Abstract:SHPB equipment and experimental techniques were used to analyze and characterize the electromechanical effect in compact bone with different length and diameter under impacting,at the same time,the potential which was induced by strain were recorded.We have studied the relations among the electromechanical effects,the length of the specimen,different diameter and the time from the specimen left physiological solution.The experimental results demonstrate that the electromechanical effect of wet bone was more obvious than that of dry bone;the wet bone's hysteresis time was more obvious.The length of the specimen impact the electromechanical effect,the longer the specimen is,the more obvious of electromechanical effect,the same as diameter of the specimen.

Abstract:Bone’s stress-generated potentials (SGP) refers to the phenomenon that deformed osseous tissue can generated electric potentials caused by stress (normal physiological activities), in which piezoelectric effect and electrokinetic effect are mainly involved. The study on intraosseous potential amplitude and distribution during the dynamic process is not only a necessary procedure for figuring out the mechanism of electricity stimulating bone growth, but also a physiological basis for achieving bone cure and bone remodeling. On the one hand, bone’s SGP research is using mathematical method to describe its electric potential relationship with stress, strain, strain rate and loading rate, on the other hand, it is the investigation of the effect of physiological environments (pH, ion concentration, temperature, moisture) on electric potential. The paper first presents briefly the theory of SGP with emphasis laid on the summary ofits research methods, including theoretical models and experimental approaches such as split Hopkinson pressure bar attack, dynamic testing in bending and buffer, and then reviews SGP research in bone substitutes and dentin fields.

Abstract:It is important to determine the amplitude and variation characteristics of piezovoltage in wet bone, which can, in turn, be taken as a basis for studying whether electrical signals induced by external forces can affect the growth of bone cells. This work measured the characteristics of piezoelectric effects under dynamic and static loading. The results show that the variations of piezovoltage in wet bone in both loading and load holding periods follow a stretched exponential relaxation law, and the relaxation time constants of the piezovoltages are much larger than those of dry bone. This finding means that the active time of piezovoltage in wet bone is much longer than that of dry bone. Regardless of the loading and load holding processes, continuously increasing deformation in wet bone caused piezoelectric charges to be continuously induced and increased the dielectric constant of wet bone along with the deformation process. In general, compared with piezovoltage in dry bone, that in wet bone had lower amplitude and could exist for a longer duration. It can be inferred, therefore, that piezoelectricity might create coupling with the streaming potential in bone by changing the thickness of the double electrode layer.
Experimental study of time response of bending deformation of bone cantilevers in an electric field

Abstract:Bone is a complex composite material with hierarchical structures and anisotropic mechanical properties. Bone also processes electromechanical properties, such as piezoelectricity and streaming potentials, which termed as stress generated potentials. Furthermore, the electrostrictive effect and flexoelectric effect can also affect electromechanical properties of the bone. In the present work, time responses of bending deflections of bone cantilever in an external electric field are measured experimentally to investigate bone's electromechanical behavior. It is found that, when subjected to a square waveform electric field, a bone cantilever specimen begins to bend and its deflection increases gradually to a peak value. Then, the deflection begins to decrease gradually during the period of constant voltage. To analyze the reasons of the bending response of bone, additional experiments were performed. Experimental results obtained show the following two features. The first one is that the electric polarization, induced in bone by an electric field, is due to the Maxwell-Wagner polarization mechanism that the polarization rate is relatively slow, which leads to the electric field force acted on a bone specimen increase gradually and then its bending deflections increase gradually. The second one is that the flexoelectric polarization effect that resists the electric force to decrease and then leads to the bending deflection of a bone cantilever decrease gradually. It is concluded that the first aspect refers to the organic collagens decreasing the electric polarization rate of the bone, and the second one to the inorganic component influencing the bone's polarization intensity.

Abstract:The curves for the electromechanical potentials in a bone plate specimen with fluid flowing through it were determined. Some inaccurate conclusions in the author′s early published paper were modified. The cause of the electromechanical potentials existing in the bone plate was analyzed. It was justified that the dynamic and static electromechanical potentials in bone were caused mainly from streaming potentials, and not due to piezoelectricity.

Abstract:An exponential law is presented for modeling piezoelectric behavior of bone tissues. The law is established based on experimental observation and existing empirical decay function. The model is then used to investigate the relaxation behavior of pizeovoltages induced by external load. Piezovoltages between the two opposing surfaces of bovine tibia bone samples under three point bending deformation are measured using an ultra high input impedance bioamplifier. The experimental results indicate that the pizeovoltages of bone show different relaxation behaviors during loading and unloading process. It is found that the piezovoltage decay follows a stretched exponential law when the load increases from zero to its maximum value, while it follows a typical relaxation exponential law when the load is kept its maximum value. The stretching-exponential behavior is independent of loading amplitude and rate. One possible reason for causing the stretched exponential behavior may be due to the triple helices structure of collagen fibrils distributed randomly in bone, which can experience relatively large deformation under external loads. The deformation process may include self-deformation and relative slipping between the molecule chains. The relative slipping movements may change the dielectric constants and resistances of bone, which can lead to multiple relaxation time behaviors during the deformation process of bone.

Abstract:Dendrite growth is one of the main challenges in maintaining the service life of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Mechanical stress has been reported to significantly affect dendrite growth. In this study, to explain the effect of mechanical stress on electrochemical reactions in all-solid-state batteries, a modified phase-field model for dendrite growth is proposed by considering the stress-dependent overpotential. Dendrite growth under different mechanical loadings in an all-solid-state battery is investigated using the proposed model. Consistent with previous experimental results, the current result shows that compressive stress inhibits dendrite growth. Considering the stress concentration at the tips of processing-induced microcracks, the effects of the number and distribution of microcracks on dendrite growth are investigated. The results show that the stress-concentration field induced at the tips of cracks or voids can change the morphology of dendrites and decrease their growth rates. This study provides a new perspective for explaining Li dendrite growth under mechanical stress and offers inspiration for prolonging the service life of all-solid-state batteries based on defect and stress regulation, which may be further realized in experiments by filling solid electrolytes with different types of nanofillers.
An Experimental Study on the Behavior of Streaming Potentials in Bone Microchannels

Abstract:Mechanical loading is an important regulatory factor for bone mass and structure. Bone remodeling and formation are closely associated to metabolism. It is considered that electromechanical property of bone is a link between bone remodeling and mechanical loading, therefore, the streaming potential is one important direction in the electromechanical property of bone. The objective of this study is to confirm the difference of the produced streaming potential from buffer solution flowing through Haversian canal and bone canalicules by experiments. The streaming potential of eight bone specimens under five different loading rates was measured using self-designed testing system. The lateral surface of bone specimen was sealed by silicone rubber to simulate the flowing situation of buffer solution flowing through Haversian canal; while unsealed condition was used to simulate the situation of buffer solution flowing through Haversian canal and bone canalicules of osteon whose specimen surface was split at the same time. Result showed that corresponding to loading rates of 26, 36, 60, 180 and 360 kPa/s, when the lateral surface was sealed, the stable values of streaming potential respectively were (0.29 ± 0.09), (0.24 ± 0.06), (0.21 ± 0.05), (0.19 ± 0.05) and (0.16 ± 0.04) mV. Under unsealed condition, the streaming potential was (0.69 ± 0.08), (0.61 ± 0.09), (0.57 ± 0.07), (0.51 ± 0.05) and (0.46 ± 0.05) mV, which was apparently higher than that under sealed condition (P < 0.05). Besides, the difference between the potentials reflects that the produced streaming potential when the buffer solution was flowing through bone canalicules was higher than that when the buffer solution was flowing through Haversian canal. Based on the microstructure of bone and in consideration of bone cells are mainly distributed near the bone canalicules, the experimental results provide the basis for study of streaming potential and bone remodeling.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the mechanical properties, distributing law, correlation to strain rate and constitutive relationship of human fresh radius compact. Methods: Impact compressive experiment for human fresh radius compact bone at strain rate ε = 0.6 × 10 3 s -1 and ε = 1.2 × 10 3 s -1 by splis Hopkinson Pressure Bars (SHPB) were performed. Results: The mechanical properties of the compact bones varied along the longitudinal direction; the ultimate stress, breaking strain and dynamic compressive modulus at middle section were stronger than those at both ends and were asymmetrical. The ultimate stress and dynamic compressive modulus rose as the strain rate rose, which was very obvious in the section of high strain rate. The radius assumed a monlinear elastic mechanial property. Conclusion: Under impact compression the radius gets fractured easily at both ends, especially at distance section, and the fracture is related to time.

Abstract:Under simulated physiological loading state (walking and running), cattle femur's SGP was tested by INSTRON (8847) tester. Strictly speaking, the specimen was a large bone structure. Experiment results imply that human femur will also have voltage signals under the state of walking and running, and the voltage amplitude will become larger with the load and frequency increases. In addition, running's voltage amplitude is larger than that of walking.

Abstract:The piezoelectric properties of bone play an important role in the bone remodeling process and can be employed in clinical bone repair. In this study, the piezo-voltage of bone between two surfaces of a bone beam under bending deformation was measured using an ultra-high-input impedance bioamplifier. The influence of shear stress on the signs of piezo-voltages in bone was determined by comparing and contrasting the results from three-point and four-point bending experiments. From the three-point bending experiment, the study found that the signs of piezo-voltages depend only on shear stress and are not sensitive to the normal stress.
Variation of Streaming Potentials with Time under Steady Fluid Pressure in Bone

Abstract:This paper investigates the streaming potentials' behaviors when fluid flows through the micropores in bone. An experimental setup was developed for measuring the streaming potentials between two surfaces of a bone plate specimen. It was found that the streaming potentials measured increased almost linearly with time under a constant fluid pressure gradient, which does not agree with the prediction from the classical theory of streaming potentials. To explain the reasons associated with the results obtained, a theoretical model was proposed in which the electric charge densities on the inner surfaces of the capillary are unevenly distributed. A formula was developed for solving the model, and the solutions demonstrate that nonuniform accumulations of electric charges carried by the fluid on the inner surfaces of the microcanals in bone can induce streaming potentials which linearly increase with time during the driving air pressure holding period. This phenomenon represents the specific characteristics of bone. The solution implies that the streaming potentials in Haversian canals, lacunas and canaliculi are not affected by electro-viscous resistance in the bone fluid.

Abstract:The young^s elastic modulus of fresh human cortical bones changed significantly from 13.6 GPa to 18.3 for low and high strain rates. The osseous lamellae of haversion canal slid by each other under impact load and break along the cementing line. The time delay of SGPs vs. the strainw as about 440mus in fresh cortical bone, and no time delay in dry one. The peak value of-100mV in fresh bone specimens and 350mV in dry one before fail. Authors concluded that SGPs in fresh and dry cortical bones were generated by two different mechanisms of piezoelectric effect and streaming potential.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the mechanism of stress generated potentials in compressive fixation leading to the primary healing.METHODS:Eighteen fresh sheep tibiae were divided equally into three groups, and all specimen were fractured artificially and imposed "prestressing" at fracture sites with tension device and plate, meanwhile stainless wire tension band was used in the place opposite to plate. The interfragmental pressure was exerted when applied plates, which were 98.62 +/- 19.74 N, 137.93 +/- 8.13 N and 169.20 +/- 11.33 N. Bone potentials at fracture sites were recorded with reference to the potential measurement system by Friedenberg and Brighton (1966).RESULTS:There was no significant statistical difference in bone potentials when made comparison between before and after compression fixation in each group and among groups of different axial interfragmental gradient compressions.CONCLUSION:The mechanism of stress generated potentials may not exist in primary healing with compressive fixation.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to compare the stress of the bone around the mini-implant under the two kinds of force: the composite force which contains torque and traditional single force. There were 96 finite element models formed by the combination of mini-implant and bone, with diameters of 1.2 mm, 1.6 mm, 2.0 mm and corresponding length being 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, respectively. Each size corresponded to 8 models. Group SF (each size n=4) was loaded with 200 g single force, while Group CF (each size n=4) was loaded with composite force which contained 6N mm torque and 200 g single force. The maximum equivalent stress (Max EQS) of the bone surrounding mini implant with different loading directions was calculated, and the relationship of force direction, diameter and length was also evaluated. The Max EQS of Group CF was higher than that of Group SF. The effect of force direction on the stress was related to the diameter of mini implant, but had nothing to do with its length. The Max EQS of the cortical bone around mini implant in Group CF was higher (P<0.05) than that in Group SF. In contrast, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) between Group SF and Group CF in terms of bone stress when the diameter of mini implant was 1.6 mm or 2.0 mm. In our study, it is demonstrated that the diameter of mini-implant is better to be larger than 1.2 mm when a mini-implant is used in a torque control of tooth. The impact of this feature in the clinical setting needs to be verified.

Abstract:AIM:Based on researching the relationship of stress and streaming potential in bone tissues by numerical methods,biomechanical properties of bone can be understood.And physiological and pathological phenomenon can be explained.There is important significance on auxiliary physical rehabilitation techniques researching for treatment of bone fracture and related diseases.METHODS:Upon physiological structure of bone tissue,the porous media theory associated with electro-kinetics was used to model the electromechanical effects in bone tissue.The finite element governing equations were built up through Galerkin method and the penalty method.The distortion of skeleton,interstitial fluid flow and the streaming potential in bone tissue were numerically computed and simulated.Then the results will be compared with experiments.RESULTS:The relationship of streaming potential and frequency and magnitude of loading is gained.CONCLUSION:The magnitude of streaming potential is increasing with the loading frequency,and the slope is declining.The relations of the phase difference of streaming potential and load is just opposite with amplitude changing.The phase difference is declining with the loading frequency increasing.

Abstract:Piezoelectric effect produces an electrical signal when stress is applied to the bone. When the integrity of the bone is destroyed, the biopotential within the defect site is reduced and several physiological responses are initiated to facilitate healing. During the healing of the bone defect, the bioelectric potential returns to normal levels. Treatment of fractures that exceed innate regenerative capacity or exhibit delayed healing requires surgical intervention for bone reconstruction. For bone defects that cannot heal on their own, exogenous electric fields are used to assist in treatment. This paper reviews the effects of exogenous electrical stimulation on bone healing, including osteogenesis, angiogenesis, reduction in inflammation and effects on the peripheral nervous system. This paper also reviews novel electrical stimulation methods, such as small power supplies and nanogenerators, that have emerged in recent years. Finally, the challenges and future trends of using electrical stimulation therapy for accelerating bone healing are discussed.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine, Ahead of Print. Bone microstructure governs microcrack propagation complexity. Current research, relying on linear elastic fracture mechanics, inadequately considers authentic multi-level structures, like cement lines and osteons, impacting stress intensity at cracks. This study, by constructing models encompassing single or multiple osteons, delves into the influence of factors like crack length, osteon radius, and modulus ratio on the stress intensity factor at the crack tip. Employing a fracture mechanics phase-field approach to simulate crack propagation paths, it particularly explores the role of cement lines as weak interfaces in crack extension. The aim is to comprehensively and systematically elucidate the critical factors of bone microstructure in the context of crack propagation.

Abstract:Objective To study the effect of three different kinds of mechanical stimuli( i. e. strain energy density,equivalent stress and equivalent strain) on numerical simulation of bone remodeling. Methods A two-dimensional finite element model of the proximal femur was constructed. Based on the mechanostat theory and finite element method,the inner structure of the proximal femur and its density distributions under the three different stimuli were predicted. Then the simulation results were compared quantitatively with calculation results obtained from CT images. Results The predicted density distributions on the proximal femur under different stimuli were all well matched with the real structure of the proximal femur. By comparing the values and shapes of the calculated bone density curves,the predictions from the model using equivalent stress as mechanical stimuli were mostly consistent with the CT images. Conclusions The equivalent stress might play a leading role in mechano-regulation algorithms of bone remodeling. The accurate prediction of bone remodeling process will provide a theoretical basis for clinical practices such as orthopedic surgery,treatment of bone diseases and personalized design and optimization of prosthesis.
