Abstract:A rigorous surface integral equation approach is proposed to study the spontaneous emission of a quantum emitter embedded in a multilayered plasmonic structure with the presence of arbitrarily shaped metallic nanoscatterers. With the aid of the Fermi's golden rule, the spontaneous emission of the emitter can be calculated from the local density of states, which can be further expressed by the imaginary part of the dyadic Green's function of the whole electromagnetic system. To obtain this Green's function numerically, a surface integral equation is established taking into account the scattering from the metallic nanoscatterers. Particularly, the modeling of the planar multilayered structure is simplified by applying the layered medium Green's function to reduce the computational domain and hence the memory requirement. Regarding the evaluation of Sommerfeld integrals in the layered medium Green's function, the discrete complex image method is adopted to accelerate the evaluation process. This work offers an accurate and efficient simulation tool for analyzing complex multilayered plasmonic system, which is commonly encountered in the design of optical elements and devices.
3D Topological Plasmons in Weyl Semimetals

Abstract:We systematically investigate the properties of bulk, surface and edge plasmons in Weyl semimetals in presence of a magnetic field. It is found that unidirectional plasmons with different properties exist on different surfaces, which is in consistent with the nontrivial topology of the three-dimensional (3D) bulk plasmons. These novel plasmons possess momentum-location lock and may travel between surfaces. The anomalous Hall conductivity brings about abundant anisotropic plasmon dispersions, from linear to parabolic or even hyperbolic bands. With the help of a semiclassical picture for the formation of the Weyl orbits, we point out the Fermi-arc plasmons at opposite surfaces can make up another unique 3D topological plasmon. Furthermore, there is a gapless unidirectional edge plasmon protected by the topology whose direction and position can be controlled by external field. Our work thus uncovers topological features of Weyl plasmons, which may have important applications in photoelectric devices based on chiral/topological plasmonics.

Abstract:Abstract — Riemann invariants for Maxwell's equations are applied to the inverse problem of determining the electron density of a plasma in a spherical coordinate system. The tangential components of the electromagnetic fields are given on a part of the surface of a sphere (the source, an electric impulse dipole, is located at the center of the sphere), and the reconstruction of the electron density outside the sphere is desired. The structure of the fundamental solution is analyzed. A uniqueness theorem and a stability estimate for the inverse problem are given.

Abstract:Despite numerous applications of two-dimensional plasmons for electromagnetic energy manipulation at the nanoscale, their quantitative refraction and reflection laws (analogs of Fresnel formulas in optics) have not yet been established. This fact can be traced down to the strong non-locality of equations governing the 2d plasmon propagation. Here, we tackle this difficulty by direct solution of plasmon scattering problem with Wiener-Hopf technique. We obtain the reflection and transmission coefficients for 2d plasmons at the discontinuity of 2d conductivity at arbitrary incidence angle, for both gated and non-gated 2d systems. At a certain incidence angle, the absolute reflectivity has a pronounced dip reaching zero for gated plasmons. The dip is associated with wave passage causing no dynamic charge accumulation at the boundary. For all incidence angles, the reflection has a non-trivial phase different from zero and $\pi$.

Abstract:The nonlinear dynamics of three-dimensional ion acoustic waves near critical density in plasmas consisting of electrons, positive and negative ions in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field are investigated. In the weak nonlinear and dispersive limit, the nonlinear wave is shown to be governed by a Gardner–Zakharov–Kuznetsov (GZK) equation, which is also shown to be integrable in the sense of Painlevé only on the traveling wave frame. The invariant Painlevé analysis provides the analytical solutions in the closed form of solitary, cnoidal, double layer and bipolar structures. The Lyapunov stability analysis shows that the stationary solitary structure is always unstable due to the three-dimensional effect. Finally, the stability of one-dimensional solitary wave has been checked in the transverse direction and the regions of stability (and instability) have been separated in terms of parameters. The results are in qualitative agreement with the observations in magnetized plasmas with negative ions.

Abstract:The propagation of asymmetric relativistic intense laser beams in nonuniform and uniform underdense cold plasmas is studied. After simplifying the wave equation, we obtain the evolution equation of the transverse centroid of laser beams in terms of variational approaches. Theoretical analysis shows that in uniform plasmas a laser beam with an asymmetric initial phase has a constant centroid drift velocity, at which the centroid of the laser beam drifts away from the light axis in a fixed direction; the centroid drift velocity of a laser beam with symmetric initial phase, but either symmetric or asymmetric amplitude, is always zero, i.e., the symmetric features of the laser field is retained. Furthermore, the channel-like symmetric plasma plays a role like a restoring force to confine the laser centroid around the density channel axis so the centroid of the laser beam with asymmetric amplitude or phase is going to oscillate with damp around the channel axis. The nonlinear effect can symmetrize initially asymmetric laser beams and the steeper effective density gradient is more beneficial to the symmetrizing process. Finally, the analytic results are checked and confirmed by numerical simulations with finite difference to the wave equation and two-dimensional particle-in-cell code. Abstract:We solve analytically the multiple-scattering equations for two-dimensional photonic crystals in the long-wavelength limit. Different approximations of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities are presented from a unified pseudopotential point of view. The nature of the so-called plasmon-polariton bands is clarified. Its frequency as a function of the wire radius is discussed. The corresponding tunable "magnetic surface plasmon" band is pointed out.

Abstract:The process of propagation of cylindrical and spherical ion acoustic solitary waves in an electron, positron, and ion plasma system is studied. The electrons are considered to have the generalized (r; q) distribution, while the positrons are supposed to have the kappa distribution, also known as the Lorentzian distribution. The classic nonlinear equation, Korteweg de-Vries (KdV), has been numerically solved by employing appropriate mathematical transformations. The role of various plasma parameters and nonplanar geometry on the widths and amplitudes of nonlinear ion acoustic structures has been numerically investigated. The current study could be helpful to understand the significance of cylindrical and spherical solitary waves in astrophysical as well as in space plasmas.

Three-dimensional instability of two nonlinearly coupled electromagnetic waves in a plasma

Abstract:The three-dimensional instability of two coupled electromagnetic waves in an unmagnetized plasma is investigated theoretically and numerically. In the regime of two-plasmon decay, where one pump wave frequency is approximately twice the electron plasma frequency, we find that the coupled pump waves give rise to enhanced instability with wave vectors between those of the two beams. In the case of ion parametric decay instability, where the pump wave decays into one Langmuir wave and one ion acoustic wave, the instability regions are added with no distinct amplification. Our investigation can be useful in interpreting laser-plasma as well as ionospheric heating experiments.

Energy Band Structure of Relativistic Quantum Plasmon Excitation

Abstract:In this paper we use the effective Schrödinger-Poisson and square-root Klein-Gordon-Poisson models to study the quantum and relativistic quantum energy band structure of finite temperature electron gas in a neutralizing charge background. Based the plasmon band gap appearing above the Fermi level, new definitions on plasmonic excitations and plasma parameters in a wide electron temperature-density regime is suggested. The new equation of state (EoS) for excited electrons to the plasmon band leads to novel aspects of relativistic collective quantum excitations such as the plasmon black-out and quantum pressure collapse which are studied using both non-relativistic and relativistic quantum models. The plasmon black-out effect may be used to explain why metallic elements do not show collective behavior at low temperatures. The model can be used to predict phases of matter in which the plasmonic activities is shut down, hence, it may behave like a mysterious dark matter. On the other hand, the energy band structure model predicts the plasmon pressure collapse in temperature-density coordinates matching that of a white dwarf star. The prediction of energy band structure of collective quantum excitations may have direct implications for the inertial confinement fusion (ICF), the EoS of warm dense matter (WDM) and evolution of stellar and other unknown cosmological structures. It is found that predictions of non-relativistic and relativistic quantum excitation models closely match up to temperature-density of degenerate stars which confirms the relevance of non-relativistic plasmon models used in the warm and dense matter regime. The effect of positron on band structure of collective quantum excitations is also studied.

Oblique photons, plasmons, and current-plasmons in relativistic plasmas and their topological implications

Abstract:Photons in vacuum are transverse in any inertial frame; longitudinal photons only exist virtually. By developing a manifestly covariant theory for electromagnetic excitations in relativistic plasmas and applying Wigner's little group method for elementary particle classifications, we show that photons in plasmas are neither transverse nor longitudinal; they are oblique. Plasmons are electromagnetic and oblique as well. The Lorentz invariant characteristics that distinguishes photons and plasmons is covariant compressibility. The manifestly covariant theory predicts the existence of the current-plasmon, a third oblique, electromagnetic eigenmode, and it also enables the study of photon topology in plasmas. Plasmas remove the photon's Dirac point in vacuum by giving it an effective mass, but create a tilted Dirac-Weyl point by reviving the virtual longitudinal photon.

Intrinsic plasmons in two-dimensional Dirac materials

Abstract:We consider theoretically, using the random phase approximation (RPA), low-energy intrinsic plasmons for two-dimensional (2D) systems obeying Dirac-like linear chiral dispersion with the chemical potential set precisely at the charge neutral Dirac point. The “intrinsic Dirac plasmon” energy has the characteristic q dispersion in the 2D wave vector q, but vanishes as T in temperature for both monolayer and bilayer graphene. The intrinsic plasmon becomes overdamped for a fixed q as T→0 since the level broadening (i.e., the decay of the plasmon into electron-hole pairs due to Landau damping) increases as 1/T as temperature decreases, however, the plasmon mode remains well defined at any fixed T (no matter how small) as q→0. We find the intrinsic plasmon to be well defined as long as q

Abstract:While models of terahertz frequency plasmons in 2D electron systems are usually developed by reducing the number of spatial dimensions, fully 3D models may be needed for the design and analysis of realistic structures. Using full-wave electromagnetic simulations, we have analysed the plasmons and magnetoplasmons observed in two recent experiments. Here, we demonstrate agreement between the theoretical and the experimental results, and discuss further device characteristics such as plasmon transmission, reflection, absorption, and field distributions. We then compare the 3D full-wave simulations with a 2D model. Finally, we discuss approaches for increasing signal transmission and reducing reflection, with direct relevance for improving future experiments.
Plasmons for the Hartree equations with Coulomb interaction

Abstract:In this work, we establish the existence and decay of {\em plasmons}, the quantum of Langmuir's oscillatory waves found in plasma physics, for the linearized Hartree equations describing an interacting gas of infinitely many fermions near general translation-invariant steady states, including compactly supported Fermi gases at zero temperature, in the whole space $\RR^d$ for $d\ge 2$. Notably, these plasmons exist precisely due to the long-range pair interaction between the particles. Next, we provide a survival threshold of spatial frequencies, below which the plasmons purely oscillate and disperse like a Klein-Gordon's wave, while at the threshold they are damped by {\em Landau damping}, the classical decaying mechanism due to their resonant interaction with the background fermions. The explicit rate of Landau damping is provided for general radial homogenous equilibria. Above the threshold, the density of the excited fermions is well approximated by that of the free gas dynamics and thus decays rapidly fast for each Fourier mode via {\em phase mixing}. Finally, pointwise bounds on the Green function and dispersive estimates on the density are established.

Abstract:Spontaneous emission in photonic crystals with anisotropic three-dimensional dispersion relation is studied. If the upper level is below a characteristic frequency omega(1), or above omega(2), or between omega(1) and omega(2), the radiation is a localized field with a frequency in the band gap, or a propagating field with a frquency in the band, or a diffusion field, respectively. An analytical expression for the Lamb shift is obtained. The Lamb shift for the current case is small compared to that in an ordinary vacuum or in one- or two-dimensional photonic crystals due to lower density of states.

Abstract:We have analyzed field line resonances of Alfvén waves in a rectangular box model with a straight uniform magnetic field but three‐dimensionally varying density. Field line resonances are shown to exist even with this three‐dimensional nonuniformity. For a given wave frequency we can construct the surface on which the resonance occurs and derive the local form of the singular solution. Magnetic perturbations are found to lie predominantly in the resonant surface. In the presence of azimuthal inhomogeneities the present theory could explain why some satellite measurements show geomagnetic pulsations of comparable magnitude in radial and azimuthal components.

Abstract:The progress in two-dimensional materials has led to rapid experimental developments in quantum plasmonics, where light is manipulated using plasmons. Although numerical methods can be used to quantitatively describe plasmons in spatially inhomogeneous systems, they are limited to relatively small setups. Here, we present a novel semi-analytical method to describe plasmons in two-dimensional inhomogeneous media within the framework of the Random Phase Approximation (RPA). Our approach is based on the semiclassical approximation, which is formally applicable when the length scale of the inhomogeneity is much larger than the plasmon wavelength. We obtain an effective classical Hamiltonian for quantum plasmons by first separating the in-plane and out-of-plane degrees of freedom and subsequently employing the semiclassical Ansatz for the electrostatic plasmon potential. We illustrate this general theory by considering scattering of plasmons by radially symmetric inhomogeneities. We derive a semiclassical expression for the differential scattering cross section and compute its numerical values for a specific model of the inhomogeneity.

Three-Dimensional Approach Applied to Quasi-stationary States of Deformed $\alpha$-Emitters

Abstract:We apply a three-dimensional (3D) approach to investigate the quasi-stationary states of well-deformed $\alpha$-emitters. With a splitting of the anisotropic 3D potential into internal and external parts at a separation surface, the 3D $\alpha$-cluster decay width is determined by the initial wave function of a true bound state of an anisotropic harmonic oscillator potential and a non-resonance scattering wave function of Coulomb potential. Substantial difference between the 1D and 3D decay width is found for typical $\alpha$-emitters with large quadrupole and hexadecapole deformations.

Abstract:Plasmons are usually described in terms of macroscopic quantities such as electric fields and currents. However as fundamental excitations of metals they are also quantum objects with internal structure. We demonstrate that this can induce an intrinsic dipole moment which is tied to the quantum geometry of the Hilbert space of plasmon states. This {\it quantum geometric dipole} offers a unique handle for manipulation of plasmon dynamics, via density modulations and electric fields. As a concrete example we demonstrate that scattering of plasmons with non-vanishing quantum geometric dipole from impurities is non-reciprocal, skewing in different directions in a valley-dependent fashion. This internal structure can be used to control plasmon trajectories in two dimensional materials.
