Abstract:The development of manufacturing industry affects the operation of Chinese economy, and it is necessary to study the possible configuration paths of servitization transformation to support sustainable development. Based on previous studies of manufacturing servitization transformation, it is extended to explore multifactor combinations which affects servitization transformation performance. This paper constructs technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework of servitization transformation performance evaluation and uses fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) method to analyze the key factors and mechanism of servitization transformation with the data of 28 Chinese manufacturing enterprises. The results reveal that the six major factors are not the necessary conditions, and single-factor cannot effectively promote servitization transformation of Chinese manufacturing enterprises. There are four configurations which can be divided into three paths to improve servitization transformation performance. Based on the results of analysis, it proposes strategies to promote the development of Chinese manufacturing enterprises, such as developing targeted servitization strategies, enhancing technology development, and improving technology applications. The findings reveal the mechanism of multiple factors behind the evolution of manufacturing servitization transformation and take useful suggestions for the high-level development of Chinese manufacturing enterprises.

Abstract:This paper examines the challenges and opportunities faced by China's manufacturing industry in the context of global value chain division and technological revolution. It explores the impact of manufacturing servitization on enterprise value chain advancement, aiming to address how this transformation affects climbing the enterprise value chain. Drawing on data from Chinese industrial enterprises between 2003 and 2013, this study employs micro-level empirical analysis using a two-way fixed effect regression model and 2SLS instrumental variable method to establish a causal relationship between manufacturing servitization and enterprise value chain advancement. The findings reveal that manufacturing servitization has a significant positive impact on climbing the enterprise value chain, particularly for technology-intensive, capital-intensive, and resource-intensive enterprises. By providing empirical evidence and policy implications for China's manufacturing industry transformation and upgrading efforts, this research enriches existing literature on both manufacturing servitization and value chain advancement.

Abstract:Purpose Servitization has been recognized as an effective means for manufacturers to achieve superior performance. However, the servitization-performance relationship is controversial since prior empirical studies have provided inconsistent and even contradictory results. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to provide a quantitative review on the servitization-performance relationship based on research findings reported in the extant literature. Design/methodology/approach Studies from 41 peer-reviewed journal articles were sampled and analyzed. A meta-analytic approach was adopted to conduct a quantitative review on the relationship between servitization and firm performance. Findings The results confirm a positive servitization-performance relationship. In addition, the results reveal that the observed servitization-performance relationship is influenced by the operationalization of constructs (servitization and performance) and control variables (industry and region). Originality/value As the first meta-analysis on the servitization-performance relationship, this study contributes to the servitization literature and provides future research directions.
The Evolutional Path and Characteristics of Servitization for Manufacturing Enterprises in China: A Case Study on Shangu Blower Group

Abstract:Based on literature review of servitization for manufacturing enterprises,this paper investigates the evolutional path and its characteristics of manufacturing enterprises from the relationship between firms' product function and their customer's outcomes,and studies the product service system of Shangu blower group as a case.The results show that:①there are two kinds of basic ways in the process of services transformation for manufacturing enterprises,which are single product-oriented service mode and product portfolio-oriented service mode;②there are several significant stage features during the transformation of servitization which subject to organizational competences,technological base and customers' relationship;③the single product-oriented service mode plays a role in the primary stage of the servitization in which firms focus on improving the function input of customers' production system that intensify potential competitive advantage of firms;and ④ the product portfolio service mode plays a role in the advanced stage of the servitization in which firms focus on promoting the function output of customers' production system that enhance current and sustainable competitive advantage for manufacturing enterprises.

Abstract:In the context of the great changes of the global value network pattern, the servitization of manufacturing has become an important strategy for the transformation and upgrading of multinational enterprises. China's manufacturing industry has been in the core area of the global value network, creating a lot of export value, but the quality of development needs to be improved. Especially, the servitization level and structure of China's manufacturing have a great space for development. The servitization level affects the international competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises, and their power status in the global value network depends on their international competitiveness to a large extent. With value-added trade data, inter-country input-output tables and China's industrial economic data, there is a simultaneous equations model in this paper to systematically study the impact of servitization of manufacturing on the upgrading of power status in the global value network. The empirical results show that the servitization level of the manufacturing significantly improves the competitiveness of the export value-added, and then affects its core position in the global network. This is a transmission mechanism with a complete mediating effect. Heterogeneity studies show that both commercial and noncommercial servitization have positive impacts on the status of China's manufacturing in the global value network, but the difference is significant. The distance between service and production, and the development stage of service dominance are the main reasons for the difference. China's manufacturing enterprises should optimize the allocation structure of production factors and strengthen their own service-oriented transformation to improve the core competitiveness, especially in the forms of digital servitization and financial servitization. And the government should innovate public service supply to carry out economic governance.

Abstract:Abstract The servitization of the manufacturing sector refers to the evolution of manufacturers' capabilities to offer services as complements to or substitutes for the goods that they produce. A vast literature has described these strategies and has shown that this phenomenon is widespread and growing in most developed economies. However, very little systematic evidence of the extent or consequences of servitization based on a comprehensive data set of firms exists. In this paper, we provide such evidence using exhaustive data for French manufacturing firms between 1997 and 2007. We find that the vast majority of French manufacturers sell services in addition to producing goods. The shift toward services is growing steadily but at a slow pace. We also estimate the impact of servitization on firm performance. Controlling for various sources of endogeneity bias, our most conservative results show that firms that start selling services increase their profitability by 0.4%, their employment by 2.1%, and their total sales by 0.6%. For small businesses, we also find a positive impact on the production of goods. We also uncover strong heterogeneity across manufacturing industries.

Abstract:Abstract This paper measures manufacturing service input at the micro level of export enterprises to investigate the pollution reduction effects of manufacturing servitization and examines the mechanism from the perspective of GVC activities of multinational corporations. The study finds that (1) servitization generally reduces the pollution emission intensity of export enterprises, and this effect is widespread among enterprises of various ownership types, pollution-intensive and nonpollution-intensive enterprises, and enterprises in the eastern and western regions; (2) there is a "U-shaped" nonlinear effect of servitization on the pollution reduction of export enterprises, indicating that in the initial stage of servitization, the increase in service elements in manufacturing will lead to an increase in enterprise emissions, and only when the servitization degree reaches a certain threshold will a significant pollution reduction effect be observed; and (3) the "domestic-foreign" and "foreign-domestic" types of GVC activities characterizing the connections between multinational corporations and local enterprises have a moderating effect on the pollution reduction impact of servitization. This study has significant implications for promoting the green development of enterprises through manufacturing servitization in the context of GVCs. JEL classification numbers: F18, L60. Examination Study to the Impact of Manufacturing Sub-Sector Servitisation on the Enterprise Performance

Abstract:Many of scholars have found that the shallow level of servitisation to have negative influence on the performance of the manufacturing enterprises, and lead to 'paradox of servitisation'. Based on divisions Chinese manufacturing sub-sector enterprise data from 2003 to 2011 as the research sample we analysed to the problem. The empirical results show that, in the meantime all sectors 'Servitisation-Performance' curve appeared rock bottom inflection point of 'paradox of servitisation', but the difference is that food and beverage processing and textile manufacturing industry curves is 'U' style, but manufacture of transport equipment and manufacture of communication equipment, computers and other electronic equipment industry will rise at the beginning of the service performance, therefore presents as a 'saddle' style curve.

Abstract:As the profits of manufacturing enterprises come under ever increasing pressure, the transformation of the enterprise development mode becomes urgent. The implementation of modern manufacturing services (MMS) helps to improve an enterprise's profits and enhance its competitiveness and has become one of the best ways to transform and upgrade enterprises. The implementation of MMS needs a methodology to guide evaluation of an enterprise's current service development phase and level. In this article, first a universal Enterprise Manufacturing Service Maturity Model (EMSMM) was proposed, which contains four service phases and two service levels. Second, a building methodology for the EMSMM for a specific industry was put forward. Third, an evaluation methodology for enterprise MMS phases and levels was provided. Finally, the adoption of these methods by a Chinese manufacturing enterprise was described. The results show that the EMSMM can provide effective scientific decision-making for an enterprise's current service development phase and level.

Abstract:To gain sustainable development, it is a trend that manufacturing companies are change the value chain from manufacturing-centric to service-centric. Therefore, the capability of the manufacturing service is as significant as the production ability of enterprises, which reflects the supply chain management (SCM), flexible production, production efficiency, and other indicators of the enterprises. It is the first paper to discuss the sustainability of service-oriented manufacturing using bibliometric analysis. It derives a detailed review and future outlook on the development of manufacturing servitization, indicating the research directions for future development, and provides a valuable reference for researchers in related directions. The bibliometric analysis discusses countries or regions, research areas, authors, keywords, institutions, and journals based on the literature data from the Web of Science (WoS). The results show that research on manufacturing services has gradually received attention since its inception and has become popular since 2008. The papers published from 2008 to 2021 account for 77.62%. The USA is the most studied country on this topic, followed by China and the UK. The International Journal of Production Research regarding the most quantity of articles, and Beihang University is the most influential institution in this field. The largest amount of articles published in the area of "business and economics", amounting to 1565 articles. In recent years, the main research areas included "Industry 4.0", "cloud manufacturing (CMfg)", "Internet of Things (IoT)", "big data" and "services innovation". Finally, "digital and intelligent manufacturing" and "product-service systems" are potential research directions for the future.

Abstract:A self-organization model for manufacturing servitization systems was established for manufacturing enterprises providing customers with products and services characterized by complexity, and the intelligent application of manu-facturing servitization was initially realized. The model includes the design of manufacturing servitization, the formation of manufacturing servitization and other self-organization processes. Simultaneously, a scale-free network model for manufacturing service units was constructed to analyze the degree distribution characteristics of in-degree and out-degree of manufacturing service units. In the design of manufacturing servitization, a function-structure-service model for manufacturing servitization systems was built, the product solutions were realized by using axiomatic design method, and the service programs were implemented by digging need of the customers. In the formation of manufacturing servitization, the process of manufacturing servitization systems was generated by applying the manufacturing scale-free network service unit. The effectiveness of the self-organization model for manufacturing servitization systems, and the advantages of the modeling and analysis based on scale-free network were verified through the example of bottle blowing machine system designing and formation.
How Does Servitization Affect Firm Performance?

Abstract:Servitization by manufacturing firms has been a growing trend in recent years. However, the literature is unclear on whether servitization improves firm performance. Using survey data from 334 Chinese manufacturing firms, we examine how servitization affects firm performance. We also investigate the contingent role of platform-based innovation. Our results show that servitization enhances latent needs identification and worsens dominant logics conflict. Platform-based innovation is effective in mitigating harm from dominant logics conflict, but it also limits the transfer of latent customer needs. This article contributes to the literature by identifying underlying mediating effects between servitization and firm performance to explain how servitization affects firm performance. The findings also address the “service paradox.”

Abstract:Servitization innovation is critical for manufacturing firms to strengthen their sustainable competitive advantage in a dynamic business environment. Current research on the relationship between servitization and firm performance has matured, but many conclusion remain divergent. That cannot only hinder the development of servitization theory, but also make manufacturers lack a scientific basis for deciding whether to develop servitization. Thus, this study aims to systematically analyze the quantitative research results in this field through Meta-analysis methods to reveal the reasons for the disagreement. After collecting 59 independent articles on servitization and firm performance, this study performed statistical analysis using Meta-analysis. Then, the relationship between servitization and firm performance was explored, as well as the effects of different potential moderating variables. The moderate positive relationship between servitization strategies and their different orientations and firm performance is found. For the moderating variables, the servitization strategy has a more significant effect on non-financial performance. And they are more correlated when there are mediator variables. The impact of firm servitization transformation in developing regions is better than in developed areas. A stable market environment is more beneficial to the servitization transformation. The transformation effect of high-tech manufacturing is better than that of traditional manufacturing. And the transformation effect of large companies is better than that of small and medium-sized companies.

Abstract:Servitization has significant implications for the sustainable development of manufacturing, the economy, and the environment. However, it does not always produce returns as the firms expect, which may discourage them from engaging in this transition. In this study, we examine the facilitating effects of two dimensions of strategic orientation (i.e., technology and market orientation) on two types of servitization (i.e., basic and advanced service provision), and further investigate the performance impacts of these servitization types contingent on firm size. By conducting an empirical study, using survey data comprising 210 samples, we confirm that both technology and market orientation are positively related to basic and advanced service provision. Moreover, while they have equal effects on basic services, market orientation is more important than technology orientation for providing advanced services. We also find that, for basic services, these two strategic orientations function independently, whereas they reinforce each other in the provision of advanced services. Finally, the relationship between servitization and firm performance is contingent on the size of the firm. Our results show that small firms can benefit from providing basic services, rather than advanced services, while only advanced services can improve the performance of large firms further.

Abstract:Service plays an increasingly important role in modern manufacturing: (a) Services and physical products are integrated into one product service system (PSS) to provide a comprehensive solution for customers; (b) The companies involved in offering PSS focus on specialized sectors, and provide producer services for one another. In this paper, the new product pattern together with the innovative manufacturing paradigm is called service-oriented manufacturing. The competitive advantage of a PSS can be originated from products or services, and the ownership of PSS’s may or may not be transferred from sellers to buyers during transactions. Various PSS’s were categorized into three classes. The characteristics of each type of PSS’s and the shift between them are discussed. Many companies, which provide producer services and manufacturing services to one another, form a service-based manufacturing network. The reasons why producer services act as intermediate goods among different companies and motivations for companies to outsource their business processes are analyzed economically. Many companies in different segments of the production-chain may have discrepant profitability. Technology strength and industry insight competences are adopted to explain the discrepant values added from various segments along the production chain. Service-oriented manufacturing is summarized from the perspectives of business model, industry insight and technology strength (BIT).

Abstract:Although servitization is a buzz word in the current manufacturing industry, challenges have been identified in different aspects, leading to contested performance outcomes, which make manufacturing firms hesitant to embark on the journey of servitization. In this paper, conceptualizing servitization as two service-oriented strategies, namely services supporting the product (SSP) and services supporting the clients' actions (SSC), we investigate the servitization-performance link and find that both servitization strategies have no effect on firm performance. However, given that a main-effect-only analysis provides an incomplete picture of servitization-performance relationship, considering three critical factors, namely service-oriented organizational structure (Structure), service-oriented human resource management (HR), and service-oriented corporate culture (Culture), adopting a combined configuration and contingency approach, based on analysis of data collected from 207 Chinese manufacturing firms, we find that contingent configurations, i.e., the SSP-Culture-Structure configuration and the SSC-Culture-HR configuration, are positively associated with firm performance. Our findings identify the existence of the “service paradox,” unveil the contingent configurations of servitization and three critical internal organizational elements, highlight the intrinsic attributes of the three factors in the context of servitization, and address the complex servitization effects on firm performance and the solution of the “service paradox” by making proper internal organizational changes.
Key factors of service design methodology for manufacturing servitization

Abstract:With progressions in technology and high demand for value, business model designs based on cooperative systems are essential for innovative manufacturing servitization. Previous studies, which focused on product innovation or specific industries, either lacked standardized steps or promoted inconsistent processes and tools. Therefore, an integrated, holistic evaluation for designing and using service design methodologies was essential. Examining previous research, this study derived key factors categorized through focus group interviews with 13 experts. The analytic hierarchy process was used to derive weights for each factor to rank the level of importance. The results revealed the key factors of service design methodology: utility, systematicness, innovation, and convergence. Lower factors included the applicability to reality, ease of use, representation of needs, composition feasibility, customer value scalability, industrial convergence, flexibility, output clarity, collaboration support, and business improvement. The results of this study may be used as a basis for the development and selective adoption of service design methodologies in macroscopic terms. The study provides a direction for innovation and improving business models. It also serves as an academic foundation for industrial service innovation and ecosystem creation.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Servitization of manufacturing has become one of the main pathways for transition and upgrade in the manufacturing industry. New information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as the Internet of Things, Big Data, and Cloud Computing have enabled the servitization of manufacturing in terms of value creation, resource management, and supply chain management. This study presents a comprehensive review on the servitization in operations management in the era of new ICTs. A new value chain framework is proposed under the business model that revolves around servitization, which showcases the new activities and ways of implementation in the era of new ICTs. The virtualization, configuration, and evaluation of integrated manufacturing and service resources are analyzed. In particular, the methods used in new ICT-supported resource management platforms are surveyed. Problems in the supply chain management in manufacturing services (including the selection of partners, as well as the coordination, planning, and scheduling among members) are presented. This study concludes with a discussion on state-of-the-art servitization in operations management in the era of new ICTs.</p>
