Abstract:This paper proposes estimators for the parameters of an explosive fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. The asymptotic properties for the diffusion estimators are developed under the in-fill asymptotic scheme, while the asymptotic properties for the drift estimators are developed under the double asymptotic scheme for the full range of the Hurst parameter. The double asymptotic distribution of the estimator of the persistency parameter explicitly depends on the initial condition. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimators, and the asymptotic distributions provide a good approximation in finite samples. An empirical application is presented to demonstrate the model's usefulness and the practical value of the asymptotic theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the linear fractional self-attracting diffusion driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index 1/2<H<1, which is analogous to the linear self-attracting diffusion. For 1-dimensional process we study its convergence and the corresponding weighted local time. For 2-dimensional process, as a related problem, we show that the renormalized self-intersection local time exists in L^2 if $\frac12<H<\frac3{4}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we will first give the numerical simulation of the sub-fractional Brownian motion through the relation of fractional Brownian motion instead of its representation of random walk. In order to verify the rationality of this simulation, we propose a practical estimator associated with the LSE of the drift parameter of mixed sub-fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, and illustrate the asymptotical properties according to our method of simulation when the Hurst parameter H>1/2 .

Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of estimating the parameters for fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes from discrete observations when the Hurst parameter H is known. Both the drift and the diffusion coefficient estimators of discrete form are obtained based on approximating integrals via Riemann sums with Hurst parameter H∈(1/2,3/4). By adapting the stochastic integral representation to the fractional Brownian motion, these two estimators can be efficiently computed by the use of computer software. Numerical examples are presented to examine the performance of our method. An application to real data is also presented to show how to apply this method in practice.

Abstract:Fractional diffusion equations have been widely used to accurately describe anomalous solute transport in complex media. This paper proposes a local meshless method named the generalized finite difference method (GFDM), to solve a class of multidimensional space fractional diffusion equations (SFDEs) in a finite domain. In the GFDM, the spatial derivative terms are expressed as linear combinations of neighboring-node values with different weighting coefficients using the moving least-square approximation. An explicit formula for the SFDE is then obtained. The numerical solution is achieved by solving a sparse linear system. Four numerical examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Numerical analysis indicates that the relative errors of prediction results are stable and less than 1% (0.001–1%). The method can also be applied for irregular grids with acceptable accuracy.

Abstract:We develop and analyze a numerical method for stochastic time-fractional diffusion driven by additive fractionally integrated Gaussian noise. The model involves two nonlocal terms in time, i.e., a Caputo fractional derivative of order $\alpha\in(0,1)$, and fractionally integrated Gaussian noise (with a Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of order $\gamma \in[0,1]$ in the front). The numerical scheme approximates the model in space by the Galerkin method with continuous piecewise linear finite elements and in time by the classical Grünwald-Letnikov method, and the noise by the $L^2$-projection. Sharp strong and weak convergence rates are established, using suitable nonsmooth data error estimates for the deterministic counterpart. Numerical results are presented to support the theoretical findings.

The process is an analogue of the linear self-interacting diffusion (Cranston and Le Jan, Math. Ann. 303 (1995), 87-93). We introduce its large time behaviors, and the behavior presents a recursive convergence which is quite different from the asymptotic behavior of stochastic differential equations without interacting drifts. As a related question, we also consider the asymptotic behaviors of the least squares estimations of θ and ν .

Abstract:This paper discusses the fractional diffusion equation forced by a tempered fractional Gaussian noise. The fractional diffusion equation governs the probability density function of the subordinated killed Brownian motion. The tempered fractional Gaussian noise plays the role of fluctuating external source with the property of localization. We first establish the regularity of the infinite dimensional stochastic integration of the tempered fractional Brownian motion and then build the regularity of the mild solution of the fractional stochastic diffusion equation. The spectral Galerkin method is used for space approximation; after that the system is transformed into an equivalent form having better regularity than the original one in time. Then we use the semi-implicit Euler scheme to discretize the time derivative. In terms of the temporal-spatial error splitting technique, we obtain the error estimates of the fully discrete scheme in the sense of mean-squared $L^2$-norm. Extensive numerical experiments confirm the theoretical estimates.

Abstract:The diffusion process plays a crucial role in various fields, such as fluid dynamics, microorganisms, heat conduction and food processing. Since molecular diffusion usually takes place in complex materials and disordered media, there still exist many challenges in describing the diffusion process in the real world. Fractional calculus is a powerful tool for modelling complex physical processes due to its non-local property. This research generalises a fractional diffusion model by using the distributed-order operator in time and the Riesz fractional derivative in space. Moreover, variable diffusion coefficients are introduced to better capture the diffusion complexity. The fractional diffusion model is discretised by the finite element method in space. The approximation of the distributed-order operator is implemented by Simpson’s rule and the L2-1σ formula. A numerical example is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed numerical methods. Abstract:The standard diffusion processes are known to be obtained as the limits of appropriate random walks. These prelimiting random walks can be quite different however. The diffusion coefficient can be made responsible for the size of jumps or for the intensity of jumps. The "rough" diffusion limit does not feel the difference. The situation changes, if we model jump-type approximations via CTRW with non-exponential waiting times. If we make the diffusion coefficient responsible for the size of jumps and take waiting times from the domain of attraction of an $\alpha$-stable law with a constant intensity $\al$, then the standard scaling would lead in the limit of small jumps and large intensities to the most standard fractional diffusion equation. However, if we choose the CTRW approximations with fixed jump sizes and use the diffusion coefficient to distinguish intensities at different points, then we obtain in the limit the equations with variable position-dependent fractional derivatives. In this paper we build rigorously these approximations and prove their convergence to the corresponding fractional equations for the cases of multidimensional diffusions and more general Feller processes.

Abstract:This paper addresses the approximation of fractional harmonic maps. Besides a unit-length constraint, one has to tackle the difficulty of nonlocality. We establish weak compactness results for critical points of the fractional Dirichlet energy on unit-length vector fields. We devise and analyze numerical methods for the approximation of various partial differential equations related to fractional harmonic maps. The compactness results imply the convergence of numerical approximations. Numerical examples on spin chain dynamics and point defects are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract:A fractional diffusion equation based on Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives is solved exactly. The initial values are given as fractional integrals. The solution is obtained in terms of $H$-functions. It differs from the known solution of fractional diffusion equations based on fractional integrals. The solution of fractional diffusion based on a Riemann-Liouville fractional time derivative does not admit a probabilistic interpretation in contrast with fractional diffusion based on fractional integrals. While the fractional initial value problem is well defined and the solution finite at all times its values for $t\to 0$ are divergent.

Abstract:This work is devoted to investigating exact solutions of generalized nonlinear fractional diffusion equations with external force and absorption. We first investigate the nonlinear anomalous diffusion equations with one-fractional derivative and then multi-fractional ones. In both situations, we obtain the corresponding exact solution, its diffusive behavior, and the sufficient and necessary conditions for solutions satisfying the boundary condition W(±∞,t)=0 and the sharp initial condition W(x,0)=δ(x).

Abstract:Owing to the Rosenau argument in Physical Review A, 46 (1992), pag. 12-15, originally proposed to obtain a regularized version of the Chapman-Enskog expansion of hydrodynamics, we introduce a non-local linear kinetic equation which approximates a fractional diffusion equation. We then show that the solution to this approximation, apart of a rapidly vanishing in time perturbation, approaches the fundamental solution of the fractional diffusion (a Lévy stable law) at large times.

Abstract:Summary Thispaperestablishesadifferenceapproximationontime-spacefractionaladvectiondispersion equations. Based on the difference approximation an ideal numerical example has been solved, and the result is compared with the one of the rigorous time fractional advection-dispersionequation and the rigorous space fractional advection-dispersionequation respectively. The results show: when time fractional order parameter γ=1 or space fractional order parameter α=2, the numerical calculation result of the time-space fractional advection-dispersionequations is in accordance with that of the rigorous time fractional advection-dispersionequation or the rigorous space fractional advection-dispersion equation. The variation law of the result with parameter is also similar to them, that is when γ is smaller, diffusion is slower; when α is smaller, diffusion is faster. The simulation calculation for a practical example indicates that time-space fractional advection-dispersion equations can simulate the skewness and the tail of anomalous diffusion. This paper provides a efficient tool for the research of fractional advection-dispersion equations.

Abstract:Numerical solution and parameter estimation for a type of fractional diffusion equation are considered. Firstly, the symmetrical compact difference scheme is applied to solve the forward problem of the fractional diffusion equation. The stability and convergence of the symmetrical difference scheme are presented. Then, the Bayesian method is considered to estimate the unknown fractional order α of the fractional diffusion equation model. To validate the efficiency of the symmetrical numerical scheme and the estimation method, some simulation tests are considered. The simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of the compact difference scheme and show that the proposed estimation algorithm can provide effective statistical characteristics of the parameter.

Abstract:Fractional generalized Langevin equation with external force is used to model single-file diffusion. It is found that for external force that varies with power law the solution for such a fractional Langevin equation gives the correct short and long time behavior for the mean square displacement of single-file diffusion when appropriate choice of parameters associated with fractional generalized Langevin equation are used. By considering some special cases of the fractional generalized Langevin equation, a new class of closed analytic expressions for the mean square displacement of single-file diffusion can be obtained. The effective Fokker-Planck equation associated with single-file diffusion is briefly considered.

Abstract:A reaction-diffusion problem with a Caputo time derivative is considered. An integral discretization scheme on a graded mesh along with a decomposition of the exact solution is proposed. The truncation error estimate of the discretization scheme is derived by using the remainder formula of the linear interpolation and some inequality estimate techniques. It is proved that the scheme is second-order convergent by applying a difference analogue of Gronwall's inequality, which exhibits an enhancement in the convergence rate compared with the L1 schemes. Numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical result.

Abstract:The transition density of a diffusion process does not admit an explicit expression in general, which prevents the full maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) based on discretely observed sample paths. Ait-Sahalia [J. Finance 54 (1999) 1361–1395; Econometrica 70 (2002) 223–262] proposed asymptotic expansions to the transition densities of diffusion processes, which lead to an approximate maximum likelihood estimation (AMLE) for parameters. Built on Ait-Sahalia’s [Econometrica 70 (2002) 223–262; Ann. Statist. 36 (2008) 906–937] proposal and analysis on the AMLE, we establish the consistency and convergence rate of the AMLE, which reveal the roles played by the number of terms used in the asymptotic density expansions and the sampling interval between successive observations. We find conditions under which the AMLE has the same asymptotic distribution as that of the full MLE. A first order approximation to the Fisher information matrix is proposed.
