Abstract:A periodic layered medium, with unit cells consisting of a dielectric and an electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT)-based atomic vapor, is designed for light propagation manipulation.Considering that a destructive quantum interference relevant to a two-photon resonance emerges in EIT-based atoms interacting with both control and probe fields, an EIT-based periodic layered medium exhibits a flexible frequency-sensitive optical response, where a very small variation in the probe frequency can lead to a drastic variation in reflectance and transmittance.The present EIT-based periodic layered structure can result in controllable optical processes that depend sensitively on the external control field.The tunable and sensitive optical response induced by the quantum interference of a multi-level atomic system can be applied in the fabrication of new photonic and quantum optical devices.This material will also open a good perspective for the application of such designs in several new fields, including photonic microcircuits or integrated optical circuits.
Characterizing Strong Light-Atom Interaction by a Self-Consistent Solution to Maxwell-Schrödinger Equations

Abstract:Summary form only given. Strong light-atom interaction is at the heart of atomic, molecular and optical physics; and is also important to quantum optics, quantum computing, nuclear magnetic resonance and laser. When an atom (or two-level system) is illuminated by a coherent beam of photons, it will cyclically absorb photons and re-emit them by stimulated emission, which is called Rabi oscillation. Here we developed a semiclassical framework to model the phenomenon via a self-consistent solution to Maxwell-Schrödinger equations. Different from Maxwell-Bloch equations, the wave function of the atom replacing for the density matrix nonlinearly interacts with the magnetic vector potential under coulomb gauge condition. A well-posed time evolution system derived from light-atom Hamiltonian is numerically solved by finite-difference time-domain method. The developed semiclassical Maxwell-Schrödinger framework could be generalized to model light-exciton interaction in semiconductor nanostructures.

Abstract:The optical response of an atomic vapor can be coherently manipulated by tunable quantum interference occurring in atomic transition processes. A periodic layered medium whose unit cells consist of a dielectric and an EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) atomic vapor is designed for light propagation manipulation. Abstract:When an atom (or two-level system) is illuminated by a coherent beam of photons, it will cyclically absorb photons and re-emit them by stimulated emission, which is called Rabi oscillation. By using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, Maxwell-Schrodinger equation is solved for modeling the Rabi oscillation. The proposed method is compared with the existing approximate theoretical models. It is found that these approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent numerical approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.
Non-linear absorption and density dependent dephasing in Rydberg EIT-media

Abstract:Light propagation through an ensemble of ultra-cold Rydberg atoms in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) configuration is studied. In strongly interacting Rydberg EIT media, non-linear optical effects lead to a non-trivial dependence of the degree of probe beam attenuation on the medium density and on its initial intensity. We develop a Monte Carlo rate equation model that self-consistently includes the effect of the probe beam attenuation to investigate the steady state of the Rydberg medium driven by two laser fields. We compare our results to recent experimental data and to results of other state-of-the-art models for light propagation in Rydberg EIT-media. We find that for low probe field intensities, our results match the experimental data best if a density-dependent dephasing rate is included in the model. At higher probe intensities, our model deviates from other theoretical approaches, as it predicts a spectral asymmetry together with line broadening. These are likely due to off-resonant excitation channels, which however have not been observed in recent experiments. Atomic motion and coupling to additional Rydberg levels are discussed as possible origins for these deviations.

Abstract:General formulae for the transient evolution of the susceptibility (absorption) induced by the quantum interference effect in a four-level N-type EIT medium is presented. The influence of the signal light on the transient susceptibility for the probe beam is studied for two typical cases when the strength of the coupling beam is much greater or less than that of the signal field. An interesting level reciprocity relationship between these two cases is found.

Abstract:The absorption and dispersion of probe light is studied in an unified framework of three-level system, with coherent laser driving and incoherent pumping and relaxation. The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) are studied in details. In the phase diagram of the unified three-level system, there are distinct parameter regimes corresponding to different lineshapes and mechanisms, and the incoherent transition could control the cross-over between EIT and ATS. The incoherent control of the three-level system enables the investigation of various phenomena in quantum optics, and is beneficial for experiments of light-matter interactions.

On the coupled Maxwell-Bloch system of equations with non-decaying fields at infinity

Abstract:We study an initial-boundary-value problem (IBVP) for a system of coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations (CMBE) that model two colors or polarizations of light resonantly interacting with a degenerate, two-level, active optical medium with an excited state and a pair of degenerate ground states. We assume that the electromagnetic field approaches non-vanishing plane waves in the far past and future. This type of interaction has been found to underlie nonlinear optical phenomena including electromagnetically induced transparency, slow light, stopped light, and quantum memory. Under the assumptions of unidirectional, lossless propagation of slowly-modulated plane waves, the resulting CMBE become completely integrable in the sense of possessing a Lax Pair. In this paper, we formulate an inverse scattering transform (IST) corresponding to these CMBE and their Lax pair, allowing for the spectral line of the atomic transitions in the active medium to have a finite width. The scattering problem for this Lax pair is the same as for the Manakov system. The main advancement in this IST for CMBE is calculating the nontrivial spatial propagation of the spectral data and determining the state of the optical medium in the distant future from that in the distant past, which is needed for the complete formulation of the IBVP. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is used to extract the spatio-temporal dependence of the solution from the evolving spectral data. We further derive and analyze several types of solitons and determine their velocity and stability, as well as find dark states of the medium which fail to interact with a given pulse.

Abstract:We develop a fully quantum treatment of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a vapor of three-level $\Lambda$-type atoms. Both the probe and coupling lasers with arbitrary intensities are quantized, and treated on the same footing. In addition to reproducing known results on ultraslow pulse propagation at the lowest order in the ratio of their Rabi frequencies, our treatment uncovers that the atomic medium with EIT exhibits giant Kerr as well as higher order non-linearities. Enhancement of many orders of magnitude is predicted for higher-order refractive-index coefficients.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the time dependent fluorescence spectra (TDFS) of a three-level system in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and coherent population trapping (CPT) configurations. Time dependent fluorescence intensities of Rayleigh and Stokes transitions are studied as a function of the ground state coherence relaxation rate and initial state preparation, and their correlation with the temporal evolution of dark and bright states is established. Linewidths of fluorescence and absorption are compared in different regimes of relaxation rates. The results are used to discuss the characteristic features of EIT and CPT in the domain of fluorescence spectroscopy.

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an inhomogenously broadened medium consisting of Λ-type three-level atoms has been analyzed. It is shown that the Λ system can induce a transparency of the medium when the probe laser and the coupling laser have the same frequency detunings (including zero). Across the EIT window, the radial variation of the strong coupling laser radiation may lead to electromagnetically induced focusing or defocusing of the weak probe laser at separate probe frequency detuning points.

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been realized in atomic systems, but fulfilling the EIT conditions for artificial atoms made from superconducting circuits is a more difficult task. Here we report an experimental observation of the EIT in a tunable three-dimensional transmon by probing the cavity transmission. To fulfill the EIT conditions, we tune the transmon to adjust its damping rates by utilizing the effect of the cavity on the transmon states. From the experimental observations, we clearly identify the EIT and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) regimes as well as the transition regime in between. Also, the experimental data demonstrate that the threshold Omega(AIC) determined by the Akaike information criterion can describe the EIT-ATS transition better than the threshold Omega(EIT) given by the EIT theory.

Abstract:We investigate the time dependence of atom-light and atom-RF field interactions in Rydberg electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) in a room-temperature and heated vapour cell. Quantum-optical transients are observed with rapid onset and dissolution of EIT induced by coupler-light pulses. The formulation and dissolution times of EIT, transient signals, and their dependencies on light intensities and Rydberg-atom density are studied. Simulations of pulsed EIT are performed by solving a time-dependent three-level master equation, whose results are in excellent agreement with experimental observations, including accurately reproducing quantum-optical transients observed at both onset and dissolution. We explore the time-dependent response of EIT to RF fields resonant with a RydbergRydberg transition. An upper limit to the fundamental atom-RF field response time and instantaneous RF detection bandwidth with EIT-based sensors and receivers is established.

Abstract:For a three-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) atomic system, we show that, adding a third driving field coupled to a fourth state, the properties of the weak probe light propagation are greatly changed. Due to the increase of the driving field, when the driving and the coupling detunings are zero, the light propagation can be changed from subluminal to superluminal. Also, the analytical solution exhibiting superluminal group velocity is given at the zero probe detuning.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for guiding light by the modulated electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a three-level atomic system. By using a periodically modulated control field, the linear and nonlinear susceptibilities are changed cyclically for the probe field, which results in the deflection of propagation direction of the probe beam. Propagation direction/path and output position of the probe soliton in the modulated EIT medium can be controlled precisely via adjusting the modulation period of the control field. By changing its initial amplitude, the probe beam can also be guided to a desired output position in the atomic system, driven by a periodic control field. These properties offer a novel way of soliton control, based on the modulated EIT effect. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America
Observation of the Widening and Shifting of EIT Windows in a Quasi-Degenerate Two-Level Atomic System

Abstract:Widening and shifting the EIT windows in a closed transition Fe = 2 ↔ Fg = 3 driven by linearly polarized coupling lights and probed by circularly polarized lights are observed in Cs vapour. It is shown that by increasing the strength of magnetic field i.e. Zeeman splitting in the upper and lower levels, the electromagnetically induced transparency window is divided into two windows and the EIT maxima are shifted away from the zero detuning. In the contrast, if the strength of the magnetic field is fixed and the Rabi frequency of coupling beam is increased, the two EIT windows become wider, and the gap between the two EIT windows becomes smaller and smaller. These effects are also theoretically discussed and they are qualitatively in agreement with the theoretical results.

Abstract:We consider the quantum memory process in general multilevel atomic systems with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We discuss the pulse-matching phenomenon in this general EIT scheme. We also review a recent proposal to create tightly localized stationary pulses by using counterpropagating pump fields. The advantages in creating the stationary pulses with the general EIT system are also discussed.

Abstract:In lasing without inversion, the essential idea is the absorption in cancellation by atomic coherence and interference. Usually this is accomplished in three-level atomic systems. In this work, the interaction of a three-level atom and the external electromagnetic field is discussed by the Maxwell-Schrddinger model. The atom is treated quantum mechanically by the Schrddinger equation, whereas the field is treated classically by the Maxwell's equations. An example is presented to demonstrate the effect of coherent trapping.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to realize the quantum random walk in a coherent five-level atomic system via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). From optical Bloch equations describing the dynamics of the electromagnetic field and atomic population and coherence, we show that two circular-polarized components of a probe field display different dispersion properties and hence acquire different phase-shift modifications when passing through atomic cells. We demonstrate that the quantum coherence and interference owing to the EIT effect result in a low absorption of the probe field and hence provide a possibility of realizing a many-step phase-shift quantum random walk. The scheme may be used to experimentally highlight the characteristics of quantum random walk and lead to a promising application for quantum computation.

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) and the ultraslow light in strongly coupled exciton-phonon systems are investigated by means of the Dyson-Maleev transformation.It is shown that the electromagnetically induced transparency and the ultraslow light can also exist in such systems.The numerical results indicate that the exciton-phonon coupling still plays a key role in the generation of electromagnetically induced transparency,whereas the phase-space filling effects have a little contribution to the EIT.The group velocity of ultraslow light will reduce in terms of the phase-space filling effect.
