Abstract:We give a proof of BCFW recursion relations for all tree-level amplitudes of gravitons in General Relativity. The proof follows the same basic steps as in the BCFW construction and it is an extension of the one given for next-to-MHV amplitudes by one of the authors and P. Svrček in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0502160" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0502160">hep-th/0502160</a>. The main obstacle to overcome is to prove that deformed graviton amplitudes vanish as the complex variable parameterizing the deformation is taken to infinity. This step is done by first proving an auxiliary recursion relation where the vanishing at infinity follows directly from a Feynman diagram analysis. The auxiliary recursion relation gives rise to a representation of gravity amplitudes where the vanishing under the BCFW deformation can be directly proven. Since all our steps are based only on Feynman diagrams, our proof completely establishes the validity of BCFW recursion relations. This means that many results in the literature that were derived assuming their validity become true statements.

Gravity Amplitudes From Double Bonus Relations

Abstract:In this letter we derive new expressions for tree-level graviton amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity from BCFW recursion relations combined with new types of bonus relations. These bonus relations go beyond the famous $1/z^2$ behavior under a large BCFW shift, and use knowledge about certain zeroes of graviton amplitudes in collinear kinematics. This extra knowledge can be used in the context of global residue theorems by writing the amplitude in a special form using canonical building blocks. In the NMHV case these building blocks are dressed one-loop leading singularities, the same objects that appear in the expansion of Yang-Mills amplitudes, where each term corresponds to an $R$-invariant. Unlike other approaches, our formula is not an expansion in terms of cyclic objects and does not manifest color-kinematics duality, but rather preserves the permutational symmetry of its building blocks. We also comment on the possible connection to Grassmannian geometry and give some non-trivial evidence of such structure for graviton amplitudes.

Scattering of Massless Particles: Scalars, Gluons and Gravitons

Abstract:In a recent note we presented a compact formula for the complete tree-level S-matrix of pure Yang-Mills and gravity theories in arbitrary spacetime dimension. In this paper we show that a natural formulation also exists for a massless colored cubic scalar theory. In Yang-Mills, the formula is an integral over the space of n marked points on a sphere and has as integrand two factors. The first factor is a combination of Parke-Taylor-like terms dressed with U(N ) color structures while the second is a Pfaffian. The S-matrix of a U(N ) × U(Ñ ) cubic scalar theory is obtained by simply replacing the Pfaffian with a U(Ñ ) version of the previous U(N ) factor. Given that gravity amplitudes are obtained by replacing the U(N ) factor in Yang-Mills by a second Pfaffian, we are led to a natural color-kinematics correspondence. An expansion of the integrand of the scalar theory leads to sums over trivalent graphs and are directly related to the KLT matrix. Combining this and the Yang-Mills formula we find a connection to the BCJ color-kinematics duality as well as a new proof of the BCJ doubling property that gives rise to gravity amplitudes. We end by considering a special kinematic point where the partial amplitude simply counts the number of color-ordered planar trivalent trees, which equals a Catalan number. The scattering equations simplify dramatically and are equivalent to a special Y-system with solutions related to roots of Chebyshev polynomials. The sum of the integrand over the solutions gives rise to a representation of Catalan numbers in terms of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of an A-type Dynkin diagram.

Abstract:In this paper, we study from various perspectives the expansion of tree level single trace Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes into linear combination of color-ordered Yang Mills amplitudes. By applying the gauge invariance principle, a programable recursive construction is devised to expand EYM amplitude with arbitrary number of gravitons into EYM amplitudes with fewer gravitons. Based on this recursive technique we write down the complete expansion of any single trace EYM amplitude in the basis of color-order Yang-Mills amplitude. As a byproduct, an algorithm for constructing a polynomial form of the BCJ numerator for Yang-Mills amplitudes is also outlined in this paper. In addition, by applying BCFW recursion relation we show how to arrive at the same EYM amplitude expansion from the on-shell perspective. And we examine the EYM expansion using KLT relations and show how to evaluate the expansion coefficients efficiently.
Virtual color-kinematics duality: 6-pt 1-loop MHV amplitudes

Abstract:We study 1-loop MHV amplitudes in 𝒩 = 4 super Yang-Mills theory and in 𝒩 = 8 supergravity. For Yang-Mills we find that the simple form for the full amplitude presented by Del Duca, Dixon and Maltoni naturally leads to one that has physical residues on all compact contours. After expanding the simple form in terms of standard scalar integrals, we introduce redundancies under certain symmetry considerations to impose the color-kinematics duality of Bern, Carrasco and Johansson (BCJ). For five particles we directly find the results of Carrasco and Johansson as well as a new compact form for the supergravity amplitude. For six particles we find that all kinematic dual Jacobi identities are encapsulated in a single functional equation relating the expansion coefficients. By the BCJ double-copy construction we obtain a formula for the corresponding 𝒩 = 8 super-gravity amplitude. Quite surprisingly, all physical information becomes independent of the expansion coefficients modulo the functional equation. In other words, there is no need to solve the functional equation at all. This is quite welcome as the functional equation we find, using our restricted set of redundancies, actually has no solutions. For this reason we call these results virtual color-kinematics duality. We end with speculations about the meaning of an interesting global vs. local feature of the functional equation and the situation at higher points.

Abstract:The tree-level S-matrix of Einstein’s theory is known to have a representation as an integral over the moduli space of punctured spheres localized to the solutions of the scattering equations. In this paper we introduce three operations that can be applied on the integrand in order to produce other theories. Starting in d + M dimensions we use dimensional reduction to construct Einstein-Maxwell with gauge group U(1) M . The second operation turns gravitons into gluons and we call it “squeezing”. This gives rise to a formula for all multi-trace mixed amplitudes in Einstein-Yang-Mills. Dimensionally reducing Yang-Mills we find the S-matrix of a special Yang-Mills-Scalar (YMS) theory, and by the squeezing operation we find that of a YMS theory with an additional cubic scalar vertex. A corollary of the YMS formula gives one for a single massless scalar with a ϕ4 interaction. Starting again from Einstein’s theory but in d + d dimensions we introduce a “generalized dimensional reduction” that produces the Born-Infeld theory or a special Galileon theory in d dimensions depending on how it is applied. An extension of Born-Infeld formula leads to one for the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theory. By applying the same operation to Yang-Mills we obtain the U(N ) non-linear sigma model (NLSM). Finally, we show how the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations naturally follow from our formulation and provide additional connections among these theories. One such relation constructs DBI from YMS and NLSM.

Abstract:We give a proof that the pure spinor superstring theory in a novel infinite tension limit, as was discussed recently by Berkovits, reproduces the tree-level scattering amplitudes of the ten-dimensional $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 super Yang-Mills in its heterotic version and type II supergravity in its type II version. The Yang-Mills case agrees with the result obtained by Mafra, Schlotterer, Stieberger and Tsimpis.

Abstract:bstract We present the building blocks that can be combined to produce tree-level S-matrix elements of a variety of theories with various spins mixed in arbitrary dimensions. The new formulas for the scattering of n massless particles are given by integrals over the positions of n points on a sphere restricted to satisfy the scattering equations. As applications, we obtain all single-trace amplitudes in Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory, and generalizations to include scalars. Also in EYM but extended by a B-field and a dilaton, we present all double-trace gluon amplitudes. The building blocks are made of Pfaffians and Parke-Taylor-like factors of subsets of particle labels.

Abstract:We study the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations for quantum field theory by reformulating it as an isomorphism between two Lie algebras. We also show how explicit formulas for KLT relations arise when studying rational functions on ${\mathcal M}_{0,n}$, and prove identities that allow for arbitrary rational functions to be expanded in any given basis. Via the Cachazo-He-Yuan formulas for, these identities also lead to new formulas for gauge and gravity tree amplitudes, including formulas for so-called Bern-Carrasco-Johansson numerators, in the case of non-linear sigma model and maximal-helicity-violating Yang-Mills amplitudes.

Abstract:We present a compact formula for the complete tree-level S-matrix of pure Yang-Mills and gravity theories in arbitrary spacetime dimensions. The new formula for the scattering of n particles is given by an integral over the positions of n points on a sphere restricted to satisfy a dimension-independent set of equations. The integrand is constructed using the reduced Pfaffian of a 2n×2n matrix, Ψ, that depends on momenta and polarization vectors. In its simplest form, the gravity integrand is a reduced determinant which is the square of the Pfaffian in the Yang-Mills integrand. Gauge invariance is completely manifest as it follows from a simple property of the Pfaffian.

Abstract:KLT relations on $S_2$ factorize closed string amplitudes into product of open string tree amplitudes. The field theory limits of KLT factorization relations hold in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity. In this paper, we consider the field theory limits of relations on $D_2$. Though the relations on $D_2$ and KLT factorization relations hold on worldsheets with different topologies, we find the field theory limits of $D_2$ relations also hold in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity. We use the $D_2$ relations to give three- and four-point tree amplitudes where gluons are minimally coupled to gravitons. We also give a discussion on general tree amplitudes for minimal coupling of gauge field and gravity. In general, any tree amplitude with $M$ gravitons in addition to $N$ gluons can be given by pure-gluon tree amplitudes with $N+2M$ legs.
Recursive construction for expansions of tree Yang-Mills amplitudes from soft theorem

Abstract:In this paper, we have introduced a fundamentally different approach, based on a bottom-up methodology, to expand tree-level Yang-Mills (YM) amplitudes into Yang-Mills-scalar (YMS) amplitudes and Bi-adjoint-scalar (BAS) amplitudes. Our method relies solely on the intrinsic soft behavior of external gluons, eliminating the need for external aids such as Feynman rules or CHY rules. The recursive procedure consistently preserves explicit gauge invariance at every step, ultimately resulting in a manifest gauge-invariant outcome when the initial expression is already framed in a gauge-invariant manner. The resulting expansion can be directly analogized to the expansions of gravitational (GR) amplitudes using the double copy structure. When combined with the expansions of Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes obtained using the covariant double copy method from existing literature, the expansions presented in this note yield gauge-invariant BCJ numerators.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the expansion of tree level multitrace Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) amplitudes. First, we propose two types of recursive expansions of tree level EYM amplitudes with an arbitrary number of gluons, gravitons and traces by those amplitudes with fewer traces or/and gravitons. Then we give many support evidence, including proofs using the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula and Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) recursive relation. As a byproduct, two types of generalized BCJ relations for multitrace EYM are further proposed, which will be useful in the BCFW proof. After one applies the recursive expansions repeatedly, any multitrace EYM amplitudes can be given in the Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) basis of tree level color ordered Yang-Mills (YM) amplitudes. Thus the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) numerators, as the expansion coefficients, for all multitrace EYM amplitudes are naturally constructed.

Abstract:bstract Using the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formalism, we prove a recursive expansion of tree level single trace Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) amplitudes with an arbitrary number of gluons and gravitons, which is valid for general spacetime dimensions and any helicity configurations. The recursion is written in terms of fewer-graviton EYM amplitudes and pure Yang-Mills (YM) amplitudes, which can be further carried out until we reach an expansion in terms of pure YM amplitudes in Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) basis. Our expansion then generates naturally a spanning tree structure rooted on gluons whose vertices are gravitons. We further propose a set of graph theoretical rules based on spanning trees that evaluate directly the pure YM expansion coefficients.
Amplitude relations in heterotic string theory and Einstein-Yang-Mills

Abstract:We present all-multiplicity evidence that the tree-level S-matrix of gluons and gravitons in heterotic string theory can be reduced to color-ordered single-trace amplitudes of the gauge multiplet. Explicit amplitude relations are derived for up to three gravitons, up to two color traces and an arbitrary number of gluons in each case. The results are valid to all orders in the inverse string tension $\alpha'$ and generalize to the ten-dimensional superamplitudes which preserve 16 supercharges. Their field-theory limit results in an alternative proof of the recently discovered relations between Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes and those of pure Yang-Mills theory. Similarities and differences between the integrands of the Cachazo-He-Yuan formulae and the heterotic string are investigated.

Computing NMHV Gravity Amplitudes at Infinity

Abstract:In this note we show how the solutions to the scattering equations in the NMHV sector fully decompose into subsectors in the $z\to \infty$ limit of a Risager deformation. Each subsector is characterized by the punctures that coalesce in the limit. This naturally decomposes the $E(n-3,1)$ solutions into sets characterized by partitions of $n-3$ elements so that exactly one subset has more than one element. We present analytic expressions for the leading order of the solutions in an expansion around infinite $z$ for any $n$. We also give a simple algorithm for numerically computing arbitrarily high orders in the same expansion. As a consequence, one has the ability to compute Yang-Mills and gravity amplitudes purely from this expansion around infinity. Moreover, we present a new analytic computation of the residue at infinity of the $n=12$ NMHV tree-level gravity amplitude which agrees with the results of Conde and Rajabi. In fact, we present the analytic form of the leading order in $1/z$ of the Cachazo-Skinner-Mason/CHY formula for graviton amplitudes for each subsector and to all multiplicity. As a byproduct of the all-order algorithm, one has access to the numerical value of the residue at infinity for any $n$ and hence to the corrected CSW (or MHV) expansion for NMHV gravity amplitudes.

Abstract:In this paper, we study non-adjacent BCFW recursion relations and their connection to positive geometry. For an adjacent BCFW shift, the n -point N k MHV tree-level amplitude in = 4 SYM theory is expressed as a sum over planar on-shell diagrams, corresponding to canonical "dlog" forms on the cells in the positive Grassmannian G + ( k , n ). Non-adjacent BCFW shifts naturally lead to an expansion of the amplitude in terms of a different set of objects, which do not manifest the cyclic ordering and the hidden Yangian symmetry of the amplitude. We show that these terms can be interpreted as dlog forms on the non-planar Grassmannian geometries , generalizing the cells of the positive Grassmannian G + ( k , n ) to a larger class of objects which live in G ( k , n ). We focus mainly on the case of NMHV amplitudes and discuss in detail the Grassmannian geometries. We also propose an alternative way to calculate the associated on-shell functions and dlog forms using an intriguing connection between Grassmannian configurations and the geometry in the kinematical space.

Scattering in three dimensions from rational maps

Abstract:The complete tree-level S-matrix of four dimensional 𝒩=4 super Yang-Mills and 𝒩=8 supergravity has compact forms as integrals over the moduli space of certain rational maps. In this note we derive formulas for amplitudes in three dimensions by using the fact that when amplitudes are dressed with proper wave functions dimensional reduction becomes straightforward. This procedure leads to formulas in terms of rational maps for three dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills and gravity theories. The integrand of the new formulas contains three basic structures: Parke-Taylor-like factors, Vandermonde determinants and resultants. Integrating out some of the Grassmann directions produces formulas for theories with less than maximal supersymmetry, which exposes yet a fourth kind of structure. Combining all four basic structures we start a search for consistent S-matrices in three dimensions. Very nicely, the most natural ones are those corresponding to ABJM and BLG theories. We also make a connection between the power of a resultant in the integrand, representations of the Poincaré group, infrared behavior and conformality of a theory. Extensions to other theories in three dimensions and to arbitrary dimensions are also discussed.
