Abstract:This paper aims to report a method of synthesizing alloyed platinum-nickel nanoclusters on activated carbon to enhance its hydrogenation performance of tetralin without adding solvents. The activated carbon provides a high surface area, while the highly-dispersed platinum acts as the hydrogen adsorption and dissociation site, in addition the Ni can alloy with Pt to induce more electron deficiency. Due to such favorable conditions, the bimetallic Pt–Ni/AC catalysts show good conversion and selectivity for hydrogenation of tetralin within a very short time. Furthermore, after six consecutive cycles, no prominent fluctuations in activity and selectivity are observed. Thus, the supported platinum–nickel nanocatalysts with excellent efficiency and prolonged lifetime for tetralin hydrogenation harbors great significance for future nanocatalyst design.

Abstract:Noncrystalline bi-component alloy nanotubes, e.g. Ni–B nanotubes, have manifested their superior catalytic performance for some hydrogenation reactions. Their related potential applications, however, are limited due to their instability. Herein, tri-component noncrystalline Ni–Cu–B alloy nanotubes were prepared through liquid crystals as templates. In the liquid-phase hydrogenation of p-chlorinitrobenzene, the as-prepared noncrystalline Ni–Cu–B alloy nanotubes exhibited higher catalytic activity and better stability than Ni–B alloy nanotubes, due to the electronic interaction between the nickel and copper.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzene (HNB) has been a great important chemical reaction in the fine chemical productions. In this study, the effect of metal particle size on the selective hydrogenation of HNB over Pd/C catalysts has been extensively investigated through the combination of theoretical (density functional theory calculations, DFT) and experimental methods. DFT calculations showed that the reaction barriers for dechlorination strongly depend on the type of reaction sites (terrace or edge), while the hydrogenation reaction barriers are nearly the same on different sites, which indicates that Pd nanoparticle size significantly affects the catalyst selectivity. Moreover, Pd nanoparticles with different sizes (from 2.1 to 30 nm) supported on activated carbon were synthesized using the methods developed by our group. In a 500 mL reactor, the selectivity is over 99.90% when the Pd nanoparticles are bigger than 25 nm. Finally, the industrial applications of the proposed catalyst were evaluated in several pilot factories. This study provides useful information on controlling the selectivity of other similar reactions catalyzed by noble-metal nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Supported Pd-based catalyst over active nickel oxide (NiO) was repared using the impregnation method companying with UV-light irradiation. Moreover, the catalytic performance of the obtained Pd-based catalysts was evaluated towards the hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzene (o-CNB). Observations indicate that the as-prepared UV-irradiated Pd/NiO catalyst with a mole fraction 0.2% (0.2%Pd/NiO) has higher activity and selectivity in the o-CNB hydrogenation. Especially, UV-light irradiation played a positive role in the improvement of catalytic activity of 0.2%Pd/NiO catalyst, exhibiting an excess 11-fold activity superiority in contrast with non-UV-irradiated 0.2%Pd/NiO catalyst. In addition, it was investigated that effects of varied factors (i.e., reaction time, temperature, o-CNB/Pd ratio, Pd loading, hydrogen pressure) on the selective hydrogenation of ο-CNB catalyzed by UV-irradiated 0.2%Pd/NiO catalyst. Under the reaction conditions of 60 °C, 0.5 h, 1 MPa H2 pressure, 100% conversion of o-CNB, and 81.1% o-CAN selectivity were obtained, even at high molar ratio (8000:1) of o-CNB to Pd.

Abstract:A noncrystalline Ni-B alloy in the shape of nanotubes has demonstrated its superior catalytic performance for some hydrogenation reactions. Remarkable synergistic effects have been observed in many reactions when bimetallic catalysts were used; however, bimetallic noncrystalline alloy nanotubes are far less investigated. Here, we report a simple acetone-assisted lamellar liquid crystal approach for synthesizing a series of bimetallic Ni-Co-B nanotubes and investigate their catalytic performances. The dilution effect of acetone on liquid crystals was characterized by small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Ni/Co molar ratio of the catalyst was varied to study the composition, porous structure, electronic interaction, and catalytic efficiency. In the liquid-phase hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene, the as-prepared noncrystalline alloy Ni-Co-B nanotubes exhibited higher catalytic activity and increased stability as compared to Ni-B and Co-B alloy nanotubes due to electronic interactions between the nickel and cobalt. The excellent hydrogenation performance of the Ni-Co-B nanotubes was attributed to their high specific surface area and the characteristic confinement effects, compared with Ni-Co-B nanoparticles.

Abstract:A nanocomposite composed of Ni modified carbon nitride was synthesized and used in the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene. H/D exchange demonstrated that the hydrogen chemisorbed on the surface of this nanocomposite catalyst had a hydrogen atom density of 0.65/nm2. It was active for hydrogenation but its activity was inferior to the hydrogen adsorbed on a Ni/Al2O3 catalyst. Catalytic tests showed that this catalyst possessed a lower activity than Ni/Al2O3 but the selectivity towards p-chloroaniline was above 99.9%. Even at high conversion, the catalyst maintained high selectivity, which was attributed to the unique surface property of the catalyst and the absence of a site for the adsorption of p-chloronitrobenzene, which prevents the C–Cl bond from breaking.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of carbon nanotubes-supported nickel catalyst for the hydrogenation of Chlorophyll at normal temperature and pressure was studied. The catalyst was characterized by TEM and FT-IR. The results showed that pre-oxidation of carbon nanotubes by boiling nitric acid could create functional groups, such as - OH and - COOH, and enhanced the dispersion of Ni, thus leading to a rise in catalytic activity. Activity test also showed that the catalyst with 7% Ni loading is the most effective in the hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Ultra-dispersed Ni nanoparticles (7.5 nm) on nitrogen-doped carbon nanoneedles (Ni@NCNs) were prepared by simple pyrolysis of Ni-based metal–organic-framework for selective hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzenes to corresponding anilines. Two different crystallization methods (stirring and static) were compared and the optimal pyrolysis temperature was explored. Ni@NCNs were systematically characterized by wide analytical techniques. In the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene, Ni@NCNs-600 (pyrolyzed at 600 °C) exhibited extraordinarily high performance with 77.9 h–1 catalytic productivity and > 99% p-chloroaniline selectivity at full p-chloronitrobenzene conversion under mild conditions (90 °C, 1.5 MPa H2), showing obvious superiority compared with reported Ni-based catalysts. Notably, the reaction smoothly proceeded at room temperature with full conversion and > 99% selectivity. Moreover, Ni@NCNs-600 afforded good tolerance to various nitroarenes substituted by sensitive groups (halogen, nitrile, keto, carboxylic, etc.), and could be easily recycled by magnetic separation and reused for 5 times without deactivation. The adsorption tests showed that the preferential adsorption of –NO2 on the catalyst can restrain the dehalogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene, thus achieving high p-chloroaniline selectivity. While the high activity can be attributed to high Ni dispersion, special morphology, and rich pore structure of the catalyst.

Abstract:As haloanilines (HANs) are important organic intermediates and fine chemicals, their preparation over non-noble-metal-based catalysts by catalytic hydrogenation has attracted wide attention. However, the reaction suffers from relatively harsh conditions. Herein, we found that a 3.5%Ni/P25 catalyst exhibited superior photo-thermal catalytic activity with a TOFs of 5207 h-1 for hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB) to p-chloroaniline under a 300 W full spectrum, which was much higher than that of photo- and thermal catalysis alone. Moreover, the 3.5%Ni/P25 catalyst could be recycled 4 times and was effective for the hydrogenation of various halonitrobenzenes (HNBs) with superior selectivity. Furthermore, the kinetic research showed that the excellent catalytic performance could be attributed to the better activation and dissociation of H2 by photo-thermal catalysis and the hydrogenation of p-CNB obeyed the condensation routine by ionic hydrogenation over 3.5%Ni/P25.

Abstract:Binary noncrystalline alloy nanotubes M-B (M=Fe,Co,and Ni) were prepared using NaBH4 as the reducing agent for the reduction of transition metal ions located in the layer structure of lytropic liquid crystals of mixed nonionic-anionic surfactants.By adding P-,Co-,or Cu-containing compound during the preparation of Ni alloy samples,ternary noncrystalline alloy nanotube,i.e.,NiPB,NiCuB,or NiCoB,can be obtained.It has been argued that the presence of the lytropic liquid crystals is the key for the formation of noncrystalline nanotubes.The reduction of transition metal ions located in the layer structure of the liquid crystal accompanied by the formation of H2 results in the cleavage and curl of the layer structure leading to the formation of nanotubes.The catalytic properties of some hydrogenation reactions have shown that the noncrystalline nanotubes are superior to the corresponding noncrystalline nanoparticles.Due to the well known unique properties of the noncrystalline materials,it is expected that the noncrystalline nanotubes,as a new type of nanotubes,might possess exciting prospects for their future application.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous Ni nanowires were synthesized by Ni electroless plating on the amine-functionalized SBA-15 (NH2−SBA-15) support, followed by removing the silica template with NaOH. The incorporation of amine groups into the pore channels and the subsequent activation of NH2−SBA-15 with PdCl2 acetone solution are essential for generating Pd crystal seeds distributed in the pore channels. As a result, the following Ni electroless plating occurred mainly in pore channels, leading to the formation of ordered Ni nanowires catalyst with high surface area, ordered mesopore arrangement, and higher activity than Raney Ni in liquid-phase p-chloronitrobenzene hydrogenation.

Abstract:Granulated Pt/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were found to have a much better catalytic activity in the liquid phase hydrogenation of nitrobenzene than Pt/activated carbon (AC). The granulated CNTs had much larger pores than the AC particles, which gave a faster mass transfer rate of H-2 that helped produce aniline with high selectivity.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of hydrocarbon resins to high value-added products represents a prospective technology to upgrade the pyrolysis gasoline byproduct, while pore diffusion is challenging. Herein, Ni nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Ni/NCNTs) were designed and synthesized via an impregnation method. The as-prepared Ni/NCNTs exhibit superior hydrogenation of large molecular C5 hydrocarbon resins (C5HR) catalytic activity under mild conditions relative to that reported by literature, and the degree of hydrogenation (DH) for C5HR with a water-white appearance reach up to 95.5%. Combined with the BET, TEM, XPS, H2-TPR analysis results, the catalytic performance of Ni/NCNTs catalyst could ascribe to that the unique structure of NCNTs carrier provides a more accessible surface area that accounts for 88.1% of the specific surface area to expose abundant active sites, and small nickel nanoparticle sizes (less than 10 nm). Additionally, Ni/NCNTs exhibit higher stability for C5HR hydrogenation than Ni/CNTs catalyst, which attributes to the efficient anchor ability of N defect and the formation of Ni–N units.

Abstract:Fabrication of low-loading, noble-metal, stable, and high-performance metal catalysts remains a thorny issue. Herein, we demonstrate the successful formation of a hybrid nanostructure Pt/TiO2/SBA-15 catalyst (denoted as HNSC-P/T/S; Pt, 0.09%; TiO2, 10%) with satisfactory activity in the hydrogenation of para-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB). The HNSC-P/T/S showed >99% conversion and a high selectivity of >98%, and the turnover frequency number (TOF) reached 66 766 h-1, which was impossible to achieve with Pt/TiO2 (denoted as P/T) or Pt/SBA-15 (denoted as P/S). The success of the catalytic activity of the HNSC-P/T/S mainly relies on its synergistic effect and special structure, which can fully develop the catalytic ability of Pt, thereby reducing the Pt loading in the noble-based catalyst. Furthermore, the HNSC-P/T/S could also achieve an excellent catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of other nitroarenes. Hence, this work proposes a direction to prepare a noble-based catalyst with a low loading of noble metals for diverse applications.

Abstract:A series of NiCoB catalysts with various modifiers (Mo, La, Fe and W) were prepared by chemical reduction method using NaBH4 as the reducing agent at 303K. The catalysts were characterized with nitrogen sorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The catalytic properties of these catalysts for p-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB) hydrogenation were studied. All of the modified catalysts possessed amorphous structure. The modifiers acted as the spacer to prevent the NiCoB particles from aggregation, so the particle sizes of the modified catalysts were less than that of the unmodified NiCoB catalyst. XPS results showed that the modifiers existed both in elemental and oxidized states. Different modifiers had various effects on the surface composition of NiCoB catalyst. The elemental state of the modifier formed nano-alloy with Ni and Co and affected their electron densities. The oxidized state of each modifier had its unique Lewis acidity which influenced the products distributions (the relative contents of p-chloronitroaniline, aniline and nitrobenzene) in the p-CNB hydrogenation. These effects were responsible for the different behaviors of Mo-, La-, Fe- and W-modified NiCoB catalysts in the p-CNB hydrogenation.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT)-supported Pt catalysts have been prepared by impregnation and reduction–precipitation method using chloroplatinic acid as metal precursor. The structure of the catalysts has been characterised using TEM, BET and XPS. The catalytic performance for nitrobenzene hydrogenation was evaluated under atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. The results show that the catalysts, both of low and higher Pt loading, show high activity for nitrobenzene directly hydrogenating to aniline under mild conditions. The highly dispersed Pt and mesoporosity structure of acid-oxidized CNT-supported Pt catalyst are responsible for the extraordinary activity.

Abstract:Palladium is a key catalyst invaluable to many industrial processes and fine-chemical synthesis. Although recent progress has allowed the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles with various shapes by using different techniques, the facile synthesis of Pd nanocrystals and turning them into a highly active, selective, and stable catalyst systems still remain challenging. Herein, we report the highly selective one-pot synthesis of monodisperse Pd cluster nanowires in aqueous solution; these consist of interconnected nanoparticles and may serve as highly active catalysts because of the enrichment of high index facets on the surface, including {443}, {331}, and {221} steps. For the first time, carbon nanotube and ?-Al2O3 immobilized Pd cluster nanowires showed highly enhanced catalytic performance in the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde and gas-phase hydrogenation of 1,3butadiene relative to immobilized Pd icosahedra and nanocubes, as well as commercial Pd catalysts.
