Abstract:The second-order nonlinear polarizabilities α(2) of molecules are often determined by the dc field-induced second harmonic generation method for the fluid phase and by the powder method for the solid phase. Both methods rely on some statistical analyses assuming knowledge of some material parameters. Here we introduce a new method that allows us to measure α(2) of some organic molecules more directly. It is based on the possibilities that an orientationally ordered monolayer of these molecules can be spread on a liquid surface, and second harmonic generation (SHG) from such a monolayer can be observed. The technique has the advantage of a low background level, an easily controllable surface density of molecules, and a relatively high sensitivity.

Abstract:Hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) technique, an incoherent methodology, is an effective tool developed at the beginning of the nineties for the determination of the first-order hyperpolarizability beta value of molecular chromophores in solution or gas. Compared with conventional coherent second harmonic generation (SHG) or with electric-field-induced SHG technique, HRS technique is not constrained by the orientational, size, and/or charge restrictions, hence, in the past years, it has been used to measure the beta value of nanoscale particles and some important results were obtained. In this paper, its simple principle, experimental setup, and data processing method are described. According to the recent studies, reported and our work, some possible HRS mechanisms, such as surface contribution, bulk-like contribution, aggregate contribution, resonance enhancement, surface static electric field, and solvent filed, are explored. Especially, surface contribution is emphasized. The investigation of second-order nonlinear optical properties of nanoparticles with the HRS technique is an interdisciplinary field of nano-science and nonlinear optics, which is attracting more and more attentions of scientists.

Abstract:We studied the nonlinear optical properties of a square split-ring structure of magnetic meta-materials and the mechanism by which a non-centrosymmetric silver structure generates the second harmonic within the near-infrared band. We also analyzed the effect of the silver structure on the second harmonic and applied the silver structure in an air cavity-silver-glass structure, which is an insulator-metal-insulator structure, for sensing. By identifying the effect of different refractive indexes on the transmission spectrum, we obtained the intrinsic relation between the refractive index and the wavelength at which the second harmonic is excited. The experimental results indicate that with the growth of the refractive index, the second harmonic has an evident red shift and that by changing the shape and split width of the silver structure, the sensitivity is significantly improved, measurement of amino acid solutions up to 1007.2 nm/RIU. This study brings new insight into the application of second harmonics with nonlinear effects in the sensing field.

Abstract:A single molecular layer is generally sufficient to produce observable optical second harmonic generation (SHG). Furthermore, the selection rules governing this process make the SHG from a single monolayer often stronger than that from the medium supporting the monolayer. We have studied SHG from various Langmuir-type monolayers (i.e. monolayers spread on a water surface) in the following contexts: (1) Study of chemical reactions (e.g. polymerization) and two-dimensional phase transitions in molecular monolayers on water. (2) Development of a new technique to evaluate optical nonlinear coefficients of organic molecules, and their relationship to the molecular structure.

Abstract:In order to know how we can design effective NLO materials, we have studied several series of aromatic hydrocarbons used as NLO materials and found criteria as follows: (1) When the conjugated system is small then the nitro-group is an effective acceptor, and some of this kind of compound has a very high SHG response while fairly big conjugated compounds whose acceptor is nitro-group often reveal weak or no nonlinearity. (2) The compounds whose acceptor (-NO2) and donor (-NH2, -NHR or -NR2) are para-substituted on both ends of the conjugated chains always have very weak or SHG (second harmonic generation). (3) The substituted groups such as -CH3, -OCH3, -X(-Cl, -Br, -1) and biphenyl (C6H5C6H4-) are the best donors which are beneficial to SHG response and transparency. (4) The relatively big conjugated compounds often reveal fairly good second-order nonlinearity when greater than C equals O acts as their acceptor. We studied these laws theoretically and experimentally so as to give some useful guides to the research of the SHG materials.

Abstract:The third-order nonlinearity of five stable organic radical species with nitronyl nitroxide group was investigated using a femtosecond optical Kerr gate method. The magnitudes of their second hyperpolarizability were measured at around 10(-34)-10(-32) esu. The influence of the subtle chemical change of the molecular structure was explored. The experimental results were compared with theoretical calculation.

Abstract:A photo-crosslinked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone, p-nitroaniline as the chromophore and cinnamyl group as the photo-sensitizer. The characterization of the polymer was made by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-vis, and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. An electro-optic film was obtained by spin coating of the polymer and corona poling then photo-crosslinking reaction. An external electro-optic measurement system was established based on the film and reflective light path configuration, and successfully applied to measure the electrical signals propagating on the under-test circuits. The poled and crosslinked film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. The measuring principle was analyzed by electro-optic tensor matrix and index ellipsoid methods. The results showed that the designed polymer film had the linear electro-optic effect, the voltage sensitivity of the system was measured to be 5 mv/ at the condition of 1 kHz input signal. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Mapping Molecular Orientation and Conformation at Interfaces by Surface Nonlinear Optics

Abstract:Second-order nonlinear optics can be used to quantitatively determine the orientation of chemical bonds or submoieties of a fairly complicated molecule at an interface, and therefore completely map out its orientation and conformation. As a specific example, we have studied pentyl-cyanoterphenyl molecules at the air-water interface. We have measured the orientation of all three parts of the molecule (cyano head group, terphenyl ring, and pentyl chain) by optical second-harmonic generation and infrared-visible sum-frequency generation. A quantitatively consistent picture of the molecular configuration has been obtained. The technique can be applied to situations where other methods would fail (e.g., the surface of neat liquids or buried interfaces). [S0163-1829(99)04119-3].

Abstract:We have measured the second-order hyperpolarizability gamma for C-70 and its poly-aminonitrile derivative by using the femtosecond optical Kerr effect at 810 nm. The result showed that C-70 exhibited a low optical nonlinearity. For the derivative C-70-poly-aminonitrile a magnitude as high as 1.6 x 10(-32) esu was measured for the second-order hyperpolarizability. The origin of this extreme enhancement of the nonlinearity of fullerene was assigned to the formation of a charge-transfer complex. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Molecular Monolayers of Charge-Transfer Complexes: Protonation and Aggregation Studied by Second Harmonic Generation

Abstract:Second-order optical nonlinearities of molecules can be strongly affected by the environment. Protonation and aggregation of the dyes 4-amino-4′-nitrostilbene (NS) and hemicyanine (HC), are investigated by second harmonic generation from molecular monolayers floating on water. The observed second-order nonlinearity of such molecules in the form of either a pure monolayer or a monolayer diluted with stearic acid directly reflects the degree of protonation of the molecules. For NS and HC, the variation of the second-order molecular polarizability with protonation is opposite. It is demonstrated that the measured nonlinearity can be used to deduce the effective proton concentration in the surface region. The proton concentration close to a stearic acid monolayer floating on water, for example, is found to be ∼7 orders of magnitude larger than the bulk proton concentration when the latter is low. The effects of stearic acid in diluting a dye molecular monolayer on changing the environment and breaking dye aggregates are discussed.
Determination of Orientation of Amphiphilic Molecules at the Air-Water Interface by Nonlinear Optics

Abstract:Molecular monolayer at the air-water interface was investigated using second-order nonlinear optical processes (surface sum-frequency generation and second-harmonic generation). Laser outputs at different frequencies could selectively excite and probe the desired part of the chemical bonds or sub-moieties of a model molecule, penlylcyanoterphenyl. By using different polarization combinations of input and output beams in the measurement, all the independent nonlinear optical susceptibilities of each part could be deduced. It was determined the orientation of cyano group and terphenyl ring was about 50 degrees from the surface normal, and that of the terminal CK group was 58 degrees, with the pentyl chains in the layer mostly straight conformation. Thus a quantitative and self-consistent picture of the molecular conformation at the interface was obtained.

Abstract:We have measured the real components of the third-order optical nonlinearity of organometallic compound films of C60M2 (M=Pd, Pt, and Sm) by using the femtosecond optically heterodyned optical Kerr effect at 647.0 nm. The results show that there is an enhancement of the real components of the third-order optical nonlinearity of C60M2 films compared to that of pristine C60 film. We attribute the origin of this enhancement to the charge transfer from the metal atoms to the C60 molecules.

Abstract:The second-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities in five organic crystals are studied based on the EHMO bandstructure method. The crystals studied included m-aminophenol, urea, m-dinitrobenzene, POM [3-methyl-4-nitropyridine-1-oxide] and m-nitroaniline. The beta(cell) tensor components for a unit cell of crystals are calculated by the sum-over-states method. Results are presented for the density of states and second-order nonlinear optical coefficients d((2))(0), which are compared with other existing calculations and experimental data. The overall agreement of our calculations with available data is quite satisfactory. Moreover, the effect of the interactions between neighboring unit cells on the hyperpolarizability tensor components of beta(cell) is examined and analyzed. The results show that the procedure developed in this work provides a new insight into the second-order susceptibilities of organic molecular crystals, which is important in molecular engineering. Abstract:Second-order nonlinear optical techniques have been demonstrated to be highly surface specific. The adsorption of monolayers at various interfaces, e.g., metal/vacuum, glass/water or water/air, etc., can be probed with a submonolayer sensitivity. Detailed molecular information, such as the mean orientational distribution of the surface molecules, the surface concentration of adsorbates, the nonlinearity of adsorbates, and so on, can be deduced from the measurements.

Here we describe two examples to illustrate the potential of the techniques. One is on the formation of metal/polymer interfaces. Abstract:An improved method to calculate the macroscopic second-order susceptibility of organic crystals is presented. The wave functions are obtained by the ZINDO single excited configuration interaction (ZINDO-MECI) method. The βcell tensor components for a unit cell of a crystal are calculated by the sum-over-states (SOS) method underlying the idea of “supramolecule” included the intermolecular interaction. Six organic compounds, urea, m-dinitrobenzene, 3-methyl-4-nitropyridine-1-oxide (POM), nitro-4-pyridino-2-(l)-prolinol (PNP), (N)-(4-nitrophenyl)-(l)-prolinol (NPP) and m-aminophenol have experimental macroscopic NLO coefficients, which are used as a check. A reasonable agreement is obtained between calculated nonlinear optical coefficients and experimental values. The reliability of the method is discussed in terms of the UV spectra of the compounds. The results show that the procedure developed in this article provides a new insight into the second-order susceptibilities of organic molecular crystals, which is important in molecular engineering.

Abstract:A femtosecond optical Kerr effect experiment has been used to study the dynamic process of third-order optical nonlinearity for organic solvents acetone, acetonitrile, alcohol, benzene, chloroform, dichlomathane, dimenthyl-sulfoxande, dioxane, ethanol, and methanol, etc. The nonlinear refractive index for the solvents at femtosecond time scale was measured.

Abstract:The non-linear optical properties of a novel molecule, CNDA (α′-cyano-4′-nitrobenzal-4-N,N-dimethylaniline), were compared with that of NDA (4′-nitrobenzal-4-N,N-dimethylaniline). Guest-host type polymer films were fabricated using PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) as matrix. Optimum corona poling temperatures of the polymer films were found to be lower than glass transition temperatures of the materials with in situ second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurement. The molecular hyperpolarizability β of the CNDA was estimated to be about 146×10−30 esu from the measured absorbance and χ(2). The ordered CNDA also showed better stability in PMMA matrix than NDA.
