Thermal Performance of Shape-Stabilized Phase-Change Materials

Abstract:Shapestabilized phasechange materials have important applications in thermal storage and the heating of buildings. High density polyethylene (HDPE) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) were used to make shapestabilized phasechange materials as construction support materials. A mixture of shapestabilized phasechange material and concrete was prepared. This paper analyzes the material uniformity and stability as well as the critical mass fraction of paraffin required in the materials. The thermal performance of the shapestabilized phasechange materials and the mixture of shapestabilized phasechange material and concrete were investigated using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The physical structures of the materials were studied using a scanning electron microscope. The experimental results show that the shapestabilized phasechange material has good thermal performance and stability with HDPE as the supporting and encapsulating material. The apparent specific heats of the shapestabilized phasechange material and the mixture with concrete can be much higher than of the concrete alone. 

Abstract:With the growingly serious energy crisis and the dramatically increasing greenhouse gas emission worldwide, thermal energy storage has been attracting extensive attention for its application in re-regeneration energy, which provides a perfect solution to coordinate the mismatch between energy supply and demand. Organic phase change materials are the most widely used materials for thermal energy storage, but the inherent disadvantages drastically impede their further application, such as low thermal conductivity and leakage. Previous research shows that carbon-based scaffold can effectively prevent the leakage during phase transition attributing to the capillary force and the surface tension between the phase change material and the micro-channel surface. The porous structure provides abundant heat transfer areas, and the scaffold itself is perfect heat transfer media. It makes the heat transfer greatly enhanced by combining with carbon-based matrix. This composite shows huge potential for promoting the efficiency of thermal management and energy conversion. This paper gives a state-to-art review about the development of shape-stabilized composite phase change material with carbon-based matrix as the supporting material for organic phase change material including the fabrication and thermal property of the composite phase change material, and the newest application of the composite.

Abstract:Shape-stabilized composite phase change materials composed of sebacic acid (SA) and MCM-41 were prepared by a facile blending and impregnating method. Various characterization techniques were carried out to characterize their structural and thermal properties, including thermogravimetry (TG) analyses and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy. The XRD and FT-IR results indicated the interactions between SA and MCM-41, such as the capillary force and the hydrogen bonding, resulting in the confined crystallization process. As a result, the SA that was confined was amorphous. The TG analysis results showed that the presence of MCM-41 practically resulted in an overlapping of the two decomposition stages. The DSC analysis demonstrated that a decrease in the SA content was accompanied by a continuous decrease in the melting point and phase change enthalpy of the composites.

Abstract:In order to obtain stable phase change composites with a high PEG load and enthalpy, a series of polyethylene glycol (PEG) based phase change composites with different mesoporous materials (active carbon and silica molecular sieves) were prepared by a simple approach. Various characterization techniques were carried out to investigate the properties of the composites. It was observed that both the porous characteristics and surface properties of the mesoporous stabilizers combined affected the crystallinity and phase change behavior of PEG. Among the various composites, PEG/AC PCMs with 80 wt% of PEG had the largest latent heat, a relatively low melting point, the least supercooling and a higher heat storage efficiency. This study will provide insight into the fabrication of stabilized polymer based high performance phase change systems for heat storage application. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The shapestabilized thermal energy storage phase change composite material is presented. The properties of thermal energy storge material include melting point, the heat of fusion, thermal stability and microstructure are investigated. The shapestabilized thermal energy storage phase change composite material is composed of thermal energy storage material and solid skeleton material by physical adsorption. The Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) was used to determine melting point and heat of fusion of thermal energy storage material. The thermogravimetry(TG) instrument was used to determine the thermal stability of the thermal energy storage material. The microstructure of the thermal energy storage material is viewed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results show that the material has higher latent heat and better thermal stability, so it can be used in thermal energy storage and heat recovery system.

Abstract:Cross-linked shape-stabilized phase change materials(STPCM) with different gel contents were prepared with high-density polyethylene(HDPE) and 1∶1 blend of HDPE and low-density polyethylene(LDPE) as matrices.The relationship between the gel content of the materials and the content of the cross-linker-dicumyl peroxide(DCP) was discussed.The stabilities of the materials were investigated by circulation experiments.The thermal properties of the cross-linked STPCM were measured by DSC.The result shows that cross-linking can improve the stability of STPCM with the formation of the network,which will prevent the paraffin from diffusing to the outside.HDPE/LDPE blend is more suitable to encapsulate the phase change materials than HDPE.The phase change temperature and phase change heat will not be influenced by the gel extent.The addition of porous filler,for example,diato-(mite),can improve the stability of the material further.
Preparation and Thermal Properties of High Performance Shape-Stabilized Phase Change Composites Using Stearic Acid and Expanded Graphite

Abstract:A modified method is proposed to prepare shape-stabilized phase change composites by employing "heating adsorption of liquid stearic acid (SA) into expanded graphite (EG) matrix and compressing stable-shape composite". Sixteen samples with different EG contents and packed densities are prepared using SA as the phase change material and EG as porous matrix. The microstructures, thermal properties and thermal stabilities of different EG/SA samples are analyzed and investigated. Scanning electron microscopy is first used to observe the microstructures of EG/SA samples and the results show that SA is well dispersed into the graphite flakes and the laminar structures become more inerratic with increasing packed density. The data obtained from differential scanning calorimetry show that the EG/SA composites nearly have no supercooling problem. Moreover, the addition of EG and compressing operation have negligible effect on the latent heat and phase change temperature of pure SA. Hot-disk thermal constants analyzer is used to evaluate the effect of EG content and packed density on the thermal conductivity and the anisotropy of the EG/SA samples, including axial and radial thermal conductivity.The results show that both axial and radial thermal conductivity can be enhanced significantly by using the additive of EG, and the radial thermal conductivity is as high as 23.77 W·m-1·K-1. The difference between axial and radial thermal conductivity becomes more remarkable by increasing the packed density, and the largest difference reaches 5.4 times. Finally, the thermal stability of EG/SA samples is evaluated by repeating charging and discharging processes of SA. The samples with relatively high density or low EG content are susceptible to liquid leak. However, the thermal stability of EG/SA composites can be regulated by optimizing the combination of EG content and packed density. The shape-stabilized phase change composites present better comprehensive performance with EG content about 25% and packed density about 950 kg·m-3. In comparison with the traditional method for preparing shape-stabilized phase change composite, the proposed method can improve the overall thermal performance of composites, and the thermal conductivity can be enhanced more than 130 times higher than that of pure SA.

Abstract:In this study, tin tetrachloride and sodium polyacrylate were combined in a ratio of 5:14 to control the preparation of porous carbon materials using a template method. Then, paraffin was used as the organic phase change materials (PCMs), porous carbon was used as the support material, and four proportions of paraffin/porous carbon shape-stabilized PCMs were prepared by mixed grinding - heating method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS) results showed that paraffin was adsorbed by the pore structure of porous carbon. X-ray diffraction (XRD), LRS and FT-IR analyses indicated that the shape-stabilized PCMs is chemically stable. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the PCMs has a fusion enthalpy of 35 J/g, and the thermogravimetric analyser (TG) showed that the shape-stabilized PCMs has a stable thermal performance. Finally, porous carbon can improve the phase transition rate of the shaped-stabilized PCMs.

Abstract:Triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) was modified by hydrogen silicone oil (SO) via hydrosilylation reaction, generating the original TAIC-SO (TS) intermediate. After the cross-linking polymerization of TS (PTS), the shape-stabilized phase change materials (PCMs) consisting of -octadecane and silicone-modified supporting matrix were first synthesized by an in situ reaction. Remarkably, the novel three-dimensional PTS network effectively prevents the leakage of -octadecane during its phase transition, solving the prominent problem of solid-liquid PCMs in practical applications. Moreover, -octadecane is uniformly dispersed in the continuous and high-strength cross-linked network, contributing to excellent thermal reliability and structural stability of PTS/-octadecane (TSO) composites. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis of the optimal TSO composite indicates that melting and freezing temperatures are 29.05 and 22.89 °C, and latent heats of melting and freezing are 130.35 and 129.81 J/g, respectively. After comprehensive characterizations, the shape-stabilized TSO composites turn out to be promising in thermal energy storage applications. Meanwhile, the strategy is practical and economical due to its advantages of easy operation, mild conditions, short reaction time, and low energy consumption.

Abstract:Advanced phase change energy storage technology can solve the contradiction between time and space energy supply and demand and improve energy efficiency. It is considered one of the most effective strategies to utilize various renewable energy in energy saving and environmental protection. Solid-liquid phase change materials (PCMs) have become critical in developing thermal energy storage (TES) technology because of their high energy storage density, high latent heat, and excellent constant temperature performance during phase change. However, volume expansion, leakage, and low thermal conductivity during phase change are the main problems hindering the development of phase change materials. To overcome these inherent problems and improve their thermophysical properties, it has been identified as an effective way to construct composite phase change materials (ss-PCMs) with stable shapes by encapsulating PCMs with porous materials, which can effectively prevent the leakage of solid-liquid phase change and improve the heat transfer performance of ss-PCMs. This paper reviews the main research progress of porous support materials (such as metal foam, porous polymer, carbon-based three-dimensional porous materials, porous ceramic materials, etc.) as ss-PCMs supports to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of porous materials. The effects of different porous materials on the thermophysical properties of PCMs, such as thermal conductivity, latent heat, phase transition temperature, undercooling, shape stability, thermal cycle stability, and chemical compatibility, were introduced in detail. In addition, the applications of different porous material-based composite phase change materials in various industries are summarized. Finally, the research topics and challenges of porous materials in the future development of ss-PCMs are summarized and prospected.

Shape-stabilized Phase Change Materials Based on Polyethylene Glycol/porous Carbon Composite: the Influence of the Pore Structure of the Carbon Materials

Abstract:The phase change behaviors of polyethylene glycol (PEG)/porous carbon composites are extensively studied. Three types of shape-stabilized PCMs were prepared using expanded graphite (EG), active carbon (AC) and ordered mesoporous carbon (CMK-5) as supporting materials with various pore structures. They have distinct influences on the phase change behaviors of PEG/porous carbon composites. The highest stabilized PEG content is 70 wt% for AC and 90% for both EG and CMK-5. The phase change enthalpy and the PEG crystallinity increases in the order AC < CMK-5 < EG at the same PEG content in the composite. The study suggests that pores with micrometer size exhibit the same level of shape stabilization ability as the pores with nanometer size, while being able to minimize the enthalpy loss due to the interactions between the pores and the PEG chains. This study will provide insights into the design of composite PCMs through tailoring the pore structures. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In order to overcome the difficulty of conventional phase change materials (PCMs) in packaging, the shape-stabilized PCMs are proposed to be used in the electronic device thermal control. However, the conventional shape-stabilized PCMs have the drawback of lower thermal conductivity, so a new shape-stabilized PCM with high thermal conductivity, which is suitable for thermal control of electronic devices, is prepared. The thermal properties of n-octadecane-based shape-stabilized PCM are tested and analyzed. The heat storage/release performance is studied by numerical simulation. Its thermal control effect for electronic devices is also discussed. The results show that the expanded graphite (EG) can greatly improve the thermal conductivity of the material with little effect on latent heat and phase change temperature. When the mass fraction of EG is 5%, thermal conductivity has reached 1.76 W/(m K), which is over 4 times than that of the original one. Moreover, the material has larger latent heat and good thermal stability. The simulation results show that the material can have good heat storage/release performance. The analysis of the effect of thermal parameters on thermal control effect for electronic devices provides references to the design of phase change thermal control unit. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A series of shape-stabilized phase change materials (SSPCMs) were prepared by melt blending with paraffin and polymer alloys. The polymer alloys used in this work are high-density polyethylene (HOPE) with various elastomers including ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (EPDM), three styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymers (SBS) with different S/B ratios and configurations and styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymer (SIS), These alloys were used as matrices to encapsulate and support paraffin. Their thermal properties, cyclic stability and mechanical properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), cyclic stability test and tensile test respectively. The results indicate that these alloys are able to encapsulate paraffin well with latent heats. of 80-100 J/g and mass loss of 8-10% after 100 cycles. Crosslinking of the matrices was carried out and its effects on tensile property and cyclic stability were explored. Proper crosslinking can increase the tensile strength without sacrificing the cyclic stability. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Biomass-Based Shape-Stabilized Composite Phase-Change Materials with High Solar-Thermal Conversion Efficiency for Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract:To alleviate the increasing energy crisis and achieve energy saving and consumption reduction in building materials, preparing shape-stabilized phase-change materials using bio-porous carbon materials from renewable organic waste to building envelope materials is an effective strategy. In this work, pine cone porous biomass carbon (PCC) was prepared via a chemical activation method using renewable biomaterial pine cone as a precursor and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an activator. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and octadecane (OD) were loaded into PCC using the vacuum impregnation method to prepare polyethylene glycol/pine cone porous biomass carbon (PEG/PCC) and octadecane/pine cone porous biomass carbon (OD/PCC) shape-stabilized phase-change materials. PCCs with a high specific surface area and pore volume were obtained by adjusting the calcination temperature and amount of KOH, which was shown as a caterpillar-like and block morphology. The shape-stabilized PEG/PCC and OD/PCC composites showed high phase-change enthalpies of 144.3 J/g and 162.3 J/g, and the solar-thermal energy conversion efficiencies of the PEG/PCC and OD/PCC reached 79.9% and 84.8%, respectively. The effects of the contents of PEG/PCC and OD/PCC on the temperature-controlling capability of rigid polyurethane foam composites were further investigated. The results showed that the temperature-regulating and temperature-controlling capabilities of the energy-storing rigid polyurethane foam composites were gradually enhanced with an increase in the phase-change material content, and there was a significant thermostatic plateau in energy absorption at 25 °C and energy release at 10 °C, which decreased the energy consumption.
Sol-Gel Condensation of Temperature Sensitive and Shape Stabilized Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract:Shape-stable phase change materials (SSPCMs) with visible phase change progress are of great importance to thermal management. Herein, novel SSPCMs were facilely fabricated from 1,2,3-tris-(2,3-Epoxypropoxy) propane, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and poly(ethylene glycol) by sol-gel condensation. The resultant SSPCMs showed good shape stability at 70 degrees C, they were temperature sensitive at phase transition, where reversible transparent-opaque transfer for PEG content 45-65 %. Latent heats of the SSPCMs were almost proportional to the PEG content and the highest value reached 131.8 +/- 1.9 J/g at PEG content of 86 % (PE-86 %). The curing kinetics were analyzed by the Vyazovkin isoconversional method, the results indicated that the activation energy of PE-86 % was lower than that of pure PEG, suggesting that the supporting matrix had higher reactivity and could accelerate the reaction. Additionally, the SSPCMs also exhibited favorable thermal cycling reliability and thermal stability. The temperature sensitive and excellent thermal performance of the SSPCMs made them of great potential in thermal energy storage applications.
Synthesis of novel shape-stabilized phase change materials with high latent heat and low supercooling degree for thermal energy storage

Abstract:In this work, a novel shape-stabilized phase change material, composed of n -octadecane, expanded graphite (EG), and sodium chloride (NaCl), was prepared by a convenient method. In the composite, EG was used as the matrix material and NaCl served as the nucleating agent. Effects of the additional amount of NaCl on the thermal properties of the composite were investigated by DSC and TG. The melting and crystallization enthalpies of the composite are −160.23 J/g and 162.80 J/g, respectively; the supercooling degree of the composite decreased to 3.77 °C when compared to 7.58 °C of the pure n -octadecane. Furthermore, the thermal cycling performances became better, and the thermal decomposition temperature improved to 150 °C. The composite exhibited high latent heat, low supercooling degree, good thermal cycling performance, and enhanced thermal stability, making it a potential material for the thermal energy storage application in the field of thermal regulation.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) are a kind of highly efficient thermal storage materials which have a bright application prospect in many fields such as energy conservation in buildings, waste heat recovery, battery thermal management and so on. Especially inorganic hydrated salt PCMs have received increasing attention from researchers due to their advantages of being inexpensive and non-flammable. However, inorganic hydrated salt PCMs are still limited by the aspects of inappropriate phase change temperature, liquid phase leakage, large supercooling and severe phase separation in the application process. In this work, sodium acetate trihydrate was selected as the basic inorganic PCM, and a novel shape-stabilized composite phase change material (CPCM) with good thermal properties was prepared by adding various functional additives. At first, the sodium acetate trihydrate-acetamide binary mixture was prepared and the melting point was adjusted using acetamide. Then the binary mixture was incorporated into expanded graphite to synthesize a novel shape-stabilized CPCM. The thermophysical properties of the resultant shape-stabilized CPCM were systematically investigated. The microscopic morphology and chemical structure of the obtained shape-stabilized CPCM were characterized and analyzed. The experiment results pointed out that acetamide could effectively lower the melting point of sodium acetate trihydrate. The obtained shape-stabilized CPCM modified with additional 18% (mass fraction) acetamide and 12% (mass fraction) expanded graphite exhibited good shape stability and thermophysical characteristics: a low supercooling degree of 1.75°C and an appropriate melting temperature of 40.77°C were obtained; the latent heat of 151.64 kJ/kg and thermal conductivity of 1.411 W/(m·K) were also satisfactory. Moreover, after 50 accelerated melting-freezing cycles, the obtained shape-stabilized CPCM represented good thermal reliability.

Abstract:Shape-stabilized fatty acid eutectics/carboxy methyl cellulose-1 composites as phase change materials (PCMs) were synthesized by absorbing liquid eutectics into the carboxy methyl cellulose-1 fibers. The chemical structure, crystalloid phase and morphology were determined by the Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope, X-ray diffractometer and scanning electronic microscope. The thermal properties and thermal stability were measured by the differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analyzer and the thermal cycling test, respectively. The results indicate that the eutectics are well adsorbed in the porous structure of the carboxy methyl cellulose-1. According to the DSC (differential scanning calorimeter) results, the composites melt at 32.2 °C with latent heat of 114.6 kJ/kg and solidify at 29.2 °C with latent heat of 106.8 kJ/kg. The thermal cycling test proves that the composites have good thermal reliability. It is envisioned that the prepared shape-stabilized PCMs have considerable potential for developing their roles in thermal energy storage.
Shape-stabilized Composite Phase Change Materials with High Thermal Conductivity Based on Stearic Acid and Modified Expanded Vermiculite

Abstract:Stearic acid (SA) and modified expanded vermiculite (EV) shape-stabilized composite phase change materials (ss-CPCMs) with enhanced thermal conductivity were prepared. EV was impregnated with a starch solution, and then a composite of EV and carbon (EVC) was obtained by carbonizing starch in-situ in the EV layers. 63.12 wt % of SA was retained in the SA/EVC ss-CPCMs without leakage. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the EVC with highly porous micro-pores acted as a good support matrix for absorbing molten SA. The thermal conductivity of the SA/EVC ss-CPCMs was 0.52 W/ (m K), and this was an increase of 52.9% compared with that of the SA/EV ss-CPCMs. The results from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and thermal cycling tests indicated that the prepared SA/EVC ss-CPCMs are a promising material for energy efficient buildings because of their optimum phase-change temperature, a high enthalpy of phase change, ideal thermal conductivity, and good chemical and thermal stability.
