Abstract:Many chemical indices have been invented in theoretical chemistry, such as Wiener index, Merrifield-Simmons index, Hosoya index, spectral radius and Randic index, etc. The extremal trees and unicyclic graphs for these chemical indices are interested in existing literature. Let G be a molecular graph (called a cacti), which all of blocks of G are either edges or cycles. Denote g(n,r) the set of cacti of order n and with r cycles. Obviously, g(n,0) is the set of all trees and g(n, 1) is the set of all unicyclic graphs. In this paper, we present a unified approach to the extremal cactus, which have the same or very similar structures, for Wiener index, Merrifield-Simmons index, Hosoya index and spectral radius. From our results, we can derive sonic known results.

Abstract:Identifying graphs with extremal properties is an extensively studied topic in both topological graph theory and spectral graph theory. As observed in the literature, for many graph categories the extremal graphs with respect to some prescribed topological index or spectral invariant are the same. Therefore, it is an interesting problem to find a unified method to identify the extremal graphs for a set of topological or spectral invariants. Here we consider the majorization theorem to obtain extremal graphs in the class of trees, unicyclic graphs and bicyclic graphs with given order and fixed maximum degree, independence number, matching number, domination number, and/or number of pendant vertices, respectively.

Abstract:Gutman and Wagner proposed the concept of the matching energy which is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the zeros of the matching polynomial of a graph. And they pointed out that the chemical applications of matching energy go back to the 1970s. Let T be a tree with n vertices. In this paper, we characterize the trees whose complements have the maximal, second-maximal and minimal matching energy. Furthermore, we determine the trees with edge-independence number p whose complements have the minimum matching energy for p = 1, 2, . . . , [n/2]. When we restrict our consideration to all trees with a perfect matching, we determine the trees whose complements have the second-maximal matching energy.

Abstract:Recently, D. Vukičević and J. Sedlar in [1] introduced an order "<math>⪯</math>" on <math>Tn,</math> the set of trees on <math>n</math> vertices, such that the topological index <math>F</math> of a graph is a function defined on the order set <math>〈Tn,⪯〉</math>. It provides a new approach to determine the extremal graphs with respect to topological index <math>F</math>. By using the method they determined the common maximum and/or minimum graphs of <math>Tn</math> with respect to topological indices of Wiener type and anti-Wiener type. Motivated by their researches we further study the order set <math>〈Tn,⪯〉</math> and give a criterion to determine its order, which enable us to get the common extremal graphs in four prescribed subclasses of <math>〈Tn,⪯〉</math>. All these extremal graphs are confirmed to be the common maximum and/or minimum graphs with respect to the topological indices of Wiener type and anti-Wiener type. Additionally, we calculate the exact values of Wiener index for the extremal graphs in the order sets <math>〈C(n,k),⪯〉,</math> <math>〈Tn(q),⪯〉</math> and <math>〈TnΔ,⪯〉</math>.

Abstract:Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the Turán number $ex(n, \mathcal{F})$ denotes the maximum number of edges in any $\mathcal{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Recently, Alon and Frankl studied of maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\{K_{k+1}, M_{s+1}\}$-free graph, where $K_{k+1}$ is a complete graph on $k+1$ vertices and $M_{s+1}$ is a matching of $s+1$ edges. They determined the exact value of $ex(n, \{K_{k+1},M_{s+1}\})$. In this paper, we extend the matching $M_{s+1}$ to star forest $(s+1)S_l$, and determine the exact value of $ex(n, \{K_{k+1},(s+1)S_l\})$ for sufficiently large enough $n$. Furthermore, all the extremal graphs are obtained.

Abstract:For a family of graphs , a graph is called -free if it does not contain any member of as a subgraph. The generalized Turán number (n,K_r,) is the maximum number of K_r in an n-vertex -free graph and (n,K_2,)=(n,), i.e., the classical Turán number. Let M_s+1 be a matching on s+1 edges and F be any graph. In this paper, we determine (n,K_r, {M_s+1,F}) apart from a constant additive term and also give a condition when the error constant term can be determined. In particular, we give the exact value of (n,{M_s+1,F}) for F being any non-bipartite graph or some bipartite graphs. Furthermore, we determine (n,K_r,{M_s+1,F}) when F is color critical with χ(F)≥max{r+1,4}. These extend the results in [2,11,18].
Finding Spanning Trees with Perfect Matchings

Abstract:We investigate the tractability of a simple fusion of two fundamental structures on graphs, a spanning tree and a perfect matching. Specifically, we consider the following problem: given an edge-weighted graph, find a minimum-weight spanning tree among those containing a perfect matching. On the positive side, we design a simple greedy algorithm for the case when the graph is complete (or complete bipartite) and the edge weights take at most two values. On the negative side, the problem is NP-hard even when the graph is complete (or complete bipartite) and the edge weights take at most three values, or when the graph is cubic, planar, and bipartite and the edge weights take at most two values. We also consider an interesting variant. We call a tree strongly balanced if on one side of the bipartition of the vertex set with respect to the tree, all but one of the vertices have degree $2$ and the remaining one is a leaf. This property is a sufficient condition for a tree to have a perfect matching, which enjoys an additional property. When the underlying graph is bipartite, strongly balanced spanning trees can be written as matroid intersection, and this fact was recently utilized to design an approximation algorithm for some kind of connectivity augmentation problem. The natural question is its tractability in nonbipartite graphs. As a negative answer, it turns out NP-hard to test whether a given graph has a strongly balanced spanning tree or not even when the graph is subcubic and planar.

Abstract:When considering the number of subtrees of trees, the extremal structures which maximize this number among binary trees and trees with a given maximum degree lead to some interesting facts that correlate to other graphical indices in applications. The number of subtrees in the extremal cases constitute sequences which are of interest to number theorists. The structures which maximize or minimize the number of subtrees among general trees, binary trees and trees with a given maximum degree have been identified previously. Most recently, results of this nature are generalized to trees with a given degree sequence. In this note, we characterize the trees which maximize the number of subtrees among trees of a given order and degree sequence. Instead of using theoretical arguments, we take an algorithmic approach that explicitly describes the process of achieving an extremal tree from any random tree. The result also leads to some interesting questions and provides insight on finding the trees close to extremal and their numbers of subtrees.

Abstract:The energy of a graph is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of the graph. F. Zhang, H. Li [On acyclic conjugated molecules with minimal energies, Discrete Appl. Math. 92 (1999) 71–84] characterized the trees with a perfect matching having the minimal and the second minimal energies, which solved a conjecture proposed by I. Gutman [Acyclic conjugated molecules, trees and their energies, J. Math. Chem. 1 (1987) 123–143]. In this letter, for a given positive integer d we characterize the tree with the minimal energy having diameter at least d. As a corollary, we also characterize the tree with the minimal Hosoya index having diameter at least d.

Abstract:In this paper we study the following extremal graph theoretic problem: Given an undirected Eulerian graph $G$, which Eulerian orientation minimizes or maximizes the number of arborescences? We solve the minimization for the complete graph $K_n$, the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$, and for the so-called double graphs, where there are even number of edges between any pair of vertices. In fact, for $K_n$ we prove the following stronger statement. If $T$ is a tournament on $n$ vertices with out-degree sequence $d_1^+,\dots ,d^+_n$, then $$\mathrm{allarb}(T)\geq \frac{1}{n}\left(\prod_{k=1}^n(d^+_k+1)+\prod_{k=1}^nd^+_k\right),$$ where $\mathrm{allarb}(T)$ is the total number of arborescences. Equality holds if and only if $T$ is a locally transitive tournament. We also give an upper bound for the number of arborescences of an Eulerian orientation for an arbitrary graph $G$. This upper bound can be achieved on $K_n$ for infinitely many $n$.

Abstract:For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and $v_{i}\in V$, denote by $d_{v_{i}}$ (or $d_{i}$ for short) the degree of vertex $v_{i}$. The $p$-Sombor matrix $\textbf{S}_{\textbf{p}}(G)$ ($p\neq0$) of a graph $G$ is a square matrix, where the $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $\displaystyle (d_{i}^{p}+d_{j}^{p})^{\frac{1}{p}}$ if the vertices $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$ are adjacent, and 0 otherwise. The $p$-Sombor spectral radius of $G$, denoted by $\displaystyle \rho(\textbf{S}_{\textbf{p}}(G))$, is the largest eigenvalue of the $p$-Sombor matrix $\textbf{S}_{\textbf{p}}(G)$. In this paper, we consider the extremal trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs with respect to the $p$-Sombor spectral radii. We characterize completely the extremal graphs with the first three maximum Sombor spectral radii, which answers partially a problem posed by Liu et al. in [MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 87 (2022) 59-87].

Perfect Matchings and Essential Spanning Forests in Hyperbolic Double Circle Packings

Abstract:We investigate perfect matchings and essential spanning forests in planar hyperbolic graphs via circle packings. We prove the existence of nonconstant harmonic Dirichlet functions that vanish in a closed set of the boundary, generalizing a result in \cite{bsinv}. We then prove the existence of extremal infinite volume measures for uniform spanning forests with partially wired boundary conditions and partially free boundary conditions, generalizing a result in \cite{BLPS01}. Using the double circle packing for a pair of dual graphs, we relate the inverse of the weighted adjacency matrix to the difference of Green's functions plus an explicit harmonic Dirichlet function. This gives explicit formulas for the probabilities of any cylindrical events. We prove that the infinite-volume Gibbs measure obtained from approximations by finite domains with exactly two convex white corners converging to two distinct points along the boundary is extremal, yet not invariant with respect to a finite-orbit subgroup of the automorphism group. We then show that under this measure, a.s.~there are no infinite contours in the symmetric difference of two i.i.d.~random perfect matchings. As an application, we prove that the variance of the height difference of two i.i.d.~uniformly weighted perfect matchings under the boundary condition above on a transitive nonamenable planar graph is always finite; in contrast to the 2D uniformly weighted dimer model on a transitive amenable planar graph as proved in \cite{RK01,KOS06}, where the variance of height difference grows in the order of $\log n$, with $n$ being the graph distance to the boundary. This also implies that a.s.~each point is surrounded by finitely many cycles in the symmetric difference of two i.i.d.~perfect matchings, again in contrast to the 2D Euclidean case.

Abstract:A general exponential vertex-degree-based topological index (exponential VDB index for short) Tef of a graph G is the summation of ef(d(u),d(v)) , where f(x,y) is a symmetric real function with x≥1 and y≥1 , and the summation is over all uv∈E(G) . We give the sufficient conditions for that (1) the path is the only tree with the minimal Tef ; (2) the star is the only tree with the maximal Tef ; (3) the balanced double star is the only tree with the maximal Tef , respectively. The extremal trees for some exponential VDB indices are determined.

In this paper, utilizing a celebrated theorem of Hajnal and Szemerédi together with some results of Chen, Lih, and Wu, and of Kierstead and Kostochka, we determine ex(n,3Kp+1) and ex(t(p+1),tKp+1) , and characterize all extremal graphs EX(t(p+1),tKp+1) for all positive integers t , n , and p with p≥2 .

Abstract:Let . Motivated by the notion of jumbled graphs introduced by Thomason, the expander mixing lemma and Haemers's vertex separation inequality, we say that a graph G with n vertices is a weakly -graph if holds for every pair of disjoint proper subsets X , Y of V ( G ) with no edge between X and Y . It is an -graph if in addition X and Y are not necessarily disjoint. Using graph eigenvalues, we show that every graph can be an -graph and/or a weakly -graph for some specific value . For instances, the expander mixing lemma implies that a d -regular graph on n vertices with the second largest absolute eigenvalue at most is an -graph, and Haemers's vertex separation inequality implies that every graph is a weakly -graph with , where denotes the i -th smallest Laplacian eigenvalue. This motivates us to study -graph and weakly -graph in general. Our main results include the following. (i) For any weakly -graph G , the matching number . If in addition G is a ( U , W )-bipartite graph with where , then . (ii) For any -graph G , If in addition G is a ( U , W )-bipartite graph with and no isolated vertices, then . (iii) If G is a weakly -graph for or an -graph for , then G has a fractional perfect matching. In addition, G has a perfect matching when n is even and G is factor-critical when n is odd. (iv) For any connected -graph G , the toughness . For any connected weakly -graph G , and if n is large enough, then for any . The results imply many old and new results in spectral graph theory, including several new lower bounds on matching number, fractional matching number and toughness from eigenvalues. In particular, we obtain a new lower bound on toughness via normalized Laplacian eigenvalues that extends a theorem originally conjectured by Brouwer from regular graphs to general graphs.

Abstract:Consider that $\mathbb{G}=(\mathbb{X}, \mathbb{Y})$ is a simple, connected graph with $\mathbb{X}$ as the vertex set and $\mathbb{Y}$ as the edge set. The atom-bond connectivity ($ABC$) index is a novel topological index that Estrada introduced in Estrada et al. (1998). It is defined as $$ A B C(\mathbb{G})=\sum_{xy \in Y(\mathbb{G})} \sqrt{\frac{\zeta_x+\zeta_y-2}{\zeta_x \zeta_y}} $$ where $\zeta_x$ and $\zeta_x$ represent the degrees of the vertices $x$ and $y$, respectively. In this work, we explore the behavior of the $A B C$ index for tree graphs. We establish both lower and upper bounds for the $A B C$ index, expressed in terms of the graph's order and its Roman domination number. Additionally, we characterize the tree structures that correspond to these extremal values, offering a deeper understanding of how the Roman domination number ($RDN$) influences the $A B C$ index in tree graphs.

Abstract:A matching M of a graph G is called uniquely restricted if M is a unique perfect matching of the subgraph induced by M -saturated vertex set. A connected graph is called uniquely restricted matching extendable (abbreviated as -extendable) if every uniquely restricted matching is included in a perfect matching. A -extendable graph G is minimal if is not -extendable for any edge e . In this paper, we find all -extendable cubic graphs. For any integer , we construct some -regular -extendable graphs and -regular -extendable graphs. We show that is a minimal -extendable graph for any tree T . Finally, we show that the minimum size of -extendable graph G on 2 n vertices is and characterize the extreme graph.

Abstract:A number which is either the square of an integer or two times the square of an integer is called squarish. There are two main results in the literature on graphs whose number of perfect matchings is squarish: one due to Jockusch (for planar graphs invariant under rotation by 90 degrees) and the other due to the second author (concerning planar graphs with two perpendicular symmetry axes). We present in this paper a new such class, consisting of certain planar graphs that are only required to have one symmetry axis. Our proof relies on a natural bijection between the set of perfect matchings of two closely related (but not isomorphic!) families of graphs, which is interesting in its own right. The rephrasing of this bijection in terms of spanning trees turns out to be the most natural way to present this result.
