Prevalence of Mental Disorders in Out-Patients Consulting Gynecologists

Abstract:Objective:To explore the prevalence of mental disorders in out-patients of department of gynecology.Methods: 626 outpatients were collected consecutively and screened with "problem oriented patient report"(POPR). 198 of them with nearly half positive in screening and half negative were reviewed by two psychiatrists with MINI plus (mini international neuropsychiatric interview-English version 5.0). The prevalence of certain mental disorders was calculated.Results:The total prevalence of mental disorders was 38%. Six percent of patients fulfilled more than one disorders. Mental disorders commonly seen in gynecology out-clinics included: generalized anxiety disorder (7.38%), depressive disorders (8.76%), somatoform disorder (8.40%), dysthymia (7.64%), pain disorder (4.98%), phobic disorder (3.51%), obsessional disorder (2.27%), hypochondria (1.00%). Apart from disorders mentioned above, there were also 2.85% patients diagnosed as premenstrual dysthymia and 5.71% patients as suicidal problem (attempted suicide or suicide ideation) according to DSM-IV criteria in its appendix.Conclusion:Considerable gynecology outpatients have mental disorders, mainly as depression, anxiety, or somatoform disorders.
