Abstract:This paper describes a software tool,called LEVSOFT,suitable for the electricfield simulations of corona electrodes by the Finite Element Method （FEM）.Special attentionwas paid to the user friendly construction of geometries with corners and sharp points,and tothe fast generation of highly refined triangular meshes and field maps.The execution of self-adaptive meshes was also implemented.These customized features make the code attractivefor the simulation of needle-type corona electrodes.Some case examples involving needle typeelectrodes are presented.

Abstract:Predicting the High Intensity Radiated Field (HIRF) coupling in complex system is highly required in the aeronautic industry, which can be performed by electromagnetic simulation. But the validation of electromagnetic simulation is a difficult issue which needs proper flowchart and validation methods. In this paper, the numerical simulation by the parallel Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method is validated on a simplify model of a metallic case with apertures under the HIRF environment. Concretely, the uncertainty quantification analysis on the input parameter of incident angles is carried out for the electric field in the center of the model with the method of nonintrusive polynomial chaos (NIPC). Based on this, the feature selective validation (FSV) is performed to quantify the comparison of the experimental data and the best simulation estimate. And the results obtained from the FSV method provide a high reliability for the numerical simulation.

Abstract:Since 750 kV transmission lines locate in the high altitude areas of northwest China where the environment condition is comparatively severe, the electromagnetic environmental problems in substations appear to be more prominent. As can be seen from the field observation results of the in-service substation, the frequent or permanent presence of corona discharge is obvious adjacent to the corona rings and end fitting hardware. This can result in distinct consequences of radio interference and audible noise, thus it may necessitate reasonable design of corona rings to improve the E-Field conditions. In this article, using a three-dimensional finite element method model, the E-Field distribution of circuit with value controlled reactors in the 750 kV substations is researched. According to both actual knowledge of phenomena and practical experiences form test facilities and lines in operation, a viable value of E-Field intensity is ascertained to control the electric field, and the configurations of some corona rings are optimized subsequently to diminish the corona discharge. And then an exhaustive suggestion about the design and arrangement of corona rings is proposed. The results could provide experiences and references for the design of 750 kV AC substation, and better technical performance and economic competitiveness is predicted to be implemented.
3D PIC-MCC Simulation of Corona Discharge in Needle-Plate Electrode with External Circuit

Abstract:This paper investigates the external circuit effect in corona discharge by means of numerical simulation, while the effect is usually disregarded in previous plasma simulations. A general numerical solution method of serial external circuit, which can compute surface charges on any shape of electrodes adaptively and solve electrode potential and circuit current simultaneously, is developed to support the investigation, due to lack of theoretical solution in irregular electrode systems. Brief description and validation of the scheme are presented in section 2. In general, the accuracy of numerical solution improves with mesh refinement in orthogonal mesh, due to stair step approximation. Simulations are performed in our self-developed 3D PIC-MCC (particle-in-cell, Monte Carlo collision) code with photoionization and external circuit. The simulation model including recently developed photoionization model is described briefly in section 3. Then the simulation results in a needle-plate electrode in air, such as spatiotemporal evolution of corona discharge and waveforms of electrode voltage and circuit current, are presented. Physical mechanisms of formation of branched corona discharge and self-consistent adjustment of electrode voltage and circuit current are discussed. The waveforms of voltage and current in this simulation are generally consistent with experimental result. The external circuit has negative feedback effect on the discharge, and can adjusts electrode voltage self-consistently. The application of external circuit improves the applicability of particle simulation method to the simulation of discharge phenomenon in actual devices.

Abstract:In this paper,a finite-element method(FEM)simulation program is developed to analyze the ionized field of bipolar bundled conductors.In the simulation,the subconductors in the conductor bundle are considered individually while the influence among the subconductors is taken into account.The initial value setting of the positive and negative space charge density near the surface of the subconductor is explained in detail.After the validity of the method is testified,the corona ionized field of±800kV HVDC line is analyzed.The corona current generated from the bundled conductors,the ground current density and the electric field distribution are calculated.The impacts of the number of bundles,the bundle spacing and the monopolar component on the corona current are investigated.It is found that,the corona current decreases with the increase in the number of bundles,and the corona current increases with the increase in the bundle spacing.If the monopolar component is not included, the corona current will be over-estimated.The simulation results show that the design of the±800kV HVDC line can satisfy the ground current density and electric field limits of environment control standards.
Electric Field Distribution and Optimization of a Bipolar UHVDC Voltage Generator

Abstract:The ultra high voltage(UHV)DC test base of the state grid corporation of China plays an important role in Chinese UHVDC transmission technology development.One of the tasks of this test base is to carry out research on the electromagnetic environment impact of UHVDC power transmission and provide technical support for the construction and operation of the UHVDC demonstration project.The 1 200 kV bipolar UHVDC voltage generator is the main source of the experimental lines in the test base,and its corona control is very important for the guarantee of the quality of electromagnetic environmental research.The corona level of the generator depends on its surface electric field.This paper presents a FEM simulation model for the generator and investigates the characteristics of the surface electric field intensity distribution of the generator.Based on the simulation analysis,some shielding measures are provided to optimize the electric field distribution. The results of the research are applied in the design and construction of the bipolar UHVDC generator.The operation result shows that the corona level of the generator is effectively controlled.

Abstract:This paper deals with monopolar corona discharge in wire-to-cage geometry. Electric field is solved using the finite element method (FEM), and the current continuity equation which upgrades the space charge density around the conductor is solved using the method of flux-tube. The ionization region and the related potential decrease which is usually neglected are considered as the Dirichlet condition in FEM method. Total corona current, electric field at the ground with the presence of space charge and current density at the ground under different applied voltage are calculated. The experimental data are executed in a small corona cage. The electric field and the current density near the ground are measured by compound electric field instrument and Wilson plate respectively. The numerical results are in agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:DC Corona cage is one of the most important test equipments to study the related electromagnetic environment problems of the ultra high voltage DC(UHVDC) transmission lines.In order to improve the analysis of DC corona cage which could contribute more in the construction of the UHVDC programs,it is necessary to simulate the space charge,electric field,and ion flow in the DC corona cage.On the basis of the Kaptzov's assumption,we combined the charge simulation method with the upstream finite element method and simulated the DC ion flow field of the DC corona cage.By the comparison of the calculated results and the experimental results in previous literatures,the validaty of the algorithm was verified.The calculated results of the typical monopolar and bipolar DC corona cages were given out.The simulation result showed that the space charge distributions in the monopolar and bipolar DC corona cages were different,and the equivalence of the tests of these two types of corona cages needed to be further studied.This algorithm runs fast,stably,and accurately,which has certain reference value in the analysis of the DC corona cage tests.

Abstract:Neutral beam injection heating is a very important auxiliary heating method in nuclear method in nuclear fusion. The high current ion source is one of the key components of neutral beam injector. ?ts performance determines the achievable goals of the NB?for the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). [Purpose] This study aims at the fundamental physical characteristics of radio frequency plasma discharge by simulating the discharge of radio frequency (RF) ion source. [Methods] The structure design and discharge characteristics of radio frequency ion source were simulated theoretically. Two‐dimensional inductively coupled plasma model was used to simulate the RF ion source. The relationship between turns of coil, turn space, size of driver, air pressure, RF power and the discharge characteristics was analyzed. [Results] The simulation results gave the optimal parameters of the RF ion source for EAST NB?that can meet the future needs of long pulse operation and the future demands of high energy ion source of NB?. [Conclusions] The simulation results lay a foundation for the development and experimental study of RF ion source.
Experimental Study on Corona Discharge Characteristics and Heat Transfer Enhancement Application at Atmospheric Pressure

Abstract:The mechanism of the electric field for heat transfer enhancement with needle-to-ring corona discharges is studied by experiment. Results show that discharge is easier to occur when negative voltage is applied and the electrical characteristics still obey Townsend's equation. The time-averaged velocity field results demonstrate that positive corona produces ionic wind more effectively than negative corona. In addition, it is found that ionic wind can dramatically enhance heat transfer. The enhancement effect of positive discharge is more significant than that of negative one.

Abstract:A vertical test system (VTS) for superconducting radio frequency cavities had been designed and constructed at Peking University. During the test, field emission electrons in the cavity will be accelerated and some of them will hit the flange of cavity with high-energy. These high-energy electrons will have a significant impact on the radiation safety of the system and environment. In this paper, the Particle-in-Cell solver in CST software was used to analyze the behavior of electrons emitted from different field emission positions and found the worst field emission site which deposited the most energy on the cavity wall. The impact information of the electrons emitted from the worst field emission site was utilized to character the source term. Prompt dose equivalent rate distribution and residual radioactivity was predicted by using the Monte Carlo simulation program FLUKA. Further vertical test results are consistent with the simulation results.

Abstract:In this paper, a numerical simulation is presented to study corona-type (non-thermal) leader observed previously in the point head rod-plane short gap. A 2D axisymmetric model of streamer discharge is established to simulate the positive streamer discharge in the rod-plane short gap at atmospheric pressure. The streamer discharge parameters such as movement of major charged particles, shape of the streamer and distribution of electric field are obtained. Then we set a plasma channel composed of positive and negative ions near the anode and find two sections in the current pulse, which is consistent with the previous experiment. The existence of corona-type (non-thermal) leader in the point head rod-plane short gap is conformed through the numerical simulation. It is widely accepted that residual charge can be ignored under power frequency voltage. However, the experiment result and simulation result illustrate the effect of residual charge on the subsequent discharge. And a theoretical demonstration is given that the residual charge from the previous discharge (a plasma channel) is the key to the formation of the “stem” structure. The research in this paper can not only expand the understanding of the corona discharge process, but also help to judge the intensity of corona discharge.
Corona-generated Space Charge Effects on Electric Field Distribution for an Indoor Corona Cage and a Monopolar Test Line

Abstract:The effects of corona-generated space charge on the resultant electric field near a conductor were determined both for a simulated test line and a corona cage, since both are used in predicting the corona behavior of EHV and UHV transmission lines. Programs were developed for the calculation of the potential, the electric field and the space charge distributions for a simulated test line and a corona cage. Algorithms based on the charge simulation and the finite-element methods were used to solve Poisson's equation; and the method of characteristics to solve the current continuity equation. The resultant electric field on the ground plane of the two configurations was measured with a rotating field-mill, and the results fitted well with the calculated data. It was found the electric field at the surface of the conductor increased linearly, for both experimental configurations, before the voltage reached the corona inception value; but was reduced once corona-generated space charge was produced. The space charge and density distribution in the corona cage differed greatly from that around the test line: the electric field at the surface of the conductor in the test line decreased faster with voltage than that in the corona cage, the relative difference increasing as V-app/V-on was raised. The difference reached an asymptote of about 16% when the applied voltage was about 25% above the corona inception level.

Abstract:A two-dimensional fluid model of a double hollow cathode discharge structure constrained by a magnetic mirror field is established. The discharge is ignited by a hot cathode arc, and the length of the discharge arc column fills the entire central region of the double hollow cathode structure under the action of the magnetic field, with the electrons self-sustainedly oscillating on the axis. The electron density within the hollow cathode tube does not increase all the time with the arc voltage, the enhancement of the wall ion current by the arc voltage is very obvious, and the hollow cathode discharge is a result of the mutual enhancement of the arc voltage and the hollow cathode voltage. Hollow cathode sputtering needs to reach a certain voltage threshold to ensure that the inner wall has sufficient ion energy and that there exists an optimal radius range to maintain the discharge chamber to achieve a high plasma density and to favor hollow cathode sputtering.

Abstract:Radiation near-fields of 10m height TEM antenna are computed by parallelized finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method. The effects of the source's excitation ways, terminator load, below plate's shape and the ground to the near-fields of that TEM antenna are discussed. And the regularity of simulation is agreed well with that of experiment. The simulation analysis shows that the simulation results of the TEM antenna with hard source are closer to the experimental results than those with soft source; the fields at the points near the antenna's end are affected by the terminator load greatly; the rise-time of some testing points increases as the rectangle below plate replaced by trapezoid one; the peak-value of testing points decreases and the rise-time increases as the ground around the below plate is considered.

Discrete and Continuous Models and Applied Computational Science

Abstract:Due to the emergence and active development of new areas of application of powerful and super-powerful microwave vacuum devices, interest in studying the behavior of ensembles of charged particles moving in the interaction space has increased. An example is an electron beam formed in a coaxial diode with magnetic isolation. Numerical simulation of emission in such a diode is traditionally carried out using particle-in-cell methods. They are based on the simultaneous calculation of the equations of motion of particles and the Maxwell’s equations for the electromagnetic field. In the present work, a new computational approach called the point macroparticle method is proposed. In it, the motion of particles is described by the equations of relativistic mechanics, and explicit expressions are written out for fields in a quasi-static approximation. Calculations of the formation of a relativistic electron beam in a coaxial diode with magnetic isolation are performed and a comparison is made with the known theoretical relations for the electron velocity in the beam and for the beam current. Excellent agreement of calculation results with theoretical formulas is obtained.

Abstract:A 3D electromagnetic field algorithm and the stability condition of the electromagnetic were analyzed based on the 3D Yee grid model and the leapfrog model. The average-weighting and charge-conserving ways to realize the interaction between electromagnetic and particles were discussed. At the same time the perfect conductor boundary condition, the free space absorbing boundary and explosive emission model were discussed. Finally, inward-emitting coaxial diode was used as an example to validate the simulation of current-voltage correlation and characteristics of electron beam movement.

Abstract:A simulation program of electronic optical system of field emission display(FED) is designed in this paper,the design is modeled by computer simulation software called EBS.The simulations of electric field distribution,electric field strength,electron beam trajectory and anode beam spot size are realized,and the simulation results are displayed in an intuitive way.Through the simulation experiments,students can deeply understand the structure and working principle of FED,as well as field emission phenomenon.The simulation model can also be used for other field emission devices.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to simulate the arc movement in the quenching chamber of the low-voltage circuit breaker. Based on a group of governing equations, a three-dimensional (3-D) are model is built and solved by a modified commercial code. According to the simulated results, some phenomena such as a 'bulge' in front of the arc column, a tail in the rear of the arc column, arc shrinkage near the electrodes and arc movement characteristics versus different chamber configuration and external magnetic field are found, and the mechanism of the above phenomena is described in detail. Finally, in order to verify the simulation results, arc movement is investigated by hi-spec motion analyzer experimentally.
