Abstract:According with urban economy's rapid development,there is a common characteristic appearing in many China cities which is speed of urbanization in these cities is growing faster and faster.Then,a number of historical culture cities are rethinking a question what is how to making their conservation more effective in progress of modernization in China.This article takes Hangzhou as an example,first,compares two different conservation methods between Hangzhou and Suzhou;then,finds reasons why Hangzhou cannot conserve its historical cultural resources effectively by using the old city rebuilding conservation method;after that,analyses relationship between economic development and urban space structure;finally,deduces conclusion that conservation of a old city must depends on developing of a new city.With contribution of leisure economy development,the historical cultural city-Hangzhou could achieve a wonderful consequence that is the old city feeds on itself.

The article introduces the strategies such as the land lease system, public private partnership, differentiated housing and high density development in the Eastern Docklands, and also analyzes multiple balances in land, economy, society and culture, with the aim of inspiring the urban regeneration in China.

Abstract:In the increasingly warming wave of renovation and reconstruction in old cities,exploring models which can balance various contradictions is the chief problem in the redevelopment of old cities in China.However,there is no general model.Taking Hangzhou Quanye Li as an example,this article explores the methods and processes meeting with the Chinese current situation.Based on the site survey,the project analyzes the development mode,planning method,and architecture designing ideas of the construction and renovation in Quanye Li old residential area from the angles of sociology and typology.Finally,it suggests to exploiting apartments for the elderly and residential districts for both oldsters and youngsters,as well as continuing traditional settlement texture and keeping live traditional spatial sense in the planning and architecture design.

Abstract:The development and utilization of low-slope hilly land needs to be quite cautious based on former research on low-slope hilly land suitability assessment.aiming at the characteristic that the ecological structure of insular is simple and fragile,as the main land resource of insular.The method of developing and utilizing insular low-slope hilly land was explored,taking Zhoushan Archipelago New Area in Zhejiang Province as a case.The principal component analysis (PCA),analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and geographic information system were used to carry on the statistics and space by way of combining qualitative and quantitative analysis.The quantity of the land resource was analyzed from macro perspective.The three stations-suitability analysis of ecology,state,form were proposed to pay more attention to the city's development and its spatial form.The situation of water-soil safety was analyzed from micro perspective.The sloping land,soil and hydrology of the planning management unit were researched and analyzed.Results show that developing insular low-slope hilly land requires the consideration of both macro and micro analysis.The land suitability of insular low-slope hilly was achieved.The method shows full respect to the particularity of insular low-slope hilly land.The planning management guidance is made from macro and micro perspective corresponding to the distribution of the land suitability,so that it's precise,ecological and secure to develop and utilize the insular low-slope hilly land.

Abstract:Hong Kong's public housing which began in 1950s has provided housing for over 3 million residents, and it is considered one of the best public housing in the world. Hong Kong has huge population but little land supply, and has always been facing high housing demand. In order to solve the problem, Hong Kong's public housing takes measures in the scale of city, site and building. We discuss the impact of urban planning for the external space of public housing in Hong Kong, comb the features and combinations of public housing in building scale, outline the special characteristic of the whole site of public housing, and provide some views in Hong Kong about affordable housing design in China based on the study of public housing.

Abstract:Urban waterfronts are fascinating places,exhibiting both natural charm,usefulness for a vast array of human activities,as well as a rich heritage that generated significant tourist interest in some areas.On review of the waterfront development studies and urban development research both home and abroad,this article argues that a strong trend of urban waterfront development is recreation oriented,rather than business centered.This trend is in accordance with the humanist thinking among development paradigms.Thus,the authors of this study proposed the idea of urban waterfront recreational business district(RBD).Thirteen sites across the world were examined with field trip by at least one of the authors.The researchers summarized six issues that apply to the domestic waterfront RBD planning and development,which shares some commonality with China.

Abstract:The author briefly introduces the basic situation of sustainable social housing in Holland and the correlative concept of "passive house" in Europe as well as a project of renewal of social housing named Luosen Daer in Holland. In this project, the concept and technology of" passive house" have been applied to the renewal and alteration of existing housing. Abstract:Suburban residential development is one of the most prevailing urban phenomena in Chinese cities, where it occurs in a very different context from the West. However, research has seldom assessed suburban residential development in blocks, especially based on parcel-level land use data and site-specific land leasing data. This paper attempted to address this critical gap through analyzing residential land development of a case city, Hangzhou, in the era of land market reform since 2000. The major spatial determinants of development were identified through Logit models on the scales of timing, density, and intensity. The results indicated that Hangzhou has formed a fragmented and dispersed pattern in the suburbs, characterized by large-scale development and a relatively low floor area ratio. It was found that travel time to the central business district, distance to urban arteries, distance to schools and colleges, distance to the Qiantang River, percentage of industrial land and residential land, and surrounding land transactions impacted suburban residential development. These variables had different impacts on the timing, density, and intensity of suburban residential development. In particular, residential development was encouraged in suburbs despite the lack of adequate public facilities. The results call for policy and planning that can better manage suburban residential development in Hangzhou. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Environmental impacts from construction waste have been increasingly becoming a major issue in urban management, particularly in the densely populated regions, such as Hong Kong. This paper presents the current practices of using low waste technologies (LWT) for design and construction in terms of their implementation level and barriers in application on site. Through two practical cases and the semi-structured interviews, the research presents discussions on of the major low waste technologies that have been adopted and the implementation extent of these LWTs in both design and construction stages. The study provides recommendations for improving the use of LWT, including the corresponding technology instruments and the government may develop and implement. The research result can help understand the current situation in applying LWT in design and construction and the findings are expected to assist the decision makers to formulate a set of design and technology toolkit for improving construction waste management.
The Spatial Consistency between Compact City and Mixed Land Use Development：A Case Study of Shanghai

Abstract:This paper aims to present space development characteristics of Shanghai about urban compactness and mixed land use degree, and to further explore the spatial consistency. ArcGIS technology and analytic hierarchy process(AHP) are employed. The results show that: 1)Compactness of Shanghai is not high as a whole, which shapes as ‘palmate’ distribution with city center as the core and suburban new town as the extension, with significant spatial gradient difference in ‘city center-periphery’; 2)Mixed land use degree of Shanghai is high, and decreases from city center to suburb slowly with more balanced distribution; 3)Overall, the area of spatial consistency accounted for about 43%, and Shanghai can be divided into three regions: ‘city center-suburban new town’ with high compact high mixed, ‘city fringe area’ with low compact high mixed, ‘outer suburbs’ with low compact low mixed. Shanghai has formed ‘central city-suburban new town’ which spreads toward the heart with a high compact and high mixed spatial pattern. We can <br> implement multiple and complementary regional development policies through integrating urban space form and layout of land use, in order to facilitate urban space optimization and the stock land reform.

Abstract:Affordable housing policy was gradually established with the development of economic system reform, especially the housing system reform. As further asking for establishing a comprehensive housing supply system which should give priority to affordable housing, this resulted in the rapid development of affordable housing all over the country. Harbin started to construct affordable housing from 1996([2]). Over eighty affordable housing projects have been constructed until now, including houses constructed by working units for their employees, accommodating a large number of low- and middle-income families. This paper started by reviewing the development of affordable housing in Harbin City. Then, it surveyed the composition of residents, location and transportation of the sites, housing types, housing quality, and local infrastructures of 8 affordable housing districts through interview and questionnaires. The problems of the current policy of affordable housing were analyzed according to the results of the survey. At last, several suggestions were put forward to improve the affordable housing policy.

Abstract:The share of Dutch social housing is the highest in the Europe Union and it is managed by housing association. This paper overviews the Dutch housing association development and its changes in built and management field according to changes of the housing policies. Dutch housing association has two dual-features before 1990s: private organization with public responsibility and private institution financed by government. But after the 1990s, Dutch housing association was financed independently. It also describes the role of housing association with government, tenants and between housing associations. The model of Dutch housing association could provide some insights for China's social housing construction and management.
