Abstract:"Urban village" phenomenon appears to be problem in most cities' development of urbanization and industrialization. Acute changes of customs, behavior, and ideology have been shifting almost every aspects of the villagers' life. An investigation in both change and meditation of the "urban village" inhabitants in western region of Hangzhou shows that reason of acculturation. By exploiting the advantage of government, improving quality level of the inhabitants, fostering the transformation of participation and fulfilling the benefits of the inhabitants, the acculturation could be realized in economic, social and psychological aspects of "urban village" in Hangzhou.

Abstract:The paper summarizes the studies on urban village (chengzhongcun) in domestic and abroad from four perspectives including the concepts and definitions,the formation mechanism,the value orientations,and the renovation and reform strategies.Based on the summary,the paper states that a neutralized value orientation should be the logical starting point of analysis on urban village;the formation of urban village should be interpreted within the framework of "institution-action;" and the strategy of community management of urban village should be made from the angle of constructing city low-grade community and the restrictions of current institutions and various practical conditions.

Abstract:This paper reviews literatures on China's urban village in four aspects containing definition,developing mechanism,value judgment and renewal measures. It is argued that neutral attitude should be taken as the logic beginning of policy analysis;an conceptual framework of"Institution-Action"could be used to explain the shaping mechanism of urban village;and in order to formulating synthetically strategies of community governance,the view of livable urban low-quality community should be hold in planning process,and existing institution factors and its related constraints should be well assessed.

Abstract:In the increasingly warming wave of renovation and reconstruction in old cities,exploring models which can balance various contradictions is the chief problem in the redevelopment of old cities in China.However,there is no general model.Taking Hangzhou Quanye Li as an example,this article explores the methods and processes meeting with the Chinese current situation.Based on the site survey,the project analyzes the development mode,planning method,and architecture designing ideas of the construction and renovation in Quanye Li old residential area from the angles of sociology and typology.Finally,it suggests to exploiting apartments for the elderly and residential districts for both oldsters and youngsters,as well as continuing traditional settlement texture and keeping live traditional spatial sense in the planning and architecture design.

Abstract:Under the specific implementation requirements of "rural revitalization" and a number of national policies on the construction of beautiful villages, it is also a positive attempt and response to how to get rid of the most direct contradiction and subsequent development of Chinese villages. Pointed out that the development of the country should not be merely a return to traditional, need to seek a reasonable way to balance the development direction of the village, and get the correct position in the development of their own in the future, targeted to solve the dilemma facing the country, retain their own characteristics, in under sustainable development and the basic principles of people-oriented, To achieve the organic development of rural areas with micro-update design strategies and principles. This paper constructs a research framework from three directions: First, it studies the main current situation and contradictions of rural areas through a large number of field survey villages, summarizes the relatively successful practical cases of rural transformation at present, classifies and compares the basic situation and development situation of the surveyed villages, and summarizes the main development routes. Secondly, the composition and transformation of village texture under the disorder evolution and orderly intervention are studied through the composition micro-elements of villages from bottom to top. The reconstruction and continuation of the old building space under the guidance of micro-renewal is analyzed comprehensively from the symbols, language and constituent elements of the old building. It emphasizes the important influence of place spirit and special memory points on villagers' emotion and determines the protagonist status of villagers. Thirdly, through the evaluation and analysis of Nanhegang Village and the conceptual design scheme, it studies how the village carries on the spatial function transformation and the life continuation under the guidance of the micro-renewal strategy.

Abstract:Urban-village is a peculiar phenomena associated with acceleration of urbanization in China, in which there are villages surrounding the modem urban buildings caused by the dual land-use institution. It has been a serious problem which has to be solved for urban sustainable development. Renewal is one of the key solutions. Firstly in this paper, after reviewing the summary of the renewal of urban-village in some cities of China, factors related to main aspects influencing the renewal models are analyzed and the selected models for renewal are classified. Based on this, the paper presents an approach to selecting the proper models for the renewal. Policy implications are discussed at the end.

Abstract:This paper explores how to better develop a people-centered urban renewal project in the context of Shenzhens urban villages. In the beginning, this paper explains the background of the emergence of urban villages in Shenzhen and other major cities. Under this context, the participatory observation method is used to analyze the common problems in the renovation of urban villages in Shenzhen, and the housing affordability problem of the original residents for the newly constructed apartments is raised. Presenting the Nantou Ancient City in Shenzhen as positive empirical evidence, this paper explores two recommendations, starting with an emphasis on protective renovation to avoid a short-term boost in housing prices. Following discussion of urban renewal construction projects should not be limited to architectural space. Instead, inclusive community building is still the key to maintaining the former residents and attracting more young people. The condensed conclusion highlights the unity of these two viewpoints and reemphasizes the importance of people-centered development in urban villages.

Abstract:Rapid economic growth in China leads to a large influx of migrants in cities and a continuous urban expansion.In order to save financial and administrative cost, urban authority prefers to choose farmland for urban development rather than the urban villages.As a result, villages on urban-rural fringes have been gradually surrounded by urban landscape and become urban villages.As a new type of urban landscape, issues on urban village attract many scholars' interest.This paper gives a comprehensive literature review on urban village and explores the current research problems and shortages from the perspective of research theoretical basis, research topic and research methods.As a specific phenomenon along with China's rapid urbanization, a majority of study productions are made in China.Until recently, scholars overseas begin to give their interest on this topic.Research on urban village started since the end of 1980s from describing the concept, features and forming mechanism, to analyzing some deeper academic topics.This paper does the literature review from the national and international aspects.Research in national academe can be classified to three topics:understanding, forming mechanism and renewal.Scholars overseas hold different research visual angle on urban village.They usually focus on self-help housing, floating population and land use.Through the review of current literatures, there are several problems and shortages which need to be improved in further research.Firstly, a specific and strong theoretical system should be built to give an important research foundation.From the perspective of urban geography, using the research system of urban social geography is very necessary to coordinate the numerous topics and guide the research development along with a canonical path.Secondly, current research should be deepened with choosing more fresh and profound topics, such as exploring different factors' effects and their relationships in driving urban village's development, theoretical evaluation of urban village's objectivity, and urban village's roles in urban special structure.Thirdly, more mathematic methods which depend on great statistical and survey data should be used in further researches.

Abstract:With the accelerated pace of urban construction, urban area continues to expand and urban village problems are growing more heated. Scientific planning has a major significance to promote a healthy development of urban village transformation. This article describes the urban village problems exist in China from the following four aspects: the policy and management, handling in planning, environment planning, public and municipal service facilities. Abstract:In recent years, along with continuous urbanization, traditional villages in rapidly urbanizing areas have encountered difficulties like “constructive destruction,” “material decay,” imbalance of the natural environment, and loss of historical culture due to modernization. Under the requirement of “comprehensively strengthening the protection and utilization of historical and cultural heritage and coordinating the protection of historical and cultural heritage with urban and rural construction, economic development, and tourism development” in the new era, it is crucial to study the protection and development of historical and cultural heritage. Since traditional villages are a living heritage, their sustainable development while respecting history is indispensable. Coordinating the relationship between heritage conservation and socioeconomic development to achieve sustainable development is currently the biggest challenge for traditional village conservation. Taking Jiangbian village as an example, based on the cultural heritage value of the village, this paper combines the traditional village with the general direction of urban development and proposes strategies of cross-regional development, linkage, and integration of surrounding resources, complementing the shortcomings of public facilities, and utilizing unused resources, so that Jiangbian Village can be actively integrated into the development of the city, the synergistic development of the village and the city can be promoted, and the dynamic protection and utilization of traditional villages can be realized, with the goal of enriching the research on the dynamic protection and utilization of traditional villages in rapidly urbanizing areas.

Abstract:China, like many other developing countries, has seen a huge influx of population into its cities coupled with urban expansion. The presence of massive numbers of rural migrants in cities does not result in slums or squatters due to institutional constraints. In the absence of government help, urban villages have evolved in many cities to provide adequate and affordable housing for the rural migrants. However, the urban villages are rejected by policy-makers and face aggressive demolition–redevelopment programmes to replace them with formal urban neighbourhoods. This article explores different dimensions of the development and redevelopment of urban villages in Shenzhen. By linking to the development practice of the city, the physical and socio-economic evolution of urban villages is found to be a result of the natural and logical response of the indigenous village population and the rural migrants in facing rapid economic development and social transition. Therefore, the demolition-redevelopment approach adopted by the government would be devastating not only for the rural migrants but also for the city’s economy which is largely based on labour-intensive sectors. Opportunities to explore alternative responses such as upgrading or the provision of village level development guidance do exist and could be explored.

Abstract:Studies on urban villages' renewal and governance have attracted much interest in human geographical research field since the 1990s.However,there is little literature focusing on the developing evolution,pattern and dynamic mechanism of urban villages based on the theoretical system of urban spatial structure,and there are very few scholars doing comparison studies between urban village and general urban spatial form.In this paper,Shenzhen,the most representative city on urban villages' development in China,is taken as a case to explore the characteristics and modes of urban villages' development.With census data of urban villages' construction in 1999 and 2004,spatial and temporal characteristics of 91 original administrative urban villages in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone(Shenzhen SEZ) on land area construction floor area and construction intensity have been analyzed and compared with developing mode of general urban space.It is indicated that urban villages match with general urban developing rules in three aspects.(1) Land sprawl is the most remarkable mode in initial development of urban villages.(2) In urban villages' rapidly developing era thereis,distance-attenuation tendency in construction intensity obviously accompanying with some anomalous fluctuation at several urban sections.(3) Renewal and redevelopment methods are carried out gradually since urban villages come in their maturely developing period.However,because of historical and institutional restriction,urban villages perform uniquely in original spatial distribution,spatial expanding mode in developing era,developing rate of spatial form evolution,etc.The results not only contribute to theoretical extension on the mode of general urban spatial structure and further exploring on theoretical values of studies on urban villages,but also imply that governments should establish rational and objective rules to govern urban villages and advance their smart growth according to urban economic development and different housing demands concerning different income levels.Urban villages should be neither redeveloped in full accordance with the ways that general urban spatial form faces,nor ignored with their developing demands and trends as a type of urban spatial form.

Abstract:This research aims to examine the changing process in urban renewal policy in Shenzhen, a typical precursor of China’s land system, and explore its relationship with urban villages (informal spaces), which have been an important spatial feature of China’s rapid urbanization. The results show that there are three important phases of urban planning policy change. In the first phase, a period of nationalization and dualistic urban space formation led by the government. In the second phase, developers accelerated urban renewal in the form of ‘demolition and redevelopment.’ In the third phase, public housing was complemented by low-cost living space and the transformation of urban villages into a significant trend of ‘comprehensive renovation (zonghezhengzhi)’ with the retention of buildings and renovation. As demonstrated by recent policy changes, the preservation of the diversity of urban space is instructive for urban development.
