Abstract:The second-order nonlinear optical effect is the foundation of realizing optical wavelength regulation and conversion technology. In recent decades, it was shown that improved organic nonlinear optical materials could deliver performance as good as inorganic materials. which attracts one to revisit the material group due to their excellent nonlinear optical properties and processability toward modern flexible devices. Traditional high-performance organic nonlinear optical materials rely on D--A chromophores dispersed in apolar polymer systems. Usually, a strong electric field was utilized for pooling the D--A chromophore, which requires complicated processing and faces severe polarization relaxation issues. Here we provide an unprecedented enhancement mechanism for nonlinear properties. We employ fluidic ferroelectric nematics as a spontaneous polarization background that acts as an internal electric field to polarize doped D--A chromophores. We reveal that the synergetic effect of polarization enhancement results in a dramatic increase of second harmonic generation by about two orders of magnitude compared to the undoped materials.
