Abstract:The origin of the even-odd rotational state population alternation in the O-16(2)(a(1)Delta(g)) fragments resulting from the ultraviolet (UV) photodissociation of O-16(3), a phenomenon first observed over 30 years ago, has been elucidated using full quantum theory. The calculated O-16(2)(a(1)Delta(g)) rotational state distribution following the 266-nm photolysis of 60 K ozone shows a strong even-odd propensity, in excellent agreement with the new experimental rotational state distribution measured under the same conditions. Theory indicates that the even rotational states are significantly more populated than the adjacent odd rotational states because of a preference for the formation of the A' Lambda-doublet, which can only occupy even rotational states due to the exchange symmetry of the two bosonic O-16 nuclei, and thus not as a result of parity-selective curve crossing as previously proposed. For nonrotating ozone, its dissociation on the excited B(1)A' state dictates that only A' Lambda-doublets are populated, due to symmetry conservation. This selection rule is relaxed for rotating parent molecules, but a preference still persists for A' Lambda-doublets. The A ''/A' ratio increases with increasing ozone rotational quantum number, and thus with increasing temperature, explaining the previously observed temperature dependence of the even-odd population alternation. In light of these results, it is concluded that the previously proposed parity-selective curve-crossing mechanism cannot be a source of heavy isotopic enrichment in the atmosphere.
Imaging study of O3 photodissociation in the Huggins band

Abstract:We report a velocity-mapped ion imaging study of the photodissociation of O3 in the Huggins band. The O(3PJ) images show evidence for three electronic channels producing O2(X3Σg-), O2(a1∆g), and O2(b1Σg+) state fragments, with the latter two arising from the spin-forbidden photodissociation of O3. Forward convolution simulations of the derived total translational energy distributions permit extraction of the vibrational state distribution for each O2 electronic state. All these distributions peak near v = 0 and decrease monotonically with the vibrational state. The wavelength-dependent branching of the three electronic channels has been determined and is approximately constant over the wavelength region studied (322-328 nm). We have observed that the O2 electronic state branching ratios depend on the coincident O(3PJ) spin-orbit state, and the O2(b1Σg+) state is particularly sensitive. These results are qualitatively consistent with previous calculations on the coupling of the initially excited state to dissociative states by Rosenwaks and Grebenshchikov [J. Phys. Chem. A. 114, 9809-9819 (2010)]. The spatial anisotropy of the three dissociation channels has been determined through analysis of the O(3P0) angular distributions. The results are consistent with recent calculations but differ from previous experimental reports. The experimental results provide detailed information on the dissociation dynamics and should motivate new calculations.
New Theoretical Investigations of the Photodissociation of Ozone in the Hartley, Huggins, Chappuis, and Wulf Bands

Abstract:We review recent theoretical studies of the photodissociation of ozone in the wavelength region from 200 nm to 1100 nm comprising four major absorption bands: Hartley and Huggins (near ultraviolet), Chappuis (visible), and Wulf (near infrared). The quantum mechanical dynamics calculations use global potential energy surfaces obtained from new high-level electronic structure calculations. Altogether nine electronic states are taken into account in the theoretical descriptions: four 1A′, two 1A″, one 3A′ and two 3A″ states. Of particular interest is the analysis of diffuse vibrational structures, which are prominent in all absorption bands, and their dynamical origin and assignment. Another focus is the effect of non-adiabatic coupling on lifetimes in the excited states and on the population of the specific electronic product channels.
Long-range interactions in the ozone molecule: spectroscopic and dynamical points of view

Abstract:Using the multipolar expansion of the electrostatic energy, we have characterized the asymptotic interactions between an oxygen atom O$(^3P)$ and an oxygen molecule O$_2(^3\Sigma_g^-)$, both in their electronic ground state. We have calculated the interaction energy induced by the permanent electric quadrupoles of O and O$_2$ and the van der Waals energy. On one hand we determined the 27 electronic potential energy surfaces including spin-orbit connected to the O$(^3P)$ + O$_2(^3\Sigma_g^-)$ dissociation limit of the O--O$_2$ complex. On the other hand we computed the potential energy curves characterizing the interaction between O$(^3P)$ and a O$_2(^3\Sigma_g^-)$ molecule in its lowest vibrational level and in a low rotational level. Such curves are found adiabatic to a good approximation, namely they are only weakly coupled to each other. These results represent a first step for modeling the spectroscopy of ozone bound levels close to the dissociation limit, as well as the low energy collisions between O and O$_2$ thus complementing the knowledge relevant for the ozone formation mechanism.

Photodissociation Dynamics of Superexcited O2: Dissociation Channels O(5S) Vs. O(3S)

Abstract:The photodissociation dynamics of O2, O2 + hυ → O(3P) + O(2p3(4S)3s, 3S/5S), has been studied by combining the XUV laser pump / UV laser probe and velocity map imaging methods in the photon energy range 14.64–15.20 eV. The fragment yield spectra of O(3S) and O(5S) and their velocity map images have been recorded using the state-selective (1+1) REMPI method to detect the fragments. The fragment yield spectra show resolved fine structure that arises from the predissociated Rydberg states I, I′ and I″ (3ΠΩ = 0,1,2). The branching ratios between the two decay channels have been measured by one-photon ionization of the fragments O(3S) and O(5S) simultaneously. It is surprising to find that the dissociation cross sections for the production of O(5S) are larger than, or comparable to, those of O(3S) for the I and I′ states, while the cross sections for the production of O(5S) are smaller than those of O(3S) for the I″ state. All fragments O(5S) arise from perpendicular transitions, which provides direct experimental evidence about the symmetry assignments of the states I, I′ and I″ excited in this energy region. Although most of the fragments O(3S) arise from perpendicular transitions, some of them are from parallel transitions. Based on the calculated ab initio potential energy curves, we propose that the neutral dissociation into O(3P) + O(3S) occurs mainly via the interaction of the Rydberg states I, I′, and I″ with the vibrational continuum of the diabatic 83Πu state (${\rm 1}\pi _{\rm u}^{ - {\rm 1}} {\rm (a}^{\rm 4} {\rm \Pi }_{\rm u} {\rm)3}s\sigma _{\rm g} ,^{\rm 3} \Pi _{\rm u}$1πu−1(a4Πu)3sσg,3Πu), while the neutral dissociation into O(3P) + O(5S) occurs mainly via the interaction of Rydberg states I, I′, and I″ with the diabatic 73Πu (${\rm 1}\pi _{\rm g}^{ - {\rm 1}} {\rm (X}^{\rm 2} {\rm \Pi }_{\rm g} {\rm)3}p{\rm \sigma }_{\rm u} ,^{\rm 3} \Pi _{\rm u}$1πg−1(X2Πg)3pσu,3Πu).

Abstract:The chemistry within the interstellar medium (ISM) is notably influenced by the interplay between kinetics and photochemical processes, which play significant roles in both the formation and destruction of molecular species. This study focuses on theoretical investigations of Al 2 O photochemistry, aiming to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the production of AlO and Al in the VY-CMa star. Utilizing advanced theoretical methodologies, we explore the lowest electronic states with singlet and triplet spin multiplicities in linear Al 2 O. We investigated the photostability of Al 2 O in the near UV‒Vis region, revealing the low likelihood of photodissociation and photoconversion while suggesting the plausibility of fluorescence and phosphorescence phenomena. Calculations also identify three prominent peaks in the UV range at 261.5, 206.2, and 199 nm. Finally, Al 2 O is predicted to be photostable and cannot be the parent molecule of the diatomic AlO or even the astrochemical reservoir of atomic aluminum. These results contribute to improving the astronomical models in simulating aluminum chemistry in the ISM.

Absorption of Solar Radiation by O2: Implications for O3 and Lifetimes of N2O, CFCl3, and CF2Cl2

Abstract:An accurate line‐by‐line model is used to evaluate effects of absorption in the Schumann‐Runge bands of O2 on transmission of ultraviolet radiation. Allowing also for absorption in the Herzberg continuum, the model is shown to provide a reliable simulation of observed transmission in the spectral interval 192 to 200 nm. The model is used to evaluate rates for photolysis of N2O, CFCl3, and CF2Cl2, and to infer global loss rates (1.22×l010 kg N yr−1, 7.21×107 and 3.04×l07 kg Cl yr−1, respectively) and instantaneous lifetimes (123, 44, and 116 years, respectively) appropriate for 1980. A parameterized version of the line‐by‐line model enabling rapid evaluation of transmission in the Schumann‐Runge region is described. Photochemical calculations employing the parameterization and constrained by data from the Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy experiment are used to examine the budget of odd oxygen. Consistent with previous studies, it is shown that photochemical loss of odd oxygen exceeds production by photolysis of O2 for altitudes above 40 km. The imbalance between production and loss is shown to be consistent with a source of odd oxygen proportional to the product of the mixing ratio and photolysis rate of ozone, which suggests that processes involving vibrationally excited O2 may play an important role in production of odd oxygen.

Abstract:We have investigated the vacuum ultra-violet photodissociation of molecular O2 physisorbed on graphite using synchrotron radiation with photon energies in the range 13-35 eV. The yield of desorbed O+ ions shows a threshold at approximately 19.5 eV and resonances at 24.5 eV and 28.5 eV, contrasting strongly with the gas phase photodissociation cross section. The principal mechanism of O+ production appears to be dipolar dissociation driven by photoelectrons generated in the substrate. An enhancement in the detection efficiency of low-energy ions, compared with previous measurements, has identified an additional dissociation mechanism leading to the desorption of O- ions. Specifically, the results support a channel for low-energy O- desorption, attributed to the dissociative attachment of photoelectrons, again generated in the graphite substrate, to the physisorbed O2 molecules.
Ion-Pair Dissociation Dynamics Of O-2 In The Range 17.2-17.5 Ev Studied By Xuv Laser And Velocity Map Imaging Method

Abstract:The ion-pair dissociation dynamics of O-2, O-2 + hv -> O+(S-4) + O-(P-2(1/2,3/2)), in the photon energy range 17.20-17.50 eV has been studied using extreme ultraviolet laser and velocity map imaging method. The ion-pair yield spectrum and the fine structure resolved photofragment O-(P-2(j)) velocity map images have been recorded. The branching ratios between the two spin-orbit components O-(P-2(3/2)) and O-(P-2(1/2)) and the corresponding anisotropy parameters describing their angular distributions have been determined. It is found that the fragments O-(P-2(1/2)) are all from parallel transitions, while the fragments O-(P-2(3/2)) are from both parallel and perpendicular transitions. The main products for most of the excitation photon energies are O-(P-2(1/2)). The dissociation dynamics has been discussed based on the ab initio potential energy curves of the ion-pairs. The major peaks in the ion-pair yield spectrum have been assigned based on the angular distribution of the photofragments. The experimental results suggest that the so-called strong and weak series of Rydberg states converging to O-2(+) (b(4)Sigma(-)(g)) should have symmetries of (3)Sigma(-)(u) and (3)Pi(u), respectively. In addition to the Rydberg states converging to O-2(+) (b(4)Sigma(-)(g)), the Rydberg states converging to O-2(+) (A(2)Pi(u)) should also play a role in the ion-pair dissociation of O-2. Non-adiabatic Effects in the Dissociation of Oxygen Molecules at the Al(111) Surface

Abstract:The measured low initial sticking probability of oxygen molecules at the Al(111) surface that had puzzled the field for many years was recently explained in a non-adiabatic picture invoking spin-selection rules [J. Behler et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 036104 (2005)]. These selection rules tend to conserve the initial spin-triplet character of the free O2 molecule during the molecule's approach to the surface. A new locally-constrained density-functional theory approach gave access to the corresponding potential-energy surface (PES) seen by such an impinging spin-triplet molecule and indicated barriers to dissociation which reduce the sticking probability. Here, we further substantiate this non-adiabatic picture by providing a detailed account of the employed approach. Building on the previous work, we focus in particular on inaccuracies in present-day exchange-correlation functionals. Our analysis shows that small quantitative differences in the spin-triplet constrained PES obtained with different gradient-corrected functionals have a noticeable effect on the lowest kinetic energy part of the resulting sticking curve.

Quenching of Metastable States of Atomic and Molecular Oxygen and Nitrogen

Abstract:The quenching (or deactivation) of metastable states by atmospheric particles is studied by means of a combination of laboratory and observational data. The observational data come mainly from recent rocket measurements of the dayglow. The laboratory results of Kvifte and Vegard are considered in detail, and it is found that the quenching coefficients of O2 for both metastable states of atomic oxygen are very small. The strong atmospheric quenching of the O red lines ( ¹D state) is found to be produced by N2, with a coefficient approaching the gas‐kinetic value. The auroral data that gave a lower quenching rate disagree with the dayglow results and must be rejected; the difficulty is traced to contamination of low‐altitude spectra by light from higher altitudes. Only less detailed treatment of other atoms, molecules, and ions can be made; however, some conclusions are possible. Quenching coefficients seem to range from large to very small in a totally unpredictable fashion. Quenching by electrons is important in only a few special cases. The quenching of vibrationally excited O2 and N2 is slow enough so that significant concentrations can be built up, especially for N2 in aurora.
Oxygen diffusion and reactivity at low temperature on bare amorphous olivine-type silicate

Abstract:The mobility of O atoms at very low temperatures is not generally taken into account, despite O diffusion would add to a series of processes leading to the observed rich molecular diversity in space. We present a study of the mobility and reactivity of O atoms on an amorphous silicate surface. Our results are in the form of RAIRS and temperature-programmed desorption spectra of O2 and O3 produced via two pathways: O + O and O2 + O, investigated in a submonolayer regime and in the range of temperature between 6.5 and 30 K. All the experiments show that ozone is formed efficiently on silicate at any surface temperature between 6.5 and 30 K. The derived upper limit for the activation barriers of O + O and O2 + O reactions is 150 K/kb. Ozone formation at low temperatures indicates that fast diffusion of O atoms is at play even at 6.5 K. Through a series of rate equations included in our model, we also address the reaction mechanisms and show that neither the Eley Rideal nor the Hot atom mechanisms alone can explain the experimental values. The rate of diffusion of O atoms, based on modeling results, is much higher than the one generally expected, and the diffusive process proceeds via the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism enhanced by tunnelling. In fact, quantum effects turn out to be a key factor that cannot be neglected in our simulations. Astrophysically, efficient O3 formation on interstellar dust grains would imply the presence of huge reservoirs of oxygen atoms. Since O3 is a reservoir of elementary oxygen, and also of OH via its hydrogenation, it could explain the observed concomitance of CO2 and H2O in the ices.

Rotational Distributions and Imaging of Singlet O2 Following Spin-Forbidden Photodissociation of O3

Abstract:We report REMPI spectra and velocity-mapped ion images of the O2(a1Δg) and (b1Σg+) fragments arising from the spin-forbidden photodissociation of O3 near 320 and 330 nm. The O2(a1Δg, v = 0) REMPI spectrum following a 320 nm dissociation shows enhanced peak intensity for the odd rotational states relative to the even states, which is the opposite of the trend observed by Gunthardt et al. ( J. Chem. Phys. 2019, 151, 224302) for spin-allowed dissociation at 266 nm but is consistent with the couplings between the B state and 3A' and 3A″ states calculated by Grebenshchikov and Rosenwaks ( J. Phys. Chem. A 2010, 114, 9809-9819). There are no significant differences between the ion image angular distributions of fragments in odd and even rotational states, which indicates a cold distribution of O3 and supports the explanation that the alternation in peak intensities results from a difference in the couplings. Quantitative analysis of the image angular distributions was limited due to the single laser polarization geometry accessible in one-color experiments. Radial distributions of the 320 nm images indicate a broad rotational distribution, evidenced in bimodal speed distributions with peaks corresponding to both high (j = 35-43) and low (j = 17-20) rotational states. The REMPI spectrum of O2(a1Δg) near 330 nm was collected, and while quantitative population analysis is difficult because of the perturbed resonant state, the spectrum clearly supports a broad rotational distribution as well, consistent with the images collected at 320 nm. A 2D-REMPI spectrum was collected following dissociation of O3 near 330 nm, which showed evidence of contributions from O2 fragments in both the a1Δg and b1Σg+ states. The rotational distribution for the O2(b1Σg+, v = 0) product peaks at j = 32 and is narrower than that of the O2(a1Δg) fragment, consistent with distributions reported by O'Keeffe et al. at longer dissociation wavelengths ( J. Chem. Phys. 2002, 117, 8705-8709). At smaller radii in the 2D-REMPI spectrum, there is additional signal assigned to v = 1-4 of O2(b1Σg+), with rotational distributions similar to v = 0. The vibrational distribution of the O2(b1Σg+) fragment peaks at v = 0, with populations monotonically decreasing with increasing vibrational state. Ion image angular distributions of the O2(b1Σg+) fragment and the corresponding anisotropy parameters are also reported.

Abstract:Observations from the Odin/Sub-Millimetre Radiometer (SMR) instrument have been assimilated into the DIAMOND model (Dynamic Isentropic Assimilation Model for OdiN Data), in order to estimate the chemical ozone (O$_{3}$) loss in the stratosphere. This data assimilation technique is described in Sagi and Murtagh (2016), in which it was used to study the inter-annual variability in ozone depletion during the entire Odin operational time and in both hemispheres. Our study focuses on the Arctic region, where two O$_{3}$ destruction mechanisms play an important role, involving halogen and nitrogen chemical families (i.e. NOx = NO and NO$_{2}$), respectively. The temporal evolution and geographical distribution of (O$_{3}$) loss in the low and middle stratosphere have been investigated between 2002 and 2013. For the first time, this has been done based on the study of a series of winter-spring seasons over more than a decade, spanning very different dynamical conditions. The chemical mechanisms involved in O$_{3}$ depletion are very sensitive to thermal conditions and dynamical activity, which are extremely variable in the Arctic stratosphere. We have focused our analysis on particularly cold and warm winters, in order to study the influence this has on ozone loss. The winter 2010/11 is considered as an example for cold conditions. This case, which has been the subject of many studies, was characterised by a very stable vortex associated with particularly low temperatures, which led to an important halogen-induced O$_{3}$ loss occurring inside the vortex in the lower stratosphere. We found a loss of 2.1 ppmv at an altitude of 450K in the end of March 2011, which corresponds to the largest ozone depletion in the Northern Hemisphere observed during the last decade. Ultraviolet Excitation of M-O2 (M = Phenalenone, Fluorenone, Pyridine, & Acridine) Complexes Resulting in 1O2

Abstract:In our experiment, a trace amount of an organic molecule (M = 1H-phenalen-1-one, 9-fluorenone, pyridine, or acridine) was seeded into a gas mix consisting of 3% O2 with a rare gas buffer (He or Ar) and then supersonically expanded. We excited the resulting molecular beam with ultraviolet light at either 355 nm (1H-phenalen-1-one, 9-fluorenone, or acridine) or 266 nm (pyridine) and used resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy to probe for the formation of O2 in the a-1Δg state, 1O2. For all systems, the REMPI spectra demonstrate that ultraviolet excitation results in the formation of 1O2 and the oxygen product is confirmed to be in the ground vibrational state and with an effective rotational temperature below 80 K. We then recorded the velocity map ion image of the 1O2 product. From the ion images, we determined the center-of-mass translational energy distribution, P(ET), assuming photodissociation of a bimolecular M-O2 complex. We also report results from electronic structure calculations that allow for a determination of the M-O2 ground state binding energy. We use the complex binding energy, the energy to form 1O2, and the adiabatic triplet energy for each organic molecule to determine the available energy following photodissociation. For dissociation of a bimolecular complex, this available energy may be partitioned into either center-of-mass recoil or internal degrees of freedom of the organic moiety. We use the available energy to generate a Prior distribution, which predicts statistical energy partitioning during dissociation. For low available energies, less than 0.2 eV, we find that the statistical prediction is in reasonable agreement with the experimental observations. However, at higher available energies, the experimental distribution is biased to lower center-of-mass kinetic energies compared with the statistical prediction, which suggests the complex undergoes vibrational predissociation.

Abstract:We studied quantitatively the photochemistry of solid O3 and O2 films at 193 nm and 22 K with infrared spectroscopy and microgravimetry. Photolysis of pure ozone destroyed O3, but a small amount of ozone remained in the film at high fluence. Photolysis of pure O2 produced O3 in an amount that increased with photon fluence to a stationary level. For both O2 and O3 films, the O3:O2 ratio at saturation is 0.03, nearly 10-30 times larger than those obtained in gas phase photolysis. This enhancement is attributed to the increased photodissociation of O2 due to photoabsorption by O2 dimers, a process significant at solid state densities. We obtain initial quantum yield for ozone synthesis from solid oxygen, {\Phi} (O3) = 0.18 and for destruction of ozone and oxygen in their parent solids, {\Phi} (- O3) = 1.7 and {\Phi} (-O2) = 0.28. Combined with known photoabsorption cross sections, we estimate probabilities for germinate recombination of 0.15 for O3 fragments and 0.90 for oxygen atoms from O2 dissociation. Using a two-parameter kinetic model, we deduce the average probabilities for the reaction of an O atom with O2 and O3 to be 0.10 and 1, respectively. These probabilities are the same for both O2 and O3 films, even though the distribution of kinetic and internal energy of the photofragments is very different in both cases. This finding suggests efficient energy relaxation of photofragments in the solid occur prior to their reactions with other species.
Dissociative electron attachment and electron-impact resonant dissociation of vibrationally excited O2 molecules

Abstract:State-by-state cross sections for dissociative electron attachment and electron-impact dissociation for molecular oxygen are computed using ab initio resonance curves calculated with the R-matrix method. When O2 is in its vibrational ground state, the main contribution for both processes comes from the $^2\Pi_u$ resonance state of $O_2^-$ but with a significant contribution from the $^4\Sigma$ resonant state. Vibrational excitation leads to an increased contribution from the low-lying $^2\Pi_{g}$ resonance, greatly increased cross sections for both processes, and the threshold moving to lower energies. These results provide important input for models of O2-containing plasmas in nonequilibrium conditions.

Deciphering the Influence of Ground-State Distributions on the Calculation of Photolysis Observables

Abstract:Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics offers a powerful tool for studying the photochemistry of molecular systems. Key to any nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulation is the definition of its initial conditions, ideally representing the initial molecular quantum state of the system of interest. In this work, we provide a detailed analysis of how initial conditions may influence the calculation of experimental observables by focusing on the photochemistry of methylhydroperoxide, the simplest and most abundant organic peroxide in our atmosphere. We investigate the outcome of trajectory surface hopping simulations for distinct sets of initial conditions sampled from different approximate quantum distributions, namely harmonic Wigner functions and ab initio molecular dynamics using a quantum thermostat. Calculating photoabsorption cross-sections, quantum yields, and translational kinetic energy maps from the results of these simulations reveals the significant effect of the initial conditions, in particular when low-frequency (~ a few hundred cm-1) normal modes are connected to the photophysics of the molecule. Overall, our results indicate that sampling initial conditions from ab initio molecular dynamics using a quantum thermostat is preferable for flexible molecules with photoactive low-frequency modes. From a photochemical perspective, our nonadiabatic dynamics simulations offer an explanation for a low-energy tail observed at high excitation energy in the translational kinetic energy map of methylhydroperoxide.

Abstract:Current knowledge of the chemistry of the stratosphere is reviewed using measurements from the Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy (ATMOS) experiment to test the accuracy of our treatment of processes at mid-latitudes, and results from the Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment (AAOE) to examine our understanding of processes for the polar environment. It is shown that, except for some difficulties with N 2 O 5 and possibly ClNO 3 , gas phase models for nitrogen and chlorine species at 30°N in spring are in excellent agreement with the data from ATMOS. Heterogeneous processes may have an influence on the concentrations of NO 2 , N 2 O 5 , HNO 3 , and ClNO 3 for the lower stratosphere at 48°S in fall. Comparison of model and observed concentrations of O 3 indicate good agreement at 30°N, with less satisfactory results at 48°S. The discrepancy between the loss rate of O 3 observed over the course of the AAOE mission in 1987 and loss rates calculated using measured concentrations of ClO and BrO is found to be even larger than that reported by Anderson et al. (1989, J. geophys. Res. 94 , 11480). There appear to be loss processes for removal of O 3 additional to the HOC1 mechanism proposed by Solomon et al. (1986, Nature 321 , 755), the ClO-BrO scheme favored by McElroy et al. (1986, Nature 321 , 759), and the ClO dimer mechanism introduced by Molina and Molina (1987, J. phys. Chem. 91 , 433). There is little doubt that industrial halocarbons have a significant impact on stratospheric O 3 . Controls on emissions more stringent than those defined by the Montreal Protocol will be required if the Antarctic Ozone Hole is not to persist as a permanent feature of the stratosphere.
