Abstract:This paper reviews literatures on China's urban village in four aspects containing definition,developing mechanism,value judgment and renewal measures. It is argued that neutral attitude should be taken as the logic beginning of policy analysis;an conceptual framework of"Institution-Action"could be used to explain the shaping mechanism of urban village;and in order to formulating synthetically strategies of community governance,the view of livable urban low-quality community should be hold in planning process,and existing institution factors and its related constraints should be well assessed.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, the New Urbanism has emerged as a controversial alternative to conventional patterns of urban development. Although growing in popularity, it has received a sceptical reception in journals of planning, architecture and geography. This paper reviews criticisms of the New Urbanism and examines evidence and arguments on both sides of each issue. Critiques may be roughly divided into those involving empirical performance, ideological and cultural affinities, and aesthetic quality. While insufficient evidence exists in some cases to make final judgments, it is argued that the critical attack on the New Urbanism remains unconvincing. Much of the critical literature is flawed by the use of caricature, inadequate sampling of projects, deficient understanding of New Urbanist principles and practices, premature judgments, unrealistic expectations and ideological bias. While New Urbanists can learn from the critiques of their work, and research gaps need to be filled, the New Urbanism remains a resilient, practical and well-founded alternative to conventional land development practices.

Abstract:Reviewing the development of western new-towns constructions,this paper makes us believe that the large cit-ies in China should also built new-towns but avoid the problems of it. Then,it re-views the new urbanism from the aspects of its context and basic opinions. In the end,it reconsiders Chinese new-town constructions based on the new urbanism,and analyzes some issues about the new urbanism itself.

Abstract:The paper summarizes the studies on urban village (chengzhongcun) in domestic and abroad from four perspectives including the concepts and definitions,the formation mechanism,the value orientations,and the renovation and reform strategies.Based on the summary,the paper states that a neutralized value orientation should be the logical starting point of analysis on urban village;the formation of urban village should be interpreted within the framework of "institution-action;" and the strategy of community management of urban village should be made from the angle of constructing city low-grade community and the restrictions of current institutions and various practical conditions.

Abstract:The New Urbanism, which emerged in 1990s, mainly aims to revive communities and eliminate the effects of urban sprawl from the angle of community planning and design. This theory receives great success and is widely accepted. However, in China, concept confusion and mechanical copy are not rare in the application of New Urbanism in community planning and research. With a profound understanding of the origins and connotations of New Urbanism, this thesis discusses the differences between China and the Western countries, which are the motive of urban sprawl, the compactness of community, the relation between the city center and the suburb, the community culture and the stage of the development of transportation. Then, regarding the issues that emerged from mechanically copying the design principles and blindly copying the local context in China, such as the loss of cultural roots and livability caused by deliberate imitation, it proposes five planning principles and implementation approaches of how to build New Urbanism community within China, including the justice of urban roads and commuter traffic, the sharing of community resource and the accessibility of public space, environmental and ecological sustainability, community and site-cultural sustainability.
An Analysis Of Livable City Planning: A Community View

Abstract:The existence and development of cities is to make citizen's social production and daily life a better one. However, in the current process of urbanization, too much attention is paid on the industrial production. Little research to date has been focused on the livability of cities. Given this, this paper first reviewed the theoretical research and construction practice of livable city at home and abroad and then analyzed the problems of the new residential areas and old street areas from the community perspective. By using the case study and comparative analysis method, the paper also analyzed the interaction between China's urban growth pattern flaws and urban land use structure, as well as their impacts on existing residential pattern called residential district pattern of Modernism. The impact of the New Urbanism TND model on China's community construction is investigated and the difference between the residential districts and TND communities is also analyzed by using a practical case study in Gemdale Zizai City. Finally, the Chinese livable community model based on TND is proposed in the study, which provides a reference for theoretical research and construction practice on China's livable city.

Abstract:Opinions about new urbanism have polarized. From the academy, analysts have generally nurtured a vigorous contempt for new urbanism, while planning practitioners view it simply as the most recent articulation of a reoccurring planning theme: simple clusters of housing, retail space, and offices within a quarter-mile walking radius of a transit system. In this paper, I argue that while there is much to discredit in current applications of new urbanism, there is a need to recast the debate in such a way that the principles of new urbanism can be upheld and specific applications can be continually revised. A recast debate would focus on either: (1) the underlying conceptual framework required for proper discussion of any normative planning; (2) the specific normative principles of new urbanism; (3) the descriptive assumptions used by new urbanists; or (4) the specific experiences of, to date, applied new urbanism. To articulate the specifics of this recast debate, I argue the following: (1) that there are two underlying viewpoints that must be accepted before any constructive debate on new urbanism can proceed; (2) that the principles of new urbanism are part of a long-standing, well-articulated school of thought about urban problems and their solutions, which is shared by a great many urban reformers; (3) that critiques of new urbanism have focused not on these principles but on either the assumptions on which new urbanist arguments have been (not very effectively) articulated, or on the problems of its implementation, neither of which are fatal; and (4) that a restructured debate on new urbanism, one that takes these varying levels of discourse into account, would be more effective if it centered on either (a) the principles and assumptions underlying new urbanism, which could in fact lead to a reappraisal of new urbanist prescription, or (b) in the event that the principles are basically agreed on, an investigation of the causes of implementation failure. Abstract:China's urbanization process has followed a unique course and transformed the country in a very short period of time. Yet problems have arisen and the New Urbanization Policy 2014–2020 is designed to overcome many of these. This policy note outlines the objectives of the new policy, including a partial relaxation of the strict urban residency (hukou) rules, the move toward people-oriented urbanization and the expected changes that will occur in rural areas, particularly with respect to rural land. The paper concludes with a number of questions that do not appear to have been satisfactorily answered by the new policy. Will the differentiated hukou system be effective? Will the rapid urbanization of rural land be curbed? Will the new urbanization make China's cities more or less efficient? What are the plans to reform local government finance? How will the problem of loss of rural collective lands be addressed? The new policy is viewed as an important first step, but unanswered questions remain.

Abstract:The strategy of development priority zoning proposed in the "11th Five-Year Plan" shall provide a new impetus paradigm to the development of urbanization in China.In the field of land use planning or urban planning,whether it gives priority to development or protection,different divisions lead to different land spatial structure and different urban development pattern.On the basis of the review of China's urban policy,the paper examined the existing problems evolving from the development and construction as well as the protection in our country.On one hand,due to the rapid development of urbanization and industrialization in China,the characteristic of the period is reflected as the continuous expansion of land scale.On the other hand,land resources,as well as ecological environment protection are the policy needed to be implemented owing to the relative lack of land resource per capita from the perspective of sustainable development.Thus the contradictions between land development and protection arise in theory;and the disharmony between the general county(city) planning and land use planning appears in the real world.The proposal of development priority zoning not only provides strategic guidance to regional land use patterns as well as urban policy choices in theory but also outlines the integration platform for the general county(city) planning and land use planning in reality.

New Urbanism advocates the creation and reconstruction of diverse,walk-able,compact,mixed-use community re-integration of the built environment to form a complete cities,towns,villages and neighborhood units. Therefore,the new urbanism design concept has a direct and realistic enlightenment for the present city and community building in China.

Abstract:Drawing on the theory of neoMarxism urbanization and regarding urbanization as a spatial practice,this paper analyzes the historical process of urbanization in China from the three aspects including use value and exchange value,rural relation and urban relation,and space and capital,summarizes the lessons learned and the development laws,and reveals the existing problems and contradictions.Furthermore,the paper proposes the development direction and spatial strategies for the future urbanization in China from the perspective of space and suggests that new urbanization based on new urban-rural relationship should be taken and that Marxism should be developed and flexibly applied to the practice of new urbanization.

Abstract:This essay reviews three books on contemporary Chinese urbanism. The first book, Designing Reform, understands the exceptionalism of Chinese reform through architectural evidence. The second book, The Shenzhen Experiment, further argues for the exceptionalism and non-replicability of Shenzhen reform. The third book, The City After Chinese New Towns, similarly highlights the unprecedentedness of Chinese new towns. These three recent publications collectively aim to demystify contemporary Chinese urbanism, and have done so with a sensibility towards space, geography, materiality, and infrastructure. These authors and editors are mainly architectural researchers leveraging disciplinary contributions to the discussion of post-socialist China. In turn, they have also contributed to the field of architecture and urban design with rich case studies in China. This review essay aims to understand (i) their geographical and spatial perspectives, (ii) their architectural design perspectives, and (iii) how they address social justice issues. It seeks to formulate contemporary Chinese urbanization as an object of inquiry, to “exceptionalize” Chinese phenomena, and to argue for the pedagogical contribution of Chinese case studies to architecture and urban design.

Abstract:In the past forty years, more than 3,800 new towns emerged and accommodated over 150 million urban inhabitants in China, which drew much attention since they were reported as “ghost cities” by media in the late 2000s. This literature review examines existing research and synthesizes current discussions through a meta-analysis. It concludes that existing literature, led by environmental scientists and designers, exhibits two polarized debates around the new towns’ uniqueness and the future of ghost cities. Gaps exist in national-scale surveys, criticism of planning methodology, and theories that can explain the current disputes.

Abstract:As one of the discourses of criticism on the New Cultural and Literary Movements,Gu Hongming's critical theory and practice haven't received due attention for a long time. The reason for it lies in the fact that Chinese literary criticism is unfamiliar with the background of Gu Hongming's discourse resources and his discourse theories, for his essays of literary and cultural criticism were mainly written in English and published in the foreign newspapers in major Chinese port cities. Even up to now, the research of modern Chinese literary history seems to be blind to Gu Hongming's criticism, which is actually a defect in our perspective on literature and culture. Gu Hongming's criticism shares much with the criticism of the new humanism of Irving Babbitt and the intellectuals of Xue-Heng School. The connection of thoughts found between them will effectively modify the historical narration of the intellectuals of Xue-Heng School's on New Literature and New Culture, with which the ″anti-liberalism″ in modern Chinese literature can be traced back to Gu Hongming in about the 1880s. Therefore, much to our amazement, the characteristics of globalization and modernization could be found in the Chinese literary and cultural criticism of that historical period.
