Abstract:Supercapacitors have been well focused on, due to the advantages of fast charging/discharging, high power density, long service time and safety. Electrode materials determine the performance of supercapacitors. Serving as a kind of battery-type materials, transition metal sulfides have been received more attentions for high redox activity and high specific capacity. Controllable synthesis of metal sulfides determines their microstructure and composition, which is the basis for developing new materials. Therefore, this review firstly introduces existing synthetic methods of transition metal sulfides, including hydrothermal/solvothermal method, template method, electrodeposition method, sol-gel method, co-precipitation method, exfoliation/intercalation method and solid state method. The preparation process, principle, advantages/shortages of each method and related examples are highlighted. Taking controllable synthesis as the main line, recent advances of heteroatom doped metal sulfides and their application in supercapacitors are introduced in the second section. According to the type of dopants, all doped metal sulfides are divided into two parts: nonmetal doped metal sulfides, including B, N, F, O, P and Se, and metal doped sulfides, including alkali metal, precious metal, rare earth metal and transition metal. The research progresses about materials preparation, structure feature and supercapacitance performance are summarized. At last, current issues and future prospects in the field of heteroatom doped metal sulfides are proposed. It is anticipated that the review will provide guiding ideas or strategies for developing high-performance metal sulfides electrode materials.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides are widely used in supercapacitor electrode materials and exhibit excellent performance because of their rich variety, low price, and high theoretical specific capacity. At present, the main methods to prepare transition metal sulfides include the hydrothermal method and the electrochemical method. In order to further improve their electrochemical performance, two aspects can be addressed. Firstly, by controllable synthesis of nanomaterials, porous structures and large surface areas can be achieved, thereby improving ion transport efficiency. Secondly, by combining transition metal sulfides with other energy storage materials, such as carbon materials and metal oxides, the synergy between different materials can be fully utilized. However, future research still needs to address some challenges. In order to guide further in-depth research, it is necessary to combine the current research-derived knowledge and propose a direction for future development of transition metal sulfide electrode materials.

Abstract:Supercapacitors play an important role in power systems since they are a key part of electrochemical energy storage devices. To assemble high-performance supercapacitors, it is crucial to discover and innovate high-capacitive electrode materials. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have received wide concerns as electrode materials for supercapacitors, not only because of their high pore volume and large surface area for ions and electrons insertion and transportation, but also due to the intrinsic metal active sites that possibly offer extra faradaic pseudocapacitance. Additionally, the abundant species of MOFs with various morphologies also feature advantages in enriching the structural diversity of electrodes. In this paper, we first report the latest research progress and demonstrate the feasibility of pure MOFs for directly constructing supercapacitor electrodes. Furthermore, different MOF derivatives, including porous carbons, transition metal oxides, metal hydroxides and MOF composites for supercapacitors, are summarized, and their electrochemical performances with corresponding energy storage mechanisms are presented in detail. Finally, the perspectives for MOF-based materials applied in supercapacitors are discussed, aiming to provide a guideline for further research based on these promising materials.

Abstract:Supercapacitors have attracted much attention due to their high-power density and long cycle life, making them a potential substitute for traditional batteries. The research on hydroxide fluorides as electrode materials for supercapacitors has been increasing. Hydroxide fluorides exhibit higher specific capacitance due to the redox reactions between transition metal elements in different oxidation states. However, their high resistance limits their rate performance and cycling stability, which hinders their large-scale application. This article summarizes the main synthesis methods of hydroxide fluorides, and by controlling the reaction conditions, hydroxide fluorides with different morphologies and structures can be obtained to meet various application requirements. In addition, considering the limitations of hydroxide fluorides, this article systematically introduces the main approaches to improving their electrode performance and summarizes the electrochemical characteristics and latest research progress of hydroxide fluorides.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are promising energy storage and conversion devices with high power densities. However, their low energy densities limit their practical application. The electrode is a key component that determines the performance of supercapacitors. As electrode materials, transition metal oxides/hydroxides usually exhibit high capacitance, leading to high energy densities. This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different metal oxides/hydroxides, in order to synthesize high-performance electrode materials. Two main strategies to enhance the supercapacitive performance are proposed: developing composites and nanostructured materials.

Abstract:The investigation of inexpensive, effective, environmentally friendly next-generation energy storage devices is an urgent task due to the discontinuities of new generation energy that hinder their further widely application. Among the multitudinous explored energy storage devices, supercapacitors have been regarded as the most potential energy storage systems thanks to their distinctive features of ultralong cycling lifespan, ultrafast charge/discharge process, and high power density compared with batteries and conventional capacitors. Nevertheless, the existing defect of low energy density has always been a bottleneck problem to their long-term development and widespread applications. Meanwhile, the electrodes are the core component in supercapacitors, determining the electrochemical performance directly. Consequently, transition metal oxides were chosen as the promoting materials to design and fabricate appropriately and rationally act as supercapacitor electrodes to harvest the outstanding electrochemical performance of both high energy and power density simultaneously. Here, we summarized the recent advances in transition metal oxides with different dimensions as electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors, including zero-dimensional nanostructures (nanospheres, nanocrystals, nanoparticles), one-dimensional nanostructures (nanorods, nanowires and nanotubes), two-dimensional nanostructures (nanoflakes, nanoplatelets), three-dimensional nanostructures (spherical structure, hollow structure, flower-like structure, honeycomb structure, mesoporous structure), and the corresponding supercapacitors electrochemical performance, expecting to make a thorough inquiry of the relationship between structure and property for highlighting the route to design and synthesis high-performance transition metal oxide-based supercapacitor electrodes.Graphical abstract

Abstract:As a novel energy storage system,supercapacitors with characteristics of long cycle-life and high rate charge discharge capability,can be applied in many fields.The performance of the electrode material is the most important factor affecting the nature of supercapacitor.MnO2 has advantages in price,environmental friendliness,and easy access.The energy storage mechanism of manganese dioxides electrode materials for supercapacitor was described,and the relationship between nano manganese dioxide microscopic structure and its electrochemical properties was analyzed.The recent developments of synthesis,doping modification,and compounding methods of manganese dioxide-based materials were reviewed from the angle of nanometer manganese dioxides preparation and its comprehensive modification.The main development directions of manganese dioxide-based electrodes for EC application were presented.

However, poor conductivity and cycling stability remains to be the major challenge for its widespread application. Various strategies have been developed for meeting the ever-increasing energy and power demands in supercapacitors. This Research News article aims to review recent progress in the development of mesoporous carbon incorporated metal oxide nanomaterials, especially metal oxide nanoparticles confined in ordered mesoporous carbon and 1D metal oxides coated with a layer of mesoporous carbon for high-performance supercapacitor applications. In addition, a recent trend in supercapacitor development hierarchical porous graphitic carbons (HPGC) combining macroporous cores, mesoporous walls, and micropores as an excellent support for metal oxides is also discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are both a series of crystalline porous materials. MOFs, COFs and their derivatives have attracted much attention in energy storage devices due to their highly ordered structures, large surface areas, tunable pore sizes and topologies, and well-defined redox-active porous skeletons. They must also have structural stability, an abundance of redox-active sites and high electronic conductivity for use in high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. We review the recent research progress on the design of MOFs and COFs, and their hybrids with conductive materials (e.g. conductive polymer, graphene and carbon nanotubes), and MOF- and COF-derived carbon materials. Their chemical and physical properties, capacitive performance and structure-property relationships are discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of MOF- and COF-based electrode materials are presented.

Abstract:Nowadays, supercapacitors become one of the most promising energy-storage systems owing to their high power density, fast charging–discharging rate, and long cyclic stability. Among many supercapacitor materials, nickel-based oxides are a class of promising candidates with high specific capacities. However, the research on these materials has demonstrated that there are some deficiencies that need to be improved, such as their low conductivity, volume shrinkage/expansion during the working process, and moderate cycle stability. It is of urgent to find a suitable method to solve these issues. In this review, we show that multifunctional structures, such as specific core–shell structures, complex formed with metal–organic frameworks, and three-dimensional micro–nanostructures, as well as multi-valence ion doping are practical techniques to boost the supercapacitor performance of these materials. We summarize some recent work related to this topic and emphasize the importance of the synergic effect and electronic doping on the electrochemical supercapacitance of the metal oxides, hoping to provide constructive significance for the future research and development on these materials.

Abstract:In the past decades, the energy consumption of nonrenewable fossil fuels has been increasing, which severely threatens human life. Thus, it is very urgent to develop renewable and reliable energy storage devices with features of environmental harmlessness and low cost. High power density, excellent cycle stability, and a fast charge/discharge process make supercapacitors a promising energy device. However, the energy density of supercapacitors is still less than that of ordinary batteries. As is known to all, the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors is largely dependent on electrode materials. In this review, we firstly introduced six typical transition metal oxides (TMOs) for supercapacitor electrodes, including RuO2, Co3O4, MnO2, ZnO, XCo2O4 (X = Mn, Cu, Ni), and AMoO4 (A = Co, Mn, Ni, Zn). Secondly, the problems of these TMOs in practical application are presented and the corresponding feasible solutions are clarified. Then, we summarize the latest developments of the six TMOs for supercapacitor electrodes. Finally, we discuss the developing trend of supercapacitors and give some recommendations for the future of supercapacitors.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are important energy storage devices due to its fast charging/discharging features and long cycle life. Design and fabrication of superior supercapacitor electrodes is of significance to the improvement of the overall performances of a device. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely reported for supercapacitor applications due to their high-tunability, including favorable porous properties, tunable chemical compositions, controllable crystal structures, and adjustable geometry morphologies. In this review, the recent reports focusing on MOF-based supercapacitor applications are elaborated. Particularly, the recyclable MOF-hydrolyzing strategy is introduced, during which the organic ligands can be recollected to drastically reduce the costs. Furthermore, challenges and perspectives of MOFs for supercapacitor electrode applications are also summarized.

Abstract:The energy storage field has witnessed a dramatic expansion in terms of short charging time of supercapacitors, especially in the highly active electrode materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have been extensively applied as precursors or templates for the synthesis of carbon, metal oxides/sulfides-based compounds as high-performance electrodes in supercapacitors. The MOFs-derived materials can be broadly divided into two groups: MOFs-derived porous carbon and MOFs-derived metal oxide/sulfide compounds. These MOFs-derived materials are characterized by unique porous structures, controllable structures, high surface area, good conductivity (MOFs-derived carbon) and outstanding electrochemical stability, meeting the requirements of the desirable specific capacitance and long-term cyclic performance of both electrochemical double layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors. However, MOFs-derived materials still suffer from the complex synthesis process and high production cost of MOFs precursors, difficulties in mass production, and unstable structure in highly corrosive electrolyte. In addition, the electrical conductivity of MOFs-derived metal oxides/sulfides needs to be further improved. In this review, we summarize the recent progresses in the development of MOFs-derived porous carbons and metal oxide/sulfide compounds and their applications in supercapacitors. The prospects and challenges of MOFs-derived carbon and metal oxide/sulfide compounds as highly effective and durable electrodes in supercapacitors are discussed.

Abstract:The increasing prevalence of wearable electronic devices in contemporary society has led to heightened expectations for energy storage devices. These expectations encompass not only high power density and energy density, but also robust stability and resistance to bending. Consequently, the design and development of supercapacitors with versatile functionalities has emerged as a prominent area of research. The electrode material, which is one of the elements that can have the biggest impact on the operation of supercapacitors, has been the subject of numerous scientific advancements over the years. One promising approach is the combination of transition metal oxide and graphene material composite. By conducting a comprehensive review of relevant literature, this study synthesizes preparation methods from multiple sources, integrates the benefits of multiple technologies to develop a novel preparation method utilizing ultrasonic shock and the two-step interface self-assembly method, and compares the physical and chemical properties of different transition metal oxide mixed graphene electrode materials and their application in supercapacitors. In conclusion, the preparation methods of transition metal oxide mixed graphene electrode materials typically control their microscopic morphology in order to support structure, agglomeration, and spalling reduction, thereby enhancing the specific capacitance and cycle stability of supercapacitors and achieving the desired result of increasing specific surface area and support structure.

Abstract:Recently, transition metal oxides, such as ruthenium oxide (RuO2), manganese dioxide (MnO2), nickel oxides (NiO) and cobalt oxide (Co3O4), have been widely investigated as electrode materials for pseudo-capacitors. In particular, these metal oxides with mesoporous structures have become very hot nanomaterials in the field of supercapacitors owing to their large specific surface areas and suitable pore size distributions. The high specific capacities of these mesoporous metal oxides are resulted from the effective contacts between electrode materials and electrolytes as well as fast transportation of ions and electrons in the bulk of electrode and at the interface of electrode and electrolyte. During the past decade, many achievements on mesoporous transition metal oxides have been made. In this mini-review, we select several typical nanomaterials, such as RuO2, MnO2, NiO, Co3O4 and nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4), and briefly summarize the recent research progress of these mesoporous transition metal oxides-based electrodes in the field of supercapacitors.

Abstract:Electrochemical capacitors (supercapacitors, SCs), have been deemed to be one of the most promising powerful electrochemical energy storage devices, owing to that SCs have long cycle lives, high power densities, and fast recharge capabilities. Transition metal oxide is one of the most promising electrode materials in the application of SCs, but the poor active surface areas limit their electrochemical performances. Particularly, hollow structures can enhance their active surface areas and porosity for better transportation. In this review, the development regarding hollow structures of the metal oxide, metal oxide complex, and carbon–metal oxide complex is discussed. Furthermore, performances of these materials applied in SCs are tested in various systems, and their electrochemical performances are introduced and compared. The disadvantages of SCs based on hollow metal oxide materials are also discussed, and the various solutions are provided. In this review, the progress with respect to hollow structure of the single metal oxide, metal oxide complex, and carbon–metal oxide complex are discussed. Furthermore, SCs performances of these materials are tested in various systems, and their electrochemical performances are introduced and compared. The shortcomings of SCs based on hollow metal oxide materials are also discussed and various solutions are given.

Abstract:Carbon materials play an important role in supercapacitor applications due to their diverse structures, rich surface morphology, excellent chemical stability and highly active surfaces. Currently, there are many reports on the synthesis methods of carbon-based materials. The molten salt method shows unrivalled advantages with its economy, environmental protection, high efficiency and operability. Here, we start from the function point of molten salts and focus on the different roles they play as templates, sealants, reaction media, and catalysts. The characteristics and selection principles of molten salts are discussed in depth, focusing on the morphological, structural and capacitive properties of carbon materials prepared using the molten salt strategy. Finally, the current research status of molten salt preparation is summarized, the shortcomings of the existing technology are pointed out, and the prospects for its development are envisaged. It is hoped that this review can provide some basic knowledge on the preparation of carbon-based materials by molten salt strategy and promote further research on molten salt technology.
