Abstract:Nature, diversity, and openness are what we demand from urban green space in the 21st century. Based on the summary of urban green space connotation, types and significance, this paper reviewed the research hotspots of urban green space, i.e., conservation and planning of urban-rural fringe, restoration and preservation of natural areas and indigenous vegetation, ecological restoration and planning of green way, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem structure and services, and management policy. The difference between foreign and domestic urban green space researches and practices were summarized, and some preferential urban green space research aspects in the future were proposed. It was suggested that in China, urban green space strategy should be integrated into urban planning and land use planning.

Abstract:Urban forests are crucial components of the urban ecosystem, playing a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance, mitigating the urban heat island effect, and enhancing air quality, etc.. Research into urban forest ecosystem services and multifunctionality is of significant importance for effectively managing and optimizing urban ecosystems, thus contributing to sustainable urban development. This work systematically examined various ecosystem services provided by urban forests, encompassing regulatory, supportive, provisioning, cultural, and health-promoting services. It provided a comprehensive review of research progress and paradigms regarding the multifunctionality of urban forest ecosystems, anticipates future research directions, and underscored the necessity of enhancing attention to the three-dimensional morphology of urban forests in regulating their ecological functions. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of quantitatively analyzing urban forests' contribution to ecosystem multifunctionality and optimizing urban forest patterns through multi-objective synergistic techniques. Furthermore, this study elucidated the cascading effects and mechanisms of urban forest pattern-process-function-service relationships, proposing strategies for multi-objective coordinated development of urban forest patterns and offering scientific support and practical guidance for the efficient, stable, and sustainable management of urban forests.

Analysis on the Eco-health Function of Five Typical Urban Green Species in Beijing

Abstract:Having made considerable progress in recent years, the urban forestry construction is gradually transforming its concerns from focusing on function and aesthetics to eco-health function. Due to the lack of researches on the eco-health function of most-used plants species, in this study, five typical urban green species (Populus tomentosa, Salix matsudana, Pinus tabulaeformis, Platycladus orientalis, Poa Annua and arbor-shrub-grass green space) in three representative urban green spaces were monitored for the concentration of air anion, the air temperature and relative humidity, the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2), and the noise level at different locations of green spaces in different seasons. Some conclusions can be seen from the results: (1) compared to the five single-specie arbor groves, arbor-shrub-grass green space had bettereco-health function. Using the concentration of CO2 as an example, the highest concentration of air anion was found in a arbor -shrub-grass green space(435 × 10-6 ). (2) Deciduous trees had better eco-health function in foliaceous period, while showed poor eco-health function in foliage-falling period. Using the concentration of air anion as an example, the highest number was found in deciduous tree groves(Salix matsudana) 1500 cm-3 . (3) In terms of maintaining the eco-health function, evergreen conifer groves, represented by oriental arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis), showed a more steady result. The difference of the air anion concentrations was 154 cm-3 , which was half of the difference of deciduous specie (Poplus tomentosa). Urban green space eco-health theory was supported by this research data and this research can provide the basis for urban green space design to enhance the eco-health function.

Abstract:As a key component of urban ecosystem,urban forests are of important ecological and social functions,while urban forests health is the prerequisite of ensuring the fulfillment of these functions and thus can directly affect the sustainable development of human society. Urban forests health is a comprehensive concept,which requires not only satisfying its own ecosystem health,but also meeting various demands of human society in economic,cultural and other terms. However,there are a number of factors that can influence urban forest health,while the main factors include the particularity of urban environment and human activities. In addition,the monitoring evaluation index screening and the evaluation methods selection for urban forest health in China are still at an infancy stage,which have not yet formed a mature system. The structural fragment of urban forest as well as the other features has seriously influenced the self-healing capacity of urban forests. In order to ensure the healthy growth of urban forests,many scholars researched on the maintenance measures from the macro and individual dimensions. The paper gave some recommendations in view of the shortcomings spotted in the research on urban forests health,on the basis of summarizing the previous research achievements.

The studies of ecosystem service of urban green space in overseas were focused on improving the quality of urban environment, maintaining biodiversity, providing amenity values, and ecosystem management; while in China, they were focused on the structure and function of urban green space, green quantity and quality, green equivalent, indicator system evaluation, value assessment, and application of CITYgreen model. The shortages and prospects of the researches on ecosystem service of urban green space were put forward.
Current Status of Evaluations on Ecological Benefits of Urban Forest:Surveying on Urban Forestry Administrative Authorities

Abstract:Scientific evaluation on ecological benefit of urban forest is the foundation of effective management of urban forest.This paper chooses urban forest management agencies as respondents,and uses the method of mailed-in questionnaires.The investigation includes urban forest coverage rate,most-concerned indexes of ecological benefits of urban forest,and progress of ecological benefits evaluation.Feedbacks from 95 cities are analyzed together with other collected statistical data to identify main factors that affecting the implementation of evaluation.The results show that evaluations on ecological benefits of urban forest in China are still at a beginning stage.The indexes including good climatic and geographical conditions,abundant natural tourism resources,and government participation in the election of environmental rewards have significant influences on the evaluation.While the socio-economic condition has less effects.Meanwhile,there is a high consistency on the concern of ecological benefits of urban forest between urban forestry administrative authorities and researchers.Recommendations are given to deal with the identified problems,and to improve the assessment of ecological benefits of urban forest.

Abstract:Research on special categorized plants garden is one of the new realms in the study of city landscape architecture.This paper takes Wuxi special categorized plants garden as a research object and makes a feasibility analysis for functional promotion and derivation.Besides the ecological function which is known to all,the social function and economic function of special categorized plants garden are analyzed in this paper.Functional derivation includes ecological culture propagation,city brand building and recreation activity enrichment.Functional promotion lies on the facets of space planning,operating management,and tourism development and so on.This research discusses the construction of special categorized plants garden on the height of city level,in order to promote the city competitiveness.

Abstract:Soil quality of urban green space (UGS) is the basis for ensuring healthy growth of plants and maintaining the healthy ecosystem services for the residents and the sustainable development of city. At present, in order to improve the soil quality of UGS, more attention has been paid to fertility quality and environmental quality, but less to the health quality. We analyzed the concept, connotation, and assessment indicator of soil health quality, summarized the main problems and challenges of soil health quality of UGS. Finally, we put forward the ways and strategies to improve soil health quality of UGS, and prospected future research direction. Our aim was to attract the attention to the soil quality of UGS, especially soil health quality, and the importance of comprehensively improving soil quality of UGS, eventually providing strong technical support for urban sustainable development and eco-city construction.

Abstract:Urban forest is a very important part of urban ecosystems and provides significant ecosystem services. It benefits urban communities environmentally, aesthetically, recreationally and economically. This article reviews the development status, development patterns and influencing factors of urban forest in China. There are four typical development patterns of urban forest in China: the forest city, garden city, ecological economics and forest greenbelt. Social, climatic, economic and other factors influence urban forest development in China. Social factors include government behaviour, laws and regulations, science and technology, education and culture, public awareness and participation, ecological planning and management. Climatic factors include rainfall, temperature and sunlight. Economic factors include urban economic level and funding for urban forest. In future, government, NGOs and the private sector should be considered more in the planning and management of urban forest. The social, climatic and economic factors should be taken into account when improving urban forest management. Research on urban forest from the academic and the management viewpoint should be strengthened. This can improve the development and management of urban forest in China and in other developing countries.

Abstract:Urban parks, as an important component of urban green spaces, play a crucial role in improving the urban environment and enhancing residents' quality of life. This review summarizes the main content and research progress of urban park microclimate studies through analysis and synthesis of relevant literature from academic databases such as Web of Science and Google Scholar. Using Citespace or VOSviewer for bibliometric analysis, we found that the number of academic papers on the urban park microclimate has been growing year by year. The research content primarily covers the monitoring and analysis of temperature, humidity, wind speed, and other indicators in urban parks, as well as the impact of park design and planning on the microclimate. Keyword analysis revealed that researchers have mainly focused on the cooling effects of the urban park microclimate, mitigation of the urban heat island effect, and improvement of air quality. In terms of research methods, a combination of field observations and simulation models is commonly employed, with data being analyzed and validated using mathematical and statistical methods. The research results indicate that well-designed and planned parks can significantly improve the microclimate environment, reduce temperatures, and provide comfortable climatic conditions in urban areas. Additionally, vegetation arrangements and water features in urban parks also contribute to microclimate regulation. Moreover, windbreak measures and cooling strategies in parks can help alleviate the urban heat island effect, enhance air quality, and promote the health of ecosystems. However, this review also identified some issues in urban park microclimate research, including limitations in research scope, methods, and practical applicability. Future studies could deepen the comprehensive understanding of the urban park microclimate and explore more effective strategies for park design and planning to optimize and enhance the microclimate environment. It is also important for researchers to continuously innovate in terms of research methods and verify the feasibility of practical applications to better address the challenges of urban development.

Abstract:As urban problems and the COVID-19 pandemic worsen, public health issues are taken seriously. As an important part of building environment, urban green space has been concerned about its health. The paper of 2035 in Web of Science Core database is taken as the research object, and CiteSpace visualization software is used for research and analysis to clarify the status quo of urban green space and health (UGSH) field. The research shows that the research object has gradually expanded from a single green space to cities, countries and the world. The research focuses on the relationship between people and green space, and discusses the comprehensive benefits of green space. Research methods from early investigation and evaluation, simulation experiment to qualitative and quantitative cross analysis, formed a relatively perfect subjective and objective research paradigm. In addition, the research content mainly focuses on the urban ecosystem, mental health and physical health. In a review of the existing research, the urban green space to promote public health, the improvement of human welfare puts forward three Suggestions: 1) in the urban planning, the city as a comprehensive social ecosystem, the urban green space planning and design should pay attention to provide ecosystem services and create a social network, in order to improve the social and environmental justice; 2) Urban planning should consider residents' preferences for different green Spaces to create a more pleasant living environment; 3) Improve the coverage of urban green infrastructure and expand the ecological network.

Abstract:Urban green space is urban green infrastructure and the important urban life support system. It has important ecological and socio-economic functions. It also becomes the important standard on evaluating urban ecological sustainability and life quality. In this paper, the ecological, economic and social functions of urban green space were systematically summarized, a number of issues to be settled urgently are proposed. For example, how do the urban green spaces influence the urban development form? How will a green space ecological network be developed for the people and for the conservation of biodiversity? How will the ecological, social-economic values of green spaces be measured? How can results of these values of green spaces be incorporated into the comprehensive urban green planning? Finally, the development trend of urban green space conservation, management as well as planning in the future are pointed out, as well. A comprehensive urban green space framework is also proposed which could contribute to management and planning of urban green space future development in the Chinese cities.

Abstract:As human society being rapidly urbanized, the future of most landscapes is increasingly being determined by human activities. These activities modify existing landscape patterns and processes either deliberately or inadvertently. It is becoming increasingly apparent that an understanding of these landscape level patterns and processes is essential for rational land use planning and management as well as for production and biodiversity conservation.This paper aims at introducing the progress in research on ecological impact of urban landscape structure through the best available and current literatures, foreign and domestic. According to those studies, ecosystems are impacted by the urban landscape in two aspects: landscape pattern and landuse/landcover. Based on the overview of recent studies, it can be argued that, to get a high-quality urban life and to improve natural environments, the distributions of landscape pattern are required to be integrated with its functions.

Abstract:As human living environments face increasing challenges with resilience, the concept of nature-based solutions (NBS) was proposed in recent years as a way to promote sustainable living in urban environments. Urban forests and trees play important roles in urban ecosystems, while their potential as an NBS is promising. A bibliometric analysis was first conducted to explore the research pattern of NBS in urban environments. Studies of urban forest and tree-based green infrastructure in NBS research were further investigated using a systematic literature review method. The initial studies on NBS have increased since 2015 with 493 documents published from 142 sources in over 70 countries and regions. Keyword analysis showed green infrastructure had a rather high frequency of utility and received considerable attention. As for urban forests as nature-based solutions (UF-NBS) research, the most prominent study approaches used at different scales and the main benefits and typologies of urban forest studied in the articles were identified. UF-NBS research is still relatively scarce at present. Despite the role of urban forest and trees in addressing environmental challenges being well recognized, UF-NBS studies still need to be conducted in a more comprehensive context, taking social and economic aspects into account.

Abstract:An overview of research progress of urbanization impacts on plant biodiversity was given. With a worldwide expanding of urbanization,especially in developing countries,effects of urbanization on biodiver-sity are attracting more attention. Urbanization reduces native plant species whilst increases introduced plant species. As for distribution of plant species,richness of native plant decreases along rural,rural-urban fringe and urban gradient. However,richness of introduced plant species increases,which results in increasing of total plant species richness along the same gradient. Urbanization also produces the great influence on plant species composition and makes the dominant species varying along the gradient. The mechanism of urbani-zation affecting plant biodiversity mainly lies on three aspects,i.e.,introduction of exotic species,change of microhabitat,and altering of landscape pattern. Concerning further researches,four main trends will become more and more important: (1) systematical integration of different regions,various methods and multi-disciplines,(2) long-term site monitoring the urban expanding and plant biodiversity changing,(3) re-search on interior mechanism of native plant species’ loss and characteristics’ change,especially the in-ter-actions between the exotic and native plant species,and (4) urban plant biodiversity conservation.
