Abstract:It has been over a quarter of a century since the repetition blindness (RB) effect was first reported by Kanwisher (1987) and the precise mechanism underlying RB has been extensively debated. Researchers proposed different theories to account for the effect, for example, it has been argued that RP occurs due to a failure at the visual perception level; alternatively, it has also been argued that RP involves failure to memorize the repeated stimulus. Meanwhile, RB is influenced by many factors, such as presentation durations, lags, experimental materials, spatial locations and tasks. The popularization of neuroscience technology such as ERP and fMRI in recent years allows researchers to reveal the brain activity of RB. As a kind of experimental method, researchers have applied RB effect to explore some phenomena of the visual perception. The current paper reviews these basic research topics. However, many aspects of repetition blindness are still worth of further exploration.

Abstract:Repetition blindness (RB) is the failure to report the second occurrence of a repeated word, when words are sequentially and briefly displayed (Kanwisher, 1987). RB is also observed for non-identical words, such as home, dome. Explanations for non-identity RB assume that similarity at the level of the whole word causes the second word to be suppressed (“similarity inhibition”). Three experiments demonstrate that RB is robust for diverse types of orthographic relatedness, including critical words that share only their first initial letter, their last two letters, first three letters, middle three letters, beginning and final letters, three alternating letters, and three non-aligned letters (as in chance hand). The theoretical construct of similarity inhibition may be able to account for these data, although one mechanism previously proposed in the literature, neighbourhood inhibition, is probably not a useful way to explain the data on RB for words sharing only one or two letters. We introduce an alternative explanation for orthographic RB: Only the repeated letters are suppressed, and amount of RB depends on how easily the perceiver can reconstruct the target word from the non-suppressed letters.
A Study on Repetition Blindness in Processing Chinese Sentences

Abstract:The present study examined the repetition blindness(RB) effect in processing Chinese sentences in which syntax and meaning were unscathed,scathed,and with homonyms.The results showed:(1) RB occurred not only in unscathed sentences,but also in scathed ones.It was more difficult for the subjects detect or reported repeated words in unscathed sentences than the scathed sentences because of more intruding propensity to R2(the second repeated characters) in the scathed sentences;(2) RB was found in sentences with homonyms.It was not the main cause for RB.All of the results indicated that RB probably appeared in the perceptive stage before semantic processing because it was not influenced by the context.
Examining radical position and function in Chinese character recognition using the repetition blindness paradigm

Abstract:Repetition blindness (RB) is the failure to report the second occurrence of repeated items in a rapid serial visual presentation stream. The two-stage model of RB by Bavelier (1994) states that more properties shared between the repeated items lead to a larger RB effect. We used RB paradigm to examine the position (left or right) and the function (semantic or phonetic) of radicals in Chinese character recognition. Compared to the repeated radicals with the same position and function, RB was reduced when they were in different positions (Experiment 1A), but not when they had different functions (Experiment 1B). Similar RB-effect was observed when only one, or both, of the repeated radicals provided valid semantic or phonetic cues to characters (Experiments 2A and 2B). These results suggest that radicals are encoded with position but not function information. The radical function is likely implemented in lateral connections between semantic and phonological representations of characters.

Abstract:In the present study,event-related brain potentials were used to investigate the repetition blindness effect in processing Chinese characters,when stimuli were displayed in rapid serial visual presentation.The results showed that when the repetition items were displayed at either end of the list,the participants performed better than when they were displayed in the middle of the list,thus producing a sequence position effect;and that the subjects were less accurate in the intervening than preceding word condition.These results suggest that the intensity of repetition blindness may,to some extent,be affected by the attention cost occupied by the repetition items,and repetition blindness effect may be co-influenced by perception and memory.
Repetition priming and repetition blindness: Effects of an intervening distractor word.

Abstract:In a simplified repetition blindness (RB) paradigm, university students named target words (C2) that were presented for 72 ms and followed by a pattern mask. A prime word (C1) that was identical or unrelated to the target was read silently at the beginning of each trial, and there was an intervening distractor item displayed for 120 ms between prime and target. When the distractor was a word, there was a large repetition cost for target accuracy at both prime durations (Experiments 1A and 1B). The cost with word distractors was not abolished when instructions about repeats were given (Experiments 2A and 2B). When the distractor was selected from a set of random-letter strings, there was a repetition benefit in target accuracy for a 120-ms prime and no effect for a 480-ms prime (Experiments 3A and 3B). The Effect of Encoding Effectiveness from the Stimulus on Repetition Blindness

Abstract:Repeating an item in a brief or rapid display usually produces faster or more accurate identifying of the item. However, sometimes the repetition produces the opposite effect that the second occurrence (R2) of a target (R1) in RSVP paradigm often fails to be reported. This phenomenon is called repetition blindness (Kanwisher, 1987). Existing theories of repetition blindness can be classified as activation/inhibition view which holds that the ability to report an item’s occurrence in short time depends on activation of an abstract representation of the item, and construction/attribution view which hold that the variability of repetition blindness when different aspects of the processing episode are changed (Morris, Still, &Caldwell-Harris, 2009). But neither view is able to explain the evidence from studies supporting the other view. Morris et al. (2009) supposed the Competition Hypothesis and challenged those views. According to the hypothesis, inter-item competition in RSVP is the key to initiate repetition blindness. However, the Competition Hypothesis did not explore the effect of encoding effectiveness from the different stimuli in RSVP on the inter-item competition. The present study conducted three experiments with the RSVP paradigm to investigate the occurrence mechanism of repetition blindness. We manipulated the property of target stimuli (English letters or computer symbols) in Experiment 1a and the position of target stimuli (Position 1 and 3 or Position 2 and 4) in Experiment 1b to explore whether the encoding effectiveness of stimuli influenced the processing of repeated items. In Experiment 2, the property of target stimuli (Chinese characters or computer symbols) was manipulated to verify the reliability of the result of Experiment 1 and the rationality of the Competition Hypothesis. Experiment 3 investigated the effect of the encoding effectiveness of non-target stimuli on repetition blindness by manipulating the word frequency of non-target stimuli (high frequency or low frequency). The accuracy rates for reporting R2 were compared using a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance for each experiment. Results of Experiment 1a showed less repetition blindness on the condition that the target items were symbols. Experiment 1b found that repetition blindness occurred on the condition that the target items were on Position1and Position 3, not on the condition that the target items were on Position2 and Position 4. In Experiment 2, when the non-target stimuli were high frequent Chinese characters, and the target stimuli were high frequent Chinese characters and computer symbols, repetition blindness of the former was larger than that of the latter. In Experiment 3, when the target stimuli were high frequent Chinese characters, repetition blindness occurred on the condition that the non-target items were high frequent Chinese characters, and there was no repetition blindness on the condition that the non-target items were low frequent Chinese characters. Therefore, the results in the three experiments supported the Competition Hypothesis. Further, the present study indicated that either in English letters or in Chinese characters, the encoding effectiveness from the target and non-target stimuli affected the repetition blindness.
Neural Mechanisms of Repetition Blindness in Processing Chinese:Evidence from an ERP Study

Abstract:In the present study,Event-related brain potentials(ERP) were used to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying in processing Chinese,when stimuli were displayed in rapid serial visual presentation.The results showed a greater negativity in Repetition Blindness as compared to the Repeated Correct between 200 and 300 ms after onset of the second repeated Chinese character R2;besides,Unrepeated correct elicited a more positive ERP deflection(P700) than Repetition Blindness during the time window 600-800 ms,thus suggesting that repetition blindness results in inhibition of working memory which is induced by early erroneous perceptual process on repetition Chinese character.
Repetition blindness is immune to the central bottleneck.

Abstract:The attentional blink (AB) and repetition blindness (RB) phenomena refer to subjects' impaired ability to detect the second of two different (AB) or identical (RB) target stimuli in a rapid serial visual presentation stream if they appear within 500 msec of one another. Despite the fact that the AB reveals a failure of conscious visual perception, it is at least partly due to limitations at central stages of information processing. Do all attentional limits to conscious perception have their locus at this central bottleneck? To address this question, here we investigated whether RB is affected by online response selection, a cognitive operation that requires central processing. The results indicate that, unlike the AB, RB does not result from central resource limitations. Evidently, temporal attentional limits to conscious perception can occur at multiple stages of information processing.

Repetition Blindness for Faces: A Comparison of Face Identity, Expression, and Gender Judgments

Abstract:Repetition blindness (RB) refers to the impairment in reporting two identical targets within a rapid serial visual presentation stream. While numerous studies have demonstrated RB for words and picture of objects, very few studies have examined RB for faces. This study extended this research by examining RB when the two faces were complete repeats (same emotion and identity), identity repeats (same individual, different emotion), and emotion repeats (different individual, same emotion) for identity, gender, and expression judgment tasks. Complete RB and identity RB effects were evident for all three judgment tasks. Emotion RB was only evident for the expression and gender judgments. Complete RB effects were larger than emotion or identity RB effects across all judgment tasks. For the expression judgments, there was more emotion than identity RB. The identity RB effect was larger than the emotion RB effect for the gender judgments. Cross task comparisons revealed larger complete RB effects for the expression and gender judgments than the identity decisions. There was a larger emotion RB effect for the expression than gender judgments and the identity RB effect was larger for the gender than for the identity and expression judgments. These results indicate that while faces are subject to RB, this is affected by the type of repeated information and relevance of the facial characteristic to the judgment decision. This study provides further support for the operation of separate processing mechanisms for face gender, emotion, and identity information within models of face recognition.

Abstract:Attending to the first target in rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) interferes with processing of the second target so that the participants fail to recognize the second target if the targets are separated by a stimulus onset asynchrony of 200-500 ms. This phenomenon is attentional blink (AB). Repetition blindness (RB) is an additional difficulty to recognize the second occurrence of the same stimulus in RSVP. A controversial issue in studies of both deficits is the processing level at which they occur. To compare the timing and mechanisms of AB and RB directly during the same RSVP stream, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to repeated and unrepeated targets. Comparable to earlier ERP studies on visual awareness, the results showed for both types of targets a negative amplitude difference between ERPs to consciously recognized and unrecognized targets during 250-350 ms from stimulus onset, suggesting that both AB and RB are associated with deficits of conscious perception, occurring at earlier stages than access to working memory. However, the perceptual deficit in RB is more severe, which may be related to higher overall negativity in response to repeated targets observed 150-300 ms after stimulus onset, suggesting stronger cortical baseline activation and higher perceptual threshold for repeated targets as compared with unrepeated ones.

Abstract:Abstract Visual word recognition is commonly rapid and efficient, incorporating top–down predictive processing mechanisms. Neuroimaging studies with face stimuli suggest that repetition suppression (RS) reflects predictive processing at the neural level, as this effect is larger when repetitions are more frequent, that is, more expected. It remains unclear, however, at the temporal level whether and how RS and its modulation by expectation occur in visual word recognition. To address this gap, the present study aimed to investigate the presence and time course of these effects during visual word recognition using EEG. Thirty-six native Cantonese speakers were presented with pairs of Chinese written words and performed a nonlinguistic oddball task. The second word of a pair was either a repetition of the first or a different word (alternation). In repetition blocks, 75% of trials were repetitions and 25% were alternations, whereas the reverse was true in alternation blocks. Topographic analysis of variance of EEG at each time point showed robust RS effects in three time windows (141–227 msec, 242–445 msec, and 467–513 msec) reflecting facilitation of visual word recognition. Importantly, the modulation of RS by expectation was observed at the late rather than early intervals (334–387 msec, 465–550 msec, and 559–632 msec) and more than 100 msec after the first RS effects. In the predictive coding view of RS, only late repetition effects are modulated by expectation, whereas early RS effects may be mediated by lower-level predictions. Taken together, our findings provide the first EEG evidence revealing distinct temporal dynamics of RS effects and P(rep) effects in visual processing of Chinese words.

Abstract:The aim of the present experiment was to determine whether color-based repetition disadvantage occurred under the condition of unidentified location of a target and 800ms SOA.The response time of the target was slower while the color of cue and target was same than that which was different and no matter how the location of cue and target was same or not.The result suggested that inhibition of return mechanism underlie the color-based repetition disadvantage effect and color,as location and object,be essential to attention searching.

Abstract:Repeated and orthographically similar words are vulnerable in RSVP, as observed using the repetition blindness (RB) paradigm. Prior researchers have claimed that RB is increased for emotion words, but the mechanism for this was unclear. We argued that RB should be reduced for words with properties that capture attention, such as emotion words. Employing orthographic repetition blindness, our data showed that words with negative emotional valence had a report advantage when they were the second of two similar words (e.g., less RB occurred with HORSE curse than with HORSE purse). This renders emotion RB similar to the use of emotion words in the attentional blink phenomenon. The findings demonstrate the neglected role of competition in conscious recognition of multiple words under conditions of brief display and masking.

Abstract:With different stimulus onset asynchrony ( SOA) , the effects of task type on color-based repetition disadvan-tage ( RD) effect were explored in 2 experiments.When the task type was detection task, the color-based RD effect is the repetition blindness in nature.However, when the task demand was color discrimination, the RD effect tend to be explained as the color-based inhibition of return.The results can be appropriately explained by the token indi-viduation theory.Further analysis, the author proposes that the level of semantic processing of target stimulus is the fundamental determinants.Experiment 3 was used to Go/No go task, the results showed color-based IOR as same as experiment 2 , which can be explained by the theory of “Evaluation Window Account”.
Can attenuation of attentional blink also evoke removal of repetition blindness?

Abstract:A recent study showed that attentional blink (AB), which has been considered to reflect the capacity limitation of visual temporal attention, can be attenuated after a short period of the color-salient training, in which the second target (T2) within the AB period is given a salient color (Choi et al., 2012). The current study explored whether the effect of the color-salient training could be transferred to another phenomenon. In addition to AB, repetition blindness (RB) was employed, which is phenomenologically similar to, but fundamentally different from AB. After completion of the color-salient training with a nonrepeated T2 (corresponding to AB), RB was still observed, whereas AB was completely removed. However, the color-salient training with a repeated T2 (similar to RB) induced not only a significant reduction of RB but also an attenuation of AB. This result provides further evidence for dissociation between AB and RB. In addition, it implies that the color-salient training improves the attentional control mechanism related to target-distractor discrimination rather than to the perceptual system.

Abstract:Since there are no spaces between words to mark word boundaries in Chinese, it is common to see 2 identical neighboring characters in natural text. Usually, this occurs when there are 2 adjacent words containing the same character (we will call such a coincidental sequence of 2 identical characters repeated characters). In the present study, we examined how Chinese readers process words when there are repeated characters. In 3 experiments, we compared how Chinese readers process 4-character strings including 2 repeated characters (e.g, pinyin: xingdong dongji, meaning behavioral motivation) with a control condition where none of the characters repeat (e.g, pinyin: xingdong yuwa`ng, meaning behavioral desire). In Experiment 1, the 4-character strings were presented for 40 ms and participants were asked to report as many characters as possible. Participants reported the second and third characters less accurately in the repeated condition than the control condition. In Experiments 2A and 2B, we embedded 2 different types of 4-character strings, compound Chinese characters and simple Chinese characters, into the same sentence frames, and asked participants to read these sentences normally. Gaze duration and total time on the second word were significantly longer in the repeated condition. These results suggest that the repeated characters increased the difficulty of word processing. Moreover, the results are consistent with the predictions of serial models, which assumes that words are processed serially in reading.

Expectations About the Temporal Structure of the World Result in the Attentional Blink and Repetition Blindness

Abstract:We consider how repetition blindness and the attentional blink might arise from prior assumptions about the occurrence of task-relevant states of the world. Repetition blindness and the attentional blink are behavioral deficits in the identification of items during rapid serial visual presentation at varying delays after identifying the first “target.” Here we propose that both of these effects are explained by rational inference given prior expectations about the timing of task-relevant world transitions. While such expectations would be helpful in the natural world, they may result in unanticipated biases in laboratory settings. We show that a rational model using prior expectations of the timing of task-relevant information captures the basic repetition blindness and the attentional blink effects, and also the specific distributions of errors made during the attentional blink.

Abstract:Text reading is one of the most complex and unique human cognitive activities and is also an important source of information.By repetition effect or reading benefit we mean that when a word or text is read twice,the reading time generally decreases during the second occurrence,because memory of the first occurrence facilitates reprocessing during the second occurrence.Because repetition effects provide a sensitive,implicit measure of the content and structure of memory,much research has been devoted to understanding the source of text repetition effects.In the present study,three experiments explored the levels of text representation that mediate text repetition effects in Chinese,following the Raney's context dependent continuum model.Participants read a set of short passages,each twice in succession.Experiment 1 examined whether there had repetition benefits in reading.The results showed that there had been repetition benefits in reading,and people tended to name a title to the text.In Experiment 2,four passages' sentences were disrupted to form a bad situation model.The magnitude of the repetition benefit supported predictions of Raney's model,indicating that the ease of forming a situation model contributed to the magnitude of the reprocessing benefit.In addition,representations organized around a good situation model were more sensitive to changes than were representations formed from reading without a good situation model.Two new factors were added to Experiment 3:paired related passages and interval condition.The results of experiment 3 did not support the suggestion that the surface form and textbase are bound to a well-developed situation model,thereby limiting repetition effects to similar linguistic contexts.Rather,the nature of the repetition benefits in the present series of experiments are better explained by the degree of overlap between passages at each of the three levels of text representation.The findings of this study suggest that there is a repetition benefit in Chinese reading,and a good situation model is an important factor in producing the repetition benefits.Overall,the experiments reported here suggest that Raney's model can make a substantial contribution to explanations of how texts are represented in memory and how these representations can be recruited to the services of increased reading fluency.The result of experiment 3 is not totally in line with Raney's context-dependent representation model,and we think abstract and episodic accounts are also key factors affecting text reading.The results of these experiments provide preliminary support for the idea that the degree of overlap at each level of representation determines how much of a repetition benefit there is between passages.But understanding the source of text repetition effects still needs further investigation.
