Abstract:Abbe’s diffraction limit restricts the resolution of an optical imaging and lithography system. A coherent Rabi oscillation is shown to be able to overcome the diffraction limit in both optical and atom lithography. In previous studies, semiclassical theory is applied, where the driving field is treated as a classical light, and quantum fluctuation is neglected. Here, we show that the quantum fluctuation may reduce the visibility of the superresolution pattern. However, by squeezing the photon number fluctuation, we are able to significantly increase its visibility.

Abstract:We investigate squeezing of the resonance fluorescence of a laser-driven quantum dot (QD) close to a graphene sheet. The coupling between the QD and the surface plasmon around the graphene sheet is frequency dependent in the terahertz region, which can be adjusted by the laser intensity. Distinct decay rates in different transition channels of dressed QDs can be achieved due to the tailored photon reservoir, which can be used to improve the squeezing. It is found that increases in both the dephasing rate and the environmental temperature are harmful to the squeezing. Meanwhile, an enhancement in the QD-plasmon coupling strength may reduce the fragility of squeezing against the decoherence process. Additionally, in the strong light-matter coupling region, squeezing can be largely enhanced by tuning the strength of the pump field and its detuning from the QD.

Abstract:Single quantum emitters like atoms are well-known as non-classical light sources which can produce photons one by one at given times, with reduced intensity noise. However, the light field emitted by a single atom can exhibit much richer dynamics. A prominent example is the predicted ability for a single atom to produce quadrature-squeezed light, with sub-shot-noise amplitude or phase fluctuations. It has long been foreseen, though, that such squeezing would be "at least an order of magnitude more difficult" to observe than the emission of single photons. Squeezed beams have been generated using macroscopic and mesoscopic media down to a few tens of atoms, but despite experimental efforts, single-atom squeezing has so far escaped observation. Here we generate squeezed light with a single atom in a high-finesse optical resonator. The strong coupling of the atom to the cavity field induces a genuine quantum mechanical nonlinearity, several orders of magnitude larger than for usual macroscopic media. This produces observable quadrature squeezing with an excitation beam containing on average only two photons per system lifetime. In sharp contrast to the emission of single photons, the squeezed light stems from the quantum coherence of photon pairs emitted from the system. The ability of a single atom to induce strong coherent interactions between propagating photons opens up new perspectives for photonic quantum logic with single emitters

Abstract:Quantum interface between photons is a long-standing goal of fundamental significance, and also provides powerful tools for quantum technologies. Remarkable advances in quantum optics have recently been developed in several platforms to demonstrate quantum-by-quantum control of light at the single-photon level. Here, we propose a platform based on thermal motion of atoms to realize light-by-light control at the quantum level. We demonstrate spatially-multiplexing squeezed light in an anti-relaxation coated vapor cell, where moving atoms with long-lived ground state spin mediates the quantum noise coupling between spatially separated optical channels. It behaves as squeezed light in one optical channel is partially transferred to other distant channels with laser powers below the threshold for squeezed light generation. Array of squeezed light beams is created with low laser power $sim$ mW. This approach holds great promise for applications in multi-node quantum network and quantum enhanced technologies such as quantum imaging and sensing.

Abstract:Squeezed spin states and squeezed light are both key resources for quantum metrology and quantum information science, but have been separately investigated in experiments so far. Simultaneous generation of these two types of quantum states in one experiment setup is intriguing but remains a challenging goal. Here we propose a novel protocol based on judiciously engineered symmetric atom-light interaction, and report proof-of-principle experimental results of concurrent spin squeezing of $0.61\pm0.09~\mathrm{dB}$ and light squeezing of $0.65^{+0.11}_{-0.10}~\mathrm{dB}$ in a hot atomic ensemble. The squeezing process is deterministic, yielding fixed squeezing directions for both the light field and the collective atomic spin. Furthermore, the squeezed light modes lie in the multiple frequency sidebands of a single spatial mode. This new type of dual squeezed state is applicable for quantum enhanced metrology and quantum networks. Our method can be extended to other quantum platforms such as optomechanics, cold atom and trapped ions.

Abstract:We present an experimentally feasible method to produce a large and tunable spin squeezing when an ensemble of many four-level atoms interacts simultaneously with a single-mode photon and classical driving lasers. Our approach is to simply introduce a time-dependent collective atom-photon coupling. We show that the maximal squeezing factor measured experimentally can be well controlled by both its driving magnitude and driving frequency. In particular, when increasing the driving magnitude, the maximal squeezing factor increases and thus can be rapidly enhanced. We also demonstrate explicitly in the high-frequency approximation that this spin squeezing arises from a strong repulsive spin-spin interaction induced by the time-dependent collective atom-photon coupling. Finally, we evaluate analytically, by using current experimental parameters, the maximal squeezing factor, which can reach 40 dB. This squeezing factor is far larger than previous ones.

Abstract:Squeezed optical fields are a powerful resource for a variety of investigations in basic research and technology. However, the generation of intense squeezed light is challenging. Here, we show that intense squeezed light can be produced using strongly laser driven atoms and the so far unrelated process of high harmonic generation. We demonstrate that when the intensity of the driving field significantly depletes the ground state of the atoms, leading to dipole moment correlations, the quantum state of the driving field and the generated high harmonics are entangled and squeezed. Furthermore, we analyze how the resulting quadrature squeezing of the fundamental laser mode after the interaction can be controlled. Abstract:Squeezed light is a particularly useful quantum resource, which finds broad applications in quantum information processing, quantum metrology and sensing, and biological measurements. It has been successfully generated in various physical systems. Here we introduce a new mechanism and system to produce squeezed light using an exciton-phonon cavity-QED system. Specifically, we adopt a semiconductor microcavity embedded with a quantum well, which supports both linear and nonlinear interactions among excitons, phonons, and cavity photons. We show that the strong exciton-phonon nonlinear interaction can induce a quadrature-squeezed cavity output field, and reveal an important role of the exciton-photon coupling in engineering the squeezing spectrum and improving the robustness of the squeezing against thermal noise. Our results indicate that room-temperature squeezing of light is possible for materials with high exciton binding energy.

Abstract:We investigate steady-state squeezing in the phase quadratures of the resonance fluorescence emitted from a coherently driven four-level atom of Lambda configuration. Quantum fluctuation spectra of the optimum-phase quadratures are calculated. We show that if quantum interference between spontaneous emission channels from closed excited states to lower levels of the atom takes place, squeezing in the optimum-phase quadrature can occur in a very wider region of the parameter space than that predicted by previous studies. We also show that the quantum interference can greatly change the atomic coherences and then lead to this interesting result.

Abstract:We propose an experimentally feasible method for enhancing the atom-field coupling as well as the ratio between this coupling and dissipation (i.e., cooperativity) in an optical cavity. It exploits optical parametric amplification to exponentially enhance the atom-cavity interaction and, hence, the cooperativity of the system, with the squeezing-induced noise being completely eliminated. Consequently, the atom-cavity system can be driven from the weak-coupling regime to the strong-coupling regime for modest squeezing parameters, and even can achieve an effective cooperativity much larger than 100. Based on this, we further demonstrate the generation of steady-state nearly maximal quantum entanglement. The resulting entanglement infidelity (which quantifies the deviation of the actual state from a maximally entangled state) is exponentially smaller than the lower bound on the infidelities obtained in other dissipative entanglement preparations without applying squeezing. In principle, we can make an arbitrarily small infidelity. Our generic method for enhancing atom-cavity interaction and cooperativities can be implemented in a wide range of physical systems, and it can provide diverse applications for quantum information processing.

Abstract:Abstract To achieve a high degree of quantum noise squeezing, nonlinear optical interaction process is often employed. Here, we propose to utilize quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) and Fano resonances to enhance optical squeezing without nonlinearity. The theory of quantization for electromagnetic fields in the periodic nanostructure with dispersion and absorption has been developed by means of the Green’s function technique with the plane wave expansion method. The quasi-BICs and Fano resonances of radiation modes are realized by designing the photonic crystal slab structure. Based on these quasi-BICs and Fano resonances, we demonstrate that strong squeezed states can be realized by using the balanced homodyne detection scheme. The squeezing degree can be improved by more than 14 times when a weak squeezed states passes through the structure with quasi-BICs and Fano resonances. The advantage of this method is that it is not only efficient but also easy to implement because the nonlinear optical processes are not employed, which is very beneficial for the quantum information processing and precision metrology.

Abstract:It is shown that 100% squeezed output can be produced in the resonance fluorescence from a coherently driven two-level atom interacting with a squeezed vacuum. This is only possible for N=1/8 squeezed input, and is associated with a pure atomic state, i.e., a completely polarized state. The quadrature for which optimal squeezing occurs depends on the squeezing phase Φ, the Rabi frequency Ω, and the atomic detuning Δ. Pure states are described for arbitrary Φ, not just Φ=0 or π as in previous work. For small values of N, there may be a greater degree of squeezing in the output field than the input, i.e., we have squeezing amplification.

Abstract:A weak measurement approach is proposed to entangle and squeeze atoms. We show that even for very small coupling strength between light and atoms, one can achieve large squeezing unattainable with normal measurement-based squeezing. Post-selecting the photons interacting with spins via a weak off-resonant quantum nondemolition interaction (QND) in a state nearly orthogonal to its initial state can strengthen the entanglement among elementary spins and thus enhance spin squeezing. The squeezing process is probabilistic but the created state is unconditionally determined. Further control of the post-selection parameter and the detection process can transform the QND-like spin squeezing into the one-axis-twisting or even two-axis-twisting type.

Abstract:The interaction strength of an oscillator to a qubit grows with the oscillator's vacuum field fluctuations. The well known degenerate parametric oscillator has revived interest in the regime of strongly detuned squeezing, where its eigenstates are squeezed Fock states. Owing to these amplified field fluctuations, it was recently proposed that squeezing this oscillator would dynamically boost qubit-photon interactions. In a superconducting circuit experiment, we observe a two-fold increase in the dispersive interaction between a qubit and an oscillator at 5.5 dB of squeezing, demonstrating in-situ dynamical control of qubit-photon interactions. This work initiates the experimental coupling of oscillators of squeezed photons to qubits, and cautiously motivates their dissemination in experimental platforms seeking enhanced interactions.

Abstract:Tunable interaction between two atoms in a cavity is realized by interacting the two atoms with an extra controllable single-mode squeezed field. Such a controllable interaction can be further used to control entanglement between the two atoms against amplitude damping decoherence caused by spontaneous emissions. For the independent amplitude damping decoherence channel, entanglement will be lost completely without controls, while it can be partially preserved by the proposed strategy. For the collective amplitude damping decoherence channel, our strategy can enhance the entanglement compared with the uncontrolled case when the entanglement of the uncontrolled stationary state is not too large.

Abstract:The squeezed probe light transmission characteristic through a double electromagnetically induced transparency in tripod-type atomic system was investigated by using the Heisenberg-Langevin approach.The results show that,the squeezing can survive in two electromagnetically induced transparency windows independently.The output squeezing in tripod-type atoms can be better preserved when the frequency detunings of two coupled fields are equal.It is found that the output squeezing is also determined by the Rabi frequency of coupling fields,optical depth and dephasing rate of atoms,and detection frequency.This study has a potential application in multi-channel quantum memory for quantum network.

Abstract:The exact solution to evolution of quantum state of the total system for multi-photon interaction between N-atom and single-model light field has been obtained by using dressed Dicke's state method. Furthermore, the evolution of population inversion of an N-atom system, squeezing of light field and photon antibunching of light field for one-photon interaction and two-photon interaction was investigated respectively. The numerical calculation results were illustrated and some new phenomena of the system were found.
