Abstract:This is a speech delivered at the closing ceremony of The Third International Ibsen Conference in China, which introduces some people and their studies on Ibsen in China, and takes A Doll's House as an example for an ethical analysis. The speech chooses Professor Wang Zhongxiang, Professor Kwok-kan Tam, Professor Knut Brynhildsvoll and others for an evaluation of their studies as the evidence of achievements in the Ibsen studies in the New Period in China. The speech, from the perspective of ethical literary criticism, also analyses A Doll's House as a moral play to raise moral questions and concludes that Ibsen's so-called social problem plays are ethical problem ones.

Abstract:Based on Franco Moretti's conception of distant reading, I propose that world literature is not an object, but is rather an act or event that is temporally and spatially constituted, destined to undergo a process of changes and transformations in different local contexts. World literature should address at least three major issues: first, the otherness of the foreign author or his texts in local context; second, the inventiveness of the specific narratives in the local writings; third, the creative power of the works for their readers and the society they live in. In this article, Ibsen in China is studied from a new perspective of event in world literature. The focus of the analysis is on the event of female protagonists reading A Doll's House in modern Chinese novels. Questions analyzed include: Who are those people reading A Doll's House in modern Chinese novels? How do the Chinese female protagonists perform as Nora and fight for their independence and freedom? What impact do the fictional works have on the New Culture Movement in China? Moreover, how does this study of Ibsen and Nora in China provoke new reflections on world literature?

Abstract:Literature on China's imperial examination(IE) refers to historical documents which record IE system and its operation.It can be understood in a broad or narrow sense.Narrowly or strictly speaking,it refers to independent and specific documents,whereas in a broad sense it includes both independent and un-independent documents.IE literature comes in a great variety and huge amounts and has its own systematicity and value for international scholars on IE but has suffered from deplorable negligence.It is however being increasingly recognized for its value for research rather than being treated as worthless material as it was before.It is argued that IE literature proves a strong pillar which together with other pillars supports the disciplinary structure of IE study and an indispensable basis upon which researchers can build IE study,a specialized field of study with broad prospects for development,into a distinguished academic discipline.

Abstract:Since Henrik Ibsen has a wide international reputation and influence and his plays are read and performed across cultures, translation has played an important role in “establishing” multiple productions of his plays. It is true that Ibsen has been translated in different languages and cultures, and there are actually metamorphosed “Ibsens”, or varying (unalike) versions of his works. According to Walter Benjamin, “since the important works of world literature never find their chosen translators at the time of their origin, their translation marks their stage of continued life” or a sort of “afterlife”. Inspired by Benjamin’s reflections on translation and Damrosch’s emphasis on the role played by translation in constructing world literature, the author lays particular emphasis on the translation of Ibsen’s plays in the Chinese context and deals with different productions of Ibsen’s plays in 21st-century China. The contention here is that such translations and retranslations endow Ibsen and his plays with a “continued” life or “afterlife”, enabling him to remain one of the best-known Western writers, without which he might have become “marginalized” like many of his Scandinavian peers in the Chinese cultural and literary context(s). And it is through such translations and retranslations, both interlingual and intercultural—and even intersemiotic, that there have appeared a multiplicity of Ibsens and variegated productions of his plays in China.

A New Approach To Shakespeare: A Review Of Shakespeare In The Post-War English Drama

Abstract:Taking sixteen Shakespearean adaptations by eight playwrights as the object of study, Chen Hongwei's book Shakespeare in the Post-war English Drama ( published by Peking University Press in April, 2019) carries forth an analysis of the forms of Shakespeare's presence in the Post-War English drama from the aspect of contemporary adaptation theories. In Methodology, the research is an interdisciplinary study which covers drama study, culture study, adaptation theory study and cross-media study. In contents, the book is composed of four parts, including "What is adaptation? Why do we make adaptation?", "Adaptation/rewriting: critical dialogues with Shakespeare," "Variations of Shakespeare's remains in the English drama" and " Who writes Shakespeare?". Through its research, the book argues that though the critical consensus on the Bard's authority has been crumbled in the past decades with his mythical presence being disrupted in every possible way, Shakespeare has never been so vigorously alive in the disguised presence of adaptations in the piles of fragments and shatters that he is reduced to.
Ibsen and Cosmopolitanism and the Adaptation of His Plays in China

Abstract:To deal with Ibsen and his relations with cosmopolitanism should start from the redefinition of the controversial concept of cosmopolitanism. After his re-description of cosmopolitanism in ten forms, the author points out that Ibsen's relations with cosmopolitanism are represented in three aspects: (1) Ibsen's cosmopolitan ideas and diasporic experience; (2) the cosmopolitan subject matters of Ibsen's plays and the global significance of his works; (3) lbsen's global concern and his canonical position in world literature. The play Peer Gynt as the most cosmopolitan work produced by Ibsen is then analyzed from a cosmopolitan perspective. Furthermore, Ibsen's cosmopolitan elements find particular embodiment in the different adaptations and productions of his major plays in China. In short, the author holds that Ibsen not only wrote for his contemporary readers and audience but also for future readers and audience. Similarly, he is not only read and appreciated by his own country fellows but more by people of other countries. That is why Ibsen has such wide international reputation and influence.
Chasing the Ghosts of Ibsen: A computational stylistic analysis of drama in translation

Abstract:Research into the stylistic properties of translations is an issue which has received some attention in computational stylistics. Previous work by Rybicki (2006) on the distinguishing of character idiolects in the work of Polish author Henryk Sienkiewicz and two corresponding English translations using Burrow's Delta method concluded that idiolectal differences could be observed in the source texts and this variation was preserved to a large degree in both translations. This study also found that the two translations were also highly distinguishable from one another. Burrows (2002) examined English translations of Juvenal also using the Delta method, results of this work suggest that some translators are more adept at concealing their own style when translating the works of another author whereas other authors tend to imprint their own style to a greater extent on the work they translate. Our work examines the writing of a single author, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, and these writings translated into both German and English from Norwegian, in an attempt to investigate the preservation of characterization, defined here as the distinctiveness of textual contributions of characters.

Abstract:The 1920s witnessed the maturing of the Chinese spoken drama in terms of both playwriting and performing practices. One of the thematic concerns of the dramas from this period is the independence and emancipation of women, of which Nora, a protagonist in Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, once served as an example. A Doll’s House was at that time one of the most frequently staged foreign plays in China and exerted great influence on playwrights, performance art, and audiences alike. Consequently, quite a few early spoken dramas were modelled on A Doll’s House in terms of plot and structure. Therefore, the development of spoken drama in the 1920s is not only an event of performance, but also a literary event, and in a larger sense, even a cultural event due to the widespread discussions of Nora and her subsequent transformation into a symbol of individualism, feminism and socialism. In this article, the following questions are to be addressed: What did the performances of A Doll’s House in the 1920s look like? How did the early spoken dramas imitate A Doll’s House, especially the plot of Nora’s departure from home? How did the reception of Nora in China become a cultural event? What influence did this event exert on drama, literature and the New Culture Movement at that time?

Abstract:Freedom and responsibility have been two fundamental and interrelated issues of Western moral philosophy. A sketchy overview of modern thought on these issues cannot avoid being oversimplified. But it is perhaps permissible to pinpoint some major contributions from such philosophers as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Sartre and Derrida. Starting with an investigation of the major strands of modern thought of freedom and responsibility, the thesis will then analyze the relationship of freedom and responsibility in Ibsen's plays. Based on a close reading of three Ibsen plays, Brand, A Doll's House and The Lady from the Sea, this essay argues that Ibsen's understanding of responsibility and freedom in these plays undergoes a spiral growing process that is characteristic of Hegel's dialectic.

Abstract:Liu Maosheng's new book The Ethical Expressions of Society and Politics: A Study on George Bernard Shaw's Plays (Published by People's Publishing House in 2019) offers a unique and innovative perspective to the works of George Bernard Shaw by adopting Ethical Literary Criticism as the analytical approach. Based on close reading, the book fully explores the ethical values of Shaw's plays against the backdrop of Victorian literature as a whole, and systematically expounds the unique expression and richness of Shaw's ethical ideals developed in his four phases of play writing, with a special focus on interpretation of society and politics, two fundamental themes in Shaw's plays, and an emphasis on literature's responsibility to reflect reality and its function to educate readers. This books features structural integrity, vigorous logic, sufficient textual evidence and innovative opinions, with both its analytical perspective and the arguments and conclusion drawn being profoundly original. It's a pioneering work in the research of Shaw's play writing which provides a brand-new approach to the study of Shaw's works and serves as successful research model to help us better reflect on Shaw's significant contribution to English Literature.

Abstract:This group of six papers makes respectively different approaches to literary ethical criticism. Professor Nie Zhenhao makes a pioneering and comprehensive exposition of the notion of literary ethical criticism, including its sources, methods, contents, foundations, the applicable areas, practical values and realistic significance. Professor Knut takes Ibsen′s plays for example to discuss not only the moralities in Ibsen′s plays, but also the necessity and importance of literary ethical criticism. Professor Wang Ning talks about Ecocriticism together with literary ethical criticism, providing a good example for combining literary ethical criticism with some other methods of literary criticism. Based on the three phases of human self-recognition and in a comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, Professor Liu Jianjun makes a further interpretation of the ethical method in literary criticism. Professor Qiao Guoqiang speculates inquisitively the definition and ideological foundations of the ethical criticism. He also makes a conceptual debate over the authors, their literary works and their readers in terms of the critical method. Believing that it is three-dimensional and apocalyptical, Professor Zou Jianjun discusses the historical and realistic significances of the ethical method in literary criticism. In brief, all the above-mentioned papers attempt to state that in an era of moral invisibility in literary criticism, the critics should be responsible for moral re-establishment through literary criticism and therefore, to recover or retrieve the moral values in literature. They believe that literary ethical criticism is one of the most important approaches to achieving this end.

Abstract:Little Eyolf is a play that simulates an objective reality in a very narrow episode, which makes it a more classic psychological play than others. This dialogue extends into three acts and takes into its aspects a model of a simple Norwegian family through which the reality lived in other families, and their way of life is transmitted, because Ibsen is the great modern realistic theater, this author deliberately catches up with the exact details through which he can point out the scale of the realism of the work, the consistency of the characters and the exact realistic details all in order to create a realistic work reflecting the social nature in which this child lives and suffers from these many social overlaps. Little Eyolf plays the reason for existence and departure; Ibsen conveys prosperity and tragedy in one house at close Times. He draws a plan for the future family dramatically and realistically that abstracts from those temporary passions and moves everyone to reality in its clear form, making the place of reality higher than imagination and emotions. That Eyolf is the result of a set of causes, the most important of which was his parents' neglect of his own psychological and social needs, and this is what caused the end that Eyolf and the whole family faced. In the end, little Eyolf is a psychological treatment and social simulation of the lived reality, which leads to a set of results at the end of the play represented by tragedy and social-family torment.

Abstract:Lu Xun is the first and also one of the most important Chinese writers who have introduced the Norwegian playwright Ibsen to Chinese readers.Ibsen is one of the major European authors who has made a great impact upon Lu Xun’s literary writings.The True Story of Ah Q bears a lot of similarities with Ibsen’s Peer Gynt.From an intertextual perspective,this essay conducts an analysis and comparison between Gyntian escapism and Ah Qism on the basis of which some negative aspects of the respective national characters are exposed and criticized.It is concluded that Peer and Ah Q actually represent some common psychological and cultural characteristics of humankind,and consequently their images in world literature are of universal value.
