Abstract:Based on the modeling of error ellipses andεerror bands,we present a model for the Et field which includes REM field and the extremum field,where Et is the DEM terrain representation error. Then,a construction method of Et field is established.Taking the terrain of plain river network,lo-ess hill and Qinling mountains as test data,we analyze the basic characteristics of the Et field by a comparative analysis method.Experimental results show Experimental results show the conclusions as follows:(1 )the Et field could reflect the spatial distribution of DEM terrain representation error intu-itively and accurately and deserves to research.(2)Et is closely related to the landform complexity of the area presented by DEM and presents significant spatial structure distribution characteristics. Meanwhile,RMS of Et shows a feature of the curve with the resolution of DEM increasing.(3 )As the unoptimistic accuracy of existing RMS estimation models of Et,the quantitative simulation of the regional topographic complexity should be completed scientifically and accurately at first to achieve the high-accuracy RMS estimation of Et.

Abstract:Many freely available global or quasi-global digital elevation model (DEM) datasets, including Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) World 3 Dimensions (3D) 30 m DEM (AW3D30 DEM), Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer DEM (ASTER DEM), Shuttle Radar Topography Mission DEM (SRTM DEM), Multiple-Error-Removed-Improved-Terrain DEM (MERIT DEM), and TerraSAR-X add-on for Digital Elevation Measurement (TanDEM-X) DEM (TanDEM-X DEM), are extremely useful products for many applications, so it is necessary to make a reasonable analysis of the quality of these DEMs. The quality of these DEMs is affected by both horizontal and vertical errors. However, most related researches have paid little attention to the effects of horizontal errors on the vertical accuracy of DEMs. Herein, after analysing the horizontal errors caused in the data acquisition process from optical stereo pairs and interferometry, experiments were proposed to assess the horizontal errors in DEMs. Then, we used the high accuracy digital surface model (DSM) of the Changsha area generated from the ZiYuan-3 triplet stereos to investigate the impact of horizontal errors on the accuracy of the five freely available DEMs. The subpixel level horizontal errors of the five DEMs were calculated, showing that the TanDEM-X DEM has systematic offsets and the other four DEMs have strip-like geometric errors. All the DEMs, except ASTER DEM, attained an accuracy increase of approximately 10% after the horizontal errors were removed. In mountainous areas, correcting the horizontal errors could eliminate the elevation errors caused by the imaging geometry of the optical camera and radar system. Generally, AW3D30 DEM has the best performance in terms of overall elevation accuracy and geometric accuracy after eliminating horizontal errors, and so it can have wide-ranging applications. These findings demonstrate the importance of removing horizontal errors to improve the elevation accuracy in practical applications using these global freely available DEMs.

Abstract:As one of the most important variables of topography, the quality of extracting slope length has a serious effect on soil and water conservation, soil erosion and environmental assessment studies. Based on the principle of data independent DEM interpretation analysis method, this paper quantitatively studies the error spatial distribution of slope length which is extracted from grid-based Digital Elevation Model. The result shows that the error of the direct calculation algorithm, which is widely used, is distributed mainly within valley area, and in the catchment area, the result of this algorithm is relatively satisfied. ©2010 IEEE.

DEM-based topographic change detection considering the spatial distribution of errors

Abstract:Digital Elevation Model (DEM) errors tend to be spatially correlated, inevitably affecting DEM-based topographic change detection. Traditional topographic change detection methods often ignore the spatial distribution of the DEM error. This paper aims to develop a workflow that considers the spatial autocorrelation of the error in topographic change detection. Firstly, the DEM of Difference (DoD) is obtained from two-period DEMs, and the Monte Carlo method is employed to evaluate the Spatially Distributed Errors (SDE) in DEMs. Secondly, DoD errors are calculated by propagation based on spatially distributed DEM errors. At the same time, its spatial distribution is quantified using the semi-variance function. Finally, topographic changes (erosion, deposition, and net changes) are calculated based on the spatial distribution analysis and significance detection. The results in two small catchments indicate that DEM errors are spatially correlated, increasing the volume calculation errors. However, using Standard Deviation of Errors (SDE) instead of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) can effectively reduce the sensitivity of the detection results in the significance threshold. When the significance threshold increases from 68% to 95%, the observations loss using the spatially distributed error is 4.67% −6.92% lower than that using the RMSE. The level of detection has little impact on the net topographic change and significantly influences gross erosion and deposition. In particular, the use of level of detection can effectively reduce the misclassification of erosion or deposition in stable topography areas. The proposed method can be effectively utilized in various applications like surface deformation monitoring, erosion monitoring, and sediment transport assessment.

Abstract:This study investigates the accuracy analysis of the digital elevation model (DEM) with respect to the following two major factors that strongly affect the interpolated accuracy: (1) spatial resolution of a DEM and (2) terrain slope. Unlike existing studies based mainly on a simulation approach, this research first provides an analytical approach in order to build the relationship between the interpolated DEM accuracy and its influencing factors. The bi-linear interpolation model was adopted to produce this analytic model formalized as inequalities. Then, our analytic models were verified and further rectified by means of experimental studies in order to derive a practical formula for estimating the DEM accuracy together with an optimization model for calculating the required resolution when a prescribed upper bound to the DEM accuracy is given. Moreover, this analytic approach can cope with either a grid-based DEM or a randomly scattered scenario whose efficacies have been validated by the experiments using both synthetic and realistic data sets. In particular, these findings first establish the rules for directly correlating the horizontal resolution of DEM data with vertical accuracy.

Abstract:Spaceborne laser altimetry technology assists global digital elevation models (GDEMs) to improve the accuracy of elevation data due to its highly accurate range and wide coverage. Compared to the previous laser altimeter systems used for Earth observation, Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat-2) has a sensitivity for photon detection that can provide more accurate and denser surface elevation observations. This article proposed a DEM correction model using ICESat-2 data. The model used the altimetric data to verify the DEM elevation errors in ICESat-2 coverage areas first. Then, an attribute set was constructed to evaluate the error sources of the global-scale DEM. The evaluations of the error sources include the location/positioning of the platform, atmospheric conditions, topographic relief, land cover, heterologous infill data, and so on. Finally, a regression model was constructed by the attribute set and the DEM elevation errors within ICESat-2 coverage areas, in order to correct the DEM in areas without ICESat-2. In the validation experiments, this study conducted elevation correction experiments using the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) GDEM and the shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) in three regions around the world and applied the airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data in each region to verify the corrected results. The results showed that the proposed model was suitable for the elevation correction of global-scale DEMs and can be applied to more than 90% of global land, i.e., land areas with a slope <25(degrees) . The accuracy improvement ratios of the corrected GDEM were 17.89%-33.33% across the different types of topography, and the accuracy improvement ratios of the corrected SRTM were 27.77%-44.64% across different types of topography.

Abstract:Terrain is one of the most common scene in nature. Any visual simulation is inseparable from terrain modeling. At present there are many 3D terrain generation methods. Among them, 3D terrain generation based on DEM has high precision, but the DEM data is expensive. Other ways to generate the terrain model with actual geographical features exist defects. This paper introduced the Linearization algorithm of Shape from Shading to solve the terrain height. Based on the low cost digital hill-shading map, the 3D terrain with actual geographical features was generated. The experiments showed that the method worked well and the result can satisfy the verisimilitude on vision. This paper also analyzed the experimental data in detail, and pointed out the research direction in the future.
RESEARCH ON A CORRECTION METHOD TO EXISTING GRID-BASED DEM

Abstract:The existing grid-based DEM has several disadvantages in representing the features of real terrain s urface, such as peak clipping, channel filling, etc. And abrupt changes in elevation cannot be handled easily and precisely. The inherent size of grid mesh affects the DEM computing, analysis and results. Through the discussion of DEM terrain distortion, the representative types of distortion were analyzed and the possible reasons of distortion were given in this paper. A brief review of the existing DEM data structures was showed and a technique for correcting the existing grid-based DEM was presented to try to solve the problem mentioned above and improve the precision of the terrain surface represented by the DEM. The method developed a new and simple data structure of DEM. It is based on the raster structure and integrated terrain features to the grid cell of existing DEM. Experiment was also made to test the results of correction method.

Abstract:DEM, which becomes a major component of geographic information processing in earth and engineering sciences, has been studied in the GIS literature for a long time. We use DEM to represent the terrain in GIS. The more data are available, the better representations of a terrain can be built. But not all tasks in the framework of a given application necessarily require the same accuracy, and even a single task may need different levels of accuracy in different areas of the domain. Multiresolution models, such as LOD, offer the possibility of representing and analyzing a terrain at a range of different levels of detail. In this paper, some key issues in multiresolution DEM model are studied. Three main models are focused on Hierarchical TIN(HTIN), multiresolution terrain model based Delaunay and Hierarchical Dynamic Simplification. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are analyzed. The technology of tile to tile edge match is studied to maintain the consistency between adjacent edges and tile edges in HTIN model. And the Hypergraph based Objected oriented Model(HOOM) is presented to divide and code spatial area and describe the terrain feature in adding and deleting points based on Delaunay rule retriangulating. The conclusions have been drawn in the end.
Error analysis of DEM derived from airborne single-pass interferometric SAR data.

Abstract:The main objective of this paper is to examine and evaluate the performance of the airborne SAR system through interferometric processing and error analysis. Firstly, the paper describes how high-precision DEMs are derived from the airborne dual-antenna InSAR data. Based on airborne dual-antenna InSAR bore-sight model, this paper summarizes the main factors which influence the accuracy of DEM in data processing, and analyses the error of those factors. Then, the POS/AV510 system parameters are used for analyzing the quantitative relationship between the platform height, baseline length, baseline angle, look angle and DEM error. The experimental data used is airborne dual-antenna X-band InSAR data, and the measured GCPs are used to validate the accuracy of DEM. Evaluation results in terms of the standard deviation (SD) and the average mean error (AME) are derived by comparing the reconstructed InSAR DEM with the reference GCPs. The AME of the DEM is up to 1.7628 m. The SD of the DEM are up to±1.0858 m. © 2011 IEEE.
Effect Of Horizontal Resolution On Dem Terrain Representation Error: A Case Study In The Loess Hill-Gully Areas Of China

Abstract:DEM terrain representation error (Et) has been commonly regarded as a key factor for impacting the accuracy in deriving terrain features. This paper focuses mainly on the simulation of Et at global level in China Loess Plateau Area. A comparative multi-resolution approach is used as the major methodology in this research. A series of experiments show that it is possible to simulate how the DEM terrain representation error changes as the grid resolution using the regression statistic. This model which is aimed at DEM based on 1:10000 scale relief map can be represented as following exponential equation ln(RMSE Et) = 0.8619* ln(R) - 0.9939, where R denotes the DEM resolution(m). The results could offer fundamentals and methods to people on their work to research the impact of DEM resolution on RMSE of DEM.
An Adaptive Terrain-Dependent Method for SRTM DEM Correction over Mountainous Areas.

Abstract:This paper presents a terrain-related method to simultaneously correct the global error trends and local linear/nonlinear terrain-related errors of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM), which have not been focused in most of the previous methods. To meet this goal, an adaptive strategy for modelling the SRTM DEM errors is first proposed, especially over mountainous areas, based on the Bayesian information criterion. Then, the M-estimator, instead of the ordinary least squares solver, is utilized to estimate the model parameters of the constructed model to improve the estimation robustness. The proposed method was tested over the Zhangjiajie areas of China, where the ground surface terrain varies from plains to steep mountains. The results show that the errors of the SRTM DEM over the region of interest decrease from 10.1 m to approximately 8.1 m after correction with the proposed method, indicating an improvement of approximately 20%. In addition, compared with two existing and common methods that can respectively correct the global error trends and local linear terrain-related errors of the SRTM DEM, the accuracy of the corrected SRTM DEM improves by approximately 29% and 27.9% over mountainous areas with slopes larger than 20° when the proposed method is used. Moreover, the proposed method will be beneficial to the correction of other airborne or spaceborne DEM products, especially over mountainous areas.

Abstract:The “M” in digital elevation models (DEM) stands for model, which literally means “a schematic description of a system, theory, or phenomenon that accounts for its known or inferred properties and may be used for further study of its characteristics.” A DEM fulfills the requirement of “a schematic description” of terrain. However, how to make it account for the “known or inferred properties” warrants further scrutiny. This article outlines three properties of terrain and examines their four implications to DEM generation. The three properties are as follows: (1) each terrain point has a single, fixed elevation; (2) terrain points have an order and sequence that is determined by their elevations; and (3) terrain has skeletons. The four implications to DEM generation methods are as follows: (1) a method must be a bijection; (2) a method must be an isomorphism in order to preserve elevation sequence; (3) a method must guarantee that the vertical error at any point, not just checkpoints, is acceptable in order to assure the vertical accuracy of a DEM; and (4) a method must involve generalization if terrain skeletons are to be preserved. These implications are discussed in the context of light detection and ranging-derived DEMs. Generalization is highlighted as the top priority for future research.

Abstract:Digital elevation model(DEM) and terrain analysis based on DEM is scale-dependant.With the view of geoscience analysis and modeling,the paper mainly discusses and effect of terrain analysis based on grid DEM.! Firstly,the paper outlines five common uses of the term scale within DEM and terrain analysis which are geographical scale,sampling scale,DEM structure scale,analysis and cartographic scale.The geographical means the spatial extent of the DEM or the area of coverage;the sampling refers to sampling intervals in DEM data collection;the DEM structure refers to the resolution of DEM which includes DEM horizontal resolution and vertical resolution;the analysis refers to the analysis extent of local windows including window size and threshold value;and the cartographic which is used for map reflects the ration between the measurements on a map and the actual measurement on the ground. Secondly,the paper's focus is put on the effect of terrain analysis based on DEM.In this section,the uncertainty of DEM and terrain analysis caused by the above scales is classified into single effect,cross effect and boundary effect.One area of terrain analysis that has been largely ignored is the effect of variability of terrain within the bounds of single grid cell that is referred to the heterogeneity effect of DEM grid size in the paper.We pointed out those and discussed the effect on terrain analysis.At the end of this section,the threshold which can be used to indicate the effective extend of terrain attributes is discussed. It is known that the existing DEM with fixed resolution does not always meet the requirement of application.This means that one can deduct more terrain models from a fixed resolution DEM.In fact,scaling model can realize the terrain information allocation and aggregation in terrain analysis based on DEM.In this paper,three scaling models including deduce model,scale inversion model and multi-scale terrain analysis model are discussed.
Accuracy of Difference Associated with Grid Digital Elevation Model

Abstract:Difference is the key method for deriving topographic parameters from grid digital elevation model (DEM). Its accuracy is the vital factor affecting the accuracy of topographic parameters. The research validated that the accuracy of difference is associated with topographic surface complexity, difference algorithm, DEM data accuracy and DEM data property including grid orientation, grid size, grid origin and data precision. The high accuracy results of difference could not derived from small grid size DEM if there are DEM data errors. There is one and only suitability DEM grid size which the difference calculation has the least RMSE (root mean square error). The research further perfects the theory and method of accuracy analysis in digital terrain analysis.
Spacial Distribution Research of SRTM's Elevation Error in Chaohu Basin

Abstract:Digital Elevation Model(DEM) was the essential data for research on terrain and SRTM data were the public free access dataset with 90m resolution.The thesis treated the state 1∶50000 DEM as reference contrastive data and the Chaohu basin as the research area.The SRTM,DEM′s elevation accuracy were researched in this paper,using elevation RMSE model and Cut/Fill per square meter.In addition,analyzed the spacial distribution of the elevation error.The results showed that the SRTM,DEM′s mean square error of height and cut/fill per square meter present obvious spacial distribution along with geomorphic type changed.It was mainly caused that SRTM,DEM′s pixel was low precision.Among the 33 sample area in the research area,most of the result was higher than level 2 accuracy evaluation standard.It was thus clear that the SRTM,DEM had high precision in general.

Abstract:Ground-based interferometric technology plays an important role in the terrain mapping sphere because it is characterized by short observation intervals, a flexible operation environment, and high data precision. Ground-based interferometric synthetic aperture radar (GB-InSAR) has a wide beam, a scene breadth comparative to the slant range, and a large downwards-looking angle. The observation scenes always show the type of slope terrain with various gradients and slope orientations. These particularities cause the invalidation of the typical terrain generation method and produce poor precision analysis results using typical values. This paper first proposes a three-dimensional-coordinate generation method based on the geolocation concept. Then, the models and analyses of the error sources and their propagations are reported. The method of calculating the correlation coefficient is meticulously discussed, and a system error distribution diagram is presented that considers the spatial distribution information of the viewing scene. The result can be adapted to different viewing scenes and encompasses the performance of the whole area, and it will help with baseline optimization. The digital elevation map (DEM) generated by GB-InSAR is compared with one produced by light detection and ranging (LiDAR). The error magnitude and the similarity of the distribution between theory and reality prove the correctness and effectiveness of the presented DEM generation method, the correlation coefficient estimation formula, and the system precision analysis method.
