Abstract:The selective CH bond oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbon is an interesting but challenging task, it is desirable to develop efficient heterogeneous non-noble metal catalyst for this reaction. Herein, two kinds of spinel (FeCoNiCrMn)3O4 high entropy oxides were fabricated via two different methods (i.e., c-FeCoNiCrMn, prepared by a co-precipitation method, and m-FeCoNiCrMn, prepared by physically mixing method). Different from traditional environmentally-unfriendly Co/Mn/Br system, the prepared catalysts were employed for the selective CH bond oxidation of p-chlorotoluene to p-chlorobenzaldehyde in a green approach. Compared to m-FeCoNiCrMn, c-FeCoNiCrMn have smaller particles size and larger specific surface area, which were related to the enhanced catalytic activity. More importantly, characterization results disclosed that abundant oxygen vacancies were formed over c-FeCoNiCrMn. Such a result facilitated the adsorption of p-chlorotoluene on the catalyst surface and promoted the formation of *ClPhCH2O intermediate as well as the desired p-chlorobenzaldehyde, as revealed by DFT (Density functional theory) calculations. Besides, scavenger tests and EPR (Electron paramagnetic resonance) results indicated that hydroxyl radical derived from H2O2 homolysis was the main active oxidative species for this reaction. This work revealed the role of oxygen vacancy in spinel high entropy oxide and also demonstrated its promising application for the selective CH bond oxidation in an environmentally-benign approach.

Abstract:Oxidative transformations of phenols have attracted significant attention of chemists due to their importance in biological process and organic synthesis. In contrast to the relatively well-developed oxygenation and coupling reactions of phenols, the highly efficient and selective oxidative ring cleavage of phenols is under-represented. This work describes a novel CuCl-catalyzed tandem homocoupling/skeletal rearrangement of phenols that realizes the cleavage of the phenol ring by using air or Ag2CO3 as the oxidant. Interestingly, simply changing the oxidant to K2S2O8 results in the oxidative coupling/cyclization of phenols to give dibenzofurans. These results set an important precedent of oxidant-controlled catalytic transformations of phenols.

Abstract:Optimizing lanthanide catalyst performance with organic ligands often encounters significant challenges, including susceptibility to water or oxygen and complex synthesis pathways. To address these issues, our research focuses on developing inorganic lanthanide clusters with enhanced stability and functionality. In this study, we introduce the [Sm6O(OH)8(H2O)24]I8(H2O)8 cluster (Sm-OC) as a sustainable and efficient catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of thiols under heating conditions. The Sm-OC catalyst demonstrated remarkable stability, outstanding recyclability, and excellent chemoselectivity across a diverse range of functional groups in 38 different tests. Notably, it enables efficient unsymmetrical disulfide synthesis and prevents the formation of over-oxidized by-products, highlighting its superior performance. This Sm-OC catalyst provides a practical and robust tool for the precise construction of versatile disulfides, thus establishing a template for the broader use of lanthanide clusters in organic synthesis.

Abstract:We report herein the synthesis of novel chiral S,N-heterobidentate thiourea-oxazoline ligands and their application to palladium-catalyzed enantioselective bis(methoxycarbonylation)s of terminal olefins under mild conditions. Abstract:We report herein a visible light sensitizer-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of thioethers, affording sulfoxides in good to excellent yields. The loading of the catalyst was as low as 0.1 mol%. The selectivity was excellent. Mechanism studies showed both singlet oxygen and superoxide radical anion were likely involved in this transformation.

Abstract:Selective regulation of chemical reactions is crucial in chemistry. Oxygen, as a key reagent in ubiquitous oxidative chemistry, exhibits great potential in regulating molecular assemblies, and more importantly, chemical reactions in molecular systems supported by metal surfaces. However, the unique catalytic performance and reaction mechanisms of oxygen species remain elusive, which are essential for understanding reaction selection and regulation. In this study, by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) imaging/manipulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we showed that the on-surface reaction pathways of terminal alkynes could be steered from C-C coupling to C-H activation with high selectivity by introducing O<sub>2</sub> into the molecular system. The catalytic performance and reaction mechanisms of oxygen species were explored in the C-H activation processes, and both molecular O<sub>2</sub> and atomic O could efficiently steer the reaction pathways. These results would provide a fundamental understanding of interfacial catalytic reaction processes.

Abstract:The palladium-catalyzed carbonylative ring-forming reactions of 2-iodothiophenol, and the corresponding substituted derivatives, with allenes and carbon monoxide are described. The reactions afford thiochroman-4-ones in good to excellent isolated yields with quite high regioselectivity. The catalytic heteroannulation may involve regioselective addition of the sulfur moiety of the reactants on the more positive end of the allene, arylpalladium formation, CO insertion, subsequent intramolecular cyclization, and then reductive elimination. The regioselectivity is probably governed by electronic effects.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds is a pivotal transformation in organic synthesis. Undoubtedly, achieving efficient and highly selective aerobic oxidation of methylarenes to benzaldehydes has been highly challenging due to the propensity of benzaldehyde to undergo overoxidation under typical aerobic conditions. Herein, we propose an innovative approach to address this issue by leveraging electrocatalytic processes, facilitated by ion-pair mediators [Ph3C]+[B(C6F5)4]-. By harnessing the power of electrochemistry, we successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of our strategy, which enables the selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds in benzylic molecules and toluene derivatives. Notably, our approach exhibited high efficiency, excellent selectivity, and compatibility with various functional groups, underscoring the broad applicability of our methodology.

Abstract:A facile oxidative annulation of cyclohexanones and 2-aminophenyl ketones that uses molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant is described. The reaction provides a direct approach to acridines, a structural motif for a large number of fluorescent sensors, functional materials, ligands, and pharmaceuticals. In the presence of a palladium catalyst, high regioselectivity is observed when using non-symmetric 3-substituted cyclohexanones. With the use of oxygen as the terminal redox moderator, the electron gap of the global redox condensation process is filled and the reaction efficiency is significantly promoted. This protocol possesses many advantages such as using nonhazardous oxidant and readily available starting materials, high regioselectivity, and water as the only by-product.
Unusual Regio‐ and Chemoselectivity in Oxidation of Pyrroles and Indoles Enabled by a Thianthrenium Salt Intermediate

Abstract:A dearomative oxidation of pyrroles to Δ3-pyrrol-2-ones is described, which employs a sulfoxide as oxidant, in conjunction with a carboxylic acid anhydride and a Brønsted acid additive. 3-Substituted pyrroles undergo regioselective oxidation to give the product isomer in which oxygen has been introduced at the more sterically hindered position. This counterintuitive regioselectivity is rationalized by a proposed mechanism that proceeds by initial thianthrenium introduction at the less-hindered pyrrole α-position, followed by distal attack of an oxygen nucleophile and subsequent elimination of thianthrene. Furthermore, the same reaction conditions are also able to effect a chemoselective oxidation of indoles to indolin-3-ones and additionally of indolin-3-ones to 2-hydroxyindolin-3-ones. Here again, the observed regio- and chemoselectivities are rationalized through the intermediacy of a thianthrenium salt.

Abstract:Treatment Of [Cp(2)Ln(mu-Me)](2) with 2 equiv of elemental sulfur in toluene at room temperature leads to the formation of the methylthiolate complexes [CP(2)Ln(mu-SMe)](2) [Ln = Yb (1a), Y (1b), Er (1c), Dy (1d)] in good yields. While reaction Of Cp2Y(Bu-n) with elemental sulfur in 1: 1 stoichiometric ratio under the same conditions yields [(CP2Y)(2)(mu(3)-S)(THF)](2) (2a) as the metal-containing product with the extrusion of (BUSBu)-B-n-Bu-n and (BuSSBu)-Bu-n-Bu-n, the corresponding insertion intermediate [CP2Y(mu-(SBU)-B-n)](2) (1e) could be isolated only by decreasing the relative amount Of S-8 under more mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, [CP2Yb(mu-SEt)](2) reacts with 2 equiv of sulfur to give a mixture of [(CP2Yb)(2)(mu(3)-S)(THF)](2) (2b) and [CP2Yb(THF)](2)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-S-2) (3). 2b and 3 can also be prepared from the reaction of [CP2Yb(mu-Me)](2) with excess elemental sulfur in THF. All these results demonstrate that lanthanocene thiolate complexes are unstable in solution with S8, and the nature of the alkyl ligands and reaction conditions has a great influence on the final product structures from the reaction of lanthanocene alkyls with elemental sulfur and provides an easy access to trivalent lanthanocene thiolate, sulfide, and disulfide complexes as well as thioethers and organic disulfides. Complexes 1-3 were characterized by elemental analysis and IR and mass spectroscopies. The structures of complexes la, le, 2a, 2b, and 3 are also determined through X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Direct Observation of Morphological and Chemical Changes During the Oxidation of Model Inorganic Ligand-Capped Particles

Abstract:Functionalization and volatilization are competing reactions during the oxidation of carbonaceous materials and are important processes in many different areas of science and technology. Here we present a combined ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) and grazing incidence X-ray scattering (GIXS) investigation of the oxidation of oleic acid ligands surrounding NaYF4 nanoparticles (NPs) deposited onto SiOx/Si substrates. While APXPS monitors the evolution of the oxidation products, GIXS provides insight into the morphology of the ligands and particles before and after the oxidation. Our investigation shows that the oxidation of the oleic acid ligands proceeds at O2 partial pressures of below 1 mbar in the presence of X-rays, with the oxidation eventually reaching a steady state in which mainly CHx and -COOH functional groups are observed. The scattering data reveal that the oxidation and volatilization reaction proceeds preferentially on the side of the particle facing the gas phase, leading to the formation of a chemically and morphologically asymmetric ligand layer. This comprehensive picture of the oxidation process could only be obtained by combining the X-ray scattering and APXPS data. The investigation presented here lays the foundation for further studies of the stability of NP layers in the presence of reactive trace gasses and ionizing radiation, and for other nanoscale systems where chemical and morphological changes happen simultaneously and cannot be understood in isolation.

Abstract:The selectivity control toward aldehyde in the aromatic alcohol oxidation remains a grand challenge using molecular oxygen under mild conditions. In this work, we designed and synthesized Pt/PCN-224(M) composites by integration of Pt nanocrystals and porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), PCN-224(M). The composites exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the photo-oxidation of aromatic alcohols by 1 atm O2 at ambient temperature, based on a synergetic photothermal effect and singlet oxygen production. Additionally, in opposition to the function of the Schottky junction, injection of hot electrons from plasmonic Pt into PCN-224(M) would lower the electron density of the Pt surface, which thus is tailorable for the optimized catalytic performance via the competition between the Schottky junction and the plasmonic effect by altering the light intensity. To the best of our knowledge, this is not only an unprecedented report on singlet oxygen-engaged selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes but also the first report on photothermal effect of MOFs.

Abstract:Thioacetals are important compounds because they can be considered as both useful protecting groups of carbonyl compounds in the synthesis of multi-functional complex molecules and acyl carbanion equivalents in C-C bond forming reactions. Since many reactions have been developed to prepare oximes from non carbonyl compounds, to lead to a novel and efficient method for thioacetal preparation, transthioacetalization of oximes has received more and more attention. Unfortunately, the transformation usually suffers from the use of harmful, odorous thiols which can lead to serious safety and environment problems. From the green chemistry point of view, an efficient and odorless transthioacetalization of oximes involving an environment friendly reagent is of great importance and necessity. In this work, using odorless and stable alpha-oxo ketene dithioacetals 1 as thiol equivalents, the thioacetalization reaction of oximes 2 were studied. In the reaction system of MeCOCl-EtOH (95%) or 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA)-H2O, the thioacetalization reaction were carried out in reflux temperature. It is noteworthy that the odor of thiols can not be perceived during either the reaction or workup.

Abstract:The formation of aldehydes and ketones via selective oxidation of alcohols is an essential transformation in organic synthesis. However, the usually harsh reaction conditions using toxic metal catalysts or corrosive reagents lead to undesired side products and wastes. Environmentally friendly and mild reaction conditions using metal-free catalysts remain a huge challenge. Herein, we report the use of a thiophene-based covalent triazine framework (CTF) as pure organic and visible-light-active photocatalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols at room temperature. Molecular oxygen was activated as a clean and selective oxidant. The high selectivity and efficiency of the pure organic photocatalyst could be demonstrated and were comparable to those of the state-of-art metal or nonmetal catalytic systems reported.
