Abstract:Large scale Monte Carlo simulations are performed in order to clarify thermodynamic properties of vortex states of extremely type-II, layered superconductors. The first-order normal to superconductivity transition is observed accompanied by the melting of the flux-line lattice. If the magnetic field is applied parallel to the layer, there exists a critical field above which the melting becomes continuous. Dynamics of current-driven vortices in a random potential has also been investigated and it is found that for certain currents the moving Bragg glass melts first into moving smectic and then to liquid.
Non-equilibrium Phase Transitions in Superconducting System

Abstract:The non-equilibrium phase transitions of vortex matter in type II superconductor are studied within three-dimension anisotropic XY model by resistively-shunted junction(RSJ) dynamics.It is found that the static vortex glass phase can be transformed into the moving vortex glass in the presence of external current.At low temperature,the system undergoes three phase transitions.With the increase of the current,from the moving vortex glass,the system is first driven to the moving Bragg glass,then to the moving Smectic,and finally melts to the moving liquid.

Abstract:In this paper the macroscopic condition for dissipationless current in conductors is investigated and a set of improved electromagnetic equations are proposed. With these equations we show that the dissipation is particularly relative to free volume charges in conductors that originate from self-Hall-effect. The steadily normal current coexists with free volume charges and the steadily superconducting current doesn't. Zero Hall coefficient is a candidate condition for nonexistence of free volume charges in conductors and a possible mechanism is exciton conduction or electron-hole pairing.

Abstract:A superconductor placed in a weak magnetic field and cooled down through the transition temperature expels magnetic flux. This phenomenon, known as the Meissner effect, is arguably the most essential property of superconductors. Although macro phenomenological theories and micro theory of superconductors are available, there is still lack of simple and clear clarification of the mechanism of Meissner Effect from macro electromagnetic perspective by now. In this study, a vector magnetic circuit theory is proposed to scrutinize the limitations of the classical electromagnetism theory. A thorough analysis is conducted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms governing the Meissner effect in superconductors with the application of vector magnetic circuit theory and time-varying magductance, as well as to discern the distribution of screening currents of the superconducting. The utilization of the vector magnetic circuit theory facilitates the successful differentiation between the perfect conductor and the superconductor under field-cooled conditions. Finally, a closed superconducting coil experimental platform is constructed to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed theory. This experimental support is of paramount importance for theoretical research and engineering applications of superconductors and provides a reliable foundation for future investigations into the magnetic circuit behavior and magnetic circuit characteristics specific to superconducting materials.

Abstract:When first proposed in 1957, the BCS theory for superconductivity, which explained the quasi-totality of its thermodynamic and transport properties, was greeted with great circumspection, before it became the play ground of particle physicists, who largely contributed to understand the deep physics behind this phenomenon. In the course of this undertaking, revolutionizing new concepts in physics were brought to light, such as (i) the "physical significance of the phase" of a quantum mechanical wave function whose role in force-transmitting gauge fields is to control the interaction between elementary particles in a current conserving manner (ii) "spontaneous symmetry breaking" and its related to it collective Nambu-Goldstone modes, which encode the basic symmetry properties of a quantum vacuum and the associated to them conserved quatities, (iii) The "Anderson-Higgs mechanism" and its associated to it, but so far experimentally unconfirmed "Higgs field", which provides the introduction of massive force transmitting gauge fields and ultimately the mass of elementary particles. These concepts were vital in consolidating the standard model for elementary particles and presented the final answer to what distinguishes a superconducting from a non-superconducting state: "electromagnetic gauge symmetry breaking", whatever the microscospic mechanism for that might be. We illustrate here how these concepts gradually emerged, once the basic features, which characterize superconductivity - the Meissner-Ochsenfeld magnetic field screening and the fundamental London equations explaining them in a phenomenological way - were established.

Abstract:A classical SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in (3 + 1)- dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime is believed to be dual to a p-wave superconductor in (2 + 1)- dimensional flat spacetime. In order to calculate the superconducting coherence length xi of the holographic superconductor near the superconducting phase transition point, we make a perturbative study of the gravity theory analytically. The superconducting coherence length xi is found to be proportional to (1 - T/T-c)(-1/2) near the critical temperature T-c. We also obtain the magnetic penetration depth lambda proportional to (T-c - T)(1/2) by adding a small external homogeneous magnetic field. The results agree with the Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Abstract:The transition from normal state to superconductive state is a condensation (Bose-Einstein condensation) process. As an example of Bose-Einstein condensation, the condensation process of superconductivity is investigated in detail. The basic unit of superconductivity is condensation circuit, which should contain 4m+2 (m=1,2,...) electrons (holes). The perfect explanation for no resistance and complete diamagnetism are given by using condensation circuit. The quantum mechanics equation of superconductive state is constructed, and energy level equation of superconductive quantum state is given. The later equation has simple form (I is the unit matrix, A is the adjacent matrix), with deep topological meanings. The phase transition from normal state to superconductive state is irreversible. The irreversible process is analyzed and discussed in detail. The temperature region of superconductive state is calculated. The simplest structure of superconductor circuit is a condensation circuit which is composed of a series of 3-4-element-circuits (called lantern series structure). It is theoretically proved that the room temperature superconductivity can be realized by using polylayer oxide structure. The experimental frame of room temperature superconductivity is suggested.

Abstract:In the first part of this article we review the theory of flux motion in conventional superconductors. We then describe the recent developments in the theory of vortex motion in the mixed state of high- superconductors. In particular, a unified theory of vortex motion in the presence of thermal fluctuations and pinning centres is introduced in detail. Applications of this theory are presented to account for such experimentally observed phenomena as the scaling behaviour, sign reversal of the Hall resistivity and properties of the complex resistivity. Moreover, theoretical investigations on the thermomagnetic effects such as the Nernst and Seebeck effects, and the Ettinghausen effect are also addressed. Such an analysis using the single-vortex-motion model could provide an understanding of many physical properties of high- superconductors.

Abstract:The dynamics of a two-dimensional superconductor under a constant electric field E is studied by using the gauge-gravity correspondence. The pair breaking current induced by E first increases to a peak value and then decreases to a constant value at late times, where the superconducting gap goes to zero, corresponding to a normal conducting phase. The peak value of the current is found to increase linearly with respect to the electric field. Moreover, the nonlinear conductivity, defined as an average of the conductivity in the superconducting phase, scales as similar to E-2/3 when the system is close to the critical temperature T-c, which agrees with predictions from solving the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation. Away from T-c, the E-2/3 scaling of the conductivity still holds when E is large.
A Holographic model for Non-Relativistic Superconductor

Abstract:We build a holographic description of non-relativistic system for superconductivity in strongly interacting condensed matter via gauge/gravity duality. We focus on the phase transition and give an example to show that a simple gravitational theory can provide a non-relativistic holographical dual description of a superconductor. There is also a critical temperature like the relativistic case, below which a charged condensation field appears by a second order phase transition and the (DC) conductivity becomes infinite. We also calculated the frequency dependent conductivity.

Abstract:Spin superconductivity results from the condensation of spin-triplet but charge neutral particles (e.g., triplet excitons). We present a Laplace-type equation describing electrostatic properties of spin superconductors. With the phenomenological equations obtained, we show that there exists an electric “Meissner effect” against the spatial variation of the electric field along the magnetic moment direction, in particular, ( ŝ ·∇)( ŝ · E ). Several distinctive characteristics of this electric “Meissner effect” emerge in spin superconductors. Firstly, the variation of the electric field ( ŝ ·∇)( ŝ · E ) has an abrupt decrease at the boundary, which is analogous to the screen effect for electric field E in a uniform dielectric material. Secondly, the super-spin current distributes inside or near the boundaries of a spin superconductor, which depends on the magnitude of gradient for the external driven electric field.

Abstract:Based on a microscopic model, we study the interplay betweensuperconductivity and antiferromagnetism in a multi-layered system, where twosuperconductors are separated by an antiferromagnetic region. Within aself-consistent mean-field theory, this system is solved numerically. We findthat the antiferromagnetism in the middle layers profoundly affects thesupercurrent flowing across the junction, while the phase difference across thejunction influences the development of antiferromagnetism in the middle layers.This study may not only shed new light on the mechanism for high-T_csuperconductors, but also bring important insights to buildingJosephson-junction-based quantum devices, such as SQUID and superconductingqubit.

Abstract:Navier-Stokes and Maxwell equations have been invented for fluid dynamics and electromagnetic systems, respectively, for centuries. The development of Navier-Stokes and Maxwell equations for homogeneous materials seems to be mature. However, when there is a phase interface, a coupling theory for the mass transport with the propagation of electromagnetic fields remains an open question. In the current work, we present a fundamental theory for the thermodynamics and the kinetics for mass transport and electromagnetic wave propagation in non-uniform system when an interface is present. We will demonstrate that Maxwell-Ampere equation, Lorenz force, and Gauss' law for magnetic field all have to be modified at the phase interface. We expect that the modified Lorenz force and Maxwell equations will shed light on high-temperature superconductivity, where the coupling of mass effect, such as thermal noise, with electromagnetic fields is necessary.

Abstract:The thermodynamical phenomenological theory of magnetically active superconducting materials and magnetic-superconducting heterostructures is presented. The materials may exhibit arbitrarily strong anisotropy, parametric or structural. Exact anisotropic similarity transformations are found for both the continuum and layered hybrid systems.
A holographic superconductor forced through interactions

Abstract:We propose a novel mechanism to achieve superconductivity at zero chemical potential, within the holographic framework. Extending previous construction of the holographic superconductors, we consider an Einstein-Maxwell system coupled with two interacting scalars in Anti-de Sitter space. One of the scalar fields is charged and therefore, interacts non-trivially with the gauge field, while the other is uncharged. We find that, if we turn on a boundary source for the uncharged scalar field, it forces the condensation of the charged scalar, leading to a superconducting phase in the dual boundary theory. The condensation occurs at a certain critical value of the source, depending on the value of the chemical potential, which can even be zero. We work out the complete phase diagram of this scenario. We further corroborate the existence of superconductivity at zero chemical potential, through a fluctuation analysis on our solution. Notably, the conductivity of the system, as a function of probing frequency, exhibits characteristics of usual holographic superconductors. We also investigate how these properties of the system changes, as we vary the interaction strength between the scalar fields. Our results indicate a controlled mechanism to manipulate the phase transition temperature of superconductors with strongly coupled microscopics.

Electromagnetic response of dense quark matter around color-superconducting phase transition and QCD critical point

Abstract:We explore how the electric conductivity and associated relaxation time are modified near the QCD critical point and the phase transition to a color superconducting phase using the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with finite current quark masses. We give a comprehensive account of the nature of the soft modes associated with these phase transitions and how they affect the photon self-energy when the system approaches these phase transitions in a combined way with an emphasis on the common and different aspects in the two transitions. The formalism developed for describing the paraconductivity in metallic superconductors is used for the analysis of the photon self-energy. We show that the transport coefficients calculated from the self-energy show anomalous enhancements in both cases with different critical exponents for the individual transitions. We briefly discuss the possibility of detecting the enhancements in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions

A THz Time-Domain Susceptibility for Superconductors Including Strong-Current Effects

Abstract:Finite-difference time-domain methods are increasingly being used to develop, model and analyze the response of materials, including engineered metamaterials that may contain superconductors. Though simple and useful expressions for the time-domain susceptibility exist for basic metals and dielectrics, the time-domain response for a superconductor has not been developed, mainly because the frequency-dependent expressions themselves are rather complex. In this paper we present a simple approximate expression for the time-domain susceptibility of a superconductor for the hbar/2Delta time scale (where Delta is the BCS energy gap) that fulfills causality requirements, and demonstrate its ability to model the transmission and reflection of a fully-gapped superconductor in the THz region. By allowing Delta to be a function of current, we also show how this model function can be used to describe nonlinear microwave response in superconductors.
Gauge-invariant microscopic kinetic theory of superconductivity in response to electromagnetic fields

Abstract:Within a gauge-invariant microscopic kinetic theory, we study the electromagnetic response in the superconducting states. Both superfluid and normal-fluid dynamics are involved. We predict that the normal fluid is present only when the excited superconducting velocity $v_s$ is larger than a threshold $v_L=|\Delta|/k_F$. Interestingly, with the normal fluid, we find that there exists friction between the normal-fluid and superfluid currents. Due to this friction, part of the superfluid becomes viscous. Therefore, a three-fluid model: normal fluid, non-viscous and viscous superfluids, is proposed. For the stationary magnetic response, at $v_s<v_L$ with only the non-viscous superfluid, the Meissner supercurrent is excited and the gap equation can reduce to Ginzburg-Landau equation. At $v_s{\ge}v_L$, with the normal fluid, non-viscous and viscous superfluids, in addition to the directly excited Meissner supercurrent in the superfluid, normal-fluid current is also induced through the friction drag with the viscous superfluid current. Due to the normal-fluid and viscous superfluid currents, the penetration depth is influenced by the scattering effect. In addition, a modified Ginzburg-Landau equation is proposed. We predict an exotic phase in which both the resistivity and superconducting gap are {\em finite}. As for the optical response, the excited ${v_s}$ oscillates with time. When $v_s<v_L$, only the non-viscous superfluid is present whereas at $v_s{\ge}v_L$, normal fluid, non-viscous and viscous superfluids are present. We show that the excited normal-fluid current exhibits the Drude-model behavior while the superfluid current consists of the Meissner supercurrent and Bogoliubov quasiparticle current. Due to the friction between the superfluid and normal-fluid currents, the optical conductivity is captured by the three-fluid model. ......

The field theory of a superconductor with repulsion

Abstract:A superconductor emerges as a condensate of electron pairs, which bind despite their strong Coulomb repulsion. Eliashberg's theory elucidates the mechanisms enabling them to overcome this repulsion and predicts the transition temperature and pairing correlations. However, a comprehensive understanding of how repulsion impacts the phenomenology of the resulting superconductor remains elusive. We present a formalism that addresses this challenge by applying the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation to an interaction including instantaneous repulsion and retarded attraction. We first decompose the interaction into frequency scattering channels and then integrate out the fermions. The resulting bosonic action is complex and the saddle point corresponding to Eliashberg's equations generally extends into the complex plane and away from the physical axis. We numerically determine this saddle point using the gradient descent method, which is particularly well-suited for the case of strong repulsion. We then turn to consider fluctuations around this complex saddle point. The matrix controlling fluctuations about the saddle point is found to be a non-Hermitian symmetric matrix, which generally suffers from exceptional points that are tuned by different parameters. These exceptional points may influence the thermodynamics of the superconductor. For example, within the quadratic approximation the upper critical field sharply peaks at a critical value of the repulsion strength related to an exceptional point appearing at $T_c$. Our work facilitates the mapping between microscopic and phenomenological theories of superconductivity, particularly in the presence of strong repulsion. It has the potential to enhance the accuracy of theoretical predictions for experiments in systems where the pairing mechanism is unknown.
