as an important reference for further objectively identifying petroliferous unit and the exploration of oil-gas fields in the practical application with comparison and analysis.

Abstract:Petrophysical rock typing in reservoir characterization is an important input for successful drilling, production, injection, reservoir studies and simulation. In this study petrophysical rock typing is divided into two major categories: 1) a petrophysical static rock type (PSRT): a collection of rocks having the same primary drainage capillary pressure curves or unique water saturation for a given height above the free water level, 2) a petrophysical dynamic rock type (PDRT): a set of rocks with a similar fluid flow behavior. It was shown that static and dynamic rock types do not necessarily overlap or share petrophysical properties, regardless of wettability. In addition, a new index is developed to define PDRTs via the Kozeny-Carman equation and Darcy's law. We also proposed a different index for delineation of PSRTs by combining the Young-Laplace capillary pressure expression and the Kozeny-Carman equation. These new indices were compared with the existing theoretical and empirical indices. Results showed that our indices are representatives of previously developed models which were also tested with mercury injection capillary pressure, water-oil primary drainage capillary pressure, and water-oil relative permeability data on core plugs from a highly heterogeneous carbonate reservoir in an Iranian oil field. This study enabled us to modify the conventional J-function to enhance its capability of normalizing capillary pressure data universally.

Abstract:In recent years, interest in unconventional resource plays has grown substantially due to horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques. However, the high cost of drilling, choosing the right locations for perforation intervals during hydraulic fracturing is a crucial issue. Therefore, identifying so called “sweet spot” with high potential for hydrocarbon production plays an important role in oil and gas industry. In this study a new “double sweet spot” identification method using cluster analysis of well-logged petrophysical properties of facies is presented. Firstly, an engineering sweet spot identification method based on geophysical responses parameters (brittleness index and permeability) is introduced to classify the target zone. Triaxial compression tests are performed to obtain the static Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of the rock samples. To calculate dynamic Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, a novel model for determining interval transit time of S-wave is proposed based on the multiple linear regression theory according to well logging data. By performing the cluster analysis, an intersection diagram of permeability and calculated normalized Rickman's brittleness is built and then engineering sweet spots in target zone are characterized based on well-logged petrophysical properties of facies. By plotting the intersection diagram of porosity and oil saturation based on the cluster analysis theory, geological sweet spots in target zone were characterized and four types of rock petrophysical facies are divided: Sandstone A (So>48%, 8<φ<19%); Sandstone B (31<So<48%, 6<φ<18%); Sandstone C (18<So<31%, 8<φ<20%) and Sandstone D (0<So<18%, 8<φ<17%). Secondly, target formation classification is carried out using a proposed geological sweet spot identification method based on reservoir physical parameters (oil saturation and porosity). The relationship between core electrical resistivity and water saturation is determined by traditional Archie's formula and then an oil saturation prediction model in target reservoir is established. Based on the experimental porosity and permeability measurements of 47 core samples and well logging data, a porosity interpretation model is proposed. By plotting the intersection diagram of porosity and oil saturation based on the cluster analysis theory, geological sweet spots in target formation are characterized and four types of rock petrophysical facies are given: Sandstone A (K>0.1mD, BI>38); Sandstone B (K>0.1mD, 33<BI<38); Sandstone C (K>0.1mD, BI<33) and Sandstone D (0.01
Application of Single Hydrocarbon Inclusions in Petroleum Geochemistry: A Case Study of the Tahe Oilfield

Abstract:The hydrocarbon accumulation period and petroleum source characteristics in the Tahe oilfield were discussed using the newly developed methods for hydrocarbon inclusion analyses. The results confirmed that there were many stages of hydrocarbon accumulation in the Tahe oilfield, especially predominated by the Middle Her?cynian and the Late Himalayan. The online laser ablation compositional analyses of single hydrocarbon inclusion showed that the early oil ( yellow fluorescing inclusion) was characterized by bimodal n?alkane distribution and higher aromatic component content, belonging to medium crude oil with relatively lower maturity. In contrast, the late oil ( blue fluorescing inclusion) was featured by unimodal n?alkane distribution and lower aromatic compo?nent content, belonging to late light crude oil at the middle-late mature stage. Based on the petroleum source or sedimentary environment of source rocks, hydrocarbon?forming organisms, maturity, migration distance, accu?mulation process and period, the early oil was suggested mainly from -C1-O1 excellent source rocks and the late oil was mainly from O3 carbonate source rocks.

Abstract:Ultra-deep crude oils have become one of the most important targets for petroleum exploration. In ultra-deep petroleum systems, differential hydrocarbon generation of various source rocks and multistage oil accumulation and secondary alteration processes led to the coexistence of crude oils with diverse sources and formation mechanisms. How to effectively identify complicated crude oil categories is a difficult issue confronted with ultra-deep petroleum exploration. Because crude oils are generally fluorescent, fluorescence analysis methods exhibit great application potential for classifying ultra-deep crude oils. However, due to the lack of other restrictive parameters, previous methods based on fluorescence color and fluorescence spectra limit the geological application of fluorescence analysis methods in ultra-deep petroleum systems. Based on the combination of fluorescence spectral parameters and fluorescence lifetimes, this study innovatively provides a new fluorescence analysis method for identifying complex crude oil categories in ultra-deep petroleum systems. Moreover, the sources and formation mechanisms of the ultra-deep crude oil can be further identified by combining fluorescence parameters with physical and geochemical parameters. By applying the above method, this study effectively identified three categories of crude oils and revealed their sources and formation mechanisms in the ultra-deep petroleum system of the southwestern Tabei Uplift, Tarim Basin, China. The new fluorescence analysis method may have practical significance for revealing the sources and formation mechanisms of ultra-deep crude oils.

Abstract:Hydrocarbon gases exist in the forms of free gas,adsorbed gas,dessolved gas and gas-liquid inclusion in surface.Petroleum geochemical prospecting in Gujiazi and Houwujiahu gas field areas in the Shiwu Fault Depression in Southeastern Songliao Basin shows that the indicators of acid-digestion hydrocarbon,heat-release hydrocarbon and head-space gas are not correlative with each other.This means the hydrocarbons have different sources.The indicators of acid-digestion hydrocarbon,heat-release hydrocarbon and head-space gas contain abundant oil and gas information.The anomaly distributions of these hydrocarbon indicators are corresponding with the structures and gas fields in the study area.The correlation between gas field and surface hydrocarbon anomaly shows that it is the hydrocarbon vertically migrating to the surface from deep oil and gas accumulation that bring the hydrocarbon anomalies into existence in the surface.

Abstract:The fundamental problems of TOF SIMS applications to the hydrocarbon generating study of source rocks, such as the techniques of sample preparation, the relationship between the abundance and the content of fragment ions, and the necessity of the high resolution of TOF SIMS were discussed. The TOF SIMS fragment peak ascription of organic and inorganic ions of mineral bituminous groundmass of Jurassic source rocks in Turpan Hami basin was studied. The characteristics of the spectrum distribution, and constitutes of fragment ions of mineral bituminous groundmass were analyzed. And then the evaluating methods of the hydrocarbon generating potential were put forward. In addition, the typical parameters, X AL and Y OX and Z AR indicating the hydrocarbon generating potential of mineral bituminous and other organic matter in source rocks were used to reflect the aliphatic, oxygenous, and aromatic structure. It is confirmed by Rock Eval that these parameters are effective and significant in evaluating the hydrocarbon generation. The findings of CH 5NO 3 + peaks indicate that the bacteria play an important role in the organism decomposition.

In order to quantitatively investigate the role of a single phase in integrated rock of heavy oil sands at a specific condition, special laboratory measurements on oil and sands of heavy oil sands rock are designed and performed for three artificial samples. By the improved laboratory approaches, we can gain an insight into the physical interaction between the solid and fluid components in heavy oil sands. The exact laboratory results reveal that the elastic properties of heavy oil is distinctively temperature dependent, which reflects the total variation of the multiphase on temperature, and in turn demonstrates that heavy oils dominate the elastic properties of the heavy oil sands. Furthermore, the extended Gassmann model indicates that heavy oil properties may be the major reason for the misfit of underestimating the both P- and S-wave velocities as temperature decreases. Application of Identification of Oil,Gas and Water Intervals to Luxi Area in Junggar Basin

Abstract:The distinguishing of oil,gas and water intervals is a basic task of petroleum exploration and exploitation.Geochemical methods play important roles in solving this task.In this paper,new advances of this study were shown based on a case study in Luxi area of central Junggar basin.It was found that the identification in different areas can not be settled in one rule.This is due to the geological and geochemical differences in reservoir rock.Two new geochemical indices are employed.They are organic geochemical index of grains containing oil inclusions(GOI) and inorganic geochemical index of Mn content of reservoir diagenetic calcite.From oil interval to oil-water mixed interval,to water interval,and to dry interval,these parameters have fairly good varying trend.The maximum GOI values range from 11% to 7%~11%,to 6%~7% and to 6%,and Mn content(MnO,wt%) ranges from 2.5% to 2.0%~2.5%,to 1.5%~2.0% and to 1.0%.As to the identification of gas(condensate) interval and heavy oil interval,it can be solved by biomarkers' geochemical parameters.It is shown that gas interval is characterized by the distribution of C20C21C23 tricyclic terpanes which are much higher than pentacyclic terpanes(tricyclic terpanes/ pentacyclic terpanes2.0).The heavy oil reservoir is typically characterized by 25-norhopanes.
Developing a Thermal Characteristic Index for Lithology Identification Using Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing Data

Abstract:In remote sensing petrology fields, studies have mainly concentrated on spectroscopy remote sensing research, and methods to identify minerals and rocks are mainly based on the analysis and enhancement of spectral features. Few studies have reported the application of thermodynamics for lithology identification. This paper aims to establish a thermal characteristic index (TCI) to explore rock thermal behavior responding to defined environmental systems. The study area is located in the northern Qinghai Province, China, on the northern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where mafic-ultramafic rock, quartz-rich rock, alkali granite rock and carbonate rock are well exposed; the pixel samples of these rocks and vegetation were obtained based on relevant indices and geological maps. The scatter plots of TCI indicate that mafic-ultramafic rock and quartz-rich rock can be well extracted from other surface objects when interference from vegetation is lower. On account of the complexity of environmental systems, three periods of TCI were used to construct a three-dimensional scatter plot, named the multi-temporal thermal feature space (MTTFS) model. Then, the Bayes discriminant analysis algorithm was applied to the MTTFS model to extract rocks quantitatively. The classification accuracy of mafic-ultramafic rock is more than 75% in both training data and test data, which suggests TCI can act as a sensitive indicator to distinguish rocks and the MTTFS model can accurately extract mafic-ultramafic rock from other surface objects. We deduce that the use of thermodynamics is promising in lithology identification when an effective index is constructed and an appropriated model is selected.
