Abstract:A series of neodymium complexes with various modified beta-diketonates and their corresponding gadolinium complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The singlet and triplet energy levels of the coordinated ligands were measured and compared. These complexes emit characteristic Nd3+ light at about 880, 1060, 1330 nm with long-lived lifetimes. The relationship between the structure and photophysical properties has been discussed and the energy transfer process in these complexes has been studied.

Abstract:The single-crystal structure and optical properties of a novel neodymium pentafluoropropionate binuclear complex were studied. The complex showed good radiative properties in DMSO with a high stimulated emission cross-section as 2.36×10−20cm2, which is comparable with some laser glasses.

Abstract:A novel binuclear neodymium complex Nd(CF3COO)(3)center dot(Ph3PO)(2) (Ph3PO: triphenylphosphine oxide) with high stimulated emission cross-section was presented. The molecular structure of the complex was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of the complex in liquid medium were studied. From the absorption and luminescence spectra, the Judd-Ofelt parameters of Nd (CF3COO)(3)center dot(Ph3PO)(2) in phosphorus oxychloride were obtained. Based on the crystal structure, the effects of crystal field and bonding valence properties on three intensity parameters Omega(t)(t = 2, 4, 6) and emission cross-section were analyzed in detail. The emission cross-section of E-4(3/2) -> I-4(11/2) fluorescence transition (2.78 x 10(-2) cm(2)) of the new neodymium compound was higher than those of other Nd(III) complexes and even comparable with some laser glasses. Synthesis, Characterization and Fluorescence of Rare Earth Nitrate Complexes with Triaza-Crown Ether Derivative

Abstract:Four new complexes of rare earths with a triaza-crown ether (L) derived from N3O2-macro cycle 1,12,15-triaza-3, 4: 9,10-dibenzo-5, 8-dioxacycloheptadecane were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, molar conductance, TG-DTA analysis and fluorescence spectra. The composition of the complexes determined as [RE(NO3)3L*3H2O]*H2O (RE=Sm, Eu, Tb and Dy). It is found that Sm3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+ complexes all show strong fluorescence emission in the solid state. Among these complexes, Tb3+ complex has the strongest luminescence intensity. It shows that the ligand L triplet state energy matches 5D4 energy level of Tb3+. In the Eu3+ complex, η(5D0→7F2/5D0→7F1) is 2.6, which indicates that Eu3+ locates at the asymmetric coordination field.

Abstract:A trivalent neodymium ion (Nd3+) complex Nd(PM)(3)(TP)(2) was synthesized, and its optical properties was studied by introducing Judd-Ofelt theory to calculate the radiative transition rate and the radiative decay time of the F-4(3/2) -> (4)l(J), transitions in this Nd(III) complex. The strong emissions of this complex at near-infrared region were owing to the efficient energy transfer from ligands to center metal ion. The potential application of this complex in NIR electroluminescence was studied by fabricating several devices. The maximum NIR irradiance was obtained as 2.1 mW/m(2) at 16.5 V. Abstract:A novel neodymium hepafluorobutyrate complex, Nd(C3F7COO)3·DMPhen (DMPhen: 2, 9-Dimethyl-1, 10-phenanthroline), was synthesized and characterized by UV-Vis-NIR absorption and PL spectra. Optical spectra exhibit the complex possesses typical Nd(III) ion absorption and photoluminescence emission. From the UV-Vis-NIR absorption and luminescence spectra, the Judd-Ofelt parameters (Ω2, Ω4 and Ω6) of the Nd(C3F7COO)3·DMPhen in DMSO were obtained. The stimulated emission cross-section of the emission band at 1.057 μm is 2.6×10-20 cm2, which is higher than that of other Nd(III) complex doped organic systems and even.

Abstract:Luminescence enhancement and quenching of Eu(TTA)(3)center dot 2H(2)O complex in DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide) solution containing silver nanoparticles were observed, which depended on the concentrations of both europium complex and silver nanoparticles. Their origins were discussed based on absorption spectra, excitation and emission spectra, and luminescent decay dynamics. The results indicated that when the concentration of Eu complex was high enough, strong interaction among complex molecules occurred. The presence of Ag nanoparticles definitely decreased the interaction among complex molecules. In the solution containing Ag nanoparticles the electronic-dipole transition rate of D-5(0)-F-7(2) increased due to enhanced local field surrounding Eu3+ ions, while the nonradiative transition rate from D-5(0) decreased owing to decreased resonant energy transfer among europium complex molecules. These two factors lead to the luminescence enhancement of europium complex. As to the luminescent quenching, was attributed to absorption competition between Ag nanoparticles and europium complex at excited wavelength.

Abstract:A liquid solution on the basis of dissolving a novel tetranuclear neodymium complex Nd4(TTA)10O12H22 (HTTA: 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) in polytrifluorochloroethylene oil was presented. The molecular structure of the complex was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of the liquid medium were studied. Enhanced emission was observed at 1064nm when excited at 340nm due to efficient energy transfer from TTA to the Nd3+ ions and the mechanism for energy transfer process was discussed in detail. The obtained fluorescent lifetime was 1.7μs and the quantum yield value was 0.63%, which compare well with some other organic liquid media reported previously. Besides, this liquid shows outstanding properties with no toxicity and causticity, nonvolatility and high stability.

Abstract:Sensitization of metal-centered forbidden transitions is of great significance. Solid MnII-based phosphors with d-d forbidden transition sensitized by CeIII with d-f allowed transition are promising light conversion materials, but the energy transfer mechanism in CeIII-MnII is still in dispute for the uncertainty of distances between metal centers. Herein, for the first time, we explored the energy transfer mechanism in two well-designed luminescent heteronuclear complexes with clear crystal structures, i.e. Ce-N8-Mn and Ce-N2O6-Mn (N8 = 1,4,7,10,13,16,21,24-octaazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane; N2O6 = 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane). Short distances between metal centers facilitate efficient energy transfer from CeIII to MnII in both complexes, resulting in high photoluminescence quantum yield up to unity. After systematic study of the two heteronuclear complexes as well as two reference complexes Ce(N8)Br3 and Ce(N2O6)Br3, we concluded that dipole-quadrupole interaction is the dominant energy transfer mechanism in the heteronuclear complexes.

Abstract:A new europium (III) complex Eu(HFNH)(3)Phen (HFNH: 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6-heptafluoro-1-(2-naphthyl) hexane-1,3-dione; phen: 1, 10-phenanthroline) was synthesized and its triboltuninescent phenomenon was observed. Photoluminescence and triboluminescence spectra were successfully determined. The most intense triboluminescent emission originates front the transition of the, central Eu3+ ion from D-5(0) level to F-7(2) level. The triboluminescent spectrum is basically similar to that of photoluminescence, which correlates with the disorders of F atoms.

Abstract:Terbium(III), yttrium(III), and neodymium(III) complexes with 4-aminobenzoic acid have been co-doped into silica matrix. For the samples, the characteristic emissions of terbium(III) increase obviously with the addition of yttrium(III) complex, while the reverse is true with the addition of neodymium(III) complex. Compared with terbium(III) complex doped silica sample, the photoacoustic signal of the ligand decreases for terbium(III)-yttrium(III) complexes co-doped sample, and increases for terbium(III)-neodymium(III) complexes co-doped sample. The fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes of the samples have been determined. The co-fluorescence mechanism has been discussed from radiative and nonradiative relaxations. The nephelauxetic parameters and photoacoustic branching vectors of neodymium(III) in the silica samples have also been calculated. The spectral result indicates that heteronuclear complexes may form in the silica matrix upon a suitable heat treatment. The co-fluorescence effect found in the inorganic matrix can contribute to the better design and application of rare earths containing fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Four tridentate europium(III) complexes containing a diphenylphosphoryl group are prepared with strong bonding between the ligands and centered ion, convinced by crystal structures. Compared to their parent bidentate complexes, the tridentate complexes display improved and exceptionally high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) in powder (all over 80%, best 91%), as well as in a CH2Cl2 solution and poly(methyl methacrylate) films, benefiting from compact, stable, and saturated coordination.

Abstract:A series of lanthanide complexes Ln(tfnb)3dafone, Ln(hfth)3dafone and Ln(pfnd)3dafone (Ln=Er, Nd and Yb) with fluorinated-ligand 1-(2-naphthyl)-4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-butanedionate (Htfnb), 4,4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluoro-1-(2-thienyl)hexane-1,3-dione (Hhfth) and 4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,10-pentadecafluoro-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)decane-1,3-dione (Hpfnd) served as main sensitizers, respectively, and 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one (dafone) as the synergistic ligand were synthesized. Upon excitation at the maximum absorption of the ligands, the complexes all show the characteristic near-infrared (NIR) luminescence of the corresponding Ln3+ ions, which is due to efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the central Ln3+ ions via an antenna effect. Moreover, an indirect excitation model is proposed and the influence of ligands on the luminescence properties of the complexes is further discussed.

Abstract:The luminescence properties and energy transfer of some rare earth complexes were extensively studied by laser induced fluorescence technique at room temperature. The excitation spectra of central ion ( Eu3+) was obtained. The emission spectra from the triplet state and the singlet state of ligand ( DBM) were obtained. It was found that there exists a dip peak in the emission spectra of Eu(DBM)(3).2H(2)O complex because the transition D-5(2) <-- F-7(0) of the central ion Eu3+ absorbs the emission of the ligand DBM (dibenzoylmethane).

Abstract:Near-infrared (NIR) luminescent ternary and hydrated binary neodymium β-diketonates emitting at ca. 1330 nm are presented. The effects of ligand moieties on the photoluminescence properties of Nd3+ ions are discussed. Moreover, the neodymium organic complex neodymium tris(2-theonyltrifluoroacetonate)bis(triphenylphosphine oxide), Nd(TTA)3(TPPO)2, which has the best photoluminescence properties among all investigated neodymium complexes, is incorporated into vinyltriethoxysilane-derived ORMOSIL (organically modified silicate) film by a multistep sol–gel process. The Nd doping concentration was up to 5 mol% related to Si. The spectroscopic results about as-doped ORMOSIL films indicate that the ligands around Nd3+ ions indeed shield effectively Nd3+ ions from luminescence-quenching impurities in the host matrix, such as OH groups.
A Europium Complex With Excellent Two-Photon-Sensitized Luminescence Properties

Abstract:We report the synthesis and excellent two-photon-sensitized luminescence properties of a new complex [Eu(tta)(3)dmbpt] (tta = henoyltrifluoroacetonate; dmbpt=2-(N,N-diethyl-2,6-dimethylanilin-4-yl)-4,6-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-l-yl)-1,3,5-triazine) that exhibits the highest efficiency of lanthanide luminescence when excited by near-infrared (NIR) laser pulses (action cross section of two-photon-excited fluorescence (5 X OF: 85 GM at 812 nm and 56 GM at 842 nm; 1GM = 10(-50) cm(4) s photon(-1) molecule). Compared to a previously reported [Eu(tta)(3)dpbt] complex, (dpbt = 2-(N,N-diethylanilin-4-yl)-4,6-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine), [Eu(tta)(3)dmbpt] has two excess methyl groups at the 2,6-positions of the phenyl ring. Crystallographic data of dmbpt show that the 2,6-dimethyl substitutes bring about a significant twist in the conformation of the diethylamino group compared to that in dpbt, which severely influences the conjugation in the ground state between the electron lone pair of N in the -N(CH2-)(2) moiety and the aromatic electron system in dmbpt. The large two-photon absorption (TPA) cross section of dmbpt is mainly derived from its large static dipole moment difference between the So and the S, states, which is partly responsible for the high capability of two-photon-sensitized luminescence of [Eu(tta)(3)dmbpt]. The broader two- and single-photon excitation windows and the superior two-photon-sensitized luminescent properties in the long-wavelength NIR region of [Eu(tta)(3)dmbpt] compared to [Eu(tta)(3)dpbt] are also explained according to the calculated results and twisted structure.

Abstract:Lanthanide-based upconversion molecular complexes have potential application in diverse fields and attracted considerable research interest in recent years. However, the similar coordination reactivity of lanthanide ions has constrained the designability of target molecule with well-defined structure, and many attempts obtained statistical mixtures. Herein, an ion-paired Yb-Eu heteronuclear complex [Eu(TpPy)2][Yb(ND)4] (TpPy = tris[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazolyl]hydroborate, ND = 3-cyano-2-methyl-1,5-naphthyridin-4-olate) was designed and synthesized. Thanks to the radius difference between Eu3+ (1.07 Å) and Yb3+ (0.98 Å) ions, the hexadentate TpPy ligand was selected to coordinate with Eu3+ and the Yb3+ with a smaller radius was chelated by bidentate ND ligand. As a result, the sites of Eu3+ and Yb3+ in the complex can be clarified by high-resolution mass spectrometry and single-crystal structure analysis. Upon the excitation of Yb3+ at 980 nm, the upconversion emission of Eu3+ was realized through a cooperative sensitization process. Furthermore, [Eu(TpPy)2][Yb(ND)4] demonstrated excellent photostability during continuous high-power density 980 nm laser irradiation, with a LT95 (the time to 95% of the initial emission intensity) of 420 minutes. This work provides the first example of a pure ion-paired Yb-Eu heteronuclear complex upconversion system and may bring insights into rational design of lanthanide-based upconversion molecular complexes.
