Abstract:During its evolution Chinese moral education has developed pronounced ideological aspects. This stems from traditions of first equating politics with morality, phrasing them both in the same language, and then of encouraging correct moral and political relations and behaviours through education. This trend dates back three thousand years to Zhou Gong and continued through Confucius and his followers. From 1949, through the Cultural Revolution and the present transition to a market economy, a similarly unified approach to political, ideological and moral education has been effected through the organizational medium of deyu. As well as providing a historical overview, this paper examines the ideological function and political structure of deyu and the changes that are occurring within it. In the light of current changes in China, deyu is now starting to shift its focus away from ideological education and towards citizenship education. This reflects important changes in core values, to include individualism, economic initiative and consumerism, all of which confront Chinese society and education with distinct challenges and opportunities, and suggest even further reform of deyu during the 21st century.

Abstract:Previous theories of moral development such as those by Piaget and Kohlberg usually focused on the cognitive or rational aspect, and seldom included the affective aspect in their construction. The characteristics of the stages of moral development in the present paper are elaborated with special reference to psychological needs, altruism and human relationships, and justice reasoning. The three stages are: (1) Physical Survival, Selfishness, and Obedience, (2) Love Needs, Reciprocal Altruism, and Instrumental Purpose; and (3) Belongingness Needs, Primary Group Altruism, and Mutual Interpersonal Expectations. At Stage 1, a deep and profound attachment to parents, empathy toward the significant others, and obedience to authorities all contribute to the physical survival of a person at this stage. People at Stage 2 are self-protective, dominant, exploitative, and opportunistic. The need to love and to be loved is gratified on the basis of reciprocal altruism. People at Stage 3 have a strong desire to gratify their belongingness needs to a primary group. They are willing to sacrifice for the benefits of the group at great cost. While the psychological needs and altruism are related to the affective aspect of moral development, the justice reasoning is related to the cognitive aspect. The proposed theoretical model attempts to integrate the affective and cognitive aspects of moral development, and prototypic responses to questions related to hypothetical moral dilemmas are presented to substantiate the proposed stage structures. It is hypothesized that the sequence of these three stages is invariant of person and culture.

Abstract:A core issue in the interdisciplinary study of human morality is its ontogeny in diverse cultures, but systematic, naturalistic data in specific cultural contexts are rare to find. This study conducts a novel analysis of 213 children's socio-moral behavior in a historical, non-Western, rural setting, based on a unique dataset of naturalistic observations from the first field research on Han Chinese children. Using multilevel multinomial modeling, we examined a range of proactive behaviors in 0-to-12-year-old children's peer cooperation and conflict in an entire community in postwar Taiwan. We modeled the effects of age, sex, kinship, and behavioral roles, and revealed complex interactions between these four variables in shaping children's moral development. We discovered linkages between coercive and non-coercive behaviors as children strategically negotiated leadership dynamics. We identified connections between prosocial and aggressive behaviors, illuminating the nuances of morality in real life. Our analysis also revealed gendered patterns and age-related trends that deviated from cultural norms and contradicted popular assumptions about Chinese family values. These findings highlight the importance of naturalistic observations in cultural contexts for understanding how we become moral persons. This re-analysis of historically significant fieldnotes also enriches the interdisciplinary study of child development across societies.

Exploring the issue of a lack of cohesion in moral education: An empirical study in Chinese primary and secondary schools

Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to explore the issue of a perceived lack of cohesion in moral education in mainland China, and place it in an international academic context, by comparing three student cohorts: grade three and grade six in Primary School and the third year in Junior High School. The study employed mixed research methods; utilising the Chinese Code for Primary and Secondary-School Students as a blueprint for designing a student self-assessment survey. A total of 695 questionnaires were obtained from the three student cohorts, in addition to 25 semi-structured teacher interviews. The findings concur with and add richness to existing policy documents and academic sources. They reveal the perceived symptom of a lack of cohesion in moral education, represented by a U-curve phenomenon based on students' self-assessment survey results, and corroborated by teacher interviews, where the middle-cohort students are lagging behind the other two cohorts. These findings are compared to other internationally recorded 'dips' in moral developmental trajectories. The findings indicate two possible explanations for this phenomenon, and suggestions are offered for educators and policy makers on improving cohesion in moral education.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the central role of moral education in the process of character formation of children. Through a literature review review, we investigate the basic and theoretical concepts of moral education, as well as its positive impact on children's character development. An in-depth analysis of the literature shows that moral education includes not only moral norms, but also builds ethical values, empathy, and social responsibility. The research also highlights the linkages between moral education, the moral development of individuals, and their contribution to society more broadly. The results of this study are expected to provide a solid theoretical foundation for further understanding of the importance of moral education in shaping children's character.

Abstract:The moral cognitive developmental theory, inspired by Dewey’s research on progressive moral education and Piaget’s theory on children’s moral cognitive development, is proposed by American moral psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg in the early 20th century. It is proven to be the most influential and effective theory in moral education, which is still widely applied in the contemporary western schools. The current moral education in primary and secondary schools in China is characterized by low efficiency. This article, combined with Kohlberg’s moral cognitive development theory, analyzes the status and causes of inefficient moral education in primary and secondary schools in China since the reforming and opening up policy was adopted, and puts forward the feasible measures to improve the effectiveness of moral education in primary and secondary schools.

Abstract:The present study explores how a moral dilemma discussion method in Chinese classroom settings can help develop some of the foundations of practical wisdom (phronesis). The study context focuses on Morality-and-Law classes in Chinese primary schools, which signal the beginning of the moral education curriculum. The study employs a qualitative approach, by interviewing 12 Morality-and-Law teachers from 10 Chinese Primary Schools to glean insights into the use of moral dilemma discussions in their classrooms-a tried-and-tested method of practical-wisdom cultivation. The findings suggest that while moral dilemma discussions are not alien to those Chinese teachers, they harbour both positive and negative perceptions towards such discussions. Most teachers recognise their value, and they have been used as one of the methods (among others) in those classes. The teachers do not pay much attention to the assessment element but simply use moral dilemmas as material to stimulate classroom discussions and foster students' critical thinking/judgement, which can be seen as laying some of the foundations of practical wisdom from a neo-Aristotelian perspective.

Abstract:An analysis is presented of the problems that have existed for over 20 years in the moral education curriculum in primary schools of China. These include the separation of moral education from children's lives, the moralizing and memorization used as the basic methods of teaching and learning, and the overlaps between courses on society and ideological moral character. The paper then introduces the main innovations in the contemporary reform of the primary moral education curriculum, including lifelong moral education as its theoretical foundation and making the development of children's morality relate to life, with ‘real’ everyday life events as source materials for textbooks. Embodied in the textbooks are some new ideas behind the revised educational objectives, such as putting oneself in another's position, ecological interdependence, ‘win‐win’, dialogue, sharing and diversity. As the curriculum is child centred so the textbooks use a dialogical pedagogy. In conclusion the paper considers ongoing and new challenges for moral education in primary schools to be faced by the curriculum reform.

Abstract:Moral education is a part of talent training. Based on the analysis of the current situation of moral education in colleges and universities, this study systematically analyzes the ideological and political position of local college students, their ideological and moral character, as well as moral characterization through questionnaire, interview, induction, and factor analysis; then, the existing problems in moral education are summarized as follows: the mode of moral education is rigid, students’ subjectivity and subjective initiative are disregarded, spoon-feeding is common, and a single theme is used. The form and content are not relevant to students’ life, and they do not stimulate students’ interest in learning; in addition, the effect of moral education is not evident. Based on the above problems, this study fully considers the students’ subjectivity and subjective initiative. In line with the goal of moral education in colleges and universities, the ARCS model is constructed for moral education. Through pre-class flipped classroom, problem-based learning (PBL) during classes, as well as the summary and reflection after classes, the function of moral education for self-education, self-management, self-reflection, and self-service can be realized.

Abstract:Researchers have been emphasizing the importance of moral emotions for young children's moral self. However, the relationship between children's moral self and moral emotions has never been investigated empirically. The present study examined the relationship between children's self-representations about (im)moral behaviour and moral emotions attributions in a sample of 132 elementary-school children (M age = 8.39 years, SD = 2.50). Participants were presented a newly developed moral self measure, along with a measure of moral emotion attributions. Two dimensions of children's moral self-concept were identified: preference for prosocial behaviour and avoidance of antisocial behaviour. Results revealed a slight decrease in preference for prosocial behaviour with age, as well as an increased correlation between preference for prosocial behaviour and moral emotion attributions. Overall, findings suggest that moral emotions do not play a pivotal role for young children's moral self-concept. Children's moral self-concept becomes increasingly coordinated with moral emotions as they approach adolescence.

Abstract:Dewey's concept of experience is hailed as the first revolution of philosophy. Dewey ontologized experience, and experience became the only object and content of his pragmatic philosophy. Experience is a very complicated concept; it is a sort of presence in sense perception, the subject's mental emotion and desire to will as well as the acting subject itself The meaning of experience is the same as history, life and culture. The unity of experience, material, nature and organism constitute an important feature of Dewey's reconstruction of the concept of experience. Experience is profound rather than shallow. It points to the innermost nature of matters, whereby overcoming traditional experientialists' self-belittling and breaking through traditional materialists' frivolity. Dewey stressed the continuum between experience and nature and incorporated nature and things as parts of experience, which foreshadowed his effect-oriented relativist concept of truth. Organism and environment are connected in all kinds of ways and interact with each other. Therefore, subject and objects, organism and environment, experience and nature constitute an indivisible totality. Opposite to the duality and confrontation of modem philosophy, Dewey's reconstruction of the concept of experience was non-modem in its assimilation, organicity and internal relationships, as the incorporation of the contents of objects, processes, life and history into the concept of experience was breaking through and transcending the framework of modem epistemology which separated knowledge from reality.

Abstract:Taking the increasing implementation and practice of ‘quality‐oriented education’ as the background to the current reform, the paper outlines moral education in the Chinese junior high school over the last 25 years. It offers a brief review of a few theoretical and empirical research projects which have had some influence on the 2003 reform of the course of Ideology and Morality. It describes: three basic principles behind this new curriculum, focusing on the developing lives of students; curriculum characteristics with ideological, humanistic, practical and integrative dimensions; and the objectives of developing feelings, attitudes and value orientations, competencies and knowledge. The curriculum is illustrated by four textbook and class‐based examples of respect for parents, self‐esteem, environmental awareness and being a responsible citizen, which offer some insights into contemporary moral education with distinctive Chinese characteristics. Finally, the paper gives an overview of the significance of the moral education curriculum reform and of its ongoing challenges.
